From title paperwork to transmission myths, this episode of Drive Radio is packed with real-world fixes and “don’t learn this the hard way” advice.
A Denver caller asks how to transfer a Colorado-titled 2009 Subaru to a family member in California—and the crew explains why clean paperwork matters, how tiny name variations can trigger DMV problems, how to handle odometer disclosure, and why you should send title documents certified. They also touch on a simple tactic to keep the transaction straightforward and reduce headaches.
Next, the show tackles cheap parts and why bargain sensors and off-brand components can create bigger problems—especially

It’s a mighty fancy automobile. Oh, she’s a real road king, all right. Zero to 60 in 7.5. She’ll do a quarter mile, 13.40. 390 horsepower, 500 foot-pounds of torque. Whatever that is. Performance and image, that’s what it’s all about.

SPEAKER 06 :
And we’re back. Good afternoon. We have Chris in Denver with a title question. Looks like a good one for you, Justin.
SPEAKER 14 :
I’ll do my best.
SPEAKER 06 :
How are we doing, Chris?
SPEAKER 14 :
Hey, good. How are you guys? Good. So I have a question. Yeah, I have an old car. I live in Denver. I have a 2009 Subaru, and I would like to gift it to a family member in California, and I’m on the title. What’s the best way to do that and the cheapest way to do that for the family member, etc.? ?
SPEAKER 03 :
You know, in order to make it just a clean transaction, I probably don’t go the gift route. I write $100 on it. Yeah, she’s going to have to pay a tax on $100, but what’s that going to be, $8, $9? Then there’s usually less questions involved. This is a Colorado title.
SPEAKER 14 :
Yes.
SPEAKER 03 :
Okay. And then, I mean, the most important thing is to make sure that it’s filled out correctly. California is probably my hardest state to deal with when it comes to title transactions, so you want to make sure that it’s perfect. If you want any help with that, you can always send me pictures of it or email me pictures of it, and I can help you sign off on it correctly. Is it just your name on the title, Chris? Yes. Okay. Well, that makes it simple. And then, obviously, I don’t want your middle and last name on the air, but you’ve got to make sure that the printed part on the back where it says seller’s hand-printed name, that needs to read exactly as it reads on the front of the title. So if it’s just Chris and last name, only print Chris and last name. I can’t tell you how many customers it just says Chris Smith and they put Chris L. Smith. Don’t do that because now we have to go get a duplicate title. Yeah. Happy to help with that if you need to. The other question is, what does it say for the odometer on the front of the title? Do you have that title with you?
SPEAKER 14 :
I do have it with me. I don’t know exactly what it says right now. Oh, you mean, so it would say that at the time that I bought it.
SPEAKER 03 :
It does. So on the upper right, it will have the mileage. Does it say a mileage in the upper right?
SPEAKER 14 :
Let’s see. I got it right here. It says… And the other question while I’m looking for this, to fill out a California official bill of sale, is that how I would do that? Because it will be purchased in California?
SPEAKER 03 :
You know, honestly, most Department of Motor Vehicles will take a handwritten bill of sale. Wherever you can pull a bill of sale is just fine. And then the title will also act as a bill of sale, too.
SPEAKER 14 :
Okay, but if the car is actually worth a few grand and I put $100 on there, is anybody going to balk at that at the DMV?
SPEAKER 03 :
No, you can say I’m selling it to a family member. I’m doing them a favor.
SPEAKER 07 :
In most states, don’t they tax on value of the vehicle? No.
SPEAKER 03 :
For registration, it would be taxed on value, but the purchase tax, the initial tax, will be on what we put on the back of that title. Oh, okay. Yeah, makes sense.
SPEAKER 14 :
Gotcha. Okay. So you were asking for the odometer reading?
SPEAKER 03 :
So what I want to know is next to the odometer, does it say A? It does. Okay. So on the back of the title, you’re going to check actual mileage.
SPEAKER 14 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 03 :
And then you’re going to fill in what the mileage is on the odometer right now.
SPEAKER 14 :
Okay, what it is currently, yeah, because this was a few years ago.
SPEAKER 03 :
Correct. It’s just there’s a lot of vehicles that are exempt for title tracking, and you don’t want to mess that up. But yours is simple because it’s still an actual mileage title.
SPEAKER 14 :
Okay. So if I wanted to say, and I don’t know if this is even a thing. So this is for my son, right? He’s out in California. And is there a way for me to fill out my parts of the title and send it to him? and then he can have it and go get it registered?
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, the other option is if you want us to do the title transfer for you, what I’ll do is I’ll reassign the title into Ridgeline Auto Broker’s name and then into their name, and we’ll charge you $100, and then he’s got a temp tag where he can drive it until he gets his registration, too.
SPEAKER 14 :
Oh, I see.
SPEAKER 03 :
So if you want me to jump through the hoops and make sure that the title is perfected, I have no problem doing that for you. But I can also just walk you through it. It’s not a hard process.
SPEAKER 07 :
And if you mail it, just make sure it’s a registered sign.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, send it certified. Anything title-related, I always send certified.
SPEAKER 14 :
Okay, but it’s okay for me to fill out my portion here, send it to him, and have him fill out his portions. And it’s like we did it in the same room.
SPEAKER 03 :
In the buyer’s hand-printed name, I would put his name over there. That way if this thing gets lost in the mail. I’ve had stuff taken out of our mailbox out front of our business. Like you don’t want to leave an open title. So I would put his name in the buyer’s hand-printed name. It just matches driver’s license.
SPEAKER 14 :
Got it. Okay, and what’s the email for you guys again?
SPEAKER 03 :
Justin at RidgelineAutobrokers.com. And obviously we’re not in today, but if I see that on Monday, I’ll walk you through the process just to make sure it’s perfect. That’s the one thing with titles is perfection.
SPEAKER 07 :
No mistakes. No mistakes.
SPEAKER 03 :
Can’t have it.
SPEAKER 14 :
Okay, and I can do the same thing with a bill of sale. I can make two handwritten bills of sale. I keep one. I fill out my portion of the one that I’m going to send to him, and then he’ll have it to fill out.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, and you could have him send one back to you, too, because sometimes your insurance agent will want that to know what date to prorate your insurance, because I’m sure you’ve got insurance on it right now.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 03 :
Your insurance agent may want a signed bill of sale to prove what day to drop your insurance. That way you’re not paying an extra day on insurance.
SPEAKER 14 :
Got it. Okay. All right, well, I think that answers my questions, but I can email you maybe on Monday and make sure I’ve got all my I’s dotted and T’s crossed. Yeah, I’d be glad to help.
SPEAKER 15 :
Great.
SPEAKER 14 :
Well, thank you, Justin. I appreciate it. Yeah, of course. Thanks, Chris.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, and that’s always something that a lot of people get confused on is titles.
SPEAKER 07 :
Right. Yeah, there can’t be any mistakes or getting a duplicate.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, and the big thing is out-of-state titles. Colorado has a very simple title. Some states like California and Florida, some of them you sign off on the front, some of them you sign off on the back, some of them you have to sign off twice, checking to make sure that there’s not a lien on this title, that someone didn’t take a loan out on it. Yeah. At Ridgeline, we will protect you free of charge. If you ever have a question about that or you’re buying something out of state, feel free to reach out to us first. We just want to make sure that you’re not buying something that’s got a bad title or buying something that’s got a lien on it. We’ve talked a lot about emissions today. We need to make sure that you’re going to be able to make sure this vehicle’s emissions compliant in the state that you’re registering it in. And that’s different for different states, too. And then some states have vehicle inspections. I wish Colorado had a vehicle safety inspection, but we don’t. But you might buy something in Colorado and take it out to New York, and it may fail the New York inspection because they actually do a safety inspection there, too. So I’m always happy to help with those questions.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah. Well, thanks for the information, Justin. Let’s go on a little break and we’ll come back.

SPEAKER 06 :
And we’re back. KLZ 560 here with Justin from Ridgeline Auto Brokers and Kim from Tune Tech. So I guess the next place we’re going to go are cheap parts killing your car.
SPEAKER 03 :
You know, what I like about this radio show is sometimes you can save some money. We can help you do something on your own so you’re not having to, you know, pay the shop. But please buy good parts. Right.
SPEAKER 07 :
Exactly. And, yeah, we were kind of talking about that over break, you know, the – Yeah, just because they show it on Amazon doesn’t mean it’s good. And it’s just, yeah, we always want to make sure that we’re getting a good quality, either OEM or equivalent part to the original equipment. And with that, you know, experience from last week, yeah, we had a car come in, failed emissions. They had replaced one of the sensors, but they bought it on Amazon. And it was when I told them the price of the right sensor, they were like, well, that’s like four times what I paid for that one. Well, you bought a bad one. Four times the cost for a good one. The correct one is there’s a big difference. And that’s, you know, you get what you pay for in that price.
SPEAKER 03 :
And this goes into like mechanical parts too, like sensors with circuitry and stuff. Yeah. I mean, you want, you know, we were talking about Denso, Hitachi, you know, good name brand stuff, but also like if you’re, we’ve ran into this several times with, you know, rebuilding engines and stuff. If, You’ve got to get a Mopar cam. You’ve got to get a GM cam. You’ve got to get GM lifters. You’ve got to get Mopar lifters. Don’t skimp out on that internal stuff, especially on a job that you’re already spending five to ten hours tearing it apart. I know it’s going to be three times the price, but your time is worth something to it. Right.
SPEAKER 07 :
You don’t want to put it all together just to take it back apart again.
SPEAKER 06 :
Well, let’s go to Bob in Thornton. You have a question about a lease.
SPEAKER 08 :
Oh, yeah, I do. I leased a car for two years, and it’s coming up March 8th at the end of the lease. And it’s a great car. I love it. And I bought it for, I’m an Uber driver, and I bought it because it holds eight. It’s a Carnival. You ever see one of those?
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 08 :
It’s huge. Yeah. And the luggage space behind the third row, you could put three dead bodies. So you could fit 11. Exactly. I didn’t drive it very much to and from airport. You know, people go into the airport with luggage and stuff, need three rows and a lot of luggage space. So it’s only got my mileage was supposed to be limited to 30,000 miles. for the two years well it’s only got 16 000 miles on it’s in perfect shape sure and um my buyout is 26k i looked it up on kbb wholesale i mean trade-in value is 32 so should i just buy this car
SPEAKER 03 :
So you’re going to lose a lot of money if you take this. This is a Kia, right? Is that right?
SPEAKER 08 :
Kia Carnival.
SPEAKER 03 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 08 :
Low mileage, perfect condition.
SPEAKER 03 :
If you take this back to Kia and just turn it in, that dealership is going to make a bloody fortune and profit on this vehicle. Yeah. So my suggestion would be to buy it. If you’ve got the money, go ahead and buy it outright. Okay.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, money’s no object. That’s right in my check.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, if you can pay for it, go ahead and buy it out, and then either have someone consign it and sell it for you, or honestly, with the mileage that’s on it, you might just want to keep it and drive it.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah, I got garage space for it. I got garage space for four cars.
SPEAKER 03 :
The other nice thing is if you’re the original owner, I’m assuming you leased it brand new from Kia. Brand new, yeah. You’ve got the 10-year, 100,000-mile warranty, where when that goes to a second owner, it actually gets cut to a 5-year, 60,000-mile warranty. So you’ve got a ton of warranty left on this thing, too, where if you have a major mechanical issue, it can get fixed, and you still have a 5-year, 60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty on this vehicle as well if you’ve got… Any electronic components go out? Oh, you’re the second owner? You’re the second owner?
SPEAKER 08 :
Well, the first owner was Kia. Well, that is called a… The lease are brand new. It had seven miles on it when I drove it away.
SPEAKER 03 :
You are technically the original owner of that vehicle.
SPEAKER 08 :
Oh, okay. So I’m not considered the second owner because the owner was Kia Financial.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, the first document on a vehicle is called a Manufacturer Statement of Origin. Yeah, an MSO. An MSO. So Kia had an MSO. You have the original title. You still have all of the 100,000-mile warranty and the 60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty on this.
SPEAKER 08 :
Now you’ve answered the question that was not clear to me.
SPEAKER 03 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 08 :
I just made my decision. Yeah, okay. So, yeah, I would just buy it out. I would just write him a check and take the car. I wouldn’t. Now, they’re going to charge me a D&H. I think it’s either $699 or $799. I don’t know why because I did pay an upfront fee when I rented or at least the car originally when it was new. So is that what they do? They get you for a D&H twice?
SPEAKER 03 :
The squeaky wheel gets the grease. If you’ve got time in your day, everything is negotiable.
SPEAKER 08 :
Well, I’ve got time in my day, but if I buy the car… They probably don’t want me to buy the car.
SPEAKER 03 :
No, they want that car.
SPEAKER 08 :
They probably want me to turn it there.
SPEAKER 03 :
usually there’s pretty good incentive for that. So they’ll probably try to pitch that on you and it might be worth actually listening. Um, but yeah, that, that DNH is absolutely negotiable. They do need to get paid something for their time though. So I do understand that they need to make something.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah. I mean, I read this was the first car I’ve been driving for 61 years. Uh, This is the first car I ever leased, and I thought, well, I’m not quite sure about it, so I’ll lease it for two years. And like I said, I used it for, I didn’t even use it for personal use. I used it for, as an Uber driver, driving large parties, events, long distance, you know, they wanted to go to. Colorado Springs or something like that, or the airport, and I used it for that. I didn’t rack up that many miles on it. I love the car. It’s a great car. The only difficulty with that car is its front-wheel drive. Really not very good in the snow. Oh, no. But as far as seating capacity, a driver and seven, eight people. And the luggage space, I’ve looked at a lot of, well, I had a Chevy Suburban at one time. And the luggage space behind the third row of seats was not there. I mean, there wasn’t anything there. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen one of these things. It’s got a real deep well on the back, like I said. Three dead bodies and two sets of guns.
SPEAKER 03 :
I love it. But, no, I would go ahead. If it’s working well for you, go ahead, buy it out, keep the original factory warranty on it. You are going to have to pay taxes on probably about half of that vehicle’s value, so be prepared for that.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah. Well, I don’t want to trade to another one because I looked at, you know, what’s available in that Kia Carnival now.
SPEAKER 15 :
Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER 08 :
Even the lower range, there’s like an EX… LX and an SX. Even the EX, which is the lowest level. Well, I didn’t like the LX and the SX because the middle row was only two seats. EX, the middle row is three. So you got two, three, three. There’s a boatload of… And easy to get in and out of. I mean, you could put a… Two families. Right. You know.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, it’s the mom that likes those captain’s chairs because it keeps the kids from touching each other. Right, from fighting.
SPEAKER 08 :
Right. You lose one seat. Yeah. Anyway, do you know anything about these cars? I mean, Kia’s a great car. Oh, that lady that called about the Mazda? Mazda’s a great car. Mazda doesn’t make a bad car. But if she calls you again, have her take a look at a Kia Sportage. Great car. Or the car that replaced the Kia Soul is now called a Seltos. Four different trim levels, four different drivetrains from low end to high end, about mid-20s to low 30s. And if you want the top of the line, it’s the all-wheel drive. You can get a hybrid and all that other stuff. Seltos is what replaced the Soul. They made those Souls for 15 years. Every car rental company had gobs and gobs of those cars. They were everywhere. It’s great cars.
SPEAKER 03 :
I think Kia and Hyundai have both had some very good years. I think they’ve both had some very bad years. When it comes to those, you just need to do your research. But, yeah, I agree with you. Josh knows there’s several Kia and Hyundai vehicles that I really like, and there’s hands down not a better powertrain or bumper-to-bumper warranty out on a new vehicle. That gives you a lot of time to know whether it’s going to be a good vehicle or not, too. Yeah.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah. That Sportage is the right size. It’s a small SUV. Everybody makes them, you know. I’ll tell you the car that I’ve owned five of that I love, but they don’t make them in my configuration anymore. Chevy Trax. They quit making those. They skipped one model year, and when they came back in, they went to a three-cylinder front-wheel drive only. All the five that I owned were four-cylinder turbo. All-wheel drive. Great cars. Never had a problem with any of them. Put a lot of miles on them driving Uber. Great cars. But they, I don’t know, they messed them up, but they’re cheap. Yeah. Expensive to buy. Well, thanks, Bob. Thanks for that information. I didn’t realize that warranty would carry over. Yes, it will. I bet that’s worth paying them their D&H.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yes, it is. Absolutely.
SPEAKER 08 :
I don’t know if I can even bargain that, but… Because I’m sure they want me to turn the car in.
SPEAKER 03 :
Well, they do. All right, thanks.
SPEAKER 06 :
Thank you. And we’re going to go on break, and we’ll come back for Troy and Ivan.
SPEAKER 05 :

And we’re back and the phone lines are all lit up. So let’s go with Troy first and Thornton. Good morning, Troy.
SPEAKER 10 :
Good morning. Good afternoon. How you folks doing? Good. Doing great. Thanks. My question is about a 2021 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. I purchased this vehicle used a little over a year and a half ago. And ever since I’ve owned it, I always kind of felt like the brakes on it were a little spongy. Check the master cylinder and plenty of fluid and everything, no issues there. So last weekend, I went ahead and just changed out the front brake pads, and I used Napa mid-grade pads. And when I pulled the pads off, the old ones, they really didn’t need to be replaced, but I went ahead and just did it anyway because I had them and just got it over with. But the brakes still kind of feel a little bit spongy, and I’m kind of like, well, what’s going on here? Is it possible that there’s air in the fluid somewhere that’s causing this?
SPEAKER 07 :
I would tend to think that would be the first place I would look would be the brake fluid system. Yeah, you know, it’s a 21, so I would say it’s probably due for a brake fluid flush at this point. I would go ahead and do that first. Did you replace the rotors with the front pads also?
SPEAKER 10 :
No, just the pads because, you know, like I said, the pads really didn’t need to be replaced. When I pulled the wheels off, I was like, well, if I need to get new rotors, I’ll go ahead and just go get the rotors, but I just had the pads and… The pads were fine, but I just went ahead and put them on anyway, put new pads on anyway.
SPEAKER 07 :
A lot of times with just doing the pads, they are not going to seat as quickly into the new rotors, so that can affect your pedal feel and can cause noise. There’s a few different things, but that’s why we always say replace the rotors with them. Yeah, like you said, they didn’t need to be replaced. But, yeah, typically with an odd pedal feel, the fluid would be the first place I would look. And, of course, make sure there’s no rust or anything on the calipers and stuff.
SPEAKER 10 :
Right, yeah. The calipers look good. You know, I didn’t notice any rust or anything like that. Good, yeah. And, you know, to kind of add a little more mystery to it, when I’m at highway speeds and I apply the brakes, they feel just fine. But when I’m, like, in, you know… side road traffic or whatever you want to call it. Yeah. That’s when I kind of feel like, you know, why aren’t the brakes applying? Why aren’t the brakes flying?
SPEAKER 07 :
You know? Yeah. It could just be, are you running oversized tires or anything like that? Or,
SPEAKER 10 :
No, no, no, it’s all factory.
SPEAKER 07 :
Okay. Yeah. It could just be the way that vehicle is. It’s hard to say. You know, you’d have to drive another one to see if they feel similar. But, yeah, it’s one of those things that, yeah, if everything looks good, but, yeah, the brake fluid would be the first place I’d look.
SPEAKER 06 :
And what do the rear brakes look like on it, too? Did you check those?
SPEAKER 10 :
No, I didn’t check those. Okay. You know, mostly because it’s always been, you know, the front brakes I’d always wear first.
SPEAKER 07 :
Not necessarily anymore. We’re seeing a lot of rear brakes wearing more so than the fronts, yeah. Okay.
SPEAKER 10 :
Well, maybe that’ll be next weekend’s project.
SPEAKER 06 :
Sounds like a good project, yeah.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah. All right. Well, I think I’m going to probably end up over at Accountable Automotive over in Broomfield and have them do a
SPEAKER 12 :
brake flush then yeah that would probably be a pretty good idea anyway right inspect the rears and do the flush yes for sure yeah okay all right thank you thank you and let’s go to ivan and uh parker good morning ivan good morning how you doing good good hey i’ve got a 2018 dodgy durango rt and it’s only got like 30 36 37 000 miles on it and i’m uh i’m real anal about doing the maintenance on my vehicles and so i want to do the tranny service on this thing and i’m sure you guys know that that transmission filter comes with the pan um but anyway what i’m calling about with that i found a place it’s called i believe it’s called blue and but it’s spelled b-l-a-u auto parts they’re out of i think wisconsin somewhere but they sell a kit but it’s They sell a transmission pan with the filter, the new bolts and everything. But the oil that they – and they give you a pump and everything, you know, because there’s no dipstick on those things. They give you the pump and everything. But the brand of oil that they sell with it is called – and I don’t know if I’m going to pronounce it right. But Ravenol? Ravenol? Ravenol? R-A-V-E-N-O-L? It’s like a European –
SPEAKER 03 :
um transmission fluid do you guys know anything about that brand our suppliers have that do they yeah but my biggest concern with this is that transmission filter please get that from the from the dealer really yeah i don’t think i’d do a an aftermarket filter i would get a dealer filter and as long as the the the fluid meets the spec i think you’re safe with any fluid yeah
SPEAKER 12 :
Okay, okay. Well, and obviously this whole kit, like you can get everything, the pump, the oil. They give you the five quarts because that’s about what you lose when you change it, the pump, the pan, the filter, and everything. It’s like $300, so it’s like a good deal. And then I kind of Googled the Rivendell, and that seems to be a high-end oil, but it’s a European oil. Like they use it in a lot of these – Not the Baja 500, but whatever they do over there in Europe that equals that kind of a race, you know, these long races. So they’re sponsors of that stuff. Anyway, okay, so the oil you’re not really concerned about, but the pan you are.
SPEAKER 22 :
The filter.
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 22 :
The filter itself.
SPEAKER 12 :
Okay, because the aftermarket ones, are they just not good, or what don’t you like about them?
SPEAKER 03 :
The transmission is one of the most expensive parts on that vehicle. I mean, you’ve got thousands of moving parts in there. The last thing you want is for an aftermarket filter to take out a transmission.
SPEAKER 12 :
I got you. Okay, so OEM only you’re saying on that?
SPEAKER 03 :
On stuff like that, yes.
SPEAKER 12 :
Okay. All right. Well, I will do that then. I mean, it’s worth the extra money, like you say. It’s an expensive part. I don’t want to replace the whole thing ever.
SPEAKER 03 :
And then just look up spec on the transmission oil itself and make sure whatever you get meets that spec. And I think you’re okay with anything there. That might be somewhere you don’t have to get it from the dealer because the dealer is going to want a bloody fortune for that fluid.
SPEAKER 12 :
that’s what i’m starting to find out well then let me just ask you this if i’m because if you recommend not getting that kit from them i’m not going to use that oil i’ll just get something here what do you guys recommend for that transmission what brand do you recommend
SPEAKER 03 :
I’m going to be honest with you. If you’re already looking to spend $300 or $400, most of our member shops will actually flush that transmission for about that price, I think. And then you’re getting all the fluid out of it. If you just drop that pan, a lot of that fluid is going to stay in the torque converter, and you’re going to be mixing good fluid with bad fluid. Me, personally, I’d like my transmission cooler lines hooked up to a flush machine, push 16 quarts of fluid through it, know that it’s all good, and with 30K, I don’t know how you guys feel. Do you think you need to do the filter?
SPEAKER 06 :
I don’t feel like you need to do the filter at all at that point.
SPEAKER 03 :
I would pay a shop to flush it, honestly, unless you want to do it yourself.
SPEAKER 12 :
Well, I mean, I can’t flush it myself. I would be changing it. But, you know, so now you’re going to make me ask another question. I’m not asking another question. I’m making another comment. You know, you get so many guys who go, yeah, you’ve got to do the filter, never do a flush. I mean, so I hear it from both sides. They never do a flush, always do the filter, which I see both sides of it. Like what you just said, you’re getting all the fluid out of there. You’re getting all new fluid in there. You’re not mixing the fluids, the old with new. I get that. But as far as the filter goes, I mean, with 30, and there’s about 36,000 to 38,000 miles. I can’t remember exactly, but I know it’s not 40,000 miles on this thing, and it’s It’s my wife’s car. It’s, you know, it’s baby. It’s not, you know, rotted or anything like that. But, so you really think just a flush is okay. Even though, why do some of these guys say, never do a flush? You know, you get it from both ends. And now it makes me wonder what, you know what I mean? Like, why are…
SPEAKER 07 :
I would tend to think that the ones that are saying don’t flush it are the ones that aren’t able to, you know, shop-wise, if they don’t have a flush machine or something like that. But I would never say don’t do that. I would say flush it, of course, but changing the filter only, not necessary because these transmissions run so clean. And as long as you’re keeping on top of the fluid, the fluid is the part that’s breaking down typically. And yeah, flushing it is the best way to go.
SPEAKER 09 :
Really?
SPEAKER 07 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 12 :
Well, okay.
SPEAKER 07 :
Less intrusive.
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah. Okay. Okay. And I got one more, please, one more question. I got 2021 Trail Boss.

You listen to Drive Radio because you have a lot of questions about your car. You have questions about what kind of oil to use, what the best tires are, where to get the best parts. But have you ever asked what will happen to your car after you die? Did you know that if you don’t have a will that specifically states what will happen, a probate judge will order your family to split your car evenly. And because you can’t cut up a car into pieces, your family will be forced to sell it and just split the money. According to Michael Bailey, the mobile estate planner, it is estimated that two out of three people don’t have a proper will in place. And oftentimes, things like your favorite classic car are accidentally forgotten completely. Michael understands that the only way to be absolutely certain that all of your final wishes will be honored is to take a small amount of time to talk about it. 720-394-6887 720-394-6887 Call Michael Bailey, the mobile estate planner, right now to set up a free consultation and make absolutely sure that you don’t leave anything to chance.

SPEAKER 06 :
And we’re back. Let’s go back to Ivan and end up where we left off. What was that last question?
SPEAKER 12 :
I have a 2021 Trail Boss with about the same amount of miles on it. Would you recommend the same thing on that tranny, just flushing it?
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah. And is it about 30,000? Yeah. No, about 36, 37.
SPEAKER 12 :
They’re both closer to 40 and 30, both about 37, 38 at the most. Do you ever tow with it or anything?
SPEAKER 07 :
No, no. Okay. You know, 30 to 50, I would say. So you’re probably, you know, you’re kind of dead center there. So I would say it’s not going to hurt to do it at this point. But, yeah, at least by 50 for sure.
SPEAKER 12 :
Okay. So then you’re saying at 50,000 miles do the transmission filter, but right now I could just do a flush.
SPEAKER 07 :
I would just do the flush and probably not worry about the filter at this point.
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah. on both of them, the Durango and the Trailbox both. But then at 50, change the filter.
SPEAKER 07 :
You know, it depends on how the fluid would come out. I mean, if it comes out still fairly clean, I would say, because a lot of times the filters are just a strainer, so they’re not necessarily ever needed to be replaced. the if it’s yeah if it’s an actual you know fiber filter then those are recommended to be replaced at some point but the strainers are both stock because i bought these vehicles brand new so they’re both stock uh filters in them yeah so knowing that uh what do you recommend i can’t remember right off hand on that eight speed if it’s or is that the 10 speed in that if it’s a half ton trail boss
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah, I think it’s a 10-speed, I believe. It says you can have either one.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, I’m not exactly sure what strainer filter that has in it. So we could definitely, if you want to email one of us, we can sure look that up and see.
SPEAKER 03 :
So it also looks like the 10-speed, the exhaust crossover pipe runs directly underneath that transmission pipe on that truck. So it would be easier to just do the flush anyways.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, like a transit.
SPEAKER 12 :
Well, it’s funny you say that. I got a plan for that. I got a muffler guy. Don’t cut it. Well, that’s what I was going to do. Why are you guys saying I cut it now?
SPEAKER 07 :
man no just flush it yeah you know and on our i mean you know speaking from experience i on any of our vehicles and we we usually buy them to keep them until they’re you know not of much use anymore and i couldn’t tell you the last time i pulled the pan to change a filter seriously seriously yeah
SPEAKER 12 :
So just doing the flushes you think for the life of the vehicle would be okay.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 12 :
Every 30K? Right.
SPEAKER 07 :
And we tow big stuff, too.
SPEAKER 12 :
For sure. Yeah.
SPEAKER 07 :
What’s that? And we tow big stuff, too. So the towing is where the fluid typically breaks down. But I’m doing every 30,000 to 50,000 miles. So depending on which vehicle it is. Yeah.
SPEAKER 12 :
For the flush. And you don’t change the filters ever?
SPEAKER 07 :
Do not. Have not. Nope.
SPEAKER 12 :
I’m sure haven’t. Nope. Well, now you guys got me thinking.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, I mean, if you can be less intrusive, and the flush is definitely less intrusive, you don’t have to pull anything apart other than you just separate the cooler lines. And you end up with all clean fluid, not half the fluid. I do like that.
SPEAKER 12 :
That part I do like. I can’t argue with that. If these filters in these things aren’t quite like… Engine oil filter, right?
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, like I said, it’s just more of a strainer. It keeps the big stuff out of circulating. And typically, even when you pull the pan, there’s nothing in it.
SPEAKER 12 :
You’re right. I’ve done panty services on other vehicles, and you’re right. I don’t really notice anything. You’re right. Exactly. All right, guys. Well, thanks for your time. I really appreciate it.
SPEAKER 06 :
Thank you. And let’s go to Steve. You have an insurance claim question? Steve.
SPEAKER 11 :
Good afternoon, guys. Morning, afternoon, evening. Road trip story first. I bought a 1986 CJ7 in 87. In 88, I took a trip from Ohio to California. And I took a US 50 in Utah and Nevada. And just as I crossed into the Utah, into Nevada, as I started going up one of the passes, my jeep decided to go into limp mode. Just as I started going up the hill, I lost all power, but it would idle. It would sit there. It would idle. I could get it to idle. It was fine. But as soon as I tried to press on the gas pedal to go anywhere, it just bogged. So I went into the next town, which was about 80 miles away, 100 miles away, something like that. Got a tow, came back, picked up the Jeep, went back into town. The next morning, I had… They were trying to convince me to replace the fuel pump. And it’s like, no, it’s not the fuel pump. I’m going to drop this fuel tank because the fuel tank I had just replaced and there was a kink in the fuel line right at the top of the tank. And so I dropped the tank, I replaced the hose, and I was on my way. But I was out in the middle of absolutely nowhere when that occurred. I have an insurance question. Ken, first of all, the Sonic is doing fine. Okay. You sent a text to my wife about it. So it still has that harsh… five four downshift. It’s is not quite as bad. But now that it’s gotten cold, it’s gotten a little worse again. Oh, sure. So but anyways, a year ago, my wife was involved in an accident. We about two weeks later after we got some of the paperwork from the accident, which my wife was not at fault for. The insurance company said, well, there’s not enough money on that policy to cover the accident, to cover us, because there was three vehicles involved. And so we kind of put that on a back burner for a little bit.
SPEAKER 07 :
We’ve got about two minutes, Steve, so yeah.
SPEAKER 11 :
Who can I go to? to have kind of a, they want to total it. And so I don’t know whether or not what they’re offering is legitimate. Is there a place that I can go to to get an appraisal, kind of a pre-accident appraisal done to say, okay, this is what this vehicle is worth?
SPEAKER 06 :
Burke could probably do that Burke Payne could do that so his phone number so Burke Payne that’s what he does he’s and he does appraisals on stuff so his phone number is 720 295 0108 and that would be your best bet 0108 okay so they’re offering me three for it yeah but but you know I of course it’s been a year and I’ve spent you know I just spent
SPEAKER 11 :
A boatload of money.
SPEAKER 15 :
Right.
SPEAKER 11 :
Right. Exactly. And, you know, on top of that, I got brand new tires. So it’s all in nice shape. And now they’re coming back to say, hey, you know, we’ll take it off your hands for three grand. It’s like, yeah, no.
SPEAKER 15 :
Right.
SPEAKER 11 :
Right. I want to kind of hold on to it.
SPEAKER 06 :
If you have all those receipts, Burke will help you get some of that money back for sure. Yeah, call Burke, and he should be able to get you going on that. Unfortunately, we have run out of time today. So thank you, Justin, for being here.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, thank you. That was fun.
SPEAKER 06 :
Thank you, Ken, for being here. Thank you, Josh. I appreciate it. Good working with you guys. I enjoyed being on with you today. Yeah, it was great. Thanks, everybody, for listening.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, have a good afternoon.
SPEAKER 06 :
All right, take care.
