Health and Wellness Wednesday gets real on Rush to Reason! John Rush sits down with estate planning attorney Michael Bailey to uncover why failing to prepare your will, power of attorney, or life insurance properly is like inviting the government—the “ultimate boogeyman”—to run your life. From forgotten beneficiaries to estranged family drama, Michael shares stories that drive home why planning ahead saves stress, money, and even relationships.
Later, lifestyle blogger Shanisty Ireland joins John to talk fall family fun, budget-friendly meal planning, and how to avoid fast-food traps during a busy season. And Dr. Julie Gatz breaks down surprising truths
SPEAKER 07 :
This is Rush to Reason.
SPEAKER 05 :
You are going to shut your damn yapper and listen for a change because I got you pegged, sweetheart. You want to take the easy way out because you’re scared. And you’re scared because if you try and fail, there’s only you to blame. Let me break this down for you. Life is scary. Get used to it.
SPEAKER 07 :
There are no magical fixes. With your host, John Rush.
SPEAKER 14 :
My advice to you is to do what your parents did.
SPEAKER 04 :
Get a job, sir. You haven’t made everybody equal. You’ve made them the same, and there’s a big difference.
SPEAKER 11 :
Let me tell you why you’re here. You’re here because you know something. What you know you can’t explain, but you feel it. You’ve felt it your entire life, that there’s something wrong with the world. You don’t know what it is, but it’s there. It is this feeling that has brought you to me.
SPEAKER 18 :
Are you crazy? Am I? Or am I so sane that you just blew your mind?
SPEAKER 03 :
It’s Rush to Reason with your host, John Rush. Presented by Cub Creek Heating and Air Conditioning.
SPEAKER 16 :
I’m Hans. And I’m Franz. And we just want to pop your ass.
SPEAKER 07 :
Welcome to Health and Wellness Wednesdays on Rush to Reason. Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life, sir.
SPEAKER 06 :
I have what doctors call a little bit of a weight problem. I used to grab bear claws as a kid, two at a time, and I’d get them lodged right in this region here.
SPEAKER 09 :
Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don’t shoot their husbands.
SPEAKER 02 :
Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place, and I don’t care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. But it ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.
SPEAKER 17 :
I’m sorry that I’m fat. All right, we are here. Health and Wellness Wednesday. Thank you all for listening. It’s nice and sunny out today versus yesterday, so hopefully you’re all in a better mood. Michael Bailey with me today during this first segment of our Health and Wellness Wednesday, and I always have Michael on during this time, A, because he’s here right before me every Wednesday anyways from 2.30 to 3 with his own program, but on top of that, Yeah, this does involve – what Michael does does definitely involve health and wellness, and I say this a lot, making sure that you’ve got things dialed in prior to something happening to you. It may not be health and wellness for you specifically, but – But it’s definitely health and wellness for those that either you leave behind, or in some cases, Michael, you’re still around, but you can’t make decisions on your own, and somebody else has to be doing that for you. And it’s much better for everybody’s health to get all that stuff handled on the front side versus trying to do it on the back side, which in some cases there is no back side.
SPEAKER 18 :
Right. Well, and, you know, whether it’s your mental health to have it done or their mental health or even their whole – It’s just one of those things that you look at and you’re like, when you know what’s going to happen, you figure it out. It’s a lot less daunting.
SPEAKER 17 :
Correct. And again, personal testimonies along these lines where having these things dialed in on the front side definitely makes life – let’s just say this, Michael. It’s already stressful. Those situations become very stressful in and of themselves. You’re making decisions. You’re doing some things you’re really kind of last-minute thrown into. Nobody wants to be doing those things in the first place, but all of a sudden you are. And I know that having everything – set, done, handled. And for some of you listening, you’re thinking, well, what’s there to do? I can go online and make a will. Well, yeah, I suppose, Michael, you can. But I guess the question is, at the end of the day, have you done it correctly? And what kind of things you’re going to run into if it’s not done correctly?
SPEAKER 18 :
Well, if it’s not done correctly, you’re going to have to do all the same things you do if it is done correctly. You’re just going to have to do them on the court’s timeline and according to the way that the state has dictated that your assets will go. And, you know, actually we were talking about this as we were coming up with new commercials. We’re like, you know, can I think of the government as being the ultimate boogeyman since we’re coming up on Halloween time.
SPEAKER 08 :
Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER 18 :
And the government’s going to be like, hey, this is how we think it should go. And the government doesn’t know a dang thing about you or your life or who you wanted to go to. Or do you want it to go to your spouse? How about your kids? Maybe not to your spouse or to your kids for whatever reasons. Right. You don’t want to be stuck with the default rules and trying to do things on the timelines of the courts with the default rules and figure out what the heck the default rules mean because they’re 80 pages long if you print them out.
SPEAKER 17 :
There’s other things that come up too, Michael, where people forget that maybe you think – that because you’ve been separated from your spouse for X amount of time, but you never officially got those divorce papers handled and signed, or you’ve got an estranged child, or whatever the case may be, let me tell you what, I can tell you from experience, that stuff comes out of the woodwork. Right. I mean, people show up out of nowhere, Michael.
SPEAKER 18 :
Right, or even what is a very common story, you… Set up, you know, you get everything set up and, you know, you married your high school sweetheart and then you buy a life insurance policy and then eventually you split and you find the next love of your life and you’re married to them for 50 years and then you die and your life insurance policy has your high school sweetheart’s name on it. Mm-hmm. Guess what? Your high school sweetheart is getting a whole bunch of money. Cool. Except for that’s not probably what you wanted. Correct. And so it’s just things that you don’t think about, things that don’t come up. And why would it come up? I mean, when’s the last time you checked your life insurance beneficiaries?
SPEAKER 16 :
Me?
SPEAKER 18 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 16 :
Every year? Every year. Yeah. But you know me. Show off. Because we talk about it so much that it’s on my mind probably more than most people.
SPEAKER 18 :
But I bet if we asked Charlie or if we asked many of our listeners out there, they wouldn’t say every year.
SPEAKER 17 :
I would venture to guess, Michael, there are some that set it and forget it.
SPEAKER 18 :
Right.
SPEAKER 17 :
Is that really the answer, probably?
SPEAKER 18 :
Probably. Estate planning is not the old Ronco. Do you remember the Ronco?
SPEAKER 17 :
Oh, yes, I do.
SPEAKER 18 :
Like rotisserie oven. Set it and forget it. That’s not how it works. And so… Whether it’s life circumstances change or what happens if all you have named is your spouse and your spouse passes away before you. Well, then what happens? Well, it goes back into the default rules. Set up your kids. My brother, actually, he’s informed me that he has me listed as the secondary beneficiary on his life insurance, which is very, very trusting of him. Because I would use the money to take care of his kids. But legally, it’s mine. I don’t have to do a darn thing with it besides take it and say, sorry, kids, you’re on your own. I mean, I like my nieces and nephews, but I don’t want to be put in that situation. I don’t want to put somebody else in that situation where suddenly I’m like, oh, yes, yes, I did get a million dollars in life insurance. But, you know, you guys only need about $200,000 to be raised through adulthood. So I’m just going to keep the other $800,000. Sorry. I wouldn’t do that. You wouldn’t do that. But what if somebody fell on hard times and they get a life insurance payment when they’re $200,000 behind on their mortgage? There’s a huge temptation to use that. Great point. And you don’t want to leave it up to chance and you want to say, no, you can’t just use it for yourself. You’ve got to use it for the kids.
SPEAKER 17 :
Well, so I don’t think my family would mind. No, no, you’re fine. I don’t think my family would mind me saying this. We were going over a few things with my wife’s mom last night. She brought up her, you know, medical power of attorney. And so my immediate question was, where’s the others? And I get this kind of blank stare of, well, what do you mean? Where are the others? Well, there’s others besides just medical, as you know, Michael. And so we’re like, yeah, we probably need to further this along because there’s other items we need here. This isn’t all of what we need, right? Right.
SPEAKER 18 :
And you start with the four basic building blocks, the will, the financial power attorney, the medical power attorney, the living will. If there’s more than you need from there, great. But if you don’t have those four, you have a house with three walls. And today it would be great. Yesterday might be a little bit wet. So you don’t want to get soaked here.
SPEAKER 17 :
Correct. So that was a great example of even internally, and we’ll get this fixed. Never fear. We’ll get this handled. But it was one of those questions of where’s the rest of what we need? This is fine. This is great in one instance, but there’s many other life instances that can come up, and we’re not covered there.
SPEAKER 18 :
Sure, and I get calls from people all the time. Oh, well, I’m the power of attorney, but the bank says I can’t talk to them. I’m like, okay, but I have medical power of attorney.
SPEAKER 17 :
That’s not enough.
SPEAKER 18 :
The bank doesn’t care if you have medical power of attorney because you’re not at the bank making medical decisions. You’re at the bank making financial decisions. Well, if you are, you have big problems. You’re in trouble, yeah. Yeah. Right. And if you’re at the doctor trying to say, oh, well, I’ve got financial power of attorney, they’re going to be like, sorry.
SPEAKER 17 :
Yeah. No, that’s one thing. I don’t know that you and I ever all the times we’ve been talking back and forth over all these years. I don’t know that we’ve ever really mentioned that. I think there’s a lot of people, maybe even some of you listening where you have a document and you think, well, I’m covered. I’ve got this. That’s fine for that portion of what might come up, but it’s not fine for all of the other things that might come up. Right.
SPEAKER 18 :
And each of the four basic building blocks has its own separate distinct purpose and reason to have it. And you want to have those people like, oh, well, I’ve got a will. I’m covered. I’m like, well, if you become incapacitated. Your will isn’t going to let your named representative go access your assets to pay for life or make medical decisions.
SPEAKER 17 :
Correct. You have to be dead for it to work. Sorry. Long-term care, all those other things that might come into play.
SPEAKER 18 :
All of those things. That’s right. That’s why you set it up a certain way. Yeah. And, you know, we talk about the government being the ultimate boogeyman, but they set the rules. They’re like, hey, you have to have this to be able to do X, Y, and Z. So we… So you’ve got to play by the rules. That’s right. So that you can get what you want.
SPEAKER 17 :
That’s exactly right. All right. How do folks get a hold of you? How far out are you on getting somebody in? Getting somebody in January of next year. Okay. So my thought is still call, get on the books, get things going. And that sounds like a long way off. And I was telling somebody this yesterday, and they were really shocked when I said this. I’m like, you know, we’re not that far from Christmas. Right. And they looked at me like, huh? I’m like, think about it. We’re almost into October already. You’ll have Thanksgiving, and then it’ll be Christmas. It’s not that far away. No.
SPEAKER 18 :
I mean, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, we know how suddenly you’re like, boom, boom, boom. You’re like, you’re done. So January to come see me, but let’s get the new year started, right? That’s cool. And phone number, 720-394-6887. Website, mobileestateplanning.com, or all the wonderful places we can find you.

SPEAKER 17 :
Back to Rush to Reason. And we are back. Health and Wellness Wednesday. Shanisty Ireland joining us now. Shanisty, welcome back. How are you?
SPEAKER 10 :
Hi, John. I’m doing great. How are you today?
SPEAKER 17 :
I’m great. Always a joy to hear from you. And just real quick, I got to throw this in because for those listening that maybe don’t know you like I do, Shanice, you have a very busy life, have lots of kids. I watched a video the other day of you and your life and so on. And I’m like, oh, my word, how in the world do you get everything done at the end of the day? Honestly, it’s amazing.
SPEAKER 10 :
You know, I don’t sleep, but last night I actually slept for like the first time in a week. So, you know, I have to catch up every once in a while. I know this is Health and Wellness Wednesday, and your listeners probably don’t want to hear that, but every once in a while I get caught up on my sleep.
SPEAKER 08 :
Wow.
SPEAKER 10 :
But it’s great and it’s wonderful. And, you know, I love fall. I love this time of year. And I know we’re getting into Halloween and all of the fall festivities. And it’s just a great time, especially with kids and families, to just get out and enjoy the cooler temperatures. and do some of those fun activities.
SPEAKER 17 :
Yeah, and you’re right. Everything from, and I know in our case, we can kind of cover all the bases. There’s everything from, all right, there’s fall. We’ve got kids. They’re now back in school. We’ve got sporting events. We’re running from here to there to everywhere. We’ve got football parties, tailgates. We’ve got Halloween, as you just mentioned. Reality is, Shanisty, for a lot of people, whether you have kids,
SPEAKER 10 :
kids at home and have families or whether you’re like me and you now have grandkids and you’re still going all sorts of places at the end of the day it’s a busy time of the year for everybody it is and you know i i read something recently and it you know it can be so stressful and you can be so caught up in all of it and then when it’s gone you you pine for it you wish you still had it so you know really taking in the moment and taking in the chaos and and really trying to slow down and really doing the simple things. You know, you don’t have to have these fall festivities and these fall parties that are just unreal and that are going to break the bank. I promise you, especially if you have little kids or grandkids, doing something as simple as painting pumpkins or doing the old-fashioned pumpkin carving, those are memories that they’re going to remember. Going pumpkin picking, apple picking, really simple things that aren’t going to break the bank. That’s what it’s all about.
SPEAKER 17 :
All right. Along the lines of everybody’s busy, we’re still trying to do things where, you know, we keep everybody fed. We do it in a way to where we’re trying to be as healthy as we possibly can, meaning let’s try to avoid stopping at all of the fast food joints and maybe plan ahead a little bit more so that we’re not doing that, which at the end of the day does keep us all more healthy. What are some things folks can do along those lines?
SPEAKER 10 :
You know, plan ahead. I’ve always talked about it. Take Sunday, take Saturday, even take Friday, whatever day of the week makes sense for you and for your family. Sit down, go through a meal plan, get the kids involved in it, too. You know, have them come up with ideas because come Wednesday, if they wanted tacos and then all of a sudden Wednesday rolls around, they don’t want tacos. You can say, you know what? That was your plan all. So you’re giving them.
SPEAKER 17 :
Right.
SPEAKER 10 :
Great point. Going to the grocery store together, picking out some of those healthier snacks, looking for stuff that has the high protein, putting the things like the pork rinds or even, you know, the beef jerky sticks, the chomps, things like that into their lunches, making sure that they have those high protein items in there that’s going to keep them fuller longer. Even when they come home from school, I love having a snackle box or a that’s going to give them – that’s going to tide them over until dinner. Some of those things you can plan ahead so they’re not just jumping to the pantry, jumping to the refrigerator, jumping to the freezer, grabbing ice cream, or you’re not running through a McDonald’s drive-thru or anything like that.
SPEAKER 17 :
Well, and I think for a lot of folks – and this is something that, you know, Shanice, I don’t think I can stress enough. A, we want to make everybody as – keep everybody as healthy as we possibly can, especially our kids. B, and everybody’s on a budget. I don’t care who you are, you’re on a budget. And the reality is every single time you make a trip through one of the drive-thrus, let’s say, we all know that that expense goes up. And I don’t know that any of – I can’t stress that enough. And the best way to save money is to, as you said – plan ahead have some things done on the front side and for a lot of you that are out there listening that have busy lives families all of that you know as you know Shana see there’s so many different tools now that frankly what weren’t even around back when especially when I was a kid but even when I was raising kids what I mean by that is some of the now plug-in coolers that you can go throw in the back of the vehicle most everybody has families has some sort of an SUV so throw a cooler back there and Keep some things cool if you need to. You’re going to go to the ball game instead of stopping at, you know, the fast food joints. Go back to the cooler. Grab some of the things that you’ve been mentioning. There’s all sorts of ways to do this. The key, and you said it, you got to plan ahead.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah, you do. And, you know, especially if you’re going to long soccer tournaments or you’re going on road trips or anything like that, definitely planning ahead and packing the sandwiches, those kinds of things. And if you’re running out of ideas, I mean, John, there is nothing wrong than going to ChatGPT and just plugging in the ingredients that you have in your pantry or your refrigerator and say, Just come up with something easy. These one sheet pan recipes or something that my family is going to love. Keeping in mind some of the things that have high protein, trying to get some meat in there and things that they’re going to enjoy. You know, planning ahead. Honestly, full transparency, last week I was not in the mood to cook. I did exactly what you said. I door dashed a ton of food, and my bill was about $180. I about… flipped out and I said, okay, reset. That was, you know, and it’s okay to splurge every once in a while, but you cannot have many nights of that because not in this economy and not with that big of a family. It’s just not feasible. It doesn’t work.
SPEAKER 17 :
It is not. And, you know, it’s funny. I’ve had this conversation with many a person, not to get off track, Shanice T., but I’ve had this conversation with many a person where You know, I talk about health and wellness on Wednesdays and being healthy and so on. And one of the comments I usually get from people is, well, it’s so expensive to eat healthy. And typically my answer back is not as expensive as going through fast food places and different things along those lines that, by the way, I know a lot of folks do because they think – They’re saving money because, oh, you know, that happy meal isn’t that much money. It is when you start stacking them all on top of one another, Shanasty. And to your point, you can make this stuff yourself. Keep in mind, every time something is made for you, you’re paying for somebody to do so.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yes, and it’s just unhealthy. We just don’t know what’s going into those things. We don’t know all of the ingredients. And when you’re making it at home, even when you’re buying the hamburger patties or you’re buying the buns, at least you have some sense of the ingredients that’s going into it. So it just makes sense to just try to do as many things as possible. And I know people work. I know they’re running to six different sporting events in an evening or whatever, and I know it can get chaotic. So really taking the time on your day that you don’t have as many things and just sitting down and doing the work. We always tell our kids, eat the frog, do the thing you don’t want to do, and just get it over with because you’re going to be so thankful when things get chaotic later on in the week.
SPEAKER 17 :
One item that I don’t know much about because we haven’t talked a lot about this, and this must be a new company that you guys are representing and talking about, and that’s the bakehouse bread. I don’t think you and I have talked about this one yet. Talk about it because I don’t know much about this one yet.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah. Bakehouse bread, it is absolutely delicious. It tastes fresh out of the bakery. They have zucchini bread. They have banana bread. I love serving this even as a breakfast treat. It’s sweet enough that you could even put it in a lunchbox as a delicious dessert. In fact, they have one of the number one zucchini breads right now, and it is incredible. It’s bakery soft every single time. It tastes just like Grandma made, really delicious, and high-quality ingredients, wholesome, really delicious. And you can actually pick it up there locally, I believe at King Soopers.
SPEAKER 17 :
Yep, that’s what I’m reading in my notes. And, again, I will do this. I will actually go grab some of this, give it a trial myself. And I get it. In a lot of cases, no. Is this going to be an everyday staple? Of course not. But there’s times of the week where you’re going to find the need to have something you need to fill in with. And I’ll go as far as to say this, Shanice, even if this were an everyday for somebody versus going through a drive-thru, eat this. You’re still going to be better off at the end of the day.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah, and you’re going to save some money too because, man, it does add up. It’s unbelievable. And it’s okay to splurge, like I said, every once in a while, but we really have to pinch pennies when we can because we want to have extra money to do those fun fall things. We want to have the opportunity to go on a hayride or go to a haunted house or whatever it is you’re going to do for the fall and enjoy those family memories with your kids or your grandkids.
SPEAKER 17 :
I did notice, too, that for those of you listening, this is one of those things, too, where you can load up on a few at a time. If you find them on sale or something, they’re freeze-friendly, meaning you can freeze them, unthaw them, still use them again. They’re using all real ingredients when they make this bread. It really is, Shanice, just like you were making it on your own, other than in this case, you may not have the time to, or even in some cases, Shanice, the skill set to do so. If that’s the case, go pick this up at your local King Soopers, and off you go.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yes, I really encourage everyone to give it a try because that’s a good point too. The skill set or even the time. If you don’t have the time to bake the zucchini bread or the banana bread in the morning, give it a try because it’s really delicious and nobody will know that you bought it. It tastes that good, that’s for sure.
SPEAKER 17 :
All right, for those of you listening, we do have a Halloween charcuterie board recipe. I’ll stick that into my show notes so you guys can take that and use that a little bit later. Most likely, probably have Shanisty on one more time before Halloween anyway, so Shanisty, we maybe can even talk a little bit more about that the next time you’re on, but I appreciate taking time. I know you are, again, I’m amazed at the things that you get done. You are super busy, and every time you’re with us, I’m just amazed at how gracious you are to us and taking the time and I appreciate it greatly. How do folks find you?
SPEAKER 10 :
Oh, I love it. Hop over to Instagram. It’s just at Shanice D. Ireland. Of course, I have YouTube, Facebook. I also have a blog, She’s Becoming Domestic.com. Hopefully, in the next couple of weeks, I’ll have a lot more Halloween recipes on there, witches brew, and all sorts of fun stuff.
SPEAKER 17 :
Shanice D., again, as always, I appreciate it. You’ve become a great friend of ours on the show, and I appreciate all you do.
SPEAKER 10 :
Thank you so much, John. Have a great evening.
SPEAKER 17 :
You’re very welcome. You bet. Take care. Have a great rest of your fall, by the way. We’ll probably talk to her again next month, though, so I shouldn’t say it that way. We’ll get her back here in October. Typically, we do. Love Shanna Stee. She’s a great lady, has a great family, by the way, and she’s amazing just to watch and how she does everything family-wise. SPEAKER 07 :
This isn’t rage radio. This is real, relatable radio. Back to Rush to Reason.
SPEAKER 17 :
And we are back, Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560, Health and Wellness Wednesday. Dr. Julie Gatz is joining us now. Dr. Julie, welcome back.
SPEAKER 09 :
Hi, thanks. Nice to be here.
SPEAKER 17 :
Always a joy having you. In my notes, the title of our conversation today is Cheese Dreams. In other words, is there any truth to the fact that if you eat cheese before bed, you get nightmares?
SPEAKER 09 :
it actually can be very true.
SPEAKER 17 :
I did not know that.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah, you know, the thing about it is dairy is a very hard product for most of us to break down. We don’t have the enzyme lactase to break down the dairy products. There’s a lot of calcium in dairy, but that is the least area that you’re going to be getting your calcium from. Maybe calf gets calcium from the dairy and has the enzymes to break it down, but When we’re putting things in that our gut can’t quite handle, it’s going to cause toxins and bloating and, you know, basically unbroken down fermented food. And that can cause nightmares and restless legs and uncomfortable sleeping and all sorts of crazy hormone stuff.
SPEAKER 17 :
Okay. So folks listening and they’re thinking, yeah, but I’m always hungry before bed, Dr. Julie. So I guess the question would be why and then what should I eat if I really am hungry?
SPEAKER 09 :
So usually people who are hungry before bed skipped breakfast or ate carbohydrate-type breakfast, like a piece of toast and coffee or cereal or silly things like that. So usually breakfast skippers are hungry at night. So what you do is you eat protein in the morning, you eat protein in the afternoon, you eat enough protein at dinner, and lo and behold, you might find that you are as satisfied as you’re supposed to be. And I’m talking good protein, not just grabbing a handful of nuts and calling it good protein.
SPEAKER 17 :
Okay. So in other words, what we’re doing during the day can have a factor on that. Okay. What happens if we find ourselves where there’s a particular day and maybe there’s somebody listening and they’ve had a long day. They had meetings after work. They really didn’t get a chance to have a good meal. And so now they’re back home. By the way, I do this sometimes. Sometimes this happens to me. Now, all of a sudden, you’re back home. It’s nine o’clock. You go to bed at 930 or 10, but you want to eat something because you’re starving. What should you eat?
SPEAKER 09 :
An egg, a hard boiled egg. I do not love eggs. I never have. But, you know, the more I learned, the more I researched, the more I actually saw results. I had to change my mind and start to like eggs. So, you know, fish and chicken is also easier to break down than red meats. So you do want the proteins. This is not where you want to make the popcorn and have the chips and snack on the chocolate and eat the ice cream. This is where you actually have to go, all right, fine. I didn’t do quite a great job today. Have a big glass of water. Have some protein. Have an egg. If you want to nibble on some carrots, some celery. I don’t think that’s going to necessarily handle you, but if you like the crunch, then that’s going to be fine for you as well.
SPEAKER 17 :
Okay. Are there certain – I mean, I’m sure there is, and I already know. There are certain foods we should just avoid, period, no matter what, especially before bed, right?
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah. I mean, the best thing that you can just, as a rule of thumb, is just avoid most of the grains.
SPEAKER 17 :
So in other words, that slice of pizza, probably not a real good idea?
SPEAKER 09 :
Yes, that’s true. The pasta, the sandwich, the pancakes. All that stuff is just we really have ruined our grains in this country, and I’m seeing so much more sensitivities to grains than I’ve ever seen in 34 years of practice, and it’s because our guts have been so inflamed, and it takes about 10 years to sort of show it up in the population. Well, it definitely has been showing up for longer than that. So, you know, if you can at all costs avoid grains, including the gluten-free type things, it doesn’t mean that all of them still have Roundup used on them. I mean, if you want to do organic, great, but, you know, that’s also questionable as well. So I’m saying, you know, this is where you want to eat your vegetables, have the protein, you know, have some fruit, and, you know, be mindful about your diet because – You know, every fast food restaurant is basically designed to make you unhealthy.
SPEAKER 17 :
Very true. And by the way, make you want to come back. That’s the other biggest thing, as you know, Dr. Julie, they do is they have got that quote-unquote special sauce whereby it is designed to make you want to crave more of it and come back again and again. Am I right?
SPEAKER 09 :
Absolutely, yes. And, you know, just the behind-the-scenes information is really disturbing that it actually makes you go, wow. as great as McDonald’s fries are, I don’t think I want another one. Yeah.
SPEAKER 17 :
Yeah. Great point. Okay. What about, and this is something I know we talk about this periodically, but I know this has to feed into what, sorry, the pun there, but it has to feed into what we’re talking about. And that is, what about what we’re drinking and consuming along those lines?
SPEAKER 09 :
You know, the best thing that I can say is there are just so many choices that we never had growing up. I mean, I took a video of the aisle that has all the different choices of drinks the other day.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 1 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 09 :
It was working at the store was like, what are you doing here?
SPEAKER 17 :
Really quick. I want to stop you for a moment because you’re right. I mean, I can remember as a kid and by the way, the grocery stores were even smaller when you and I were kids. That’s one thing we don’t talk much about the size of the store. wasn’t even what it is today, meaning every aisle had less in it, by the way. But the drink aisle especially, Dr. Julie, I grew up, and first of all, having soda was a real treat. We didn’t have a lot of it because it just wasn’t, you know, it cost money. And it wasn’t as, in our world, it was a luxury, I guess you could say. So we had a lot of, you know, lemonade and water and iced tea and things like that. And to your point, the aisle itself just didn’t have that much in it.
SPEAKER 09 :
No, it did not. I had your basic pops in there. But other than that, now it’s just it’s crazy. And, you know, the amount of sugar and weird things in it and and crazy ingredients that are making them blue. And it’s just crazy. I mean, I can basically say wipe yourself out of that aisle. You know, just don’t even walk down it. If you are thirsty, get yourself a glass of water. If you want to, you know, flavor it, flavor it naturally. You know, grow some peppermint and put some leaves in it. You know, take some berries and let it sit in it overnight. Put some orange slices, lemon slices, cucumber slices. There’s so many ways to make water more interesting, but it also is the very basic things that our cells need, and they don’t need flavored water. I see a lot of my patients coming in, and they’re taking all these electrolytes, and I’m certain that some of them are actually very healthy. They’re taking so much of it that they’re having strange symptoms. I’m here in Florida, and everyone’s like, I need more electrolytes. And I’m like, I don’t really think that you need that many more.
SPEAKER 17 :
Good point.
SPEAKER 09 :
So I’m like, knock them all out, drink water.
SPEAKER 17 :
Okay, so you’re the doctor. You see patients. What are some of the side effects of having too many?
SPEAKER 09 :
Well, what happens is when you take too many electrolytes, it starts taking yours from your body. So people start getting headaches and they’re fatigued and they have twitching. I’m a chiropractor, so when I adjust them, they’re just not holding quite well. They can’t sleep as great. Yeah, I’m like, all right, let’s talk. So then I have to dig into, you know, what are they doing? And I’ve seen so many patients lately because I think the electrolyte marketing is getting hit really hard right now.
SPEAKER 17 :
Okay. Again, I learned something. Every time you’re on, I learn something new, and that one I would have never guessed makes total sense. What about, and this is something where, you know, and again, I’m by no means an expert when it comes to tea. I like regular iced tea. That’s about the extent of my experience. tea knowledge, but I know some people will take teas for everything from, you know, it’s going to make me sleep better or it’s going to keep me unconstipated or it’s going to do this or it’s going to do that. Is there any truth to those? Are there some teas we should avoid?
SPEAKER 09 :
The ones to avoid are the green, the black, and the white tea. Now, I know everyone says green tea is healthy, and yes, it has a lot of wonderful properties, but that was in China when they were eating really great food and that wasn’t the problem. So you start putting green tea in somebody’s diet now and it acts very similar as coffee. It changes how they absorb, so it alkalizes their digestive system and you don’t get the nutrition in quite as well. Now, conversely, there are thousands of remedies in normal herbs and roots and flowers of teas that I encourage all my patients to take a really good look at because there are things to handle muscle cramps and to you know, make your skin nicer. I mean, I make, you know, natural teas constantly at my house, only because I am not very good at drinking water. So I have to do something.
SPEAKER 17 :
Yeah, you and me both. I’m kind of that way as well.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah, I’m growing right now a butterfly pea plant that has the most gorgeous blue flowers. And I take the dried flowers, I put them in hot water, and it turns completely dark blue when you add lemon, it goes lavender. So for me, Just the artistic of it all. Then I find out what all the properties are. So I have hibiscus flowers and leaves in the back and I have lemongrass. And so I’m making these different teas just because I’m growing them. But you could go to the tea store or get on the Internet and start looking at all the different things that teas offer.
SPEAKER 17 :
Okay. When it comes to, you know, even folks that drink like regular iced tea, let’s say at lunchtime, is there any ill effect on doing that? I mean, do they need to ask the restaurant if they’re getting an actual iced tea, what’s in it, or is iced tea iced tea is iced tea?
SPEAKER 09 :
Iced tea is basically iced tea. Usually they’re making it from Lipton, and, you know, it’s just the basic, and, you know, it does taste delish, but, you know, what’s happening is people are starting then to, they boost the adrenals, which you don’t want to necessarily do that every single day because then you start to rely on it. Now you need two teas. Then later you need a little something else and some chocolate and a little sugar. And we should be able to create our own energy because we’re eating decent foods. And we can supplement with things like good digestive enzymes to break our foods down and things like that. But we can usually get what we generally need – I say that kind of funny because food has changed so much. We’re in a weird world right now that I would say still stick to the basics on what you need as far as food first rather than trying to boost your energy with weird drinks and other foods.
SPEAKER 17 :
Talk to us about Absorbate. It’s something that you and I talk about regularly. For those of you listening, I buy the large bottles now because I take one or two of them every single day, mainly because I take one before bed every night. Now, religiously, even when I travel, I take enough to make sure I have one every night. possibly one during the day depending upon you know what’s going on dr julie and i know there’s folks that probably think oh my word why would you do that well for me personally if you have any type of i don’t know dr julie just you know strange gut or you ate something maybe that was a little spicier or whatever the case may be that absorbate just settles all of that down and you sleep better
SPEAKER 09 :
It’s true. And absorbate is a digestive enzyme that has all natural enzymes that come from fruits and plants and vegetables. So it’s a vegan formula. When you take it, let’s say you’re a healthy eater and you have three meals a day. When you take one or two per meal, it aids in breaking down that meal. So you get more nutrition basically every time you eat. If you’re not a good eater, it helps to break down to get the nutrients that you can from that meal. also helps to get rid of the toxins. So it will handle and help to break down bacteria, toxins, poisons, and viruses. When you take it on an empty stomach, like at night, it helps with inflammation. So let’s say you’ve been digging in the garden, your back hurts, your hands are achy, you can take it and you’re a heck of a lot better the next morning. So I think it’s more important than taking a multivitamin because it will aid in breaking down the foods that you’ve bought, prepared, and hope that people like, including yourself. So for me, it’s a must, and you can give it to dogs. You can give it to elderly. You can give it to the kids. It’s just all plant material.
SPEAKER 17 :
All right. Where do we get it?
SPEAKER 09 :
You can go to the website, which is naturesources.com, and they offer some free samples on that website or 20% off your first order. You can also call the 1-800 number if you use the code RADIO. They’ll also send you some free samples or 20% off. So that phone number is 1-800-827-7656. So you can hear all this great data. Unless you do something about it, you’re just smarter but not better. So, you know, they make it super easy. Get on the website, call the phone number, and check it out for yourself.
SPEAKER 17 :
And again, folks, personal testimony, and I am not a spokesperson. I guess maybe I should be by now, Dr. Julie, but I don’t get any product for free. I buy all of my own product. I utilize it on literally a daily, weekly, now several, gosh, I don’t know, probably been even a year now, Dr. Julie. I’ve been using it for quite some time. And here’s what’s happened with me. I’ll just give you a little side note here. Started using it kind of when, you know, my stomach didn’t really feel quite well or maybe ate something a little spicy, so then, you know, you just took it. Then kind of became, okay, I think I’ll just take one before a meal. Okay, now I think I’ll just take one before bed. I mean, it’s the point now to where literally I am religiously taking them when I eat and when I go to bed every single time.
SPEAKER 09 :
It’s just so smart. And, you know, one point that we didn’t mention in the show is if you have to think about your digestive more than once a day, your digestive tract, then something’s probably not working properly. If you have any gas, bloating, indigestion, heartburn, diarrhea, constipation, acid reflux, all those things are saying whatever you’re eating, you’re not breaking down. Something’s not correct. Your digestive system should be an efficient system that you don’t have to think about. So You know, the first thing that I’ll throw at that with anybody is throw some absorbate into their digestive system, but then also correct their diet with what we talked about today. And I would say 90% of the patients improve just with those few things.
SPEAKER 17 :
I’ve been reading a lot lately, and I don’t know why. It’s just one of those things where, you know, all of a sudden you get on something and I’ll start reading, and then you know how the Internet works when you start reading. Now you start getting videos on it and different things and so on. And fasting, I’ve read and looked at a lot here lately when it comes to fasting. And for those of you listening, not just the I’m going to eat one meal a day type fasting, Dr. Julie, but literally in some cases taking two or three days having water only and and the health benefits of, is that a gimmick or is there some real truth to that?
SPEAKER 09 :
No, there’s definitely truth to it. And, you know, I always like when the body gets a little shocked somehow and, you know, you switch it up a bit. You know, it sort of needs to feel like it needs to survive at a higher level sometimes. And, you know, fasting does so many chemical changes to the system at a cellular level. including, you know, creating better, more stem cells and fighting inflammation and, you know, just sort of letting the whole gut just go, oh, thank you so much.
SPEAKER 17 :
The other thing I’ve read that it really benefits in is the whole insulin control end of things. Is there truth to that as well?
SPEAKER 09 :
Absolutely. So, you know, before anybody’s fast, they should do some research because it’s not just drink water. You definitely want to get some information. I’ve had a lot of, you know, patients that just said, oh, I drank water for 15 days and you know, the downfall of that. So there is electrolytes you need to take. There’s things you want to do, and, you know, make sure that you follow the fasting rules. So read a couple of articles on it, and you’ll see what I’m talking about.
SPEAKER 17 :
Okay, so again, what I’m reading and learning is it’s not a fallacy. There really is some solid truth to it, and again, all the stuff that I’m reading and seeing, at first you’re sort of like, wait a minute, that sounds like too good to be true, but from what you’re telling me is, no, it actually does work.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah, absolutely. And, you know, it’s intermittent fasting too. It’s good to mix things up a bit. And, you know, I’m okay with people eating, you know, plants for a short bit. I really do believe that we need protein from, you know, fish and chicken and eggs and things like that. But, you know, if you’re switching it up a little bit and sticking with it, you’ll find where you actually sort of do the best. Some people do really great on just protein. Others don’t. you know, can’t do that sort of a gig. Others can’t fast and others need six times a day. They need to eat small meals. So, you know, if you goof around with it a bit, you’ll kind of find where you do that.
SPEAKER 17 :
How do folks find you, Dr. Julie? I know that you’re a co-founder of the Florida Wellness Institute. Give us information on how folks can find you.
SPEAKER 09 :
I have an Instagram, which is the Florida Wellness Institute. So you can get on that and, you know, read about some things that I do, but mostly, you know, mostly I’m connected to the, uh, TheNatureSources.com just because I love this. I love this product so much I could talk about it all night with you.
SPEAKER 17 :
Yeah, you and I both. It works for all of you listening. Absolutely. Go get it. I can’t stress that enough. It will. I don’t think I’m wrong in saying this, Dr. Julie. It’s a life changer. Go get it. Use it. It really does change things immensely.
SPEAKER 09 :
It really does. I’m just in love. So I have a bowl of it on my counter. I don’t even unscrew the top of the bottle. It’s just, you know, grab a couple, grab a couple, put a few in my pocket.

SPEAKER 07 :
Suck it up, buttercup. Back to Rush to Reason.
SPEAKER 17 :
All right, we are back. Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560. Okay, I have a couple of minutes here, and I’ll just give you, this is quick, and you’ve got to make your own decision when it’s all said and done, but I finally, my wife and I and some of our family, went to Casa Bonita. last night and some of you maybe have already been and have you know experiences of your own and i’ll give you just my you know 100 foot view not discouraging anybody you probably need to go and do things on your own and figure it out that way food is it better yes is it gourmet no is it worth the price of admission No, in my opinion. That’s just me talking. And you guys all know me. I’m not a cheapskate by any means, but is it worth the price of admission? No, it is not. So you do whatever you need to do as far as that goes. But the plus sides. It’s a nice place. I mean, they have redone it all and redone it in a way to where literally it’s like walking back in time to when I was a kid and when things back then were pretty new and you were walking around and everything looked new and felt new and was new. It’s that way again. So that part, I will give them credit. They did a fabulous job of remaking everything. Literally not quite exactly the same way it was when we were kids because the cafeteria-style line thing where you get your food doesn’t exist anymore. You order at your table. You’ve got several different choices of things to order. Not a ton. I mean, the menu is very short. You’re not ordering – again, you’re not ordering a bunch of gourmet stuff. It’s a set menu, and you order one of whatever the five or six things are that are there, and off you go. And you no longer walk down the cafeteria line like you used to, which, by the way, is a good thing. They still take you to wherever your seat would be. You don’t get to pick your seat. So depending upon the size of your group will depend upon where you actually end up sitting. Are you near the waterfall? Are you off in some side room? Are you back in the little cave area? You know, all the same things, which, by the way, isn’t any different than when you were kids used to go through the tray line. get all your food, and then somebody would escort you to a place to sit. That is very much the same other than you’re being escorted on the front site. There are, and Charlie said, maybe because of different things that have gone on politically and so on. I don’t know how long they’ve been there, but there’s metal detectors. So don’t bring your pocket knife or anything along those lines. If you do, you’re going to be taking that stuff back to the car because you’re not getting in with that. Fortunately, my wife called me early enough to where I left my knife because I always have a knife on me, left that in the car before I ever got in, which was a good thing. and they literally scan you upside one side, down the other. It’s actually probably because the technology isn’t as good, but it’s actually more intrusive than going to a ballgame. Again, probably because the scanners aren’t as good as what you would get at the ballgames, but it doesn’t take much to set one off. So if you want to go to Casa Bonita, just go. Be warned, for adults, it’s $40 a person. plus tip, meaning it’s going to be right around 50 bucks a head to go to Casa Bonita. And that doesn’t include, that’s just soft drinks. If you get any other type of alcoholic beverage, it’s going to be more than that. Just keep that in mind. So that’s my 100-foot view of Casa Bonita. You can always text me directly if you want any other answers. But we’ll be back. Hour number two is next. Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560.
