8/31/24: Crow Scout Outfitters & Whitetail Properties Land Specialist – Eastern Colorado & BBB Outfitters
Today’s Guests:
My good buddy David Fields joins me in studio and we talk about our successful Pronghorn hunt in Montana. We had a great hunt with Crow Scout Outfitters. Call Barry “Whitman”, if you are interested in a Pronghorn, Black Bear or Turkey hunt. I highly recommend them. Then we have a couple more interviews the Colorado Outdoorsman’s Days a few weeks ago we will bring to you today. Jerrod Meyer of Whitetail Properties Land Specialist- Eastern Colorado and Zach Kramer, with BBB Outfitters. They
[Music] Welcome to Sportsmen of Colorado. Colorado’s premiere outdoor radio show heard every Saturday afternoon on KLC 560 with insights on hunting, fishing, archery, guns, and ammo from Colorado’s top outfitters featuring the industry’s leading experts on how to enhance your experience in the great outdoors. Now here’s your host, Scott Watley. Welcome to Sportsmen of Colorado. Thank you so much for being with us today. Hey, I hope everyone’s off to a great weekend here. Hey, we got back a little bit early. We have been in Montana this week for several days on a pronghorn hunt with crow scout outfitters. And I say we, my good buddy David Fields and David’s been on our show before we’ve been hunting together for about all six, seven years now. David lives down in Orlando. And David, good to have you in studio here. Thanks, great to be here. Great to be back with you. Oh man, good trip. Now hey, you know, David, we were hunting last year. I think it was, and David said, I’ve never done a pronghorn hunt. And I said, well, I’ve only done one. So I said, let’s figure something out. So we found this gentleman, crow scout outfitter, a gentleman named Barry. And man, got everything set up and went down to, I went up, I should say to Montana there, to harden Montana right outside of buildings. And man, it just had a great couple of days. And David was successful. And with he is on day one, I got my day two. And it’s quite interesting hunting on the crow Indian reservation. So David, what did you know about the crow Indians before? I had very little, you know, some, a few things from history, of course. But I did not the reservation. And the, what we found out, the size of the reservation was amazing. 2.2, 2.4 million acres. And just the way it’s operated, you know, just coming in not, obviously not being from that area and not familiar with it. Just the way things are run there. And, you know, that the natives can actually own land on. It’s not just a reservation owned. And who can hunt there and how you can hunt if you’re not a native. That was just all fascinating stuff and all. And what they’re able to hunt and win. And it just really didn’t, it was just all and not just that, but just how beautiful the whole area is up there. And the reservation itself and how it’s run. It was just that was just a very educational, really, really interesting, the whole, the whole setup. And, you know, it’s kind of weird when you go somewhere and you have no idea what to expect. And then both of us were in the same boat because we just didn’t know, we just know, hey, we’re right on the Crow Indian reservation. And that’s about all we knew going into it. And, you know, and I think this is how a pronghorn hunt goes. But I’m not sure, like we were saying, you know, I hadn’t done one. You’ve done one. And just I’m thinking this might help be how it goes, but not being sure. And then finding out how at least how this one went. And it was met and exceeded expectations. It was just a total blast. I mean, I would love to do a pronghorn hunt again. It was just, you know, from the way you actually scout them. And then walk, walk or one through it. So, you know, out there with with 2.42, you know, there are over 2 million acres to hunt on. And then of course, you have to have a native Crow as your guide. They’re the only ones that can actually hunt there or actually be a guide. And then, so then you end up meeting up with them and not really sure, okay, what time do we want to meet? So, kind of like a lot of a lot of hunt, you meet early in the morning and it can last all day. And you can hunt until, you know, 30 minutes after sunset. And, but it’s a lot of, glassing a lot of binoculars and driving. And then you’ll, you know, because those, those darn analopes, they’re supposedly the second fastest animal on the planet behind the Cheetah, I guess. Fastest one in the continental U.S. And so they, and they must know that because they, they’re not hiding in the woods or anything. They want to have that nice area around them so that they can see things sneaking up on them and so forth. And I was expecting to see more herds. We did see herds. We saw a lot of singles, a lot of doubles and triples, more doubles and triples and things like that. And not as many, we did see herds, but there wasn’t as many as I thought we would see. But so that’s the fun part is finally, you know, locating them. And, and of course, the, the guys that are out there and the guides that are hunting all the time, they can spot them well before I could. Yeah. And you probably saw a walk. That’s a walk you kind of know what you’re looking for. But, you know, yeah, but initially into so vast, I mean, you pull in as far as you can see more land. And there’s not a lot of cover, you know, no. And, and then that’s so that’s the other fun part too. So you finally do scout them and then you got to, then you got to get close enough or have an idea, hey, is that a shooter or not? And then if you determine, yes, it is. And now it’s like, all right, well, he’s 3000 yards away or whatever it might be. Okay. I’m not a long, long shooter, but even if I was, I think that would be way beyond anybody’s range. So now you get to figure out, okay, can we get into that, can we get into range, whatever your range might be? And then, and then how do you do that? And that’s kind of the fun part also is the whole stocking of and figure that out. And then taking into consideration the wind and in the terrain and everything. That’s to me, that was kind of the fun part. And then finally getting to whatever your range might be. So we saw your buck and then the bus memory, we used about 1500 yards away and we sat there and he bedded down, you know, just in this kind of open bowl on the side of this mountain. And so we’re just trying to figure out, and we set there for quite a while, and for him to get up. And then we got within a closer range, but still wasn’t close enough, and then we were still 700 yards or so. And somebody was kind of walking through the scenario for everybody. Yes, so we initially, I guess we were like you said, about 1500 yards or so, whenever we spotted him and just started watching him. And he was in kind of a saddle area, I guess. I’m not sure is he going to hang out here for a while, so watch him. And then there was another area that we could get closer to. And so we were able to sneak into that area. And that may have got us within 700 or 800 yards. And if you’re a long-range shooter, great for you, and you could probably take that shot. I’m not that, that’s not my distance. And you know, 300 would be an outside shot for me, 400 or 300 would be comfortable with. And so our guide went around one direction just to scout out, “Hey, is that an area that we could get around to?” And while he was making his maneuvering that way, Scott and I were looking to an area to the left. Scott says, “Man, we should really sneak around this side. We can get around this side to the left and get within 200 yards up him.” So our guide came back and we were talking about it. And of course, we suggested that way. And he says, “Yeah, I think that’s a good route.” And so we made, and of course, that’s a whole fun thing too, because now he comes out of sight. So now you don’t want him to see where you’re coming from. So obviously he lose sight of him for a while also. And then says, “We’re coming up over the bluff.” And sure enough, he’s still hanging out there. Now we’re about 170 yards away. And everything just fell into place. There’s a rock right up on top of this ridge, or a little because we were going to use a backpack as a rest. And that was several rocks stacked on top of each other. Why didn’t it? Just like they were put there for– It was unbelievable. I mean, for you to have been out, and I mean, just this open, for everything. There’s not another rock formation out there. Except this about 24-inch rock pedestal that’s sitting there. It looks like somebody stacked a bunch of rocks right there. And you had your backpack that you could have leaned over. But this was just perfect for you. You can’t get much more stable for a– then a rock for using as you’re shooting, put your gun on. And 170 yards. Luckily, the pronghorn just hung out there and took the shot. And he ran about– I wasn’t sure that he’d got hit, but both you and the guys said, “Yeah, you hit him on that first, but now wasn’t sure.” So I’d chambered another one real quick and took another shot. And then he tumbled down the little hillside if he was trying to run up down some rocks. And that was just incredible. And at that point, just making sure he’s not moving again. But that made it just– spend the whole stocking part and figure how you’re going to get with him. Ranges really fun, which is a little bit different than Scots were trying. [LAUGHTER] But I’d say, and I don’t advise this, but David flew from Orlando. And I’d tell him, I said, “Look, don’t mess with a gun and all.” And I said, “I got guns for you.” But we were planning on going to arrange their in buildings. And most of them were clubs. And I don’t know. Then the guy said, he wanted to take us out that evening. When we got there, we weren’t planning on going out to Wednesday. So anyway, a whole bunch of facts go into the– But David never got to shoot the gun that he was shooting, which was my 6.5 Kimber. And man, I tell you just to put it on him. And that’s what it was awesome. The first time I pulled the trigger on that rifle. And I’d been looking at 6.5s. And I was thinking, Scots like, well, I’ve got one. Once you try mine out first. And like you said, we didn’t have a chance to go to the range. Like we were hoping to. And so that was our range shot. And boy, Scots said, it’s pretty well dialed in. And man, that thing is really– Yeah, I’m sure the honey’s going– 143 grain hornety, the ELDX. And I will tell you, David, he had him run the shoulder of the bone. And it crushed that shoulder. I mean, actually, we couldn’t keep that shoulder. Yeah. Because I mean, it crushed it. So I know everybody makes 5 of the 6.5 and all, but I’m telling you what. And I took my Bugara 308 that I was going to use and decided after– I thought, David’s doing it, dude. I said, hey, I’ll just use it after he shot his. So then we got on mine the next day. And the guy said he had seen this big buck on this one area. And man, we’re– and again, you do a lot of driving until you get up to stock. Well, then we’re on the property like 30 minutes on Friday morning. And it was just crazy. I mean, we saw him. So all honesty, when I was blown about 20 miles an hour, I took a shot. I missed the first shot. And then he started running away from us. And so got out, took another shot. And I was like, man, how do I don’t miss that much? I’m not trying to make myself like action, but I don’t miss too much. Then got in wasn’t– Yeah, wasn’t gusting. Yeah, I mean, it was huge. But we got over there. And when I got in meeting my third shot, and when he was running away from my bullet, went right down his spine. I mean, from the back of his neck to his tailbone, actually. And it looked like, honestly, you had taken a knife and cut down from the neck back to the tail, didn’t it, David? It sure did. And then it exited out the right shoulder just of the fur of his hide, not through meat or bone through when he was running directly away from it. But anyway, it ranged out when it was 305 yards. I was like, oh, Lord, so it all worked out. But it was– it’s so cool when you see him run, you know. And you get– But that was another fun thing about what just hanging in general. You don’t know where you’re going to see something. It’s almost a lot of time to tell us. So we just kind of made a band. And we’re going to start coming up this nice part of the mountain. And boom, there he was. Just out of nowhere. And we’re thinking, OK, we’re going to let him– we’re just going to take off. We’re going to– but let’s get ready and take him now. Yeah. And so we had to get in position right there, which was a pretty quick instance on that fur of that first shot. Plus, you know, trying to figure out what the wind was at that point. And you took off up there. Yeah, because I’m just being honest. And a lot of guys have studied the wind and gone to these shooting classes and the thermals and all that. And I have not done that. Makes you want to do that, though, and get out. There’s a longer range of– but just an excellent hunt. And boy, if you’re interested in a good prong on a hunt, highly recommend the gentleman’s name is Barry that you would call. Just mention you heard him your own sportsman of Colorado. And I want to be meeting with him next week. See if we work out some kind of package specials for our listeners. But it’s Crow Scout Outfitters. I’ll give you Barry’s number. It’s 406-679-2955. Again, 406-679-2955. And say, just mention you heard Scott and David on sportsman of Colorado. And he’ll get you booked up. I know they’re booked up this year. And he did say he had a few openings for next year. So I don’t know. We’re going to have to call him. See what we got going on to again. I would do it again for sure. I didn’t know what to expect. Like we said, hadn’t done one before. Is it something we would enjoy and everything. And I was– it was really an enjoyable hunt. And you get really good odds, I think, in general with prong on a hunt. Yeah. I mean, like I say, it is. We just want to tell you, it is a lot of writing. You are in a truck. But trust me, you don’t want to walk 2.2 million. And looking. So writing is good as worth it. But then you get out, do your stalking. And man, just worked out super, super good. So I just wanted to get David on a little bit. We’ll be doing another interview here in a few weeks. We’re going to get Barry on and kind of let him tell more about his hunting arrangements there in Harden Montana. And a good, not easy drive back and forth, of course. And so a beautiful state, a lot of country, and just a great, great hunt. So I wanted to wish everybody a good luck. Hey, season’s kicking off here. So I hope everyone has a great big game season. And David will look forward to doing this again, man. I appreciate it. Absolutely. Yeah, love it. Sure. Hey, when we come back, if you remember, we were at the Colorado Outdoorsman days a few weeks ago. And we did some interviews there. And we’re going to come into some of those interviews here now for the rest of the show, some different folks. So we met there at Colorado Outdoorsman days, just an update now on the Colorado runs for responsible for wildlife management, again, initiative 91 for the mountain line hunting band, Bobcat, all that is going to be on the ballot. We do not have a number yet, an initiative– I mean, a ballot number or prop number to tell you what we want to tell our bite of vote against. But you’re going to start seeing as soon as we get that probably in about another week. You will start seeing a lot of advertising for that. And we just need to get everybody informed to please vote against that because it is going to be a big effect on our hunting rights here in Colorado. And then I promise you, they’re going to other states. And we’re going to try to roll out the same thing. So we need to win here. So once again, you’re listening to sports of Colorado. Don’t go anywhere. When we come back, a couple of great interviews from the Colorado Outdoorsman days and Florence Colorado just a couple of weeks ago. Well, we’ve missed several times, but just want to mention, we were at the Colorado Outdoors misdames recently and down in Florence, Colorado, they’re good buddy Dan Gates. Colorado is responsible for wildlife management and a lot of great vendors were down here. Some folks we are friends with, others we have already introduced to you that we did not know, but just some great companies and great folks that are supporting the efforts here that we are trying to do with Save the Hunt, Colorado. And Jared Myers has been on our show. I believe once before, but Jared is with white tail properties and he was at our mile high hunt in Fish Expo this last April and will be there again next year. And Jared was here and I wanted to get him on just to talk about white tail properties real estate. So Jared, thanks for being with us. – Thanks sir, appreciate it. Yeah, it’s a beautiful day this morning, yesterday. Had a little rain come through, but the temperature was awesome. So we’re helping for a good day today, suns out. Had a little rain come through early, but it’s looking good today. Already a ton of people in here. And obviously it’s great to support this cause. There’s a lot of people attacking our right to hunt right now and coming out here and be able to, raise money and awareness for that fight’s awesome. Dan’s doing a great job, very well organized out here. And like I said, a lot of people are already showing up. So excited to see what today brings. We’ve like said, we did a little bit with the mile high hunt in Fish Expo earlier this year. Fantastic show. A lot of great vendors was really surprised and pleased with that. So I met Dan up there, discussed a little bit about what he’s doing. And since then, him and I have done a lot of things together. And I was happy to help support and sponsor the outdoorsman days here. So he’s really putting a lot of stick as a neck out for all of us, as sportsmen and outdoorsmen. And out here raising awareness. There’s a lot of people out here that I’ve met even this morning yet that just met a gentleman from Iowa. He’s out here and he’s going to be all cutting for the first time this year. And so to kind of make him aware of the battles we’re fighting here and what this event is about. And that’s what we’re here for. So it’s been great so far. Yeah, we do. All right, so give a little year background and maybe what got you into real estate first of all. You probably ask yourself that question sometimes. But it’s kind of– and then just let us know about why tail properties and kind of how you guys handle real estate. You bet you. I was in the archery industry for about 20 years, anywhere from retail all the way up to manufacturing and design. But it’s a fantastic career there. And I always wanted to do something a little bit different. And a lot of my friends from the outdoor industry had transitions over into real estate with white tail properties. And I’ve been trying to get me in there for a couple of years. So time came. It was the right time. So I made the switch. I’ve been doing it for about five years now. It’s fantastic. White tail properties, an amazing organization, or a faith-based Christian company. And I live out here in South Eastern Colorado. I’m a team leader for Colorado, New Mexico. I’m also licensed in Nebraska. But we specialize in hunting ranch, farm, timber, homes on acreages. A lot of what Colorado has out here. We’re all over the United States. We have almost 400 agents. And I think we’re about 43 states now. So we market heavily locally, regionally, and actually. We have our own auction company. We have our own production company, November Studios. So we’ve got a lot of ammo. We’ve really put together nice presentations for great marketing packages on some ranches here. So it’s a fantastic career being able to help people kind of live their dreams and reach goals of being landowners. Whether you’re on the buying or selling side, it’s just going to be one of the largest financial transactions of your life. And I really enjoy the emotional side of that and helping people reach those goals and those dreams they’ve had. I obviously grew up puttin’ in fishing. And the majority of what we do revolves around the outdoors and hunting and fishing out here in real estate. So whether you’re buying a home on acreage, you know, you still want to have that wildlife available. So I really like to market that and help people find the right place where they can sit on the front porch and watch elk or deer or whatever they want. So it’s a great– it’s just a great– I hate to call it a career because it’s not really– it’s not a job. It’s just, you know, every day it’s fun. I wake up, set the alone schedule and you kind of repot your sow. So everybody knows a quote realtor. You can sell a house. All right, maybe pick your aunt or something like that to do that for you. You’re talking about a ranch, man. You want somebody to does this day in and day out. You don’t want to turn that over to just somebody that does houses and you’re trying to help a friend. So kind of talk about what goes in. You look at the work of selling a house and what most people think of that. But when you think about a ranch, you know, maybe with, you know, 1,500 acres or something like that or much larger that y’all do, I mean, the work that goes into just getting that set up and even the conversations of, hey, is that a good client for me? Am I good for them? Just going through all that. How do those discussions go? Yeah, that’s a great discussion to have. We, you know, as far as residential realtor, you know, that’s a lot different than someone selling land or a home on acreage. You know, we pretty much, you know, call ourselves land specialists because that’s what we are. We, you know, the, the in town residential game really isn’t for us. You know, we like the outdoorsy portion of it. So having someone that knows what’s going on with land in general is very important when picking, you know, someone to take care of a transaction for you, whether it’s buying or selling. And there’s a lot of great other companies out there too. I mean, you know, one piece of advice that I like to give is obviously, you know, definitely research someone, whether if you want them to represent you as a buyer or a seller and see what they’ve done, you know, see if they’re an accredited land consultant. You know, that’s something that’s, that there are quite a few of us here in Colorado, you know, with my company, with White Tilt Properties and with other companies that, you know, we go through rigorous training. You know, there’s a ton of work that goes into becoming a accredited land consultant. And that’s a, that’s a big step kind of the highest accreditation you can get for, for a land specialist. So, you know, it can go from water rights to, you know, regulations on drilling wells, you know, different surveys, you know, the hunting opportunities and land under preference qualifications. You know, there’s a lot that goes into doing what we do as opposed to someone that’s, that’s more aimed at just the residential side. We definitely still do residential stuff, you know, obviously the homes on acreages, you know, every once in a while we’ll handle something for a friend or a client in town. But, you know, if you look at us, you know, we’re not, kind of, we’re not spread too thin with things like that. We like to keep, keep, you know, our focus in our wheelhouse, which is the larger ranches, larger farms, you know, it’s, you know, hunting farm ranch timber. That’s kind of our slogan. That’s what we do. So, all right. Let’s say your Jared’s information, let me give you that real quick, which is the best number here, the 719 or 219 289 85 80 719 289 85 80. You can also reach him at Jared dot Meyer. That’s J E R R O D dot Meyer, M E Y E R white to properties dot com. Hey, maybe you have some property you’ve been thinking about selling. Maybe you know of someone that is talking about selling some property. Highly recommend they get a hold of Jared at white till properties dot com. And he can help you out. What are the challenges, man in our market today, you look at just interest rates, all the different things there. But my understanding in this is he get a lot of cash deals on stuff like you’re doing. But how do you, how you working with those that need financing right now? You have some own partners there where they come to you. You can handle everything I’ve seen. Yeah, for sure. And that’s another thing is we can put you in contact with basically anybody need for a fair transaction whether it be a lender, a prazer, a surveyor, title companies, you know pretty much everything. Obviously we do this every day. And you know with the market now, a lot of people, you know, they kind of, I guess I’d take complain about the market right now. But we see every, you know, every market style is an advantage for us or an opportunity. Like you said, a lot of our buyers are cash buyers. So they’re not really concerned about interest rates. You know, it is an election year. So there are some of those, those fence line buyers that are holding on to their money or being a little bit more patient with things. But, you know, with limited inventory on some of the really great stuff we sell a lot of times, you know, sometimes they don’t even go to market. We’ll sell them before they even get to market because we have a good, you know, a good pocket full of buyers. So those cash buyers are always looking for opportunities. Investors are always looking for opportunities to pounce on stuff when the market is good or bad. So I don’t really see with us. I don’t see the market as a big hurdle right now. It changes, you know, it changes our scope a little bit and where we’re aimed, you know, both of our marketing and how we present things. But yeah, as far as financing goes, we have a ton of different options for that, you know, with, you know, a couple of our lenders that we work with directly. You can be approved, a soft approval in less than two days. You can be funded in less than 15 days sometimes. So there’s a lot of options on there for vacant land, for homes on acreages, construction zones are all rolled into one. So really there’s, it’s limitless on what we can do and that’s kind of the advantage of working with the land specialist is we have all that rolled in to our packages on how to help you go from start to finish the easiest and quickest way. So I’m not really concerned at all about the market ever. Yeah, like I said, it does present some hurdles every now and then, but their easy hurdles get over, you know, we’ve got a huge list of buyers, huge list of sellers both on and off markets. So, you know, cash is king and there’s still a ton of it flowing around. So whether you’re looking to finance or pay cash, it’s kind of, you know, it may be a little bit different than the COVID, you know, system we went through where it’s starting to become a market and it was selling for way over market value. It’s a little bit tighter now and more realistic, but like I said, every market direction is an opportunity for us. So, you know, technology and you look at the internet, what all it’s done for our lives and real estate and all, but I would have to think drones have been one of the best things in the world for your industry to be able to fly over properties and get footage like that. I don’t know why I just thought of that, but that had to be just a huge help for you guys. Oh, yeah, it’s, I mean, yeah, it’s definitely a help. A guy can almost be a little bit lazier sometimes if you want it to be, but we utilize them for a lot of things. You know, whether it be just basic content or actual content for the listings, you know, with some of the high end drones that we have now, you know, we do 360-degree panoramic aerials where you can basically take a little virtual tour from the sky without even stepping foot on the properties. So, being able to present those properties via, you know, both ground and drone shots, a lot of times can one narrow a buyer search quicker and it can also narrow the amount of showings you have on a property. We aim to have the, I don’t want to say the least amount of showings, but we want to have all the showings to be serious buyers. So if you can present that property online to them in a better fashion before they want to come look at it, they may find it is for them and they might find it’s not for them before, you know, you get too deep into the conversation. So, the drones now, I mean, they can do about anything. You know, we’ve got, we constantly are upgrading our equipment, whether it be drones or video cameras, still cameras, 360-degree cameras for inter-tours. But yeah, they’ve really, they’ve come a long ways and, you know, all of our guys are licensed drone pilots. You do have to have your FAA Part 107 license for that to use them commercially. So, having that is awesome. That’s a big benefit and a step up, you know. A lot of people have started getting them now, even the residential realtors will have them. But there’s also a lot of people to hire out there to do your drone work for if you want. So, we have an arsenal, my truck right now behind us, I never know what I’m going to have to do to scout something for someone, you know, if I have a listing presentation and I want to show them what we can do, you know, let’s write there and ready to roll. Wow, cool. Alright, before we get out of here, give us a few archery tips. What are a few things, man, just the easy mistake. Let’s take maybe the beginning of our gal that’s getting out there. This is our first year archery hunting. What’s a few tips you can give us? Have fun. Archery is archery. A lot of times it doesn’t make sense from tuning to all the way to the hunt, you know. It’s a blast. You know, I grew up gun hunting until I was about 12 or 13. I killed my first white tail deer with a bow when I was 13 and I picked up a gun since. And you brought up the females and I say this a lot when I was in the industry. One of my favorite things is when a couple would come in and mainly geared toward the guy, you know, buying a new bow or whatever. And if the young lady was not a bow hunter, it had not shot. I always tried to, hey, let’s grab this bow over here. Once you try to shoot a couple times and it was amazing to me how often the females would show the guys up right away out of the gate. I feel like it learned so much quicker and they’re so much better out of the gate. And that is awesome. Unless it was me on the receiving end because my wife, she’s way better shot than I am. But that’s always fun. But you know, it’s just enjoy it. You know, don’t put too much into it. You know, if some people get really into it, kind of get frustrated if everything is an exact and archery is an exact sport, which got to just remember to always have fun with it and you’re out there to have a great time. So whether you’re getting stuff every time you go out or you’re never getting anything, it should always be fun. And it’s just an enjoyable, relaxing sport, whether you’re hunting or just using it for fun. So that’s, I don’t have any in depth tips, but just having fun is the best one I have. And of course, if you miss us, you can get our podcast anywhere you find yours. Well as we’ve mentioned several times, we were at the Outdoors Mondays in Florence, and I got to talk with a lot of our current sponsors and friends that are here, but it’s always meet great new folks and make new friends. And then we are doing so today with BBB Outfitters. And we’ve got Zach Kramer with us and Mike Buie. They’re out of Cruston, Colorado. So Zach, thanks for being with us. Thanks for having me. Appreciate it. And Mike? Yeah, thanks for having us. All right. We got one microphone. So a little bit different than being in the studio. And all right, BBB Outfitters, you guys are here supporting the calls here for Colorado’s for Response for Wildlife Management. So Zach, we’ll start there. And why was it important for you guys to be here and support this? Yeah, very important to get out and support our fellow outdoorsmen and try to get ahead of some of the changes that could be on the horizon for us and how that, those impacts are going to affect all of us. So just trying to get out and support the cause. Yeah, good deal. And so Zach, you’re the owner of this, so kind of tell us a little bit about your background and then how you got into starting BBB Outfitters. Well, there’s four owners with the company. My background, I started hunting. We all started hunting together when we were pretty young. And I guess I would have been about eighth grade or so middle school started hunting together and continued to hunt together all the way through high school. And as we became adults, continued to, I don’t know, just enjoy the outdoors with one another and decided to put together this little company BBB Outfitters focused on really started with Waterfowl, but it’s expanded since then. Some of us have had a few hiatus from our time together. I was in the military spent several years overseas in different areas of the world. And always would come back though to hang out with my buddies and hunt. Absolutely. So Mike, kind of give our listeners a little bit about what you guys offer for his Waterfowl and Big Game and kind of the process of people want to hunt with you guys. Yeah, so we offer Waterfowl Hunts in the San Luis Valley in the western slope. We also are going to offer Fuz and Hunts this year in the San Luis Valley. And then we do some L counts, a limited number of L counts, but we kind of just fell into that. And it’s working out. So we can kill some of those too. So that’s basically what we got going. We’re one of the cheapest L counts in the state right now. So what are they going? We’re at L counts. We get about 3,000 for a cow and we’re up at six for a bull right now. They’re not real, real big bulls or anything. We don’t shoot any real big stuff. Mostly meathunts, but we get some decent six by six as ever once in a while. Yeah, and then we got 300 for a bird hunt per day per gun. Then we have lodging meals. We have a chef in house. So we got a lot going on down there. Chef in house. You got half the guy there, okay? Chef in house, all right? And have good food, man. That always is a big difference. You know, there’s, we’ll start with the Waterfowl, man. I don’t know if you guys do pits or, you know, lay down blinds, whatever you do, because I’ll let you explain that. But man, there’s nothing more fun than getting with a few buddies like that, getting out, you know, getting the decoys out, all that kind of thing. And then just having that break of day and having birds come in. I mean, that’s really exciting, isn’t it? Absolutely. We get out there. We got a bunch of different people from all walks of life come hunt with us. We set them up in eight frames, mostly in the San Luis Valley. And we got comfy chairs. Any age can do it. Anybody from kids to elderly folk. We can set them down. You can shoot sitting down. We can accommodate anybody that wants to come. We do a lot of veteran stuff. First responder. We give discounts for veteran first responder and youth. 10% discount. So we do a lot with that. We do a lot with the falling outdoors and a lot of those guys. So we do a lot there. Yeah, we’ve had a bunch of corporate guys bring in some, all their guys for team building events and stuff like that. Get everybody out there and sit in the blind and shoot a lot of birds. And so that’s something that’s pretty cool. It sounds like you can do kind of set up if somebody calls you and they go, hey, I got six guys. We need to do this for two or three days. So that’s something you can set up, Zach. Yeah, absolutely. Everything that we provide is kind of a custom deal. You can reach out to any of us and we set you up once we know the dates that you want to work with or come out and hunt. The amount of people will determine if that fits within our schedule and then we can really customize it. That’s what people want to go after. Ducks in particular will go after ducks. We’ve got specific leases for that. You know, if they want to go after geese, we’ve got huge graders that we get into down in the San Luis Valley. And you know, one of the other things I’ll mention real quick before I move on is what’s unique about what we do is we provide an opportunity for hunters to stay with the same company, the same outfitter and have that same experience again, but they can hunt both the Pacific flyway and the Central flyway based upon our location. So we hunt the Westlope and down in San Luis Valley, which is considered the Central flyway. So that provides us a myriad of different types of birds that we do harvest, different types of ducks, you know, everything from wood ducks, cinnamon teal, earlier mallards, wigin, pintails, you know, some of the birds that are even a little bit more rare shovelers, things like that that here in Colorado, they’re just rare to come across. So having that ability to kind of flex across the state for our clients is something that is a good thing for sure. We’re visiting with BBB Outfitters, that Kramer, Mike Buie, it’s BBB Outfitters LLC.com. Their number is 719-280-3397-719-280-3397. Hey, give them a call if you’re looking for some great waterfowl hunting and big game hunting. Hey, when you call, let them know you heard them here on Sportsman Colorado Radio and we’d appreciate that as well. So a lot of people come down there for a couple of days, huh? I mean, do you have packages? How does it kind of work for a little? We’ll take waterfowl first. So as far as our package is, it’s $450 a day per person and that’s a meal’s lodging included and your waterfowl hunt. We typically hunt the morning or the evening just depends on how the scouting goes the day prior. That’s another thing that we pride ourself on. We make sure that we hunt every, we scout before we hunt every single time just increases our levels of success for our clients. So a package deal typically is recommended at a minimum of two days hunting and two nights lodging at a minimum. That just ensures that we get you what you’re looking for. Absolutely. Alright, now getting tags is changing kind of drastically over these last few years. I’m going to be changing more in the future for big game tags. Mike, how do you guys assist folks with that kind of? If there, you know, maybe there’s their first time getting into big game or try to help get some tags? So with most of our hunts down there in the valley, we, they’re landowner tags. So we provide the tag for our hunts mostly. If somebody does have draw tag over there for that area that we’re in, or we can set them up to walk them through the process or whatever, but we will outfit them also. But all of our elk hunts come with a tag. That’s included in the price. So that’s included in the price, but you still got to pay to have the tag transferred into your name. So they still have to pay the state for that tag. But most of our big game tags come with a tag or hunts do. And some advice for how to have people, you know, and all of buddies, the first time they would go with a guide and they’re like, oh my God, we were riding on these elk and we had about 15 minutes, but he wanted to back out and come back the next day. And I don’t understand that, you know, or they just, they don’t agree with your guide different thing. What are some tips that you may give for people say, if you’re going to hire a guide, you got to trust that guide and they know their animals, they know their patterns, they know different things. And in this case, the guide told them, they go, hey, we can go in there if you want, but if we blow them out, they ain’t coming back and your hunts probably over for the next few days. So there’s a reason why you guys do certain things and say certain things to clients, isn’t it? Absolutely. And we’ve ran into that more than you think. It’s, it gets a little frustrating sometimes. We have some people come in and they want to tell us how to run there, hunt. I mean, like you said, we scout those things and we pattern them and we figure out what they’re doing and if we get there late, we know where they’re going to be in the morning. We pride ourselves on that, like Zach said. We do the scouting and we figure them out. So yeah, it’s kind of, it’s tough when people want to do that because they think they know more than we do and maybe they do in certain situations, but that’s where we get and that’s what we hunt and that’s our job. So that’s what we do. I mean, it gets a little frustrating, but we understand because I’m sure we do the same thing to people too unknowingly. But yeah, so that’s kind of how it works with us. Yeah, definitely. Listen to your guys a little bit. You want to add anything to that? No, I think Mike hit it right on the head. Listen to your guys. They’re there every single day that you’re not. So listen to your guys. Holy. Once again, their number 719-280-3397. It’s BBBoutfittersLLC.com. And let’s talk about some, again, I always tell people, you know, hey, you can hire an outfitter and you can be an outfitter. There’s no guarantee that your success ratio is going to go up quite a bit with that, but with LK, you just never know whether it can change things, you know, the Mule deer and all. So do you do pronghorn? You do Mule deer? You do it all? Yeah, Mule deer pronghorn, all big game. That is within our wheelhouse. So once again, most of our big game hunts are all down in the San Luis Valley. Over next year, we will have some deer hunts over on the western slope, Unit 62, some nicer units over there. So you can find us on Instagram. You can also find us on Facebook to see if we have any of those hunts. We do some advertising through those channels as well to see the latest and greatest on what opportunities present themselves for next year. Well, guys, great to meet you. Thanks for being here and supporting the effort here for Colorado’s for response for wildlife management. Make your plans next year to come to Colorado outdoors. Mizzes down in Florence, great people, a lot of great local companies here, which we need to help support them as well. And I’m telling you, if you’re looking for some big game hunting and some waterfowl hunting, hope you’ll give Zach and his crew a call 719-280-3397. It’s BBB Outfitters LLC.com, follow them on social media. Zach said as well. All right. Once again, those were a couple of interviews from a few weeks ago at the Colorado Outdoors Mondays. If you did not catch the number for Barry at Crow Scout Outfitters on our pronghorn hunt, we just returned from Montana. Once again, let me give you that 406-679-2955. 406-679-2955. Let him know you heard about him here on Sportsman of Colorado. But if you’re looking for a great time, great pronghorn hunt, I’m telling you, that is it. I highly recommend it and you heard my buddy Dave as well. Hey, thanks for being with us on Sportsman of Colorado. Hope you have a great rest of your weekend and we’ll talk to you next week.
