You are going to shut your damn yapper and listen for a change because I got you pegged, sweetheart. You want to take the easy way out because you’re scared. And you’re scared because if you try and fail, there’s only you to blame. Let me break this down for you. Life is scary. Get used to it. There are no magical fixes.
SPEAKER 32 :
With your host, John Rush.
SPEAKER 45 :
My advice to you is to do what your parents did.
SPEAKER 18 :
Hi mom. Hi sweetheart. Is my adorable grandson in school? Yep. Is your hair getting whiter or is that paint? I’m painting your room. Painting my room? You had a purple room. Moby grape. We’re upsizing. We’re hosting a foreign exchange student from Cairo. What about your grandson? It’ll be great for little Ryan to experience another culture. Got an extra paintbrush?
SPEAKER 12 :

SPEAKER 10 :
Do you think you’d notice if you were missing half your money or half your friends, your better half? What if you were missing half your kidney function? You’d think you’d notice, but you could have chronic kidney disease right now and not even notice at all. I’m Dr. Keith Norris, Associate Dean for Research at Charles Drew University, and according to the National Kidney Foundation, 20 million people have chronic kidney disease and 20 million more may be at risk and not even know it. Chronic kidney disease is a growing epidemic. Anyone with high blood pressure, diabetes, or family history of chronic kidney disease is at risk. Certain ethnic groups are at an even higher risk. Early diagnosis and treatment of this disease and its complications are vitally important. To get the whole story on chronic kidney disease, talk to your doctor and visit the National Kidney Foundation at kidney.org or call 1-800-622-9010 for a free brochure. That’s kidney.org or 1-800-622-9010. Because when it comes to chronic kidney disease, you might not know the half of it.
SPEAKER 24 :
As a doctor, I see patients every day who are losing their vision to age-related macular degeneration, also known as AMD. If you have blurry vision or blind spots, they can be symptoms of AMD, and if untreated, could lead to blindness. The good news? AMD can be managed with effective, clinically approved treatments that may reverse some vision loss. For free AMD information, contact the Foundation Fighting Blindness at 1-800-BLINDNESS. That’s 1-800-BLINDNESS. There is a cure in sight.
SPEAKER 41 :
Right now, there are hundreds of Colorado children who are waiting for a family. We’re looking for some really special people to be foster and adoptive parents to these children. Could you be one of them? Listen to Mark and Diana’s story.
SPEAKER 23 :
We thought about adopting because we couldn’t have our own kids.
SPEAKER 06 :
Some friends told us about Denver Human Services.
SPEAKER 23 :
And I think with kids, what’s real exciting is to watch them blossom and watch them grow.
SPEAKER 06 :
I would say to people who are interested is just to be there for the children.
SPEAKER 22 :
We wanted to do some sharing, and that’s what having kids is all about, is sharing your life.
SPEAKER 41 :
Change a life forever by becoming a foster or adoptive parent. Call toll-free 866-229-7605 or visit us on the web at changealifeforever.org. And just like Mark and Diana, you may find that the life you change is your own.

I’m Jeff Gordon, warning parents about pertussis. What’s that? Well, imagine a cough barreling through your infant’s body at up to 100 miles per hour with enough force to make him gasp for air for weeks, even months. Pertussis, or whooping cough, is potentially fatal. Now imagine you gave this to your baby. Parents most often spread pertussis, And even when babies themselves are vaccinated, they’re probably not protected until they’ve had at least three doses. I’m working with March of Dimes to urge you to help protect your baby by protecting yourself. Ask your health care provider about the adult pertussis vaccine. Because we can’t stop pertussis fast enough. Learn more at soundsofpertussis.com.
SPEAKER 09 :
Car 44, proceed to Beale Street. Unsafe trampoline in progress.
SPEAKER 36 :
That’s us, Sam. Right, Pete. Step on it.
SPEAKER 14 :
All right, kids, come down off that thing.
SPEAKER 46 :
What’s the problem, officer? Were the children doing something wrong?
SPEAKER 36 :
Unsafe trampoline, ma’am. Your kids were asking for trouble.
SPEAKER 46 :
But it’s just a backyard toy.
SPEAKER 36 :
Ma’am, trampolines cause 91,000 emergency room injuries in one year. We say one kid on a tramp is one kid too many. Two kids, you’re playing with fire. At the very least, you need protective padding around the frame here. And always, an adult spotter.
SPEAKER 38 :
Say, who are you guys anyway?
SPEAKER 36 :
We’re everywhere, son. We’re the Trampolice.

Did you know that each and every day, 21 United States veterans commit suicide? Last year, active duty suicides surpassed the number of combat deaths. When soldiers come home, it is a huge adjustment, and they’re often plagued with disabilities, such as immobility, PTSD, or a traumatic brain injury. You can help by donating to Freedom Service Dogs. This nonprofit rescues dogs from local shelters and trains them to become service dogs for these heroes. Help give back to those who have given so much. Donate now at freedomservicedogs.org.

Hey, there he is. How’s it going? I’m having a stroke. Are you going to shake my hand or what? I’m having a stroke. Wow, you’re not even moving your arm. I’m having a stroke. Are you okay? I’m having a stroke. Your face looks weird, too. I’m having a stroke. Are you having a seizure or something? I’m having a stroke.
SPEAKER 40 :
When someone is having a stroke, they may not be able to say it with words, but their body language will tell you loud and clear. I’m having a stroke. You just need to know the sudden signs. Look for FAST, F-A-S-T, F, face drooping, A, arm weakness, or S, speech difficulty. Then T, time. Time to call 911 immediately because the sooner they get to the hospital, the sooner they’ll get treatment. And that can make a remarkable difference in their recovery. Know the sudden signs. SPEAKER 47 :

SPEAKER 28 :
Just buzzed? Oh, then your girlfriend is fine.
SPEAKER 35 :

SPEAKER 28 :

Every 28 seconds, a car in the US is stolen. What’s even more shocking is that 25% of those vehicles had the keys inside. 60% were left unlocked, and 95% had no anti-theft devices. In times like these, protect yourself from auto theft by taking extra precautions. Never leave your vehicle running or with the keys in the ignition. Always lock your doors and keep your windows closed, even when parked in front of your own home. When away, park in busy, well-lighted places and never leave valuables in plain view. Equip your car or truck with an alarm or other theft deterrent device. Never leave your vehicle registration in your car. If you do become a victim of auto theft, report it immediately. Have your make, model, license plate, and vehicle ID number available to help authorities recover your vehicle. To learn more about protecting yourself from auto theft, visit ncpc.org or contact your local law enforcement agency.

Veteran Windows and Doors knows that when you’re feeling cold drafts near your windows, that means your windows are likely failing. Cold air seeping through and ice in between your window panes are just a couple of signs that your windows aren’t functioning as they should. When windows are installed incorrectly or the windows are not properly engineered for your area, the mechanics of your home will start to decline. This causes your home to not maintain the temperature inside and makes your HVAC system work overtime, increasing your energy costs. Veteran Windows and Doors guarantees the windows they install are up to code and engineered for your area, so you can be confident your windows will work. Veteran makes sure every window is weather tight, meaning the window is sealed and properly flashed so that no weather ever gets inside. Connect with Dave and Veteran Windows and Doors to receive 40% off three or more windows with free installation by going to klzradio.com. This is Rush to Reason.

SPEAKER 01 :
Get a job first. You haven’t made everybody equal. You’ve made them the same, and there’s a big difference.
SPEAKER 11 :
Let me tell you why you’re here. You’re here because you know something. What you know you can’t explain, but you feel it. You’ve felt it your entire life, that there’s something wrong with the world. You don’t know what it is, but it’s there. It is this feeling that has brought you to me.
SPEAKER 25 :
Are you crazy? Am I? Or am I so sane that you just blew your mind?
SPEAKER 27 :
It’s Rush to Reason with your host, John Rush.
SPEAKER 21 :
I am Hans. And I am Franz. And we just want to pop your heart.
SPEAKER 33 :
Welcome to Health and Wellness Wednesdays on Rush to Reason.
SPEAKER 28 :
Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life, sir.
SPEAKER 37 :
I have what doctors call a little bit of a weight problem. I used to grab bear claws as a kid, two at a time, and I’d get them lodged right in this region here.
SPEAKER 13 :
Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don’t shoot their husbands.
SPEAKER 44 :
Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place, and I don’t care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. But it ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.
SPEAKER 25 :
I’m sorry that I’m fat. Welcome, everybody, to this Health and Wellness Wednesdays. You’re expecting John Rush. Well, it’s Dr. Scott filling in for John. Thank you for your patience. We had a little difficulty with microphones. And by playing extra commercials, John can pay me a bigger salary. I’m just kidding. I do this for free. But I do appreciate you being here. We have a couple of guests in the studio. My good friend Sam Peterson from MindSpot Denver.
SPEAKER 19 :
Thanks for having me, Scott. Certainly.
SPEAKER 25 :
And then we have Annette McFadden from Colorado Greenhouse Builders.
SPEAKER 09 :
Dr. Scott, thanks for having me.
SPEAKER 25 :
It’s my pleasure. So a couple of housekeeping things, just like last time, is there at my place, Castle Rock Regenerative Health Care, we’re going to be having our open house March 8th. That’s a Saturday from 9 to 3. So, come and take a look at everything we have, and at the very end, we’re giving away cards for a free MycB12 injection. And then, stem cell sale. Yes, you heard me say that right. Umbilical cord stem cells, one day and one day only. It’s like the old blue light specials with Kmart. Remember those? I remember those when I was a kid.
SPEAKER 19 :
I don’t know if you want to be in the same bin as Kmart.
SPEAKER 25 :
No, but a little nostalgia, right, for those old people.
SPEAKER 19 :
Maybe like Target. You’re like a super Target.
SPEAKER 25 :
I don’t even walk near a Target.
SPEAKER 19 :
There’s two left for me. Oh, what do you shop at Walmart? Come on.
SPEAKER 25 :
Yeah, of course. So March 15th, 25% off sale for umbilical cord stem cells. Again, for the FDA that’s listening, even though Bobby Kennedy Jr. is going to clean that place up. These cells are for regenerative medicine, so it’s an off-label use. So they have not been approved by the FDA for anything I might be talking about over the next three hours. Okay. So after that, let’s jump right into it because that difficulty with microphones, we have a little truncated first hour. So listeners, I need you to listen really fast because we’re going to go fast. So Annette, I wanted to go to you first. So you are with Colorado Greenhouse Builders out in Kiowa. You guys make phenomenal products. Greenhouses. I mean, they’re aesthetically gorgeous. You guys use cedar, other top quality, I say ingredients, but materials is the word I’m looking for. So one of the things that you guys are doing for me is you’re putting in a geothermal greenhouse. So what are the advantages here in Colorado to using geothermal?
SPEAKER 09 :
Biothermal adds to your growing season. What it does is it may get you a three-season, depending on where you live and what you want to grow, possibly four seasons. And once again, it really depends on what you want to grow. If you’re trying to grow tropical plants, trees and tropical plants in January and February, it’s going to be a little difficult. But it does extend the growing season and it kind of puts some heat in there through the natural process. We put a system underneath the greenhouse and it’s connected to fans and So keep in mind, a geothermal system will require electrical. We’ve done some solar. We’re working on trying to find that connection, that right recipe for the right solar system to be able to run a geothermal but we’re not quite there yet we can run other things in the greenhouse with solar fans and some things like that lighting but the geo the whole entire system including like a heater would be would would require a little bigger solar system
SPEAKER 25 :
Okay. But by running electricity, you have the capability of basically making a tropical paradise, right? You can grow tropical plants.
SPEAKER 09 :
You can.
SPEAKER 25 :
And that’s exactly what I’m going to do at 7,000 feet. Good. Yes.
SPEAKER 09 :
I hope you do. I hope it works. Yes.
SPEAKER 25 :
Yeah. With Jason’s help, that’s exactly what I’m going to do. Now I won’t be doing the planting. My daughter will, because I have a black thumb. I kill everything literally. Um, but she’s pretty good.
SPEAKER 19 :
Just plants though, right?
SPEAKER 25 :
Yes. That’s right. Well, once they dig the hole for the geothermal, I’ve got a window of opportunity to, Hey, just saying. Um, next question for you, Annette, does size matter?
SPEAKER 09 :
Well, yes, it does. Okay. I thought so. Yes. Yes. So one of the first thing people tell us is, you know, I wish we would have gone a little bigger. We can fill these greenhouses up like nothing. I mean, it’s – but what we’ve done is we’ve created a product that will allow you to grow vertical. So – and you’re going to see this, Dr. Scott, when we build yours. It’s tall. You can grow – With beams, you can grow hanging, you can grow shelving, you can grow raised beds. So we try to utilize the whole entire greenhouse to do this.
SPEAKER 25 :
Yes, yes, and yes. I want it all.
SPEAKER 09 :
But keep in mind that the components to successful growing are soil and location and the direction the greenhouse is facing. And once again, I’ve said this before here on this show with John that You don’t have to live on acreage to have a successful garden to feel sustainable and to contribute. You can be in an apartment and you can do microgreens and you can grow herbs in a window seal. So it’s just kind of really trying to figure out what your situation is, what you want to do. And of course the education on… Our health, all the things you guys are going to probably talk about here today is why we build greenhouses. We want to create a situation where anybody can at least try to look out for their health and control what they’re putting in their body.
SPEAKER 25 :
Yeah, get away from pesticides is a big one, especially glyphosate.
SPEAKER 09 :
And, you know, I’m not even comfortable buying organic. Depending on where you buy it from, you really need to do your research. We are so much better off going with an heirloom seed and a good soil and taking that into our own hands.
SPEAKER 25 :
Okay, so I know that the listeners out there – and thank you for listening, by the way, they’re thinking, okay, I’ve got, like you said, I live in an apartment or they’re like myself, okay, I’ve got 11 acres and I can put whatever size greenhouse I want and everywhere in between, right? You’re in a subdivision, you’re in a duplex, something like that. What I hear you saying is you guys have a product that can be customized to for whatever size, wherever you’re at.
SPEAKER 09 :
Is that right? Yes. Well, we can’t build somebody in an apartment, a greenhouse. I don’t know why not. There’s products. A few engineering issues with that, Scott. There is products that they can do some hydroponic stuff, microgreens. Like I said, they can grow herbs on your table with some lighting. So there’s all those things, but The good thing is we are working with subdivisions, and I’m talking about subdivisions where the houses are very close to one another. Cookie cutter houses, yeah. Very little yards. No backyard. We are working with developers actually in Elizabeth at one of the subdivisions on the northwest corner of Albert County. And we have developed a community grow. So we’re taking this subdivision and we’ve created a community greenhouse. We’ve developed them a whole area that they’re going to be, everybody can participate in growing and they have. And it has been so successful. We’re trying to incorporate chickens into this subdivision. And we are doing this with other subdivisions now. So I’m hoping it’s going to be a thing that is going to just spread.
SPEAKER 25 :
Well, I posited that same thought last week. I said, well, why aren’t a lot of these people in these subdivisions taking over their HOA, right, get voted in, and then say, let’s get together and put a greenhouse, because most of these subdivisions have a green space, a lot of green space.
SPEAKER 14 :
Most of them, yep.
SPEAKER 25 :
Why don’t we put in a community greenhouse and all share? We all share in the labor, but we all share in the product that comes out from it and start taking care of our health for ourselves and our kids.
SPEAKER 09 :
And it is. That’s the concept we see even in urban Denver. I see it a lot. They’re creating neighborhood greenhouses, neighborhood garden centers. I’ve seen it at schools. We’re building a lot of greenhouses for schools. And I love that idea because they’re incorporating math. You can talk about math when you’re doing… doing a geothermal there’s calculations there’s measuring there’s a number of things that these teachers are teaching physics i love it yes they’re incorporating learning with growing and it’s awesome yeah well fantastic so we’re gonna go to a break sorry about that but when we come back last time you started to talk to me about biochar
SPEAKER 25 :
This product that you guys are getting out of South Dakota, or was it North Dakota? South Dakota. That is going to be incredible. So let’s go to a break, and then when we come back, please talk to us about biochar from hemp. So you’re listening to Dr. Scott filling in for John Rush, 560-KLZ. We’ll be right back.
SPEAKER 17 :

Reading is Fundamental, an American Stonehenge by Mike Goldstein, is a book your kids need to become better readers. Goldstein knows that reading is the key to the rest of the world. Our kids spend four to six hours per day on their screens, passively consuming without the need to think, learn, and read. American Stonehenge will transport your middle or early high schooler into an imaginative world that challenges their vocabulary as they read, making them better able to actively participate in the world around them. They learn to investigate, understand, and challenge the assertions that are made to them, and how to use their imagination and intelligence to become more independent as you, their guide, help them grow. Listen online, klzradio.com. Back to Rush to Reason. Welcome back, listeners. You’re listening to Dr. Scott filling in for John Rush. And by the way, no, nothing is wrong with John. He’s just taking an extended vacation. He will be back next week. If you want to be a participant on the show, you can give us a call at 303-477-5600. 303-477-5600. So we were talking with Annette from Colorado Greenhouse Builders, and last week you guys had teased me with this biochar product that you’re adding to soil. So just really briefly, what is biochar and what are you seeing when you add it to soil? So
SPEAKER 09 :
gassy components and just just to let you know how that’s working this gentleman friend of ours in South Dakota said they’re starting to test it with cows all those people that hate the gassy emissions coming from cows not me because I love beef but those people who hate beef and hate cows are going to be happy to know that this is they’re starting to use it on cows
SPEAKER 25 :
So what happens when you add it to your soil? And let’s say I have my greenhouse now and I’m growing my heirloom tomatoes, big beefsteak tomatoes and some cherry tomatoes and zucchini and you name it. What does it do for that soil?
SPEAKER 09 :
I think it cleans it up. It takes some of those bad components out. And I know originally I think it was created for water purification at some point. So there’s a whole long history of it. And I think they’re using it in different ways. aspects now and i’m learning about it through for soil because that’s what we do and we have a lot of interest in people’s well we know we’ve depleted the nutrients in our soil and that’s that’s nationwide so we’ve got to take all measures to kind of time see what we need to do to replenish right and we know that if we plant soy it will replenish the nitrogen that’s what we’re doing in the philippines uh my wife and i are part of a company that
SPEAKER 25 :
is doing that because they’ve grown so many pineapples for so many years that it has depleted the soil. But you can’t ask every farmer to put soybean in the ground to help replenish that. So maybe this is the answer, that biochar from hemp that has been used for oil or rope or whatever else. Okay. So if somebody wanted to learn more, they could reach out to you or Jason, your husband.
SPEAKER 09 :
We’ve got information about it, and I am actually using it in my greenhouse and my exterior raised beds. So I’m kind of an example, and I can tell you it’s been a huge benefit.
SPEAKER 25 :
Better than Miracle-Gro?
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah, I don’t use Miracle-Gro. Okay. No, I wouldn’t use Miracle-Gro. But, you know, you can get the good things for your soil from the living creatures or the living material that they grow in your yard. There’s nothing better for your garden, your compost pile, than leaves, branches. Those things that were once living and breathing, we want to collect them and keep them and throw them because they have the nutrients. So the best thing you can do is keep your leaves. Leaves are valuable in my opinion.
SPEAKER 25 :
Okay, so that leads to the next logical question is do you guys create a compost section next to your greenhouses?
SPEAKER 09 :
Absolutely. I have a huge compost bin. As a matter of fact, I have a giant pile that it takes my whole skid steer to move.
SPEAKER 25 :
Wow, okay. Do I get one of those with my greenhouse?
SPEAKER 19 :
Well… No power tools, Scott.
SPEAKER 25 :
Oh, man. Rats. My backhoe, I got a big backhoe, so I can move a lot of big piles.
SPEAKER 09 :
So it’s the same concept. Have you ever, at the end of the year, the winter time’s over, and you got a pile of leaves in a corner, you rake them up, and underneath it’s beautiful green?
SPEAKER 25 :
Uh-huh.
SPEAKER 09 :
That’s the same concept.
SPEAKER 25 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 09 :
So keep your leaves…
SPEAKER 25 :
I got a lot of them.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah, as well as your eggshells.
SPEAKER 25 :
Okay, you got it. Let’s talk about Harvest Place and then your community groups while we have time.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yes, so the Harvest Place is something that we, through our greenhouse business, have developed a network of people that are growing amazing things in greenhouses. Either greenhouses that we’ve built or gardens or just people we’ve met. And it started with the self-reliance expo that we did in Albert County two years in a row. And it just kind of grew and grew and grew. So we’ve created a permanent place for that function. And it’s going to be like a permanent year-round farmer’s market place. You’re going to be able to get anything from beef, pork, eggs, whatever, herbs, that honey, any of those products, we’re going to bring together permanently. So you’ll be able to stop in any time, and if there’s something local that’s available, you’re going to be able to have access to it. And we’re hoping this is just the beginning of what’s to come because we’ve been invited to share this concept with a couple of other counties and possibly take it there. So I think it’s bringing wonderful products that are safe, that they’re local. We’re putting the money back into the local businesses, and I’m hoping it goes from there.
SPEAKER 25 :
So a really cool farmer’s market.
SPEAKER 09 :
Absolutely. Year round permanent place. These people are going to have a permanent booth that they’re always going to be available.
SPEAKER 25 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 25 :
All right. So how do people get ahold of you and your husband, Jason?
SPEAKER 09 :
Right. They can go on to Colorado greenhouse builders. They can, I have a place there. My phone number’s there. My email address is available. They can reach out with any questions they have. And if I don’t know the answer, I’ll connect them with whoever I can.
SPEAKER 25 :
That’s wonderful. Well, and thank you for joining us here in the studio. God bless you and Jason. I look forward to my greenhouse, and anybody who wants to come and look at it, because I’ve seen the one down at CAF. For those along the front range or transplants that don’t know Colorado that well, if you go down just below Castle Rock, heading south towards Colorado Springs, on the east-hand side, about where they’re doing the construction now for the new Costco, that overpass, is the 4-H Center, and it’s called CAF. And one of your greenhouses is there. Right. You want to be impressed with craftsmanship and nice materials because you guys use cedar on that. Yeah. And mine’s going to be made out of cedar.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah. Western red cedar. Very nice. It’s beautiful.
SPEAKER 25 :
All right. So we’re going to segue now, Sam. I want to talk mental health, veterans. We have another guest coming up who has a heart for vets just like you do because you were that guy in the Army. You were an EOD expert blowing up bombs and stuff like that. Came back. You were in a very low, dark place. Had your .45 in your mouth. Thank God that your friend texted you. You put down the gun to answer a text.
SPEAKER 19 :
You know, hey.
SPEAKER 25 :
Whatever it takes, right?
SPEAKER 19 :
What else are you going to do? Exactly.
SPEAKER 25 :
So found yourself in this dark place. You took it upon yourself because, I hate to say it, the VA wasn’t helping you and a lot of your friends.
SPEAKER 19 :
Well, I was still in the Army at that point. Oh, okay. So you were active duty. Yeah, I was still active duty at that point. I was just about to get out.
SPEAKER 25 :
Okay, you were going to punch out.
SPEAKER 19 :
Yeah, I was going to punch out within about nine months.
SPEAKER 25 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 19 :
So, you know, dealing with that whole loss of identity thing, didn’t have a job lined up afterwards, and was, you know, still dealing with a lot of these mental health issues, got put on, you know, every pill under the sun. The Army loves to prescribe SSRIs. And, yeah, it caused a ton of problems. And, you know, trying to medicate away panic attacks is really, really difficult.
SPEAKER 25 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 19 :
you know, without putting you on like a long-term high dose Benzo.
SPEAKER 25 :
Yeah. So in the final hour, I have a plan between five and six. I’m going to bring Dr. Claude Fortin, the neurologist that, uh, you guys had a great conversation last week. I want to carry this forward, but right now, uh, we’ve got a couple of minutes before we go to a break. Tell me what it is about MindSpot Denver. That’s the center that you created to help people. And you don’t have to be a veteran, right?
SPEAKER 19 :
No, you don’t. We take, uh, we take all, uh, major insurance carriers.
SPEAKER 25 :
Okay. So what is it about Mind Spa Denver that you do differently than, say, the VA or a psychiatrist who wants to put you on the couch and shrink your brain?
SPEAKER 19 :
Yeah, well, what we do is we really get to the root cause of the issues that we’re treating. We really specialize in treating depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and traumatic brain injuries. We help a lot of veterans and a lot of first responders. And that piece that makes us different is targeting one of the root causes that all four of those issues have in common. And there’s two primary things that all those things have in common. One, they’re highly, highly inflammatory to the brain. So whether you’re depressed, you’re anxious, you’re dealing with PTSD or traumatic brain injury, your brain is in a constant state of inflammation that causes a lot of knock on effects that we can go into later. But by targeting that inflammation and targeting the issues with interconnectivity of the brain that that causes, we can help patients feel better, faster and stay better longer.
SPEAKER 25 :
Well, I’m glad you’re talking about inflammation of the brain because in that last hour, I want to drive this point home, and we’re going to have a great conversation with Dr. Fortin, is we now have realized it is no longer a hypothesis. It is a fact that dementia is a metabolic disorder. Oh, yeah. We now know that. Right. So all the studies from recent drug trials where the big pharma was going after the – The tau protein, every one of those drugs pretty much failed and caused swelling of the brain and hemorrhaging.
SPEAKER 19 :
Yeah, well, you know, your neurons are made of tau proteins.
SPEAKER 25 :
So let’s attack it with an mRNA.
SPEAKER 19 :
Yeah, let’s attack the Legos that your neurons are built out of so that we can clean up the after effects. It makes zero sense.
SPEAKER 25 :
It makes zero sense. So, folks, stick with us for the next couple of hours because you are going to find this, especially the last hour, really fascinating on mitochondria metabolism. And how can we prevent and reverse dementia and other neurologic disorders? So let’s go to a quick break. We’ll be back on the backside. And then I’ll be introducing Elizabeth Robinson. She also works with vets with a company called Even Pulse down in the West Cliff, Colorado Springs area. So different approach. Not one size fits all, but I would like to hear what she has to say, how she can help folks in her area. So you’re listening to Dr. Scott filling in for John Rush, 560 KLZ. We’ll be right back.

And you’re listening to Dr. Scott on 560 KLZ filling in for John Rush. So I wanted to bring in a friend of mine, Elizabeth Robinson. She runs Even Pulse along with her husband, Stephen, down in that West Cliff area. So, Elizabeth, I’m not going to spend a lot of time talking. I’m just going to sit back and listen to what you and Stephen have to say because we have about 10 minutes, and I want you to get as much information out as you possibly can about So tell us about yourself, your company, and what you can do for our veterans.
SPEAKER 05 :
All right. Hi, Dr. Scott, and hi, Sam and Annette. Stephen and I are here with you from our home office in Westcliff, Colorado. We do most of our work traveling all over the country, primarily to military bases to work with active duty. We have worked with a fair amount of returning veterans, families, EMS, firefighters, etc., What we basically do is a human performance and stress mitigation education and training model. So we’re not doing therapy or any kind of one-on-one work. We work primarily with large audiences. And we’re basically teaching people how the brain, body, and nervous system adapt to the stress response. So when we get triggered by whatever it is in the environment or internally, how does the brain, body, nervous system respond. And when we have that information, I know when I learned this from the neurologist that we were working with for 15 years, I suddenly saw the roadmap of my life and why I behaved the way that I did. And, you know, one of the things that was very, very helpful was learning direct skills for how to navigate the stress response because truly it, It lives in the soma. It lives in the body. So while the head shed might be someplace we have to regulate stress, the real impacts of it live in our physiology. And so from my background and everything that I’ve been exposed to as a young person and as a young adult, I started to learn how to navigate the internal response. And that was an absolute game changer for me with my own post-traumatic stress. I don’t have a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress, but I… Well, I’m a doctor.
SPEAKER 25 :
I’ll give you one. There. Now you got it.
SPEAKER 05 :
There you go. Because most every single human being has post-traumatic stress because we are alive. Yeah. So, yeah, it’s a real skills-based model. And that’s what we focus on with helping people to be empowered early on as we were developing this model. I said to Steven, you know, I want to know what I can do at 2 in the morning without a doctor, a therapist, or a prescription.
SPEAKER 25 :
Or a gun in your mouth.
SPEAKER 05 :
Or a gun in my mouth. I’ve got to have this built inside of me. And I am a true believer that we are equipped with what we need internally, but we’ve lost our way to it. And oftentimes we are looking outside of ourselves for the help that we need. And sometimes it’s really a nice mixture of both. endogenous and exogenous in terms of how we find the solutions that are going to help us.
SPEAKER 25 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 21 :
Yeah. And Hey guys, this is Steven.
SPEAKER 25 :
Hi Steven. Hi.
SPEAKER 21 :
I just wanted to add to that, you know, we’ve, we’ve done a lot of work across the DOD space. We’ve trained about 60,000 people. And one of the pieces of feedback we’ve gotten is why didn’t I get this when I was first coming in? Then I would have really understood my experience and, you know, Sam and others out there and, I even saw someone on your website that I know, Sam. You know, the feedback we’ve gotten is that by understanding the brain, nervous system, and body’s reaction and response to intense life experiences, I call them files, these ways of looking at it really help the service member to understand, hey, I could go get assistance. So we have a naturally kind of destigmatizing approach to but also because we used quite a few prior service special operators and other people with a lot of combat experience as part of our team, both to help inform the model but also to guide how it would reach the service member. I think we’ve got a language that really fits both the ethos and a lot of the mindset of a service member population.
SPEAKER 19 :
You guys have a lot of expletives in your curriculum then?
SPEAKER 21 :
Yeah, I think one or two F-bombs have been dropped in the past, although it’s been a little harder to get away with that in the modern military culture, but maybe we can get back to it.
SPEAKER 19 :
Come down to the EOD shops. We’ve got quite the throwback going on.
SPEAKER 05 :
There we go.
SPEAKER 25 :
So can somebody be self-referred to you guys, or how does this work?
SPEAKER 05 :
Ask that question again. I’m sorry, Dr. Scott.
SPEAKER 25 :
military members, we call ourselves troops.
SPEAKER 19 :
Leave it to the Air Force guy to try to label everybody.
SPEAKER 25 :
That’s exactly right. So you guys, my understanding is that you specialize in military personnel. Is that right?
SPEAKER 05 :
We do. And our contracts really, we are hired by commanders in the field. We’ve never been pushed down from the Pentagon on down into the military space. We have been scrappy and out on the streets for the last almost 24 years, getting contracts at the level of the troops by their commanders. So we’ve worked with all branches of service.
SPEAKER 21 :
Every branch of service. We’ve done a lot of work in the last few years with the Air Force. continuing to work with Air and Army National Guard. We’ve done a fair amount of work with SOCOM. And outside of the military, we’ve trained about 6,000 cops and a couple thousand firefighters. We’ve worked with individuals in pretty much every arena, a couple of sports teams, some NCAA teams. So, you know, it’s kind of a broad breadth model. We can dial it to fit the audience. And A lot of individuals take the course online, so we have people with stress and resilience needs of all kinds who take the course online as well.
SPEAKER 25 :
Okay, so if I’m living down in Colorado Springs, do I call you? Do I go on your website? Do I have my commander or my battalion chief? If I’m a firefighter or my lieutenant, if I’m a cop, reach out to you guys? How does this work?
SPEAKER 05 :
Yes. So, I mean, obviously, people who are in charge of groups of people contact us all the time. And generally, it’s the commanders or training directors that bring us in. An individual can go to our website, which is evenpulse.com. That’s E-V-E-N-P-U-L-S-E dot com. And you can take our course online at a self-paced, you know, in a self-paced way. So not in a group setting, but just do it online. You can do it with your spouse. You can, it’s all broken down into segments. It can also be taken for continuing education. So we can, you know, set somebody up to choose that where they can get a certificate of completion at the end of the course. Okay.
SPEAKER 25 :
Go ahead.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah. And I think for your listeners out there, one of the things that has helped me the most and And, Stephen, because even after 24 years of teaching this, there’s never a day that goes by, and, Sam, I’m sure you could probably agree with this, that where you’re not self-regulating, you’re not practicing what it is to be masterful of your stress response because the world is so incredibly stressful. And what we teach is actually built inside the human condition. But, again, we’ve gotten so far away from that path inside of ourselves, that natural path. And so one of the pieces of the training that’s most important is when we go from behaving and thinking and breathing by default and we flip that switch and start doing it with deliberate intent. And when we can do that over and over and over again and just keep practicing and keep creating support within the network, to do things together. I really do believe there isn’t anything that we can’t heal and recover from, especially in community.
SPEAKER 25 :
Yeah. So it sounds like what you guys do and what Sam does is you’re giving people tools to kind of bring them down off the ledge. And it’s an adjunct or a help to what Sam does. So you’re not telling people lay on a couch and tell me about your childhood, right?
SPEAKER 05 :
Negative.
SPEAKER 25 :
Okay, because I can see a special operator going, dude, I am not laying on your couch, and I’m not going to tell you about my childhood. All right, so I hear the music. Elizabeth and Stephen, thank you so much for joining us. I want to give you a chance to give a shout-out to your company. How do people reach you? One more time.
SPEAKER 05 :
It’ll be www.evenpulse.com. That’s evenpulse.com. and they can reach us at 303-579-3370.
SPEAKER 25 :
Fantastic. Thank you for being on our show, and thank you for what you do for our troops. You’re listening to Dr. Scott Faulkner filling in for John Rush, and we’ll be back at the top of the hour.
