Sometimes you guys will just send me information or different things that might be helping out. another listener which i appreciate as well so thank you for doing that but any questions at all please give us a call 303-477-5600 okay one thing i thought i’d talk about because i did this actually uh during this last week during a show and i or during one of my daily shows and i had several different people give me feedback on man that was really you know great information thanks for sharing that and it wasn’t really a topic for that day because that’s a different show than here and then i said well i’ll talk more about it this saturday so I will. And that is in regards to mowers, mower height, blade sharpening, fertilization, weed control. And I got into a little bit of that on Rush to Reason earlier in the week. And I had several people, again, comment on, hey, thanks for the information. I actually had somebody that even worked for one of the large fertilizer companies reach out to me and say, hey, you know, I listen to you guys on a regular basis. And all the information you gave was spot on and keep up the great work. And I’m like, OK, well, that’s a topic we’ll get into a little bit more. this Saturday, plus, again, anything that you guys have for questions. So first things first, and with all of the moisture that we have had, and some of you have probably struggled to get the lawn even mowed with the rain that we have had, meaning that it’s going to be really long. I know a lot. I look around at a lot of the lawns, and they’re there along so given that we’re now going to get into some of the heat of not necessarily you know super hot but it’s going to start heating up in fact if i look at the weather here for aurora we’re going to be about 80 today seven mid 70s tomorrow and monday and then we’re up into the mid to upper 80s throughout the week and next weekend looks like around 90s or so low 90s next weekend so starting to get hotter meaning uh and with the longer daylight days your grass needs more water to stay healthy and all of that. That’s where it gets a little bit difficult this time of the year. So one thing that I recommend and I tell people and I do myself is put your mower height on the top, the highest setting that you’ve got. So if you use a push mower, if you use a riding mower, whatever, they’re all adjustable. And what I would suggest is you at least want to be cutting that grass at three and a half to four inches tall. In other words, as high as your mower will go. Now, some of you may say, man, that’s really high and it’s hardly doing anything. Well, then come down one notch. You kind of can gauge that. But the point being, keep it as long as you can. And especially now, with it being already really long, you’ll find it easier to actually cut the lawn now with it being as tall. In fact, in some cases, depending on how long it is, you may want to go longer. uh if you want to go a little bit shorter than that setting i just mentioned you may want to you may want to mow it twice depending upon circumstances now i’m also a big one on this time of the year especially not bagging your clippings now really okay for a lot of people they like to bag clippings because it makes the lawn look better and all that it does but keep in mind you’re you’re actually pulling x amount of nutrients out that if you allow them to fall back in and decay you’re and work themselves back down into the soil, it’s exactly what it does. They will degrade, and they’ll come back down into the soil and actually… Fill in some of those dead spots. And get nutrition and so on. So it actually will make your lawn thicker. That’s why there’s a lot of mulching mowers and things along those lines. Now, for some people, you still want to bag it. Fine, knock your socks off. But for a lot of you that have larger properties, larger yards and so on, you might even find bagging it is really kind of a pain in the neck. Well, if that’s the case, then… Go ahead and mulch. Now, some of you say, well, I don’t have a mulching mower. Well, you do. You do, actually. And for most mowers, if not all, I think there’s probably now in the aftermarket sides of things, you can buy mulching blades. for just about any mower out there. And all you do is pull the bag off, let the flapper back down, it keeps the deck and everything all closed, put a mulching blade on it, and some of you would say, well, what’s the difference between a regular blade and a mulching blade? A mulching, let me back up, a regular blade looks just like a regular blade. It’s a steel blade. It’s got a little bit of a lip so that it’s actually sucking the grass up. It kind of creates some vacuum underneath the deck, if you would. Of course, it’s got the blade side that’s actually cutting the grass. I’ll talk about sharpening blade or blades, plural, in a moment, but that’s what a regular blade looks like. It’s got a little bit of lift to the back of the blade. It’s, of course, got the edge, the knife edge that it uses to cut the grass, and that’s what it looks like. Now, a mulching blade, typically… If not always, a mulching blade will have a very high kick up and typically have notches in that kick-up area. So where that lift is on the back side of where you’re actually having the blade that cuts the grass, it’s hard to describe this on air, but where the blade is that cuts the grass, the back side of that normally just has a small lift that creates that airflow. It becomes a much larger lift, and they put big grooves in it, if you would, big slits in it, V almost, in each one of those. And in doing so, they’re trying to lift that, They’re lifting the grass even more so and making some turbulence to where that blade is cutting the grass more than one time. As it’s falling back down, it’s recutting it, mulching it up into smaller particles so that as that falls down, you don’t have these big chunks of grass. So you can actually take a regular lawnmower and turn it into a mulching mower by putting a mulching blade on that mower. And all you need to do there is just go put in your type, go to the Internet, Amazon, wherever, put in your type of mower so i’ve got up you know toro 21 inch blah blah blah model number mulching blade you’ll find a list of people that make mulching blades for that particular mower you won’t just find one option you’ll find half a dozen options of people that make blades and this is something to remember too as your As you continue to sharpen the blades on your mower, which I’ll talk about the proper way to do that here in a moment, keep in mind that that blade is degrading as time goes by. So you’re only going to run, if you’re sharpening things correctly and doing it right, you’re only going to run a blade a couple of seasons anyways and have to replace it because as that blade starts to wear down, you need to replace it for it to work effectively. So in this case, you might even find yourself, well, hey, I need a blade anyway. So if that’s the case, buy a mulching blade and be done with it. Now, here’s the other thing. You can still bag with a mulching blade. It won’t work quite as well because the vacuum inside of the deck is a little bit different. So it won’t work quite as well as what it would with the other blade. But can you still, you know, use the bag if you have to in a situation where, hey, I’m trying to, you know, I don’t want to change my blade out this fall. I’m going to go and suck my leaves and stuff up. Will it bag some of that? Sure. You’re still creating enough vacuum. It’ll go out the the opening that’s in the backside of it, still throw it into the bag. So you’re still able to do that with a mulching blade. But I think a lot of people miss out and end up applying, A, more fertilizer, more water, and wonder, well, why does the neighbor’s lawn look better than mine? Well, some of this is some of the technique that I’m talking about right now in how you take care of the grass in the first place. Make sense, Steve?
SPEAKER 11 :
Oh, yeah. I’ve got all sorts of ideas. But I did the other day at Home Depot or whatever, I bought a sharpener and a little kit. It had a little stone in it, and then it did have a balancer on it, too. A key.
SPEAKER 08 :
That’s key.
SPEAKER 11 :
That was kind of an interesting thing.
SPEAKER 08 :
I’m glad you mentioned that because most people don’t realize that those blades need balance. Now, you can do that one of two ways. So first things first, as you go to sharpen the blade, A, take it off. So you want to unbolt it from the bottom of the deck. Yeah, in some cases you can try to sharpen them, but it’s a pain. Just take the blade off, get it out on the bench in a vise, and really do it properly. Eye protection. All of those things you need to have. Sometimes that nut’s a left-hand thread. That’s right. So pay attention to that. Good point, Steve.
SPEAKER 11 :
It does sometimes, it says on the blade or somewhere in there, I think, when you’re underneath.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, good point. Be careful. I’m glad you mentioned that. Yeah, they’re not all right-hand threads. So double-check to see what kind of a nut, you know, what kind of threads you have on your shaft coming out of the motor or out of the… In some cases, you’ve got a riding mower, the mechanism that runs the deck, the transmission is what they call that that’s running the blades. In some cases, you may have two blades or three blades depending upon how wide of a mower you have and so on. Most people, unless you get above a 48-inch deck, are probably running two blades on a 48, so that’s typically how that works. So Steve mentioned something very important. A, when it goes to sharpening a blade, make sure you have all the correct angles and you’re doing that right and so on. And there’s lots of tutorials all over YouTube on how to sharpen blades. There’s even kits now that will even help you keep the angle straight. I see them listed on social media constantly where it even helps you keep, if you’re somebody that doesn’t really quite understand how to keep the angle of the grinder straight and all of that, you’re not somebody that’s used to doing that. buy one of those kits that actually help you keep all of that straight because the key is there you want that blade to be you know sharpened at the right angle to cut properly and you you want i don’t know what the degree angle is i want to say it’s probably about a 30 degree angle i say 30 sounds about pretty close when you when you yeah yeah and you’re eyeballing it so you follow the follow the angle the blade came with to begin with. And that’s where, if you’re looking at a blade thinking, man, I can’t even tell what this was, then put new blades on it. I mean, if you’re to that point, that’s right, they’re not that expensive. A single blade, quite honestly, even a mulching blade won’t cost you, I’m not exaggerating, $18, $20, $25. I mean, they’re just not that expensive, folks. They really aren’t. So that… on top of that so not only is getting that angle correct but steve mentioned something that was very important and that is the balance of the blade and some of you would say why why does that matter as you’re sharpening the blade you may find that you’ve had to maybe grind one side of that blade a little more than the other due to it hitting a rock or a piece of debris in the grass or whatever when you were mowing it And in doing so, you may be taking more metal off of one side versus the other. And when you do that, you’re throwing the balance of the blade off, meaning you’ve got to go back to the other side and take the equal amount of material off of it or you end up with a blade that’s out of balance and then you could have bearing issues and it vibrates and it just doesn’t cut as well as it should. And there’s all sorts of ways to do that. And in Steve’s case, he bought a little balance tool and they make them that way. They work fine. Here’s a poor man’s way of doing it, though, by the way. It’s real simple. Take a small nail, like a finish-type nail, and just pound that into the edge of your whatever. Two by four, you can do it that way. If you have a wooden bench, just go ahead and put that nail into the side of the bench. And all you have to do is make sure that the inside hole of the blade is nice and clean. And then all you do is put the blade onto that nail and kind of spin it around. And if it wants to go one direction or the other, you know it’s out of balance. Oh.
SPEAKER 11 :
It’s kind of like hanging a picture.
SPEAKER 08 :
Exactly. So if you get that blade balanced, you should be able to rotate it around, and it won’t want to find any other place than where you’ve positioned it because it’s weighted equally on both ends of the blade. So that’s kind of a poor man’s way of looking at the balance on a blade. There’s all sorts of other tools they make now and so on, but that’s an easy way to do it. If you don’t have any fancy tools and you’re just doing a grinder like I do and you’re wanting to know if it’s balanced, you can even just take a nail and mount it into the vice and then put the blade – on top of the nail and determine whether or not you’re you’re balanced or not that way also so that that one’s not that difficult to figure out and you’ll know right away whether you’ve got a heavy side or a light you know you’ll know which side’s the heavy side and that’s the side you need to take a little bit more material off of until you get the balance back on the blade so something to remember and That’s a bit of a hard thing to do. I think if you’re off balance, it might be a throwaway thing. Well, if it’s that far off, throw it away, put new blades on it. And this is just practice. I can’t tell you any other way to do this other than it’s just practice, trial and error. It’s not that hard to do. And one other trick. that I would tell you is when it comes to sharpening the blades, don’t use a bench grinder or anything like that. Get a regular, we call them just a small portable six-inch, you know, they’re not even six-inch, four-inch grinders. You know, get yourself a portable four-inch grinder. They make them now that are cordless, corded, however you want to do that. And then what I use to sharpen blades, because I think it works best, is they make a paddle wheel, they call it. It’s not an actual stone. It’s a paddle wheel, and it actually has… individual little pieces of sandpaper that are all glued together, and it looks like a paddle, and you’ll find yourself able to keep that straighter, not have it bounce around as much, and do a better job of actually sharpening the blades than if you use an actual hard wheel on that. So there’s another little trick. Use a paddle wheel on a 4-inch grinder, and you’ll find yourself sharpening those blades a little easier if you do it that way. Joe, what’s going on?

Go ahead, Steve.
SPEAKER 08 :
30 degrees. 30 degrees. There you go. All right, 30 degrees.
SPEAKER 12 :
Hey, John, two things. One, I assume you’ve already talked that you don’t want to put a knife edge in those blades. You’ve already talked about that, right?
SPEAKER 08 :
No, I haven’t even gotten to that point. And like I said, this is trial and error for folks. The biggest thing is try to match. If you get a new set of blades, just match the way the blades come from the factory already sharpened. What do you mean by knife edge, though?
SPEAKER 12 :
Well, you mean like you’d put on a chef’s knife, I mean a really, really fine knife.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, you’re not doing that. You’re just using a grinder and just making sure you get all the burrs off of it and call it good. And we’re not splitting hairs with it. Yeah, no, this thing is spinning fast enough it doesn’t matter.
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah, most of them I think that you only want to go down to about the thickness of a dime, you know, which is fine. But that’s not the reason I call on a multi-blade deck. And I’ve seen people start to make this mistake. You want to make sure that the blades are at different angles. I mean, I’ve seen one guy, he had a two-blade mower. He was putting both blades back on oriented 12 to 6. And, of course, when they turned, they were going to interfere. So, you know, I always – and, you know, is there a little tiny gap there? But if you pick up a stone, you can get those two blades binding. So I always like to orient the blades – so that they’re not passing each other within a hair’s breadth of each other. I don’t know what your feeling is, but… On my deck, I don’t have any choice.
SPEAKER 08 :
The blades only go on… I mean, if you put the left blade on the left side, the right blade on the right side, there is no options. Mine are keyed in a way that you can’t screw it up.
SPEAKER 12 :
Okay, because on my deck, I’ve just got a…
SPEAKER 08 :
uh a groove spindle and you can you can put that blade back on any orientation yeah mine mine are mine are made in kind of uh uh how do i want to say this uh joe like a d on each end of the of the shaft coming out of the motor and the blades match that d so you you know it’s it’s made in such a way that even if you flipped it 180 degrees it’s still on the same way and you’re not changing it only goes on the shaft one way is my point i can’t change it
SPEAKER 12 :
No, I’ve got a John Deere now, and it’s just got a, you know, it’s a three-blade deck. It’s a 54-inch deck, and it’s just a threaded spindle, and you can put those blades back on any orientation you want.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, in that case, I would highly suggest what people do is take a picture of those before you pull anything apart so you can go right back together the same way.
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah, and in Colorado, I think I had a Husqvarna, and the Husqvarna was the same way. It was a three-blade, and again, it was just a… I don’t want to say thread, it was just a groove spindle, and you could put those blades back on any orientation you want. So, John, I think yours is probably not the norm, because I’ve also helped other people do it. I’ve never seen one that wasn’t just a groove spindle that gave you any of the latitude you want. So if you’re one of those people, if you don’t already have a picture, as John suggested, uh… just make sure it yeah you know those things are hearing that so that would be a disaster yeah so again if you don’t have a picture something to go by just make sure when you put in there You know, make sure that there are different angles and just.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, the idea there being you want to, quote unquote, clock them in the way to do that. For those of you that maybe to your point, Joe, you pulled it apart. You didn’t take pictures on the front side. You would want to clock those to where one blade is in the middle of the pattern of the other blade, not blade to blade. I didn’t realize they went that close. Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER 09 :
Wow.
SPEAKER 08 :
Kind of like a helicopter. Yeah, exactly. You’re creating that kind of order. Like a helicopter. Exactly. That’s exactly a good way to look at it, Steve. Absolutely.
SPEAKER 1 :

Yeah, so that’s just my two cents for today, guys.
SPEAKER 08 :
Thanks for saying that, Joe, because I would have missed that, because in my particular case, and I don’t know that I’ve ever worked on, I mean, all the stuff I’ve ever done is commercial, so it may be the difference between the residential side and the commercial side, because on the commercial side, you don’t get an option. They go on one way, one way only, and that’s it. There’s no options.
SPEAKER 12 :
No, and again, I’ve probably had three myself, John. I’ve helped another neighbor with his, and I’ve never seen them the way you’ve described on a residential mower deck. It’s just always you can put them on any orientation you want.
SPEAKER 08 :
Well, and that would make sense because the cost of doing that versus what they do on the commercial side would be less, so that would make total sense, Joe. You could do the residential side a little cheaper by not making that spindle the way mine is.
SPEAKER 12 :
Right, exactly. All right.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, totally. That was my only contribution for today, guys. Makes total sense. No, appreciate it. Thank you very much. Yeah, so, yeah, if you’ve got a multi-blade deck, in Joe’s case, he’s got three. Some of you may find one where there’s two. Yeah, you want to, quote, unquote, clock those to where you’re not going to have any interference when those things start to spin. And then to Steve’s point. Some mowers, be careful. Sometimes they’ll have right-hand threads, left-hand threads. It just depends on how that particular mower has been made, how they manufactured it, and so on. So double-check that. And by the way, on the balance thing, going back to that really quick. You’ll know when it’s not balanced right. You’ll feel the mower, and this is where, especially on a small mower, 21-inch, where the blade is connected to the crankshaft of the engine. In those cases, in particular, you want to make sure they’re balanced well, because keep in mind, all of that unbalance is putting undue wear and tear on the crankshaft. of the engine and that’s where you can end up with other problems even engine wise by having an out of balance blade so if you’ve got a a different system where like in joe’s case there’s a belt system that’s running some transmissions on the mower blade assembly you know the gears that run the mowers and so on a little different scenario they’re not i mean still important but probably not as important as it is believe it or not on the smaller mower. Hey, good morning, all. I have a Craftsman three-blade deck. I think it’s 54-inch.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yep, makes sense.
SPEAKER 04 :
Got it nine years ago, I think, and… I’ve been underneath there quite a few times, and my blades do not interfere in any way. It’s all belt-driven, so it wouldn’t matter if you tried to orient them so that they’re not interfering, that it would drift over time because of the belt, so they don’t stay in one. They’re not keyed to anything to keep them in a certain location. I see what you’re saying.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, okay. So in other words, they can change their position. So they must not ever interfere no matter what. Yeah.
SPEAKER 04 :
because the belt could slip. The center blade goes forward, and then the other two side blades are a little bit back.
SPEAKER 08 :
Got it.
SPEAKER 04 :
And they kind of crouch in. If they were in line, they would interfere, but because they’re staggered like that, they don’t interfere, but they cover the whole path. That’s a lot of grass, though.
SPEAKER 11 :
54 inches, that’s a lot of grass to cut.
SPEAKER 04 :
About an acre and a half. I was curious.
SPEAKER 08 :
I get it, Jeff. I get it.
SPEAKER 04 :
Even then, it’s a multi-hour process.
SPEAKER 08 :
The trimming is the worst part.
SPEAKER 04 :
My question is on that deck maintenance. Being a large deck like that and with the belt, you have to release the tension on the belt, get down on the side and get the belt off and then
SPEAKER 08 :
unfasten the deck and drop it and then drive the mower away or slide it up from the side and then you know after a certain age this maintenance tends to get a bit weird yeah no it doesn’t and they do make and for those of you listening that have you know tractors or things like that there are now jeff and you might want to look into this there is actually make sure it’s hard to describe on air But there are now devices made whereby it’s like a lever type. It’s on wheels. It’s kind of a lever type of a mechanism where you can put that under the front axle of the tractor, push down on it. It raises the whole front of the tractor up, giving you access to what’s underneath it. So if you want to wash it out and all of that, you’re not sliding the deck out or anything. You’re literally just lifting the whole front of the mower up with this big lever device. Kind of like the NASCAR guys do. That’s exactly right. Think of it like a jack, Jeff, only it’s all done mechanically where you just get on the end of it and raise it up. And because most of the weight is distributed on the mower pretty correctly, once you get it raising in the front, it’ll just keep on going up and then gives you access to the deck that way.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, actually, Harbor Freight had a sale on those. It was called the ATV lifts, I think. Oh, really? ATV and mower lifts. Yeah. Yeah. So you can do that with the small ATVs as well.
SPEAKER 08 :
Interesting.
SPEAKER 04 :
And I got one of those, and I get about a 30-inch lift on it, and it helps. But you still have to get down on a creeper and kind of get underneath there, have problems with grass accumulating there. I had maybe at one point up to two inches of grass inside of it. It was a real pain. So I was just wondering if you had any hints on easier ways Easier, more maintenance for those of us who are getting up in years a bit and need a little… Need a little help dealing with that.
SPEAKER 08 :
If it were me, I would do one of two things. Either have a really good jacking system like we’re talking about, floor jack. In some cases, you can even build yourself a little bit of a car ramp where you’re driving the front end up on the mower that gives you access. Because I’m also one, Jeff, to where I think things mow better if you can get underneath that deck and power wash it after every mow. And I know that sounds like a hassle to a lot of people, but if you can hose all of that down, you know, debris and junk, especially now here in Colorado, we’re going to be really wet. That grass is going to be sticking underneath there, and people will talk about you can put wax and PAM and all this other stuff underneath there. None of that does anything at the end of the day. It’ll all come off pretty quickly anyway, so you’re just going to have to get the grass out of it. But I’m a big one on washing that deck after every time so it doesn’t build up.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, well, Craftsman did a pretty nifty thing on this. They put two little ports in. to hook up a garden hose on either side so you can just put it on there.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, and do you start to mower and run it with it kind of pumping in like that?
SPEAKER 04 :
Yep, and definitely. And after several years of doing it the wrong way, I realized that, oh, hey, if you lower that mower deck all the way down when you’re washing it like that, the water stays inside and it does a lot better too. Great idea.
SPEAKER 08 :
So does it give like a swirl effect? I mean, how well does it do at cleaning all that out, Jeff?
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, because what you do is you hook up the water, and then you pull out the little knob that activates the power takeoff, activates the blades, so you’re acting like you’re mowing the lawn, but just swishing the water around inside.
SPEAKER 10 :
It’s kind of like a dishwasher in a way. Yeah, like a washing machine. Yeah. Yeah, more of a washer.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah. Yeah, so… Okay. And it does okay with that. I just… It’s… And mulching mowers are designed, as you said, to keep the grass up there. So with all the damp grass, it’s going to want to pack that. You are exactly right, Jeff.
SPEAKER 08 :
Absolutely. Yes, yes, yes. Absolutely. And by the way, everything we’re talking about, even for those of you that have just a regular 21-inch push mower, be careful which way you tip that up because you could lose fuel or oil. So know which way to tip the mower up. But same thing, Jeff. You’d want to wash those out just as well, just like you’re doing with yours.
SPEAKER 04 :
Right, and so this time of year is probably good to, as you said, make sure you clean it after every use just to make sure you don’t get that grass piling up inside of there. And then one, you didn’t talk about this, and it’s pretty difficult with the safety features on mowers now, but please do not defeat a push mower or any other mower. Don’t defeat any of the safety devices that cause the blade to stop spinning. My son years ago, 30 years ago, probably, was a medic and had to go to Haiti. And he can’t remember how many different times patients came in with fingers missing because they didn’t have any safety devices. And they thought they could just pick the mower up to use it as a trimmer.
SPEAKER 08 :
Oh, geez.

No. Yeah. No. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

But, you know. Accidents happen, so please, you know, the safety features are there for a reason. Absolutely.

Absolutely. Absolutely. Yeah, and, excuse me, others are texting in, too, that, yeah, depending upon your mower deck and its configuration and so on, some of them won’t make, to your point, Jeff, won’t make a hill of beans, but a difference how you put the mower together. blades on because they could actually change position much like what you’re saying in other cases like in my mower there’s only one way they’ll go on they they will interfere so they’re clocked specifically but again each mower is going to be a little bit different along those lines so you you should know what you have and and this is another tip for everybody if you don’t Trust me, we now live in a day and age where you can go to the manufacturer’s website, you can go to YouTube, you can find something on your particular mower, I don’t care how new or old it is, that will tell you some of the things that we’re now talking about and walk you through it. So if you’re not familiar with your own mower and how your blades come on and off, how you should be sharpening and so on, then go look this stuff up specifically for your mower, because I will say this, and Jeff, you know this as well, and so does Steve, there are far too many makes and models and types and so on for me to be specific any way shape or form when it comes to mowers because jeff as you know it all depends on who made it what country it came from i can go down the list they are not equal at all and uh one thing in terms of uh

organization i used to have a file cabinet drawer drawers full of manuals and things and i don’t keep paper copies anymore i use electronic copies i just find them on the internet and download them keep them on my computer back them up and if i want to do maintenance on say like an oil change i just did an oil change and so i wanted to make sure i was doing it right and looked it up and You can do a keyword search. You don’t have to look through the whole manual to figure out what oil change is. You just put in oil or oil change, and you can find it. So I’ve done that for kitchen appliances, all sorts of different things. So I’m not a paperless guy anymore. I like to live in – I don’t need that stuff, and it’s going to be one less thing for my kids to get rid of. Yeah. Sometime in the very, very distant future when I pass. Yeah.
SPEAKER 08 :
Again, good to know, and this is to your point, Jeff. My advice is I do the same thing you do, Jeff. If you’ve got a particular item, piece of equipment that you’re working on maintaining, doing something with on a routine basis, then, yeah, download. All the manuals are typically online from whatever that manufacturer is, and even if it’s super old, Jeff, you can still typically go out on the Internet and find the same manual somewhere. It’s not that hard. Get those things downloaded. have the ability to have those at your fingertips and know exactly what you’re working on and what needs to be done. And this comes down, Jeff, everything to what type of oil does it take, how much, what type of other maintenance should you be doing at what intervals, and so on and so forth. No different than your car, other than when it comes to this type of equipment, it’s more so because you’re not mowing lawns with your car, two totally different things. And the other disadvantage that I will tell you when it comes to small vehicles

engine small equipment end of things as i said earlier nothing’s universal i mean literally you can go from one brand to another to another to another and all of them being different in how they work yeah i don’t know how many different black crafts for lawnmowers are out there look superficially the same but they they are all different different mower deck sizes belt sizes all sorts of things that’s right Pretty much standard on the Kohler engines, I think.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, and some of the engine stuff will get standardized. But even then, sometimes Kohler will build something for one company that is different than another company. Even though they may look the same, they are distinctly different. And trust me, I live in that world far too often. And what you might think is universal, for some of you out there listening, it’s not. Trust me, it’s not. It’s universal to you, but not to every other mower that’s out there.
SPEAKER 11 :
Even homes are the same way. It drives me nuts. Absolutely. We come out of the automotive industry, and we see there’s nothing standard on a home.

There’s no consistency. No. The safety thing on the automotive side of it, for all of you listening, Jeff, you know this as well. has created some consistency in the automotive thing to where certain things are just pretty standard from car to car to car, no matter where they’ve come from. On this end of things, we’re talking small equipment, engines, things like that. Yeah, it’s a crapshoot. There is no consistency at all.

Yeah, well, I guess I’m just going to have to live with the 30-inch lift that I get out of this ATV mower jack. And it does work really well.

You pump it up, and it has actually the safety stops to allow you to not have it crash down on you. I still put – not jacks, but what do you call them – The jack stands. Oh, yeah.

For any of you that are working on anything, I don’t care what it is, car especially, but even some of this type of equipment where, you know, if it falls on you, it might not kill you, but you sure wouldn’t want it to fall on you. It wouldn’t be very comfortable, and depending upon who’s around to help, it may not be a good situation. By all means, put jack stands under this stuff when you’re working on it anyway. I don’t care what you use to lift it up. Put a jack stand under it.

So 307-200-8222. 307-200-8222. All right, somebody said here that, I have a Craftsman mower, that the deck belt for the blades either keeps stretching or falling off the pulleys. Recently purchased a new belt, put it on. It’s a bit smaller. Made sure that maybe that that was the problem. I do have to engage and disengage the blades every time I want to pick up because of the safety. Yep, that’s exactly right. Have you any advice on how to keep the belt on other than all of the little shields to keep it on that keep it from falling off? Ooh, that is a great question. I think the first thing I would look at is do you have any pulley problems? As even in the automotive world, sometimes the pulleys themselves can wear and not keep the belt in like it should. Also make sure you don’t have any damage to a pulley, which I know this particular texter, it’s Dawn. Dawn, you probably have already done that, so that’s probably not an issue.
SPEAKER 11 :
And to make sure I guess the, you know, you haven’t lost the angle. One of the pulleys could be facing a little bit off.
SPEAKER 08 :
That’s a good point, too, Steve. In fact, in the automotive world, and they still make them, there’s little laser devices that you can use to line up to make sure that all the pulleys are straight. Now, you could do that on your own with just a laser pointer. and and put put in the groove tape it to the groove exactly tape it in there and then make sure that you’re lining up with all of your other pulleys correctly to steve’s point make sure we don’t have anything canted something hasn’t gotten bent or something weird along those lines yeah it doesn’t take much to throw those off so that’s one of those and other than that don um man i i don’t know that’s a great question obviously make sure they’re spring freely and
SPEAKER 11 :
Or during, have you lost one of those guides? You know, like sometimes they’ve rattled off, you know, like a guide that keeps it from. Could be that as well. Keeping it, you know, maybe there’s one missing. You don’t know because you don’t eat there every day.
SPEAKER 08 :
Anyways. Let me continue on. Sorry, I’m answering text messages as we’re talking and all that as well. All right, really quick, fertilizer. I talked about this during the week, and one of the things I wanted to talk about today, and I had a question that came in earlier in the week on what type of fertilizer do you use and all that sort of stuff. And this is personal preference and nothing against the Scotts brand. I actually had a gentleman that listens to the program that worked for Scotts, and we were talking back and forth a little bit this week. And he even said himself that, you know, for a lot of you that are do-it-yourselfers, you want the weed and feed, and you’re trying to control weeds and do the fertilizing all at the same time, knock your socks off. If you have a little bit larger property, though, some of you that have been texting in, you know, Jeff just texted in, has an acre. Some of you have a little bit larger properties. And it was funny, even the Scots guy said the same thing. When you get larger properties like that and you’re trying to be a little bit more cost effective, you’re going to want to use a different product than theirs because of the cost. Okay. And where I’m going with that is some of you live near and or have dealings with co-ops. A lot of times your co-op will have a fertilizer that is even blended for the particular area that we’re in. The other great fertilizer that I’ve used for years and years at different times is Rich Lawn Turf Food. It’s a local company, and you can’t buy that typically at your big box stores. Typically, Rich Lawn, you’re going to buy at your lawn and garden centers. Okay. Find a lawn and garden center near you or go to Rich Lawn Turf Foods website. Find where there’s a particular location near you. I like their product. It’s time-released. Not all of them are. That’s one of the things you have to look at as well. Some fertilizers have a time-release capability to it. Others, the minute you put it down, water it in, the fertilizer is there. on i do know for a fact that richelon is time released and you can tell by looking at the fertilizer because it’ll have like a coating on if you put your hand down in and kind of look at what you’re feeling some of the and i don’t know the chemical makeup kind of like when you take a tylenol you know yeah i can’t tell you the chemical makeup of each individual little little uh Particle. Particle that’s coming out of the granule. That’s a good way to say it, Steve. But some of them will be coated. And I don’t know which one they’re coating. Probably the nitrogen is probably getting coated because that’s the one that, if you’re not careful, can burn the lawn and so on. And so it’s probably the nitrogen particle that they’re actually coating and time-releasing because as time goes by – because in our area, you’re going to have iron. You’re going to have nitrogen. You’re going to have several different things. And one of the things that I like about Richland Turf Food for our area, again, is it’s blended – for our particular area, our climate, our watering, and so on. And typical application, and this is where I may differ with some others, if you’re doing it correctly, you’re using the right kind of fertilizer, you’re using time release, you should be able to go about six weeks or so, maybe even eight weeks in between fertilizations. It depends on, in a lot of cases, how much water we’ve had. So all the moisture we’ve had of late, it needs fertilized right now. I don’t care when you fertilize. We’ve had so much moisture that right now, this weekend or next, it’s due to be fertilized. And the key to that is if you get good fertilization down and good nutrients into it, you’ll use less water. So some people think, well, man, it’s going to be getting hot. Why would I fertilize now? Because you want to feed, just like us, You want to feed your body. You want to feed your grass. The more hydrated and healthy you are, the better you can go climb a 14er. Well, your grass is no different. The more hydrated and fed it is. And the other thing about it is the more you keep it fed, the more it does at keeping weeds and other things out of it as well. You’ll always notice that typically those crab grasses and weeds and things like that, they will grow in from the edges only. or in areas where it’s thinner. If you get a really good, nice, thick, lush lawn, you might get a dandelion here or there in the middle, but typically you’re not going to get a lot of other things that are growing up in that because the lawn itself, the bluegrass, is healthy enough that it kind of crowds out some of those weeds and so on. Now, as far as what chemicals to use to kill weeds and so on, this is personal preference. Everybody’s got their own way of doing it. Some people like just buying off-the-shelf chemicals. Others, you’ve got some concoction you make at home. I’ve never been the concoction guy. I’ll say it straight up. I use Roundup in the rocks and other areas. It’s easy. I buy the concentrate, mix it up, put it in a backpack sprayer, spray it, off you go. And then I use the Weed Be Gone product. Roundup has another product that’s similar you can’t use Roundup in the grass you have to use a different type of chemical in the grass so you don’t kill the grass Roundup will kill the grass and the weed and everything around it which in some cases is great but in the grass for dandelions and so on thistles even that might grow up in the grass you want to use a product that won’t kill the bluegrass but it will actually kill that thistle or dandelion and that’s where the The Weed Be Gone product comes in. Now, Weed Be Gone will also kill things in the rocks and so on, so you can use it for that. But typically, it’s a little bit more expensive, and the Roundup is a little bit cheaper. So typically, you’re going to use a dual product, one in the grass, one out of the grass. And that’s where that Weed and Feed product, by the way, that Scott’s and others make. that scott’s product has some of that chemical built into the fertilizer so as you’re putting it down it’s keeping dandelions and other things out by its nature it’s the way it’s chemically made and that’s how that side of it works so fertilization really key and if you haven’t done it um It’s been hard to have done it here recently just with all the rain and everything we’ve had. I can tell you that if you have an opportunity today or tomorrow to fertilize your grass, you should. I don’t care if you fertilized it four or five weeks ago. With all of the moisture we’ve had, I read something yesterday, and I believe it’s true. I need to follow up on this. But we have had more rain from May 1st till now. We’ve had double the rain Seattle has had. Really?
SPEAKER 11 :
Really.
SPEAKER 08 :
Think about that. So we’ve had twice as much rain as the northwest because of all of the storms and things that we’ve had roll through. Now, it looks like we’re in a pretty good dry spell. Keep in mind, we haven’t gotten into the monsoon end of things, which is in later July, typically. But right now we have had a lot of moisture, which is great. Everything you look out here from the studio west and it’s just lush and green and the golf courses are great and the trees look great and so on and everything. Right now, if you don’t have a green lawn, you’ve either not fed it well enough or you’ve got some disease or something along those lines. Because right now, every lawn out there, regardless of where your sprinklers are at or even at, you should be nice and green right now just with all the moisture that we’ve had. But your grass also needs fed right now. Now, some people have had questions in the last couple of weeks on, hey, I’ve got a lot of crabgrass. How do I get rid of that? Now? Now? And I’m saying now because if you wait longer, crabgrass is really hard to kill later in the year you get. So if you’re going to kill crabgrass, go buy a crabgrass killer, get it killed now. Because the longer you wait, the harder it is to get it killed. It’s one of those things that you want to catch early in the year. And frankly, if not, manage it the best you can and try to kill it again next year. So if you don’t get it killed right now, I hate to say this, but it’ll be tough to get rid of it because you just can’t. It’s one of those… types of weed. I guess you could say that’s what crabgrass is, is a weed. And the way it grows and so on, you’ve got to kill it early in the year. The longer you wait, the harder it is to kill. And in some cases, that’s where you’re liable to be just putting Roundup on it, killing it that way, digging it out, replanting it, and off you go. And that’s about the only way in some cases you can get rid of crabgrass. And again, it’s one of those things where it typically starts on the edges and it will creep in. And somebody also asked me at times, where does all this stuff come from? It’s blowing around. It comes from the neighbors. It comes from a field nearby. I mean, birds carry things around. I mean, you end up with different things in your lawn. You may have one of the most pristine lawns on the block, and all of a sudden a weed pops up, and you’re like, where did that come from? Because of what I just said. That stuff can float in from any number of things. Animals can track it in. You name it. Now, one other thing, too, that… That I’m really big on. And for some of you that are are listening, you you may think I’m a freak, but because I am, if you have your lawn cut by a professional service or even somebody that comes around and goes from lawn to lawn to lawn, if it were me. I would be requiring that person to wash the wheels or put some Lysol on those tires before doing your lawn. Otherwise, you’re liable to pick up whatever the last lawn just had. If the last lawn had some sort of fungus or something weird on that lawn, keep in mind it’s now on the tires of that lawnmower that was just on that previous lawn. And as they now roll that off the trailer and roll out onto your grass, guess what? All of what was on the previous lawn is now going to be on your lawn. So I would require, if it were me, that particular service to be using a Lysol or washing it or something along those lines to make sure that those tires are good and clean before they go on your grass. Wow. I never thought of it. It happens at golf courses all the time. That’s exactly right. Somebody’s shoes have something and it gets on the greens and ruins the green. So that’s why mowing your lawn, especially if you guys have anybody that comes by and does your service, could be just a kid that goes door to door. You should be, if you want to, make sure you’ve got your own can of Lysol kicking around even that, hey, kid, before you actually mow my lawn, will you make sure that you put this on all of the the wheels and on all the tires and surfaces before you go rolling on my grass. And keep in mind that you’re not washing the deck in between and all that, but at least getting that main contact area that has been running on everybody else’s grass.
SPEAKER 11 :
Sure, and it’s going to push it into the grass where it’s going to grow the best. Exactly. Actually, you’d be helping the kid, too.
SPEAKER 08 :
Give him a can of Lysol. You’d say, hey, you’re doing a good service. That’s right. You’re teaching him something that he probably doesn’t know. And what I just said, by the way, you would be surprised how many commercial lawn services don’t know what i just said they’ve never thought about it they don’t even it’s not in their wheelhouse they just go from you know lawn to lawn to lawn and away they go and if they end up with some sort of a disease in one particular area they deal with it but they don’t understand what i just said either because most people don’t think about what i just said it doesn’t cross their that just doesn’t come into their wheelhouse so and I don’t know why. To me, some of this is just common sense. But, yeah, if you’ve got a lawn service and they’re doing anything at all for you, and, by the way, that includes even there’s lawn services that will do everything from aeration. They’ll come by and do other things to your lawn, different things along those lines. Make sure that they are, especially if you’re a freak about your lawn, make sure that they are disinfecting. That’s probably what I should be saying, disinfecting with Lysol or something along those lines. and again it can be the spray can you can get your own spray bottle of lysol and mix it up and have it ready to go however you want to do that and it’s also why i like washing the mower off on your own even if your mower is never going anywhere else but just washing your mower after every cutting getting the deck good and clean getting the wheels good and clean a it makes the lawnmower look a lot better and you don’t have crap all over it and all that i mean it just makes things more serviceable and all that’s like washing your car after a heavy rain or snowstorm or something to that effect but your lawnmower same way i have seen mowers where you know they um they don’t take care of things and you’re literally taking a putty knife to the deck to scrape all of the grass and everything off and again an easy way to take care of that is just wash it after each mowing and some of you from the sounds of it you have different mowers where they may even aid you in that by putting some ports in the deck and so on. But yeah, that’s one of those things. And one thing I didn’t talk about today, which is also important, I’m one of these where every time you go to mow, check the oil. Check the oil in the mower. It takes 10 seconds, 15 seconds maybe. Pull the stick. Does it have oil in it? What does it look like? Is it all black? Does it still look good? Hopefully you’ve already changed the oil. And on a push mower, by the way, the easiest way to change oil, and this is simple, get a pan. And don’t worry about pulling the drain plug because that’s a big waste. Make sure it’s empty of fuel, which typically as you go into the beginning of the year, it will be empty of fuel. But make sure it’s empty of fuel. Take your pan, take the dipstick out, and just tip the mower upside down and let all the oil run out the dipstick area. Don’t take the plug out and drain it and go through all that mess. Just tip the mower upside down, drain all the oil out that way, put fresh oil in it. Unless it’s a bigger engine, they won’t have oil filters, so all you’re doing is taking oil out, putting oil back in. And on small engines, my oil of choice is Mobil One 1030. Unless your engine says something else that’s specific to that particular engine or mower, 1030 synthetic, doesn’t have to be mobile one, but 1030 synthetic is what I’ve been using for years and years and years with absolutely no problems, and that’s the way I would do all small engine work.
