Hey, it is great to be with you, and this week’s a little different than our normal because I’m playing on the beach for a few days in what I laughingly call work. I do have to make a speech later, but other than that, Crystal and I are enjoying it here and glad we could connect with you.

All right. Now, when you do these speeches, I’m just making the assumption that you do these so often. Do you have any anxiety? I’m thinking you enjoy them and you don’t feel anxious at all.

The only thing I feel anxious about anymore is, you know, getting on stage and finding where I’m going to be as a blind person that. But no, once it comes down to talking and doing what I do. And this session, I do a couple of times a year here on this little island in Mission Bay. This one, you know, I’ll talk for an hour and then I answer questions. And, you know, as you know, from doing live stuff, you never know exactly what’s going to happen. But, you know, you just you roll with it. And no, I enjoy it. I look forward to it every time.

I will talk, you know, it’ll be two hours tonight. Two hours straight? Yeah, I’ll talk for an hour and then I’ll answer questions for an hour.

All right. And then what’s your topic tonight?

SPEAKER 04 : 1:48

It is kind of going from poverty to prosperity to purpose. And how we all need to go to purpose. We need to find our purpose. And I didn’t realize that until yesterday. I became prosperous, and then I realized, wow, that’s not the goal line. The goal line is purpose. And if you just start out with your goal to be purpose, you’ll get prosperity on the way. You can have all you want if you’ll help enough other people get what they want. And so it’s, you know, success comes from significance. And so that’s what we’ll talk about. And these are leaders that come in from all over the world. Some of them are politicians. Some are business leaders. Some are philanthropists, and they come in a different group of these twice a year, and we do this.

And what’s the name of this? You say business leaders, but isn’t this this big mucky muck event?

SPEAKER 04 : 2:43

Yeah, yeah. It’s called the Compassionate Samurai. So what types of people come? Well, like I said, you’ll have politicians, world leaders, actresses, actors, comedians. you know, wealthy people, philanthropists, and then people that are in the world of nonprofits and things like that. And it’s all based on my late great friend, Brian Clemmer wrote a book called compassionate samurai. And it’s kind of like, there’s two kinds of people in the world. There’s wealthy people that have a lot of power, but don’t necessarily always do good. And then there’s people that are focused on good, but they don’t necessarily have the power. And if you get them together and, you can really make a difference in the world. And Mother Teresa was successful at doing the work she did because she combined her efforts with some very powerful people who had wealth and resources behind them.

Now, you don’t give any names, but I’m assuming from what I’ve heard about these events in the past that we would recognize many of the names attending.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, yeah, you would recognize a lot of them and And then others are just people that work in the world of philanthropy or nonprofit. And, you know, they may work at a mission in Somalia or, you know, in a school in Tibet, and they’ll be sitting next to you. um the president of a country or the head of a banking group or whatever and it’s a fascinating group of people that all come together and it’s a it’s a matter of putting you know the the the wealth and the power together with the people of goodwill and service and this is your favorite like island like location to go to in san diego it’s like a hotel on an island Yeah, yeah, it’s called Paradise Point, and it’s actually a man-made island in this very successful guy 50, 60 years ago. contracted with the city of San Diego, and in the back end of Mission Bay, he got permission to dredge up and build this island. It’s about 60 acres, and then he did it in such a way that almost all the units are on the water and have waterfront. And, yeah, you get off the airplane in San Diego, and 10 minutes later, you’re on this busy street, and you turn into this thing, and it looks like a – jungle or garden, and you drive down this path for a ways, and you come up to this bridge, and the next thing you know, you’re on an island right in the middle of this city, and it’s really amazing. You feel like you’re on Gilligan’s Island or something. I don’t know.

Oh, that’s so cool. That’s one of my bucket list things to check that place out.

All right, so today we are talking about paying attention. That’s your winner’s wisdom column for the week. And I feel like I’m doing this with my teenagers all the time. But my husband, for that matter, too, because he has so much going on with his business.

SPEAKER 04 : 5:43

Yeah, and it’s interesting because if you don’t pay attention to things… you will pay for not paying attention. And here’s an example. The consumer reports tell us that as many as 50% of people who are qualified for a rebate never get it. So, you know, they bought an item expecting a hundred or $200 rebate or whatever. And, you know, they’ve got six months to do it. So they throw it on a pile or something or put it in a drawer. And the next thing you know, It just expired. They lost it because they didn’t pay attention. 20% of gift cards are never used. Oh, I believe that. Yeah, they cared enough to give you this gift card, and it just expires and runs out because you didn’t pay attention. And then in the column I talked about, in my case, you know, I have to do quarterly tax estimates, as a lot of people do. And, you know, it’s almost insidious the way they did it. You know, the one that includes the fourth quarter of the year runs over to January 15th. Well, a lot of people, most people don’t pay attention. And about January 8th or 10th and after the holidays and the new year, oh, yeah, I got to figure out this quarterly estimate. Well, the problem is it’s too late to take a tax deduction or make a donation or sell some stock if you have a profit in them. And you’re just stuck with this. And invariably, if you really look at that, you think, you know, if I had done this two weeks sooner. I could have saved thousands and thousands of dollars in taxes. Or instead of paying the money to the government, I could have given it to my church or my favorite charity or whatever the case may be. And it’s really amazing what happens when you do that. It all comes from just paying attention. And for the most part, it’s like we’ve talked about before. You either do it now or you get it on your schedule. because, you know, people meant to get the rebate. They meant to use the gift card. They meant to do their tax planning. But because the date creeps up on them and then the next thing they know, somebody else is telling them to do it. And if you wait for somebody else to tell you it’s time to do something, you waited too late because you’ve missed the deadline and the opportunity to to make it happen. And it all it just changes when you just start paying attention and just do it. So the key is when you have the rebate, when you have the gift card, when you have the tax planning, either do it right now or put it on your calendar. Make yourself a reminder to do it. It’s just that simple. And with the technology we have today, there’s no excuse for this. It’s amazing that people let things go like that. And because they don’t pay attention, they pay the price for not paying attention.

You know, this is such a great example because, you know, you have to set reminders for things, right? And I sometimes will have like 10 or 12 alarms set per day just to remind me, like, pick up the basketball team, you know, pick up the donuts for the team, you know, drop this kid off. Oh, you have a doctor’s appointment for this kid, a tournament here. And so all day long, these things go off and I label them. And then I give myself obviously leeway to get to the location and I’ll, you know, have a reminders because sometimes if they’ll go off, I’m like, oh gosh, what did I set that for? But last week, something pretty big happened by husband’s company. Sometimes clients do chargebacks, even though they have a contract because they’re irritated about something. Well, what they were irritated had to do with like, Some government paperwork that they had to do that wasn’t the fault of my husband’s company, but they couldn’t do business until they finished this government paperwork. So a lot of people kind of got behind and they’re like, hey, how come we can’t do business? And I’m like, remember, you’ve been telling me you have to do this paperwork. So anyway, and it’s not us. It’s not the company that’s making me do this. We are legally bound to make you do this in order to do business with you. So when you make a long story short, one client charged back several months and it’s equal to like the person was supposed to handle it. It’s equal to her entire salary for the whole year. Well, she missed the deadline. So they’re calling and you get a receipt when you challenge a chargeback. And if you have a contract, you get the money. If that I wouldn’t get to keep the money. Because he has a contract. So once you show the credit card company the contract, like you’re set, they go, sorry, you know, buddy, you have a contract, you know, you’re legally liable for that money and you can’t take it back. But if you miss the deadline to prove that they had a contract, then you get zeroed. If you miss the deadline, it’s all the legalese. Right. So anyway, they’re on the phone and they’re talking to the company and their employees with my husband. And she’s like, but I did everything. Here’s all my work. Here’s all my work that I did to prove it. And then Mark’s like, well, where’s the receipt to say that you sent this in? Well, didn’t ever get sent in. And literally, it is the amount of like her salary for the whole year. And so some people might get fired over that. But that’s not really how my husband operates. But think about the salespeople, Jim. They can’t get paid on money the company never got. So you’ve got to go to all those salespeople and say, hey, by the way, this big chunk of change that you made quite a bit of money off of, we have to take that out of your check because we can’t pay you for something we never received. So it has all these ripple effects of one person missing one deadline.

Yeah, and when that does happen, it can be such a learning experience. When I was first starting out in business, I had an employee that missed a thing like that, and it cost me probably $10,000 at a time when $10,000 was a lot of money. And she came into my office in tears and said, well, I guess you’re going to fire me. I said, no, why would I fire you? I just invested $10,000. in your education and you, I believe you can stay here and be a valued employee and never make a mistake like that again. And she spent the next 30 years with me and retired and was the absolute solid rock go-to person for everything and never made a mistake. And, and, you know, so I, you know, at least, at least we got a learning opportunity out of it because you’re going to pay the tuition. You may as well get the lesson.

Oh, yeah. I’m sorry. No, the speech that you’re talking about today from poverty to prosperity to philanthropy.

Perfect. Okay. I was thinking when you told me about that, about one of my friends who worked at VOA, Jim, and his name’s Jim too. And he retired and he was constantly busy doing Meals on Wheels and they’ve got all kinds of programs for families to volunteer and homeless shelters for women, older women, and they’ve got a senior center, just all kinds of stuff. And it’s a great Christian organization. Anyway, he was telling me at another charity event the other night, he’s like, yeah, for like you know, a year or two, I just had no purpose. I didn’t know what to do with myself. I was feeling really down. And he said, and then I found one thing to do every day. And one of the things he does is he works with ARC, an organization I work with and where my son’s doing an internship this summer. And he said, I get books. And then I repurpose all these children’s books. And he told me some outrageous number, like I’ve repurposed, you know, 400 and some thousand children’s books over the last 10 years or whatever it is since he retired. And so every day he He has a different place he goes to and a different volunteer effort that he is involved with that helps him have purpose.

Oh, absolutely. And that’s what makes all the difference. I mean, you know, going from poverty to prosperity is nice. It’s convenient. It’s all that. But it really starts to matter in your life when you find a purpose. And it’s as in most things, Angie, it’s not about you and it’s not about me. It’s about what we do for other people.

Hey there, friend. Angie Austin here with the good news. And Dr. Cheryl Lentz is joining us, the academic entrepreneur. She had a staff meeting yesterday. She said some new technology blew her mind. It blew you away, Dr. Cheryl. Welcome. What’s this all about?

Yeah, this is really crazy. You know, technology and me are kind of a love-hate relationship. It takes a little while, but you can teach an old dog new tricks. And I’ve said this publicly that I’m not a fan of the metaverse.

However… However, and there’s always a however in life.

There is. And I saw something on what is typically a boring faculty meeting, poke a stick in my eye. Oh, dear God, we’ve talked about the same thing for the last six months. Except… They showed a pilot that they’re doing with the metaverse. And what they essentially did is created a – think of it as a campus lounge that has about five or six different corridors as if you would physically walk into an online campus or an on-ground campus. You walk in and you see like the commons and then you see the bookstore and then you see different meeting rooms and there’s the union and there’s – I mean it was a very interesting space they created. And it was all for both students and faculty. And so here’s the interesting thing is we who are in online education in particular, online education isn’t going away. But the goal is always to how do we garner that engagement? How do we increase that sense of community, that sense of as if you were really there, but. we’re scattered across the world. You know, I teach for a military university and sometimes I have had conversations with students who are in Dubai or Djibouti or, or, you know, a station at Ramstein Air Force Base or something like that. And so while I don’t prefer that method, Zoom, just like you and I are talking via Skype, has the ability to make those connections and make it interesting so that we don’t have to be, if we can’t be in person, face to face. But this was the next best thing, Angie, I’m telling you, when you could actually not just be that talking head, but sit across the table from somebody as if you were in that conference room and you could see their avatars. And you can be in that space and have it as if you were really there. And it’s a little goofy. It’s a little clunky right now. But I was really blown away that I could see this as a viable option for the metaverse in online education. when it’s not desirable to be in that safe space because of geographic displacement, because there isn’t an option to be in person. But boy, this was really impressive, Angie.

Wow. So what are they going to use it for? What are you going to use it for? Like, what are you looking forward to trying it with?

SPEAKER 06 : 17:38

Well, I will say what I do now for my students is because I want my students to know I’m a real person. And it can be sometimes a real drag when you’re in the online classroom and all you’re doing is trading asynchronous text, meaning they post today at three. I post tonight at seven. And so we have a online conversation, just not in real time. So I post videos from YouTube that has me as a talking head when something comes up and I try to do it as a once a week kind of a thing. There’s also the ability that I can create, say, a once a week for an hour, a live classroom. We call it an alternative. Some students want to meet in person. And so we kind of do a little bit of a hybrid that you can be in person on a Zoom call as part of a synchronous class. So there are some interesting options, but there’s Zoom, right? It’s the ability of, you know, that’s a talking head and you’re not there and it’s a talking face. This is actually putting yourself as if it’s virtual reality in a seat, in a conference room, across and around the table, not just you sitting at home. And so now we have that almost mirroring experience that I could have a classroom as if I was in the front of the classroom, walking around the classroom, integrating that real-time thing without having that Zoom feel to it. It was really impressive.

Wow, that is so wild.

So I have offered to be part of this pilot program. I sent my little emails as, hey, I’m in. I don’t know what I’m doing. I need to be trained, but I want to know more. And so I’m going to participate in there. Even at my age, that stuff blows me away when you have to learn new tech like this. But This is something I think might be an interesting play. So I’m going to be student first, play a little bit, and then maybe I’ll get to use it in my classroom to see what my kids like.

Okay, so for the testing phase or whatever, they’re going to see how well you’re able to hear each other, understand each other, and then the body movement and everything, is that all included?

SPEAKER 06 : 19:31

Correct, and this is the one that was funny. I guess there are options for body movement. And there are some really clunkiness that they were saying that right in the middle of this, you know, there was like six or seven people in this virtual reality classroom. And somebody spontaneously starts dancing. And they don’t know why.

But the person really wasn’t dancing?

SPEAKER 06 : 19:51

Well, the person had not given the computer any commands to make their avatar dance or do any of these options, and suddenly it just erupted, and it was hysterically funny that suddenly somebody’s on top of the table dancing. And they’re like, yeah, I don’t know what that’s doing and why, but there it is.

That’s so funny because if they believe that that was indeed like a worker or a student, they could be like, you know, Susie’s had a little too much to drink.

Well, exactly. And so they’re doing that sort of clunkiness that. Tech doesn’t always go and so there are options, but if Murphy shows up to the meeting and suddenly you’re spontaneous because one of them just got up from the meeting and just started walking around the room spontaneously and they’re in the chat going, I didn’t do that. I don’t know why my avatar went off on a rogue mission.

well and then you hope i mean i’ll keep it appropriate but then you hope like some of these people that don’t know the cameras on let’s hope that these avatars aren’t um even able to do some of the things that have inappropriately been done during these meetings right you hope there’s like some kind of a child safety lock on the avatar that it can only dance or walk around the room or pick its nose you know it can’t do anything that would be deemed it completely inappropriate

I think that may be the fail-safe, kind of like when you deal with the IRS. The IRS used to have the need to know because everybody had this giant database of everybody’s tax return. Well, now technology is sophisticated enough that you only get access to those you’re working on. You can’t get access to the famous ones because unless you have the need to know, they can block you. Well, those types of behaviors that are inappropriate could be blocked and taken those risks and inappropriate behaviors off the table. Remember, it’s an avatar, not a real person. but when you have the, you can get up and walk around and like a networking event is what they were participating. You know, the kids have a break and you want to sit and chat with your faculty and you want to have it as is it simulated in virtual reality, but with an avatar. And I guess we have to start somewhere, but you know, I was not a fan of going, Oh, that’s all we need to do three years in COVID. And now we want to do this intentionally. Are you kidding me? So now I’m rescinding this and putting a caveat going, well, if we’re only going to be in the online world anyway, This might be a really interesting adaptation to make as real time as we can across the miles and still have that interactive, rich experience. So I’m on the fence right now, but willing to go, hmm, when eyebrow is poised, show me what you got.

All right. So this is your area of expertise, obviously. And, you know, this is something that women talk a lot about, you know, not publicly, but with each other.

And look, it is an area of expertise because what I’ve been going through for like the last couple of years, and until it happens to you, you can’t really understand it. You can learn about it in school, and you can talk to your patients about it, but when it hits you, it hits you just like gangbusters. So, I mean, women do go through a lot of changes, and like you said, Pregnancy is something that we’ll talk about when it comes to perimenopause and menopause. It takes us all by surprise because we just don’t know what to expect. And we don’t really talk about it enough. But it can actually leave us feeling like unprepared when you hit that first hot black. Yes. Like you get slapped across the face with it or the shifts in body odor. Like it’s just like, what is happening to me right now? But empowerment really starts with like awareness, knowing what’s going on, what to expect and feeling supported. And doing that makes this nightly routine, changing your nightly routine can make a difference. So this phase of my life is just all about sharing and giving information, sharing information and giving back.
