Being an expert on general automotive knowledge, what would the correct ignition timing be on a 1955 Bel Air Chevrolet with a 327 cubic inch engine and a four barrel carburetor?

It is a trick question. Watch this. Because Chevy didn’t make a 327 in 55. The 327 didn’t come out until 62. And it wasn’t offered in the Bel Air with a four-barrel carb until 64. However, in 1964, the correct ignition timing would be four degrees before top dead center.

Items you should always keep in your car. We were talking about snow brushes. We’ll get into a few other items as well. Now, one reminder, too, this time of the year, and most of you probably have taken care of this, but if not, you’re overdue, and that is look at the tires on your car. And I am one where I’m – this is kind of my sticking point. If you don’t have half tread or more heading into winter – Take those off, save them. You can run them next summer just fine. Save those tires, put new on, and run 50% or more in the winter is what I think you should do.

And save those tires. Most people have the ability to stick four tires somewhere, basement, attic, whatever. You figure out a place to store those, and off you go. Jeff, are you with us now?

I’m good. I just had to call you guys, start talking about NACs, and you compared it to frosting, and you put a smile on my face.

It kind of is.

No, it’s perfect.

I don’t know. Ken did a good job describing it because I don’t think I could have done that. No, it is.
SPEAKER 14 :
Yeah. It’s the most nasty stuff in the world looking because it just sits there, you know, 300 days a year and you never touch it. It’s so funny. It’s amazing. So, no, I just messed with the race. You know, and I think even on hold, I think I kind of answered my own question. But what we’re doing is I’ve got the – so I race these little front-wheel drive cars, and mine’s the Cavalier. and an F-23 transmission, and the gear ratio is, I believe, 396. Does that make sense?
SPEAKER 1 :

It could be, yeah.

And what we do is we, like yesterday, I happened to find, can you hear me? Yeah. I happened to find if you can go to a 441 gear, okay, for the same transmission, and they came on the Saturn View, right? Okay.
SPEAKER 08 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 14 :
So what we do, it’s real, you know, they’re like gold dust, and you find these manual Saturn views, which I didn’t make very many of them. Right. You know what I mean? And so I’ve got that. Now, with that, basically what that’s doing for me, it basically gives me like a two-and-a-half gear if I was used to my 396, right? Like third would be two-and-a-half kind of feeling, right? I mean, it would give me a little more RPM in third gear and second gear. you would hit the chip a little earlier, you’d be a little higher into the band.
SPEAKER 07 :
Is that right, do you think? Yeah. And there are all over the Internet. AI would even do this. Just use a calculator to tell you exactly. Yeah. There’s gear ratio calculators that will tell you exactly what RPM you’ll be at and everything.
SPEAKER 14 :
What I did ask AI, and I haven’t done it yet, is the teeth count on those. And I had the guy down at AAA transmission right there at I-25 and 6th Avenue. I think it’s called A1 Transmission. It’s an all-manual transmission shop down there. Do you know that one? Yes. Yeah. Yeah. He’s amazing. That guy knows more about manual transmission. But he’ll grab one off the shelf, and he can count the teeth and know right away.
SPEAKER 07 :
Uh-huh. What the ratio is, sure. Yep.
SPEAKER 14 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 07 :
That’s why you do ring opinions and other things as well, because it’s just off the tooth count as to what the ratio is going to be at the end of the day.
SPEAKER 14 :
So it’s my… Saturn View, is it going to have – I haven’t torn them up. I’m going to go over to Transmission Shop, and he’s going to tear it apart and help me look at it and count them up. So my second gear would have more teeth, you think, then? How does that work? Which one has more teeth?
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, gearing it down would be more teeth on the output gear, absolutely.
SPEAKER 07 :
Higher the ratio, more teeth.
SPEAKER 14 :
So that Saturn Vue one, you may have, like, an extra tooth. That was how you could tell.
SPEAKER 06 :
Probably one or two. So the drive gear would have less. The output should have more. Right. Is lower gearing.
SPEAKER 07 :
Right. And I don’t know enough about that transmission to know if it’s one or two teeth, Jeff. But, yes, I mean, theoretically, you’re on the right track. Yes.
SPEAKER 14 :
AI loved it. They were like, that’s going to be the best bang for your buck to get more horsepower. That’s funny.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah. That’s funny. He’s excitable.
SPEAKER 14 :
I’ll tell you what. I go out to the scrapyard, and right now it’s… And I found this view, and I love this sport because we do. I’m finding… I found a hub off of… And we’re in a… Not too many guys do this out this way. So my junkyards are all full of the parts that we need. You go to the Midwest and stuff, and they’re gone. Like, we had to… Our safety hub, we use the hubs off of… It was an 86… uh chrysler le baron the new yorkers there’s all those that have that similar hub and you and so you go out and you find it and then you build it out you know i took it to a machinist he took and spins it down and we’ve welded on a new big piece of plate you know and makes our rear hub uh you know safer or whatever but yet but uh i’ll tell you what yesterday i was out there at the Poland pay. It’s like I told somebody the other day, it’s my happy place. It’s a junkyard. And she looked at me like, you’ve got to be out of your mind.
SPEAKER 10 :
I spent a lot of time in one of those places as a kid. When I was 18? Yep, that was mine too. That was mine too, absolutely.
SPEAKER 14 :
You know how it is. And you get into this compact race, and you do. You find all these things. Okay, I go out there and eat these yards today, and it’s 99% Latino guys out there. I mean, it’s a line. You’ll be there. There’s 100 people at the place. There may be two white boys and 95, you know what I mean? That’s an interesting thing that’s going on right now.
SPEAKER 07 :
It really is. No, you’re right.
SPEAKER 14 :
As I’m walking out, I look, and I’m like, I need somebody to help me. I’ve got to get that transmission, you know what I mean, out of this. And I’m like, by myself, I’m 50 years old. I’m like, it’s not as easy anymore, you know? So this guy, he’s getting in his truck, and, hey, man, you know, you speak English. I’m like, I speak a little Spanish. It’d be dangerous. And anyway, he spoke pretty good English. And he’s like, yeah, you know, I’ll meet you. I say, how many days a week do you come out here? He’s like, oh, five. Wow.
SPEAKER 06 :
Oh, wow. He lives there. Wow.
SPEAKER 14 :
He does. Home from home. I’m over there working on this motor. And I know I need to take the motor out. get those transmissions out of their safety it’s really the way to do that first just get the motor and everything out and all one you’re not gonna people that try to subframe yeah right and try to get it like a harness oh there’s room yeah it’s just it’s way easier just take the motor completely out and yeah you drop the subframe is how we did it anyway the dude comes and helps me i looked at my watch we had the motor was out i had the transmission on the the little cart thing and out, and I was driving out of the parking lot. I think it took us about 20 minutes.
SPEAKER 08 :
Wow. Nice. Good for you.
SPEAKER 14 :
He was, like, watching. It was amazing. He was, like, watching, you know, like, John Force’s crew chief just tearing apart this. He had dropped so many motors out there. It was crazy. I mean, he had an assistant with him. It was just, yeah, anyway. That was my story.
SPEAKER 10 :
That’s great. Yeah. Well, and you think back to the Midwest, like, everything of 20 years or older, it’s going to be rusted to nothing. So they’ve already scrapped it and it’s gone. So, and I know a lot of the local salvage yards don’t hold anything more than 10 years, you know, and just makes sense. It’s just a newer vehicles. Right. Yeah. Parts we’re looking for. So, yeah.
SPEAKER 14 :
Yeah. The rust is, we’re lucky here for our ideas. There’s a whole business there. You know what I mean? Those guys are, And they don’t hold them, so they got to get out there and strip them down. I mean, there’s good money in all these.
SPEAKER 07 :
Well, that’s why I was talking to Josh the other day at Ridgeline about this. That’s why a lot of the totals are getting to be more and more because the insurance companies realize the value of the car itself. And even though it’s wrecked, they can part that car out and usually get quite a bit of money back out of it. That’s why a lot of cars now, Jeff, are getting totaled that maybe a few years ago wouldn’t have been because of what you’re saying.
SPEAKER 10 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 07 :
well the cost between new parts and used parts aren’t isn’t very much right right and uh so no and they’re realizing you know power plants transmissions other components interior pieces seats you know all those different things that we’re talking about yeah they can they can scrap the car out you know quote unquote and get more money out of it than they can in trying to fix it so they don’t they total it yeah in some cases you can have like i know the bearings on ours
SPEAKER 14 :
or like this, and probably some pumps and stuff, that a used OEM can be better than a brand-new aftermarket that’s cheap. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER 06 :
Yes, sometimes.
SPEAKER 14 :
It pays to go sometimes. If it’s not overly used on that, you know, a lot of customers, as the guy was telling me, Chewy’s his name, and he was saying that his customer was out to get a couple water pumps that he could pull real quick, and the customer was a $200 water pump, and so he was like, yeah, I’ll do that, you know, and he can take some, you know, 10 minutes to pull a water pump and there you go. There’s your $50 water pump that I just paid $10 for or whatever.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, that seems more like a maintenance item. More power to him, but yeah, I wouldn’t be doing that. More power to him.
SPEAKER 14 :
You know, and it’s the customer, and with him, sometimes these people demand it, right? Even you guys, for sure, you’ll see them walk away, but they’ve got to go somewhere and then They’ll end up with, you know what I mean, okay, I’ll do whatever you want. And then they’ll end up back with us.
SPEAKER 06 :
Right. They’ll have to do it again the next year.
SPEAKER 07 :
I’ve thrown so many used water pumps away over the years, that’s one of those items I will not use. Yeah, right. Period.
SPEAKER 14 :
Right. Have you guys seen the, do you guys watch that Dave’s Auto at the engine shop? Dave’s?
SPEAKER 07 :
I try not to because he drives me crazy, but I do occasionally because somebody will send me something. Okay, you know the guy.
SPEAKER 14 :
Okay, okay, you know the guy.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, and I say that because, I mean, they’re a clickbait shop. I don’t know how to say this, and I’m not trying to be negative, but they’re a clickbait shop. They put a lot of stuff out that in some cases is partially true, some cases not true at all. Some cases they’re spot on. It just depends. But let’s just say this. They’re making more money off of TikTok than they are in the shop. Sure. And that’s why they keep doing it.
SPEAKER 14 :
I did notice the comments. He’s got 400-some comments the other day. I was like, jeez.
SPEAKER 07 :
I’m not joking. He’s making more money on social media than he is in the shop.
SPEAKER 14 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 07 :
And there’s a lot of shops that are doing that. More power to them, not taking anything away from those guys. But the problem I have with Dave is all the information is not always accurate. Okay. That’s the problem I have with him. For example, what I went over last winter with his whole cold start nonsense he went through, which he was so out of line on. No offense with me. He lost all credibility with me when he went through that because he was so inaccurate it was ridiculous.
SPEAKER 14 :
Okay. I’m a little new to watching them, you know what I mean? Like, it’s been, I don’t know, maybe… He’s an entertainer.
SPEAKER 07 :
I mean, Jeff, and I’ll tell this to everybody else, there’s a lot of these guys out there, some are really good, some are not so good, and most of them have learned how to entertain through their channel, and they do a good job of it. They get great viewership, and frankly, if they never fixed another car, it wouldn’t matter. They’re making plenty of money doing what they’re doing.
SPEAKER 14 :
Probably the one that he got me, I guess he went around to shop, and we had the shop Mastercraft right down in Englewood, and we paid all our guys… for my dad better get you know we did we paid everybody very very good right and he did he walked around his shop one day and he would he was point-blank water and after everybody you know how you doing like how much do i pay you know if they were at whatever you know and everybody really was except you know real happy and they did he did pay the guys right and i just i think so i was a part of the unknown and i think i’m not taking away from any these guys along those lines i think they all do well
SPEAKER 07 :
in that and i’m not saying these guys you know don’t fix cars or don’t do anything along those lines but just remember this is something i remind everybody of every one of these types of of influencers which is what they are they’re making money off of what they do and the more you watch their videos the more you share their videos the more you forward that video and do things with it or even bookmark it and save it that’s how they make money so every single time they get more and more viewers they make more and more money that’s what they’re after And, you know, rightfully so, not taking anything away from them, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re experts in the field. They’re just entertainers. Right.
SPEAKER 14 :
Yeah. What’s this? If you see, there’s another one on my feed right now. It’s like a lube. What’s it called? He pours it in his little machine, and it’s smoking away, and he pours a little stuff in there.
SPEAKER 07 :
BG’s been doing that same test for years and years and years. I’ve seen that so many times. I watched it when I was probably 10 years old. It was the first time I ever saw that. It’s a good test. It’s real. It’s reliable. And the BG product does exactly the same thing you’re seeing that do. No different. Exactly the same.

Is it hot shot or something? It’s like a red and white can or something?

And your dad was a lot like my dad. We’re within about a year of each other in age and grew up very much similar, except I spent 30 years in the Army moonlighting at the shop for years. Probably just like you replacing my dad telling me the news I don’t want to hear for a job I really don’t want to do, but probably have to.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yep. Uh-huh. Understand that one.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yep. So, at any rate, to cut to the chase here, I’ve picked up a 97 F-150 with a 4.6. Okay. One owner, California truck, beautiful condition, and… Picked it up from my grandson and went through it front to back. He had a little trouble with the intermittent starting deal. Turned out fuel pump relay was bad. Put a clutch fan on it, the other thing. And a unique problem I hadn’t seen in years, he raises dogs. He’s got a kennel of these show dogs. And, of course, the kennels are in the garage. Dog hair everywhere. Wonder why it was getting hot. Pulled a top radiator shroud cover off. And he had sucked up enough dog hair in there to make a sweater. Wow.
SPEAKER 06 :
Or another dog.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah, make another dog.
SPEAKER 07 :
That’s good.
SPEAKER 05 :
That’s funny. And it was something I’d never seen before. I think it replaced a camper special. It had a kit on it, probably aftermarket, called a Ready Camp.
SPEAKER 08 :
I’m not familiar with that.
SPEAKER 05 :
Body clap molding. Looked kind of like the Lund of heavy-duty fiberglass running boards. Oh, gotcha.
SPEAKER 08 :
Okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER 05 :
Wood interior, a little bit better suspension. Curious that it only had the 4.6 in it. But I prefer that engine over the 5.4 I had in my 03 F-150. Sure. But at any rate, so I pick it up from my grandson, go through it. He drives it up to Idaho, where they live, drives it for a couple weeks, then all of a sudden a no-start. And my daughter’s pretty handy around cars. She grew up a lot like I did, except just in my puppy shop. So she’s trying to hold it to the floor, which had worked for me when I first got it over here to buy it. And it’s got a fuel pump. You can hear the fuel pumps running. I haven’t had them checked for a spark yet. But they also tried to pull the codes on it with both an old vintage code reader from the 1997, barely OBD2, And with a more modern one that’s a German manufacturer, I forget which one, that actually has some programming capability. And in both cases, this can’t communicate with the onboard computer. Does that mean… I asked them last time to check the fuse on the ECM.

Right.
SPEAKER 05 :
Or whatever Ford calls it. Number 30?
SPEAKER 06 :
Yep. Goes to the powertrain control module.
SPEAKER 05 :
PCM, they call it. Okay. Yep. If that’s not blown, is it necessarily replace the PCM and can a guy even get one?
SPEAKER 10 :
I would say it’s not going to be real easy to find. It’s not going to be local. You’ll probably have to get the number off that one. But if that is it, I almost wouldn’t think it would be causing a no start, but. Usually it causes other problems, but – They were fairly common for losing the PCMs.
SPEAKER 06 :
They can also be shipped off to Washington or a couple places and be repaired over a couple of weeks. Yeah. But, yeah, there’s got to be power – Power to the ECM to – And it is the, and that’s got to come from the computer or fuses to it.
SPEAKER 10 :
Right. And then there’s a separate fuse for the data link connector. That’s usually linked with your accessory or your, uh, sure.
SPEAKER 06 :
They both. Yeah. There’s two fuses. Yeah.
SPEAKER 10 :
So, so one power is the other one power. There’s two different power sources. Anyway, if the fuse goes like in your cigarette lighter, that can make the data link not work. So you can’t, you won’t have communication there. Um, but yeah of course the computer fuse blows but yeah just hard to say what you might be fighting there but if you but if you have well if you have fuel pump so at least part of the computer is working so because that’s right it’s grounding that’s true so uh so yeah i would definitely check that datalink fuse or check all the fuses i mean that’s
SPEAKER 05 :
typical issue there if they plugged in their cell phone charger right that’s the fuses under the dash and the ones under the hood right exactly and um but yeah definitely well that that kind of tracks that kind of tracks because this the gentleman i bought it from 72 years old but born and raised in california and he’s got a stereo in that thing that any kid would be proud of okay okay so he could have tapped into the yeah the same circuit yeah right Yeah, big box, turn the key on, you hear the big speaker stomp. Does the radio work currently? Is the radio turning on? I haven’t asked them that question. Okay. The other thing that was kind of confounding me, too, it’s got one of the old Viper alarm systems in it.
SPEAKER 10 :
Oh, disconnect that. Throw that away, and it’ll start right up, and you’ll drive out of there. Every time. Every time. That’s the first thing.
SPEAKER 05 :
You know, if I could have found the thing where they mounted it underneath the dash… If I could have found it, I would have done that viperectomy when I had it. Yeah, right.
SPEAKER 10 :
Viperectomy is a good way to say it. Yeah, I mean, yeah, 99% of the time if it’s towed in and it’s got some aftermarket alarm system on there, that comes off and you drive away. Yeah, you have to disable it, bypass it first. Yeah, and usually you can just pull the fuses. It depends on how integrated they are in the system. Right. You can usually pull the fuses, and then that disables the system. The inline fuses to the Viper. Yeah.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah, and that would work. If it’s got disabling feature, that would work on the ignition side rather than the fuel side. Correct, yeah.
SPEAKER 07 :

We are back that time of the week where we throw a car review in, sort of do a drive radio slash Rush to Reason segment. We’ll play this again on Saturday as well. Richard, what have you driven lately?
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah, Dan, so one of my more favorite cars of the year, and I’m currently kind of finishing it off right now, and that is a 2025 Toyota Corolla. But this is the GR Corolla, which basically, outside of the name Corolla, this is nothing that you would expect of a Corolla. And I mean that in a good way. This is a hot hatch, Dan, right? And for folks that don’t know, there’s a segment of sedans out there that are, you know, Hatch, right, you know, kind of hatchback cars. And they’re hot hatches because they put some extra horsepower and stuff underneath the hood, and they make it a really fun drive. And, Dad, with this vehicle, they have done just that. And to amplify it, it’s got a six-speed manual transmission, which makes it that much more fun, and you can’t hardly find it. anymore in today’s world and you and i have talked about that many times i know i know some of your some of the cars you’ve even looked at you haven’t bought because you can’t find right that manual piece of it but again this is a premium plus model it’s got a 1.6 liter three cylinder turbo underneath the hood that’s 300 horsepower 295 pounds feet of torque i mentioned the manual transmission also dad This is, which makes sense, four-wheel drive here in Colorado. And obviously, that’s for performance, right? You know, for gravel roads, dirt, whatever it might be. But here in Colorado, for a snow dad, it’s something you can, again, not the tires that are on this thing right now, but you get some good snow tires on it, you could absolutely drive this vehicle around. The nice thing about this dad, I will say, is it’s not so overpowering that you feel like you can’t ever drive. you know, get on the gas without doing it. You really, this car loves to live in second and third gear in those higher RPMs, right? That’s where this thing thrives and it does a great job at it. Is it the biggest car? No. You’ve got to put the first two rows up, or I should say the front row up a little bit more for the for the kids in the second row it’s got some strut supports in the back um you know in the hatch portion of it decent storage nothing crazy it’s got a fun functional hood that’s got some air vents on the front of it which works great um and so for folks if you’re curious you’re like richard what car are you talking about look it up and see because the pictures on this car are really phenomenal Yeah, fuel economy, Dan, 21 and 28 for an average of 24. Price on this is $48,323 as listed, but you can get the core version of this car for just over $40,000. I would say maybe the only couple negatives I have, Dad, are small fuel tank, which is to be expected, right, on a vehicle like this. You’re not expecting a big fuel tank. I just know that I’m able to basically get about 200 to 250 miles on a full tank of fuel. So just take that for what it’s worth. The other thing, and some complaints, but again, for the price points, and some of you are going to maybe disagree with me here, It’s a little noisy on the interior, Dad, especially at highway speeds. Is that something that would prevent me from buying this car? No, I just want you to know what you’re getting into because to me, that’s something that is, again, just I want to know, right? Especially if I’m going to spend almost $50,000 on a car. Outside of that, Dad, it is one of my more favorite cars that we’ve driven this year, and I did not expect that. Honestly, I had no idea what to expect when I got this vehicle, and I got into it, and I have just had an absolute blast. And obviously, you’re seeing pictures of it. Kind of first impressions, kind of a pretty attractive car.
SPEAKER 07 :
It’s sort of, and correct me if I’m wrong, but it’s sort of the answer to a Subaru STI. Am I thinking correctly, WRX STI?
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah, this is definitely in that same realm. I know your Volkswagens had their Golf, right? Their Golf R in a lot of ways. And yes, again, this segment’s getting a little bit more busy in a lot of ways. I think this is a really good entrance into the market for Toyota because it just it works well. The 300 horsepower is not so crazy. It’s got a three tip exhaust on it, which is a fun little thing, kind of attractive. Honestly, the car itself is really attractive car and really something that I would encourage folks to get out. And if you’re just looking kind of for a fun car to tool around in that, just have a hard time kind of finding something else that you can compete with.
SPEAKER 07 :
No, and again, folks, looking at the car, if you’re into that sort of – well, let me just say it this way, Richard. If somebody’s looking for an entry-level sports car that you can still drive on an everyday basis, it’s probably not going to be the family truckster. It’s most likely going to be a single- or a two-person-type vehicle, plenty of room in the back for storage and all of that. But the reality is if you want a really fun performance car – Can’t really maybe afford to step up into, you know, the real, you know, solid, you know, sports cars like, you know, we’ve talked about in the past and even driven some of those. But to have that ability to buy that car for under 40 grand when most everything else is going to be a minimum 20K higher, that’s why they’ll sell them.
SPEAKER 12 :
Well, and again, this segment, this hot hatch segment continues to do well and continues to succeed. And I would absolutely, and again, I keep going back to this. For our Altitude dad, and you mentioned kind of Subaru, that’s why they’ve done so well, right? Because they do have the all-wheel drive system. That’s something out here that does matter, right? It’s not a front-wheel drive vehicle. And this is something that you could drive up to the mountains. You could drive over the passes, right? Now, are you going to go through eight inches of snow in this thing? Probably not. You’re going to be a snowplow at that point in time. But is it something, like you said, where you could do a car like this and have some fun with it? And between $40,000 to $50,000, depending on how you… And like I said, the one that we drove is the Premium Plus, Dad. It is kind of the creme de la creme of this model. You’ve got a forged carbon fiber roof. There’s all sorts of stuff on here. Do you necessarily need all that? Maybe or maybe not so, folks. So just know when we’re talking about this, we’re not necessarily saying you have to do the very top of the line. But absolutely, Dad, like you said, for the value, this is a really competitive car, in my opinion. I love the way it looks. I love the way it drives. It was really, really a fun car to drive. to handle for a week and honestly got a lot of good compliments about it. Just not as loyal as I used to be, meaning. i again i don’t have any biases when we do the reviews we’re just looking at the car for what it is and we tell everybody all the time is go out and drive a car first before you actually buy it and do more than just the five minute round the block test drive sure go try to get in the car even if you can’t drive it for a long distance sit in it for a little while you know put your family in it if you’ve got more than just you driving it uh make sure you can get the luggage that you’re thinking about you know you you know whatever you’re doing camping load up all stuff as you would use it on a daily basis yeah whatever you’re going to be doing make sure that everything fits accordingly because that’s why you’re buying the car and if that car doesn’t work then look at one that does because every one of them has a little bit different you know idiosyncrasies to the car and you know you may be brand specific but you know you know expand your horizons a little bit and look at some others just because you’re brand specific that particular brand may not have a car that really does meet exactly what you want okay go look at some of the others

Yeah, sure.

That’s how I do it.
SPEAKER 10 :
Well, and just how they configure things. They all do the same thing. They get you there and back, but is it comfortable? Thank you. Some are more comfortable.

No, what you just said, Kent, for some people, even just the seat and the lumbar and the headroom, and how does it feel from the distance to the steering wheel, and does it adjust correctly, and, and, and we go.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah, and you don’t get that in five minutes, right? you know no you do not yeah so you have to drive it and yeah because some some vehicles I test drive you know I notice that it’s like okay well that steering wheel is really close but my feet are extended all the way out you know it’s and you know just things that Maybe the turn signal doesn’t – it just doesn’t feel right, you know, but maybe it’s just I’m not used to it. But there again, is it something you can get used to?
SPEAKER 07 :
Correct. Yeah. So, again, those are things where, you know, we get the question a lot. You know, what do I go by? And I’ll even get that from, you know, individuals, people that know me or whatever. And literally it’s – I honestly come back and say it depends, right?
SPEAKER 10 :
I can tell you probably what not to look at, but there’s 50 other choices.
SPEAKER 07 :
The plethora of what to look at is a long list. Really, it does come down to you, your driving style, what do you like? Do you need all-wheel drive, front-wheel drive? Do you need a truck? Do you not need a truck? Do you need a three-quarter ton truck instead of a half ton? I mean, we keep rolling along, and I get listeners all the time that you guys will actually ask me some of those questions via email or the text line, and it really gets tough because I’m not you. What fits me and what I like, you may not. And what your body type is may not be mine. And on down the line we go. That’s why there’s so many different makes and models because, no, they’re not all equal. Do you like to slide into a car? Do you like to sit down in a car? Do you like to be, yeah. Do you like a firm seat? Do you like a soft seat? Right. Do you want to sit up high? Or a low back? What do you want to do with the head? I mean, you know, I think I… Been talking to you about, I wanted to get a little extra car for my ex-wife for a grocery getter. Loves manual transmissions for most of her years. She’s 70.

Gotcha.

Drove manual transmissions, not only cars, but motorcycles. So after scrutinizing the internet, I found a 2021, which was the last year of production, for a Kia… uh soul with a six-speed manual they don’t make them anymore with a six manual and uh 55 000 miles had it uh inspected 100 uh inspected nothing wrong with this car picked it up for 11k no wrong with that it’s hard to find a car for around 10k so that you did well Oh, yeah. I mean, it’s low mileage. Nothing wrong with it. It needs nothing.
SPEAKER 07 :
Nice.
SPEAKER 04 :
And, you know, when I heard $40,000, well, no.
SPEAKER 07 :
Well, and that particular car is their premium, you know, high-performance version of that car. You can buy that car in the non-high-performance version for low 20s.
SPEAKER 04 :
Oh, the Toyota?
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER 04 :
Oh, okay, they didn’t mention that.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, that’s their kind of quote-unquote, I don’t want to say race model, but it’s their high-end sport model for that kind of money. I mean, it’s trying to compete with WRXs and some of that kind of stuff is what they’re doing. But, yeah, that car just in its regular general format is in the low 20s.
SPEAKER 04 :
Oh, okay, I see that. But, you know, if you shop around in the used market near, I mean, the amount of information available is, you know,
SPEAKER 07 :
Oh, there’s a plethora of, yeah.
SPEAKER 04 :
You know, so I scoured the, I found this car, and, John, nothing wrong with it. That’s good. Absolutely nothing wrong with this car.
SPEAKER 10 :
That’s good. Still pretty low miles, so that’s good.
SPEAKER 04 :
They don’t make them anymore, the 2025 models of last year, but they got a boatload of space in them. Yeah, they do. Passenger space.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, I test drove some of those back in the day, and, yeah, they sure do.
SPEAKER 04 :
And the luggage in the back, you can put three dead bodies in two sets of golf clubs.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, absolutely.

Yeah.

You know, encourage your listeners, if they need a six-speed manual, search it out. You can find them.

Good morning, gentlemen.

Hey, Mark, how are you?
SPEAKER 11 :
I’m doing okay. Good. So 2004 Volvo convertible is done. Everything’s fixed except for one problem. Okay. I have an intermittent starting problem. I’ve taken it to the repair shop. Of course, it doesn’t happen there.
SPEAKER 07 :
Of course.
SPEAKER 11 :
Of course not. So we can’t do that. Well, I was at the car wash yesterday. It took me about 10 minutes to get started. Not putting my foot on the gas. Just keep cranking it periodically. And then it fired up again. This morning I fired it up. It’s fired up again. So I don’t mind throwing more money at this thing. My suspicion, because it cranks over very strongly and I have it on a battery tender, is the fuel pump relay.
SPEAKER 08 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 11 :
So it’s intermittent though.
SPEAKER 07 :
Hmm. Interesting.
SPEAKER 06 :
So for the price of a relay, you could throw one in there and see if it fixes it. But otherwise, it’s got to be tested while it’s acting up in that short amount of time when it won’t start.
SPEAKER 11 :
That’s what I suspected I was going to do anyway. That’s a two and a half liter, five cylinder turbo. And it cranks over very strongly. Not a problem. Runs fine. Not a problem. But it’s intermittent. So I guess the thing is, I thought about the same thing. Just do it and don’t worry about the cost. It can’t be that much money.
SPEAKER 07 :
And on the Volvo, I have no clue. That’s what I can’t tell you. You know more on that one than I do. Relays are usually very inexpensive. Yeah, typically.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 07 :
And especially the age of that car should be.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah. So if it’s not the relay, it’s possibly the fuel pump in the tank.
SPEAKER 07 :
Possible. Yeah, it’s a fuel issue.
SPEAKER 06 :
But, yeah, you don’t know if you’re losing fuel or spark at this point, right?
SPEAKER 11 :
I don’t think it’s spark because it’s got a good, strong crank to it.
SPEAKER 06 :
Wow. Doesn’t mean anything. Yeah, no.
SPEAKER 07 :
That means the starter and the battery are good. Yeah, doesn’t mean the spark plugs are firing.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 07 :
They all have the same symptom.
SPEAKER 11 :
So the spark plug you’re saying because the battery is good, which is new, and it’s not a battery tender.
SPEAKER 07 :
Right, and the spark has nothing to do with that. No.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 07 :
Independent from each other.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 07 :
You know, for example, just because a car has a good crank, if it doesn’t have fuel and spark, of course, it’s not going to fire. In a lot of the newer cars, this is where it gets confusing to even sometimes technicians, they can sometimes act exactly the same. In other words, back in the old days, you pretty much knew, was this car not getting any fuel, or was it a spark issue back when carburetors were a big thing and so on? It really wasn’t that hard to tell. Nowadays… If injectors aren’t firing, it’ll darn near seem like it’s not firing a spark plug. On the same token, if they’re firing but the spark plugs aren’t, it’ll feel exactly the same way. The point is it’s really hard to tell. Without doing a little bit of procedural things on the car, it’s hard to tell if it’s spark or a fuel problem, an injector problem, I’m trying to say.
SPEAKER 11 :
My takeaway on this is two things. One, replace the fuel pump relay. Secondly, check injectors, plugs. And that would be the next diagnosis. And don’t wait for it to happen. Just tell them to do it.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, I mean, the relay is easy. I think I would do that no matter what just because of, you know, for those of you listening, you know, we know Mark’s car. You brought this car up from, I believe it was Florida, Mark. And so, you know, it’s been through a few things here, and you’re going through the rebuild process. But I think just knowing the car and where it’s at, I’d put a relay in it no matter what and just see what happens. If it continues, then you’ve got to delve into it a little further.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah, but checking those things while they’re working doesn’t do any good, unfortunately.
SPEAKER 07 :
No, it’s hard.
SPEAKER 10 :
Don’t do a thing. Yeah.
SPEAKER 11 :
John, this car doesn’t even look close to what I got. It doesn’t even look close.
SPEAKER 07 :
I’m sure. Oh, I know you, Mark. I can only imagine. Yeah. I know you all too well.
SPEAKER 11 :
Showroom jewelry is what it looks like now.
SPEAKER 07 :
I’ll bet. I can imagine.
SPEAKER 11 :
So, at any rate, I know you guys don’t know much about Volvos, but what you do know about is the practicality of systems.
SPEAKER 07 :
Well, yeah, I mean, in that case, yeah, thank you, because really, at the end of the day, that doesn’t make any difference what car we’re working on. Every engine, because it’s basically a big air pump, and it requires fuel and spark to ignite to make things happen.
SPEAKER 10 :
Fuel, spark, and compression. And the right timing.
SPEAKER 07 :
That’s the other thing. It has to be the right timing. And again, in your case, it’s running at times. It just doesn’t want to start at certain times, which at that point, it’s, you know, again, relay’s easy for the fuel pump because it could be the fuel pump’s not kicking on. And again, we have devices or shops do have devices when it’s in that mode to actually look and see, do we have a spark problem or a fuel problem? But until it does that, that’s difficult.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah. Okay. That’s all I needed.
SPEAKER 07 :
But you’re on the right track. I mean, the other thing you could do, Mark, when it decides to not start one day, if it’s easy to access a plug wire, just pull a plug wire back, have somebody crank it over and see if there’s any spark coming out of the end of the wire. If there is, it’s not a spark issue. We have a fuel issue.
SPEAKER 10 :
Right.
SPEAKER 06 :
Have you tried stepping on the gas while you start it when it wouldn’t start? Good one, Mark.
SPEAKER 11 :
Makes it worse. Makes it worse.
SPEAKER 06 :
Okay. There is some idle air control issues on these. I’m just looking online and adding a little gas changes it.
SPEAKER 07 :
So it makes it worse, meaning we’re probably in the fuel end of things then. Yeah.
SPEAKER 1 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, maybe it was.
SPEAKER 11 :
I just kept my foot off and, you know, cranked.
SPEAKER 07 :
Then I would guess we don’t have a spark issue. We have either a relay or the pump. Yeah. Or both, maybe, down the road. It depends what the relay does.
SPEAKER 10 :
I mean, it came from Florida, so the relays are going to have more ozone buildup on them and stuff. So it would be more apt to be that.
SPEAKER 07 :
And it sat for a while, too, didn’t it, Mark?
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, it sat for a number of years. That’s what I thought. Yeah.
SPEAKER 07 :
I mean, again, I’d put a reel in it just because that’s easy and simple. Just throw one in it first and see what happens. If it continues, you know, again, age of the vehicle, I’d probably put a pump in it.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah. Couldn’t hurt.
SPEAKER 07 :
No, not going to bother at all.
SPEAKER 10 :
It’s going to make it extend out that much longer. Yeah.
SPEAKER 11 :

You’re welcome, Mark. Appreciate you, as always. One thing you might want to try, too, if it doesn’t start, if it’s going through that same deal, two people, if you can get underneath with a hammer and have somebody cranking on it while you tap on the fuel tank.

If it fires up then, we’re on the right track.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah, exactly. And maybe you can only access from the top or something, but in the backseat or whatever.

Bang on the tank, basically.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah, basically bang on the tank. And if that makes it start, then… That’s the fuel pump.
SPEAKER 07 :
A lot of times, Mark, just like the old days when a starter wouldn’t engage, you’d tap on the starter and it would. We’re doing the same thing with the fuel pump.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah, same thing. It’s electric motor.
SPEAKER 07 :
It’s just not turning. That’s right. Brushes aren’t making contact, so off we go.
SPEAKER 11 :
Solved that problem with the 66 Suburban. Not a problem.
SPEAKER 07 :
There you go. Same thing. There you go. Exactly.
SPEAKER 11 :
So where do you bang on? I got access to the gas tank in the back. Where do you hit it?
SPEAKER 07 :
Anywhere.
SPEAKER 11 :
Anywhere?
SPEAKER 07 :
Anywhere that we can get some shake in it.
SPEAKER 10 :
In the middle near the pump as much as you can. Just don’t tap on it hard because it’s probably plastic. Yeah, exactly. Use a plastic hammer if you can. Dead blow or something like that if you have it. Yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER 11 :
Yeah, no, I’ve got a plastic hammer and a dead slow hammer.
SPEAKER 10 :
Perfect. You’ll be fine. That’s all you need. Yeah, you don’t have to hit it hard. It just needs a little vibration if that is it. If that doesn’t make any difference, then likely it’s not the fuel pump.
SPEAKER 07 :
Can’t tell you how many cars over the years you went in the parking lot, crawled underneath it, banged on it, and pulled it in the bay so you didn’t have to tow it in.
SPEAKER 10 :
Right, exactly.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yep, and you already know it’s a fuel pump.
SPEAKER 10 :
And you knew it was a fuel pump. Yep, exactly.
SPEAKER 11 :
Well, then if it bangs on and doesn’t make any difference, then it could be the relay.
SPEAKER 10 :
Could be. Yeah, and I’d replace the relay first. No matter what. Do that first. That’s right. No matter what. Do that anyway, and then, yeah.
SPEAKER 11 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 07 :

And for those of you listening, the reason I said I can only imagine what the car looks like now is because Mark’s really particular like I am. Well, I remember him being on the show once, and he called up, and he was looking for something specific that came with the car that wasn’t with it, the spare tire thing or a booklet or something that he was having a hard time finding.
