SPEAKER 03 :
Being an expert on general automotive knowledge, what would the correct ignition timing be on a 1955 Bel Air Chevrolet with a 327 cubic inch engine and a four barrel carburetor?
SPEAKER 19 :
It is a trick question. Watch this. Because Chevy didn’t make a 327 in 55. The 327 didn’t come out until 62. And it wasn’t offered in the Bel Air with a four-barrel carb until 64. However, in 1964, the correct ignition timing would be four degrees before top dead center.
SPEAKER 15 :
Get ready for another hour of Drive Radio brought to you by Colorado Select Auto Care Centers. Got a question for the experts? Then give them a call. 303-477-5600. Now it’s time to pop the hood and get our hands dirty. Drive Radio on KLZ 560 The Source.
SPEAKER 08 :
All right, we are back. Hour number two, Drive Radio, KLZ 560. Myself, Steve Horvath from Geno’s Auto Service with me today. Of course, Larry Unger answering phones for us. Charlie Grimes, our engineer. And if you’ve got any questions at all, we have lines open 303-477-5600. 303-477-5600. And our question of the day was, give us the type of car that when you look at it, you immediately think, Now, I know it’s not always the case because some people don’t always fit the quote-unquote stereotype of said car, but there are just certain vehicles where you look at it and it’s like, yeah, okay, I can kind of tell what driver that’s going to be. So let me give you another example, and it’s well-known. Most, not all, but most Corvette owners… Our old guy wearing New Balance tennis shoes. In fact, you see lots of jokes out there about that’s the uniform of choice for Corvette owners. And despite the fact that they’re, in a lot of cases, very powerful, fast, quick, all of that, rarely do they get driven that way. because of the individual that owns said car. Occasionally, you’ll find a one-off where it’s somebody different that owns that car. But that’s a car where, even though it’s a fast, powerful, can pretty much hold its own with any other vehicles that are out there, you will find most of the drivers are not, as opposed to, go find Camaro drivers, right? And they will be driving way different than the Corvette drivers will, even though the Corvette, for most purposes, not all, but in most models, is faster than the Camaro. So there’s a good example of how, even though the car itself is made in such a way that it could very well be driven much differently than it is, is not because of the type of owners that actually own it. Does that make sense, Steve?
SPEAKER 07 :
My daughter was mentioning this the other day. She said the same thing. She says, why do all the people who are driving a nice, cool car are old and bald and gray-haired? Because that’s the only time you can afford it. It’s exactly right. I mean, seriously. You’ve got to save your whole life for it.
SPEAKER 08 :
I mean, because most people, you know, they get to that stage. You know, you’re raising kids. You’re in that, you know, I call it the high burn rate. So, you know, you’ve got all this money that’s going out the door because you’re paying for this and paying for that. And kids are in school and they need clothes and shoes and this and that and whatever. The food bill is bigger and on and on and on you go. So you’ve got all this stuff going on. The burn rate is high. And, you know, at that point, you can’t, you know, even if you wanted to and you don’t have the garage space, even you just you don’t have the setup even to really own that car for all the reasons I just mentioned. So then when all the kids start leaving and they get off and they get married and they’re kind of on their own. Yeah, you can now afford to do a few things because in a lot of cases, your income even has probably gone up some in that amount of time, depending upon your career. And you’ve got your debt typically is way down at that point in time as well. So you’re at a point where, yeah, you can go buy that type of car and a lot of folk. And by the way, I’m glad they do. Good for them. They’ve earned it. Go for it. No, they should. They should. But you’re probably going to be in your 50s or older by the time you start being able to afford those things that you couldn’t do when you were in. On top of that, just the upkeep and the care and the insurance and everything else, most folk in their 20s couldn’t afford to do that. Some can, and you will see some younger guys, single guys, they haven’t gotten married yet, whatever, maybe they can afford it. But your daughter is right. Typically speaking, that’s not the case. Mm-hmm. so that’s an example of a stereotype where that particular driver is typically going to be very cautious there’s believe it or not even though they’re in a car where they can do jackrabbit starts they probably aren’t they’re going to give themselves plenty of room in the car you know to the car in front of them the car around them you rarely see that car in rush hour traffic because it’s something that they want to make sure they don’t get beat up for whatever reason rainy day and on and on we go so you There are, I think in some cases, and this is the great thing about America, there are some stereotypes with cars because we do have freedom to buy whatever we want to. And yes, certain personality types buy certain cars. It’s just the way it is. And sometimes you buy that car based upon what’s going on in your own family and so on. But, yeah, we have the freedom to buy whatever car we want, and some people gravitate to certain types of cars over others. Very well known.
SPEAKER 07 :
Do you think, like, Corvette and manufacturers will then advertise more to that person? Oh, they do. Do they? Yeah. I’m just curious. Absolutely, they do. You know, somebody who is pretty well off in their 20s or 30s, they might be looking for more of a Ferrari, more of a Porsche than they would be a Corvette. You know, and I think some of that’s generational.
SPEAKER 08 :
Some of it might be, although some of it, and this is the truth, and some of you that have owned some of those other cars know exactly what I mean. Some of it comes down to the value, the price. You can still, in a lot of cases, especially if you buy a used one, you can get into a fairly high-performance Corvette. for a lot less money than what you can go and buy a 911 or any of the other types of cars that, frankly, the Corvette will compete with on a performance level. No, I get finish and all of that. No, they’re not one and the same. And anybody that thinks their Corvette is a 911, they’re not. And I’ve owned these, so I can vouch for that. They’re not one and the same. But am I downing, you know, am I ditzing a Corvette? No, I own one. I mean, I’m not ditzing that car at all. For its value, it’s a very good car as far as all of that goes. And that’s why a lot of folk will go and buy a Corvette because you can afford it over, you know, a 911 or something along those lines. And for most people, they’re thinking, well, how can they be that much difference in price? Folks, there is. You can buy even brand new. You can go buy a C8 Corvette. fairly loaded, and buy that car in the, gosh, 70, 75K range, depending upon how you equip it. Yeah, they can go as much as 100 plus, but depending on how you equip it, you can buy that car all day long for, you know, 75, 80 grand. A 911 of its counterpart will be starting at 150. And up. And if you go all the way up to a high-end, you know, GT car on the Porsche side, you’re in the 300K range now. You’re 250 to 300. So you are a lot less money. You can go out and buy a full-bore Z06 for half the price of a Porsche GT.
SPEAKER 07 :
But different manufacturers, I mean… You know, is most of the Porsche more of a hand-built, more craftsman put into it? And still not an assembly line like the Corvette.
SPEAKER 08 :
And carries the Porsche name and so on and so forth. So, yes, there’s all of those factors that roll into it as well. And I will say this. You can go buy the Porsche and not lose near as much money on it percentage-wise as what you will on the Corvette. So is the Porsche a better, quote-unquote, investment? No. Yeah, if that’s how you’re looking at it and that’s what you’re trying to do. But, again, for a lot of people, the cost of entry, they can’t do the Porsche end of things. They just can’t go that high end. So they’re going to go buy a Corvette. And in a lot of cases, they can go buy – I mean, in this day and age, you can buy a really nice used Corvette and have a lot of fun with it and find a car in the $25,000 to $30,000 range all day long and have a car that you can go out and spend a lot of time in and have a lot of fun in. and have a relatively inexpensive sports car to drive for that price.
SPEAKER 07 :
True. Only if you get double, then you’re really worrying about where you’re parking, and you’re really worrying about driving in Wednesday evening.
SPEAKER 08 :
Well, you don’t, and I have some of those types of cars. It’s that type of a car. You just don’t drive it. What do you call it?
SPEAKER 07 :
Showroom queen?
SPEAKER 08 :
They’re like a show car, a show queen.
SPEAKER 07 :
Show queen or something. Pavement queen, whatever.
SPEAKER 08 :
Pavement princess, my kids call it. You drive that type of car because you don’t want to park anywhere. You can’t park anywhere. You’re only going to drive certain places and so on.
SPEAKER 07 :
And in that aspect, it’s just for owning it. Like you say, it’s more an investment than a driving.
SPEAKER 08 :
Right, right. Somebody asked a question, too, by the way. Subaru emphasis on the WRX, by the way. Yes, I think you’re right on that one. That was one of the cars I was going to mention. You can typically look at a WRX and know that person’s driving a little faster than what some of its counterparts are. So, yeah, that’s a great one, by the way. But the question is, have a 2017 Prius. Didn’t realize that there’s a lot of later model cars that have no spare. Very true, by the way. In fact, I talked about that on some previous shows in the past. So you want just a cheap spare, or what I want is a cheap compressor. Is there any way to get a real spare donut in the car? No, you’re not going to find any kind of a… spare that works if you wanted to do anything to actually have something to get you to where you need to go buy one of the cheaper compressors you can actually buy and I don’t recommend it but in a pinch could you get by with it sure so do one of two things you can buy a tire plug kit Amazon’s got them all day long where if you noticed you had a nail, you could plug that. Even if it’s on the corner and it’s in a sidewall or whatever, you could still plug it, put some air in it, and get to where you need to go. That would not be a problem. And depending upon where that’s at, you may want to fix it properly or you may want to replace the tire. It just depends. But at least it would get you to where you want to go. I am not a fan of filling the tire up with the slime stuff that’s a tire seal because – It ruins the wheel and other things, and it just doesn’t work well when it’s all said and done. You typically end up with more problems than it’s worth. So if you wanted to do a tire plug kit, keep it in the car, and they make them in a nice little handy pouch. It’s simple to have with you. And one of the portable air compressors that we were talking about earlier in the 10 o’clock hour, sure, you could easily get by with that, and that would be a good fix for that. Joe and Parker, tell you what, hang tight. Looks like you’ve got a good question for us. We’ll be back in a moment, give you plenty of time. That way we’ll take our first break of this hour. This is Drive Radio, KLZ 560.
SPEAKER 01 :
Air conditioning season is starting in Colorado. Are you ready? Take advantage of Geno’s Auto’s air conditioning recharge special. Is your vehicle’s air conditioning ready to keep you cool on hot Colorado days? We all know how fast Colorado can heat up. The refrigerant in your air conditioning system gets contaminants, evaporates, and breaks down over time. That refrigerant needs to be able to absorb heat to be able to cool your vehicle’s interior. Geno’s uses a cooling machine that takes out the old refrigerant and cleans it. Then they put the clean refrigerant back, topping off with Freon at the right level. To make your life simpler, Geno’s offers loaner vehicles so you can drop your car off and pick up when ready. We back up our work with Napa’s nationwide 36-month, 36,000-mile warranty. Stay cool this summer by making sure your system is up to date and ready for this year’s summer heat. Give us a call or go online to schedule an appointment. We’re AAA approved and located at Bowles and Platt Canyon. Stop in or visit us online at genosautoservice.com.

Here’s why you need personal injury attorney Kevin Flesch on your side. He understands the way the jury thinks. In the context of a personal injury case, you’ve been hurt by someone else’s negligence. The idea is that you’re going to try to recover so that you can get back to where you were just prior to that incident occurring. What that really means from a jurist’s perspective is that you’re going to be asking them to award you money. So when we talk about fairness, we’re talking about six people that you don’t know. Those six people view the evidence and make a unanimous decision that will decide what the fair value is. When you’re the one who’s hurt, you have a good idea of what you think it’s worth. The question is, can you persuade those other individuals whom you don’t know and were witnesses to believe that’s what the case is worth? Kevin Flesch understands the way the jury thinks. SPEAKER 08 :
And we are back. Drive Radio, KLZ 560. Joe, go ahead, sir.
SPEAKER 09 :
Well, I’m looking for a mobile mechanic that can come up and look at a car and re-diagnose it. I just have a question whether the diagnosis was good. I was told that it would cost too much to fix. It’s high miles. It’s a little Honda. 2010 CRV. It’s got a lot of miles.
SPEAKER 08 :
And what’s the initial diagnosis on it been, Joe?
SPEAKER 09 :
That a valve spring broke and dropped a valve into the cylinder. Gotcha. But when this happened, I was driving it. And the engine just kept running. It just wouldn’t rev up over 6,000 RPM, or 600 RPM. I’m sorry, 600. So I just quit. The car was running, and then all of a sudden it just kind of slowed down, slowed down to no power. And it was running, and it was going. And that was it. I thought it was a catalytic converter maybe that I’d been pushing and hadn’t, you know.
SPEAKER 08 :
You already diagnosed. What you just gave me as a sound, you verified the diagnosis. You don’t need anybody else to give you a second opinion. You just verified it.
SPEAKER 09 :
Okay. So I took it, had it towed into this place here in Parker. And they finally got to it. And the diagnosis came back. And they denied that, and they said it was a valve spring broke, and the valve dropped in there. But the guy, the service manager, said he had actually driven the car up into the garage, and it wouldn’t go over 600 RPM, but it had enough power to move it. I don’t know. So anyway, I went to… Paid the bill, paid the diagnosis fee. What they told me was that it’s going to cost, engine’s going to cost like $10,000. It was one figure just to put a new motor or rebuilt motor in there. And the car was not worth fixing as old as it was.
SPEAKER 08 :
Well, that’s a different discussion that we’ll get into here in a moment. But so far, I will tell you, Joe, everything they have said so far, the description that you gave me of even the sound the car was making won’t go over 600 RPM. I would tell you that I wouldn’t pay for a second diagnosis because you’re going to find it’s exactly the same because their diagnosis, I guarantee you, is right on.
SPEAKER 09 :
The valve dropped into the cylinder.
SPEAKER 08 :
When you described the sound that it made when it started doing that and the fact it won’t go over 600 RPM, for me anyways, you’ve verified the diagnosis. Yes.
SPEAKER 09 :
Really? Yes. Wow. There was no clanking or anything, you know? No, sometimes it was just, I mean, it goes fast.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, mechanical things can just, yeah, it just happens. I mean, I can’t tell you why at just that moment in time that happens, and there you are. And I’ll also tell you, Joe, that they’re probably, I mean, I’d have to put a pencil to it and get an exact figure, but their 10K figure is probably not far off and might even be a tad low. You’re kidding. I am not.
SPEAKER 09 :
I thought maybe $5,000. Not anymore.
SPEAKER 08 :
It was $5,000 20 years ago, and I’m not exaggerating. Oh, my gosh. It’s come up. I’m not joking. I sold my shops in 2012. Steve still owns them, and all of our other shops do. But I sold my shops in 2012. And in 2012, you were hard-pressed to get an engine done for $5,000. OK, so it has come up dramatically since then. And I was talking to one of my clients about this that I coached yesterday. Joe, you know, doing an engine on a vehicle is anymore anywhere from minimum minimum. It’s hard to even get it done for seventy five hundred bucks. That’s the bottom end. And I’m not exaggerating. You get up into some of the diesels and stuff, Joe. It can be twenty five, thirty thousand dollars.
SPEAKER 09 :
Good, great.
SPEAKER 08 :
So, no, really quick, on your car, this is what you have to do the math on, is on any type of an older car, and this applies to everybody listening, if you’ve got a major repair, first things first, A, what’s that total cost? B, how good is the rest of the car, meaning interior, transmission, all of the rest of it, how good is the rest of the car, meaning if I put $10,000 into it, how long would I need to keep it and keep driving it to get my $10,000 back? Because, yes, it’s not going to be worth what the car is worth to put an engine in it. But to replace that car is at least $15,000 because you don’t buy much of a used car for under that, Joe. So now you start looking at, okay, if I had to go replace the car, it’s X versus fixing my car is X. Which way at the end of the day is better for me?
SPEAKER 09 :
Well, that’s basically what I ended up doing. But the car is sitting there. It looks good and all this and that. So the next thing is I’ve got to figure out what can I get for it. Okay, so here’s your next thing.
SPEAKER 08 :
Call Hands of the Carpenter. It’s a great organization that we’re affiliated with. They help. Single moms, and they vet them. They teach them how to take care of the vehicle, make sure they’ve got insurance money, the whole nine yards. They help them budgetarily speaking. There’s a place in Aurora here. They’ve got a location in Aurora. They’ll tow the car, take care of it for you, give you a donation letter, the whole nine yards. And that would be your best bet when it’s all said and done. So, A, you’re not only helping somebody else out because they’ll fix the car, give it off to one of their, you know, people they have that’s in need that they’ve got a list of, you get a nice donation out of it, and they handle the rest.
SPEAKER 09 :
Okay. Okay. Well, you’ve put my mind at rest, I guess. Because I was debating on whether that was a good backup.
SPEAKER 08 :
And, Joe, the other thing the hands of the carpenter has that an average repair shop doesn’t have is they’ve got volunteer technicians, people that will come in in the evenings, help them fix cars. They probably will disassemble that engine and fix it, which you can’t do in an auto shop because of the time it takes and labor involved and so on. But if they’ve got volunteers that are willing to do that, they’ll fix that, get it all up and running, and pass that on to a single mom that needs to get transportation to and from work and all of that. It’s a great ministry that they have, and that’s exactly how they’ll fix that car.
SPEAKER 09 :
Okay. And they make it work. Okay. Well, I guess that’s it then. You’ve answered some questions.
SPEAKER 08 :
Well, I appreciate your call, Joe, and it’ll help them out. You’ll not only help them, but help somebody else in need out at the same time. It reminded me that they’ll be here with me next time I’m on.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, okay.
SPEAKER 08 :
On the 28th. We’re going to have them here on the 28th. Great. I think 28th. Yeah, that sounds right. Absolutely. So we’ll have them on air.
SPEAKER 09 :
Okay. I’ve got one more question.
SPEAKER 08 :
Go ahead.
SPEAKER 09 :
The car I bought. Go ahead, Joe. The products that you push on your show, what are they? Good grief, I can’t even think of them right. ATC, BG products.
SPEAKER 08 :
BG, yep.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah, so I’ve got a different car, and I’m wondering about putting the MOA in the engine and the ATC, it’s a used car, and the ATC in the transmission. That’s a Toyota-type car, and I’m wondering if it’s okay to do that.
SPEAKER 08 :
Absolutely, yes. Not going to hurt a thing.
SPEAKER 09 :
Like the ATC is… I’ve had good results with that. The transmission, it was going bad, and I had a transmission guy say, well, that’s a big band-aid. It may be a band-aid, but it sure worked for quite a while.
SPEAKER 07 :
How many miles do you have on this Toyota?
SPEAKER 09 :
On the new one? Yeah. It’s $118,000. Okay. It’s actually a RX 350, and it was more than I shouldn’t have bought it.
SPEAKER 08 :
No, it’s a good car. You bought a great car. Yeah.
SPEAKER 07 :
Fabulous car. I would say just do a transmission flush instead of just putting the ATC in at this point. Say that again, please. Do a transmission flush on it instead of doing just the ATC. Service it. Yeah, service it. Do the whole thing if you haven’t done that.
SPEAKER 09 :
That would be good enough to do right now.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, definitely.
SPEAKER 09 :
It’s still young enough.
SPEAKER 07 :
Oh, yes.
SPEAKER 09 :
The reason I say that is on that CR-V, I had the transmission flushed, and then I had those high miles, and I called another mechanic guy down here, and they said, When they get that high, 250 or something, we won’t even do a flush on them because… There’s too many problems that could crop up.
SPEAKER 08 :
Wives’ tale. Doing that. They and I will have to agree to disagree. So I don’t look at it that way. I’ve been in the industry, you know, literally, Joe, my whole life, and my theory on that is even in a high-mile transmission, if you flush it and have problems afterwards, you are going to have problems anyways. So at the end of the day, you’re not going to change a single thing when it’s all said and done. And if you weren’t going to have problems, we put fresh fluid in it, now we’re good to go, and we keep going and done deal. So I will disagree with them on that.
SPEAKER 09 :
Okay. You have a pretty well-known outfit all around Colorado now. Anyway, okay, that answers my question.
SPEAKER 08 :
That’s a great question, Joe. So anyways, Hands of the Carpenter, they’re on our website, drive-radio.com, but it’s just Hands of the Carpenter. Call them up and tell them what you’ve got, and they’ll take care of you. Okay. Thanks a lot. Thanks, Joe. Appreciate you very much. And, yes, we will have somebody from Hands of the Carpenter on with us here in a few weeks, and they’ll talk more about how they do all of that. And for some of you, that’s a really great thing and, again, helps somebody else out at the end of the day. So, all right, we’ll be right back. We had a car review we did on Monday. We’re going to play, and we’ll be back right after that. Drive Radio, KLZ 560. Time of the week where we do some car reviews, Richard. And what have you driven lately?
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, that’s a drove a really, well, I guess one of my more enjoyable cars, to be honest with you, of late. And that’s for a lot of, for the value and just for a lot of things. And that’s the 2025 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid. And this was the nightshade package, which we’ll kind of get into. As it sits at $56,818, again, for that hybrid price. fuel economy 36 and 32 for an average of 34 and the reason i’m leading off with that is because that to me is one of the best selling features of this car and we’ve talked about this in the past right with toyota and their hybrid systems and just the hybrid um especially with fuel prices there the hybrid uh system is really second to none and and what we mean by that is just it works really well dad and it gives you an extra i don’t know i would say 10 to potentially 20 percent of added range onto the vehicle just through that extra fuel economy. It works really well. It’s simple to operate. You don’t have to do anything. And then on the Highlander itself, Dad, so the Grand Highlander is basically a Highlander, just bigger, right? It gives you a little bit more room. That third row is a little bit more spacious. There’s a little bit more room behind the third row. It’s not of these large SUV variety, Dad. It’s still kind of that midsize SUV, but it’s still a great value model. for the vehicle and again you have uh it’s it’s got a let me see here the the base hybrid is a 245 horsepower base hybrid engine um and it’s this is second for the model year dad for it was reintroduced in 2024 um but it’s it’s obviously 2025 now it really is phenomenal the interior apportionments are everything that you’d want there’s a bunch of cup holders Great center storage space for purses or for all of the kids’ nonsense that you would say. Something that you need when you have kids running around. It’s got enough room in the middle row for two booster seats or two kind of full-size seats. This model had the captain’s chairs, which worked really nice, Dad. People could get back to that third row if they needed. And like I said, the fuel economy really is great on this hybrid. And you’ve driven the Highlanders in the past. Great car. And it’s one of your more favorite kind of midsize SUVs.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, great-sized car. It’s positioned very well as far as in its class. In fact, I think, to your point, in the Grand Highlander being a little bit larger, I mean, it really is outside of probably the minivan choice or stepping up into a full-bore body-on-frame SUV. This is going to be one of your top choices for the money.
SPEAKER 06 :
It is that, and that nightshade, it sort of just kind of adds a little bit, it adds a darker theme, right? I don’t have all of the specs as far as what it does, but it is exactly that. It kind of adds a little bit different and some darker texture to it and different features that way. But it’s, again, like you say, that it’s a really efficient vehicle. And what we mean by that, folks, is outside of the hybrid, just how it’s designed. And it really is family-focused, family-centered. All of the controls are available for you. You’ve got heated and ventilated seats. I think you have a heated steering on this. You have a 360-degree… camera system. That’s a really great feature. You’ve got a panoramic roof on the vehicle, Dad. You also have the panoramic view monitoring system. Again, really a fun car. I enjoyed driving it. Owned a hybrid, or not a hybrid, owned an original Highlander. I should say not the Grand Highlander before, Dad. And this extra room was really nice, but it didn’t make the car feel that much bigger.
SPEAKER 08 :
Gotcha.
SPEAKER 06 :
Folks, if you’re interested, head to your local Toyota dealer. Test drive, again, 2025 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid. And when you do that, let them know that John and Richard Rush from Drive Radio and Rush to Reason sent you.

Do you know that your windshield is getting more expensive to replace? Most vehicles have options that help keep the vehicles from avoiding accidents or even keep it in the traffic lane. These windshields require more than just a replacement of the glass. They also require a calibration of the computer system to make sure everything is operational. to the specifications the manufacturer set when the vehicle was built. You can’t trust a traveling glass replacement shop to do these necessary calibrations as they require special equipment and in most cases, an indoor shop to perform the calibrations. We have two Novus locations that can replace your windshield and also do these calibrations. Novus Fort Collins. and Novus Sterling. Both are fully equipped with the latest technology to service your vehicle properly. Find either location by going to any of our websites, ready-radio.com, drive-radio.com, or fixitradio.com. Just click on the Novus link. That’s Novus Autoglass.

SPEAKER 08 :
All right, we are back. Drive Radio, KLZ 560. Thanks so much for listening. We appreciate it very much. Myself, Steve Horvath. And again, Larry Unger, answering phones. Charlie Grimes, our engineer. And just real quick, going back to Hands of the Carpenter. Yeah, it’s a great ministry here in town. We’ve been with them for a number of years now, trying to help them out. Anytime I get somebody that… ask me, hey, what do I do with this car that I’ve got that I don’t know what to do with anymore, and I’m not going to fix it, and this, that, and the other. There are very few cars that don’t fit what Hands of the Carpenter needs, and I’ll just tell you the last call we got from Joe, the car he has would work perfect for what they’re trying to do with their quote-unquote customers, or not customers, but the people they’re trying to assist when it’s all said and done and the other thing I like about them over a lot of other places in town that do similar things is they and we’ll talk to them about this here in a couple of weeks but they take everybody that they’re helping and go through a complete a financial course teaching them how to handle their finances, how to budget things correctly because they need to go ahead and make sure they can get the car registered, continue to register it, have insurance on it, maintain it, oil changes, the whole nine yards. So they go through the whole process whereby when they give a car to somebody, They understand the privilege that they’re now having with all of that and the fortunate side of it that they have. And I want to stay in this vehicle. And I realize now what that’s going to mean. And they help all of these individuals. They’re ladies. They help all these ladies out with all of that so that they’re just not handing in the keys to a car saying, hey, best of luck.
SPEAKER 07 :
They’re both at the same point. That’s the way Dan had explained it to me. I thought that was very interesting how he put it. The car is ready when they’re ready. Good point.
SPEAKER 08 :
That’s how he puts it. That’s a good point. I like how that works. That’s a great point. That’s a great point. So at any rate, one thing else I want to talk about today is something that I don’t know how this – well, I do know how this came up. So early in the week, my wife had seen an ad for a Chevelle. on the internet and i’m actually at this particular website right now it’s still up probably will be and as i was looking through the website and that first thing i looked at the car i’m like that’s a really good deal for a really nice car and that’s why she sent him he’s like man this is a pretty nice car for for the price and it’s a really really nice uh early chevelle 70 chevelle but it’s only priced at about forty thousand dollars and i looked at the car i’m like yeah that’s about oh, that’s about a $25,000 to $30,000 discount on what that car is probably worth. First red flag, by the way. First red flag. Too good to be true. Too good to be true. So then I’m like, I’m going to go to the website, and I’m going to thumb through a few pictures. So I did. And I noticed a picture. I’m like, man alive, that picture looks an awful lot like another outfit I know. and that’s Vanguard out of Michigan. Vanguard sells a lot of classic cars, very well-known, all upper-end type cars. You can go look them up on the internet and so on. So as I’m going through this particular, and I’ll say it publicly, as I went through this particular website, it’s classic, or sorry, choice-auto-sales.com. So I’m at the website, I’m looking, and I’m like, man, that picture looks an awful lot like Vanguard’s place. So I do a little bit just for grins. I go to Vanguard and I look at their website and I’m like, time out. The picture that’s on Choice Auto’s website is the exact same picture that’s on Vanguard’s with a different sign. So somebody photoshopped. Somebody took the picture, photoshopped a sign, and they’re pretending like this is our place. The other thing I did is I did a reverse search and just looked for Choice Auto Sales, and there is one, but it’s a rinky-dink little car lot down in Alabama. I went to Google Maps and literally… I’m not joking, guys. I’m not trying to ditz them, but this is like 15 cars in inventory on a country road, and that’s what Choice Auto Sales actually is. So then I’m like, okay, wait a minute. This is a scam. These guys are going to figure out a way to get somebody in, take their money. It’ll all happen through either cashier’s checks or wired money or whatever, and you’re never going to see the car that they’re trying to sell you, and you’re going to be out the money. So… I actually emailed Vanguard and said, hey, here is a website that is pretending to look similar to you, not pretending to be you, but pretending to look similar to you, even taking some of your cars and inventory and putting them on their site, therefore scamming people, and it’s bad for the whole industry, me included. And I got a really nice email back from a guy at Vanguard that said, hey, thanks for the heads up. We appreciate it. We’ll get on it, see what we can’t do. These are the kind of things that we need to make sure don’t happen so that people aren’t scammed and so on. And got a really nice email back from a particular individual named Paul at Vanguard. Had a nice little email conversation back and forth. But here’s my point with all of this. If you’re somebody that’s looking for those types of vehicles, And all of a sudden you even see an ad come through where you’re like, man, that’s a really, really great deal. Make sure you’re doing the research that I just said to do to verify that that, in fact, is a legit deal, legit seller, legit car. And if you have any questions at all, email me the information and I’ll do a little bit of research. And I’m not exaggerating. Within five minutes. I can tell you whether that’s a legit deal or not. That’s about all the longer I looked at this one because there was enough red flags where it was like, yeah, I don’t think that’s really all in what it seems to be, and it’s not. And these guys also claim to be in Alabama, just like the real Choice Auto Sales is. But when you go and look at Google Maps for what Choice Auto Sales is, it doesn’t look anywhere close to what this particular Choice Auto Sales is. And here’s what’s interesting. But with AI, you can do this now. Somebody built a very, very, very nice interactive website that, again, probably didn’t spend a lot of money, but pulled enough information out of other websites to build this website. And I am here to tell you that I’m not 100% positive, but I would venture to guess that that the majority, if not all of the cars on here are scam. And I can tell you by the prices. For example, 69 Chevy Camaro, 66,000 miles, 33 grand. That’s half price of what that car typically would bring. 70 Chevelle, 15,000 miles, and again, don’t even know if these are real miles or not. Anyway, and when you look at these pictures, you’re like, okay, these look like they’re probably, the car, by the way, that was sent to me that my wife found is a 70 Chevelle, 27,000 miles, 36 grand. That’s about half of what that car would probably bring in a lot of other places. Now, the whole car market right now, including classics, is down a little bit because of where we’re at economically speaking. But in a lot of cases, these cars are going to come back. Again, my point with all of this is… Please, do not give anybody any money. Do not wire anything anywhere. In the case of a classic car along these lines, I would not do a single thing. You’re going to spend a lot of money for a classic car. A $500 round-trip plane ticket isn’t much to spend to determine is this legit or not. So I wouldn’t buy anything out of state along these lines with that kind of dollar range without first… flying there, driving there, whatever the case may be, to determine is this car really there? Is it in fact legit? Is there all of the right paperwork, title, all of that with it? Otherwise, you’re liable to get scammed out of, in the case of this, 35, 40 grand, whatever it happens to be. The other red flag that I had is everything on this website, there’s not a car hardly over 40 grand, and yet they’re all classics that should be double that price. So that was my other red flag. This is not a legit site. They are scamming people when it’s all said and done. And I hate to say this. There’s probably somebody, as we speak, being scammed because they’re sending money off to somebody for a car that doesn’t exist. They’ve just taken pictures off the Internet, off of other places. And, again, the people like I talked to at Vanguard will do their best to get this shut down. But that’s easier said than done, by the way. Because once you own a domain name, it’s hard without getting a lot of authorities involved and so on and determining if somebody’s really been scammed or not. It’s extremely difficult to get these sorts of things shut down. So my point is you’re going to see these. You’re going to see more of them. You’ll even see ads on different type of social media and such on these sorts of things. They’re not legit. Do your homework. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is. And if you ever have a question, feel free to send me the information on it, and I will do my very best to verify if that’s a legit deal or not. So we’ll be back in a moment. If you guys want to add anything to that, feel free to do so. 303-477-5600. We’ll be right back, though. Drive Radio, KLZ 560.

Yes, hello, how are you guys doing? Good, Mark, how are you, sir?
SPEAKER 12 :
I’m doing great. I’m doing great. Hey, I’ve got a 2015 Nissan Armada. It’s got, I don’t know, about 230,000 miles on it. But the rear backup sensor is out. And I just wondered, is there a quick way to fix that or do I just need to replace the whole sensor? What do I do?
SPEAKER 07 :
So how do you know the sensor’s out? Are you just not getting a signal or something?
SPEAKER 12 :
Well, you know, it’s lit up on the dash where the sensor is. And then I’m not getting notified when I’m ready to hit something. So it’s not making that beeping noise that it’s used to.
SPEAKER 07 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 12 :
If that makes sense.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, I mean, the sensors are generally built into the bumper. It’s not too terribly hard to do it. I just want to make sure that that’s what the problem is, I guess, before throwing a sensor in. I think he’d want a little more diagnosing. Put a scanner on it, diagnose it, see what’s happening.
SPEAKER 12 :
Okay. I got you. That’s the only problem I’ve ever had with this car. It’s amazing.
SPEAKER 07 :
Pretty good one? Yeah. anyway yeah yeah i think it’d be a good idea at least to have it diagnosed but the sensors aren’t too bad and if we can get them there you know sometimes you have to pull the bumper off a little bit of body work kind of thing but they’re not too bad okay that sounds awesome hey one more quick question um
SPEAKER 12 :
Have you heard about these new ZF transmissions? Are they any good?
SPEAKER 08 :
Yes, very. They’re in probably, Mark, I don’t think I’m exaggerating. I’d have to look this up to verify it. But I would go as far as to say about 80% of new cars today have a ZF type, maybe not all exactly the same, but a ZF transmission in them, if that tells you anything. Multi-shifting, 10-speed, 9-speed, 10-speed. If that tells you anything, Mark, that’s how many cars have them today.
SPEAKER 12 :
Okay, I’ve kind of been looking at some new ones, and I’m seeing a lot of those around, so thanks. I appreciate it.
SPEAKER 07 :
And that’s where they get the mileage from, the gas mileage, all the extra speeds. Yep. You know, it’s up to 10-speed. I think that’s my truck is a 10-speed transmission.
SPEAKER 08 :
That’s a German company, and they have been, again, been around for quite some time, and there is a lot of vehicles out there today, Mark, that have a ZF transmission, so a lot.
SPEAKER 12 :
Well, that’s good to know. Well, I appreciate it, guys. I’ll get this out and get it back to you.
SPEAKER 08 :
All right. Sounds great, Mark. Appreciate it very much. Thanks for the phone call. Kevin, you are next. Go ahead.
SPEAKER 11 :
Hi. Good morning, guys. How’s everybody?
SPEAKER 08 :
We are great. How are you, sir?
SPEAKER 11 :
It’s a beautiful morning.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yes, it is.
SPEAKER 11 :
Too bad I can’t get anything done around the house. I’ve got to go to work. But anyway, I recently went to Napa, got an oil filter for my Honda Goldwing. And I notice now they are built in China. Do I need to be worried about this? Some are, some aren’t.
SPEAKER 08 :
Depends on which one. Thank you. It depends on the skew. Some are, some aren’t. Doesn’t matter. Quality is still the same, Kevin. When it’s all said and done, there was a big to-do on the Internet about a year ago. There was a shop down south that had found that, you know, hey, this box has got a China filter in it versus this one and so on. He made a big to-do on the Internet about it. Napa got very involved. got all of their testing and all of their their data points and so on and came back and explained all of it. And it just comes down to where things are manufactured today. They do try to do as many of them in the USA as they can. But the reality is, as you know, from even what’s happening with tariffs and so on, not everything comes from the US, even though we would like it to. Some of that might switch some of that around. But no, you are going to find some inventory in some places, depending upon the skew that will say made in China. And it depends on the part of your country, too. That’s correct as well.
SPEAKER 07 :
What Napa learned quite a bit from the COVID stuff was that to get more manufacturers involved. So you might be living in California. You might get a different filter from different manufacturers than you would on the East Coast instead of just one manufacturer. So that’s why there’s some differences. So they may not be able to get that particular one there. But maybe if you bought in California, it would be American-made, if you understand what I’m saying. All right.
SPEAKER 08 :
I wouldn’t lose any sleep over it, Kevin. Let me just say that.
SPEAKER 11 :
All right. Well, I appreciate it. I do rely heavily on your expertise and your opinions. They do matter.
SPEAKER 08 :
Well, thank you. Let me just say this. I’m still running Napa Gold or Platinum, depending upon that particular SKU and what’s available. Typically Gold, because the Platinum filters in some SKUs are just not as many of them around as they used to be. In a lot of cases, I can’t even find them. I don’t even know if they have the Platinum.
SPEAKER 07 :
They’re starting to phase them out.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, they’re becoming less and less, and so the gold filters, you know, I use and go to my own home shop, Kevin, and look on my shelf, and what I’ve got in inventory will be Napa Golds.
SPEAKER 11 :
All right, appreciate that. And one more quick question, if you don’t mind. Sure, go right ahead. Got a 2012 Tahoe with that, I believe that’s a 6L80 transmission, the six-speed automatic.
SPEAKER 10 :
Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER 11 :
Do… Has GM started putting drain plugs in those oil pans?
SPEAKER 08 :
No.
SPEAKER 11 :
I need to do a transmission service on that. The last one was pretty grody, even though I sucked a lot of the fluid out of the dipstick tube with a little pump.
SPEAKER 08 :
Mm-hmm. Yeah, the problem is you still have all of the oil internal in the transmission that’s not going to come out, things that get stuck in the drums and things that are inside of it. On top of that, you’ve got the converter that’s full that you’re not getting the oil out of. The only way to really get the oil out and new in is to do a fluid transfer we call a flush. You’re literally taking all the old out, putting all new in. And you don’t even do that by taking the pan off. It’s a machine that does that.
SPEAKER 11 :
Right. I understand that. I think that hooks up to the oil cooler line.
SPEAKER 08 :
It does. That’s exactly right. You’re 100% correct.
SPEAKER 11 :
All right. Well, what I was looking at doing was dropping this pan, changing the filter, and going with an aftermarket pan with a drain plug. And then in, oh, I don’t know, 5,000, 6,000, 7,000 miles down the road, maybe at second oil change, just dropping that drain plug out of the transmission. And draining it all again, and eventually, after maybe two or three oil changes, it’ll all be good fluid again.
SPEAKER 08 :
Think of it this way. You’re not going down the wrong path, although this is the best explanation that I’ve ever… Uh, found when it comes to think of having an entire full dishwater, you know, you’re doing dishes in the sink and you’ve got, you know, it says after Thanksgiving and everything is all full and you’ve got all of the grease and everything else that’s in there. Because even if you use a dishwasher, you’re still, you know, most women require you to, you know, do your initial wash and then you’re sticking it anywhere. Regardless, you’ve got all this dirty dishwater that’s in there, Kevin. Think of taking the stopper out and letting about a third of it out and putting it back in and putting new water in. And then take a third out and put new water in, third out. No matter how many times you do that, until you completely drain that sink, it’s got dirty water. That’s a great way to explain it.
SPEAKER 11 :
Right, understand that.
SPEAKER 08 :
No matter what you do, it’s going to have some dirty fluid in it, period.
SPEAKER 11 :
Right, understand that. Well, by dropping the pan, at least in my mind, I have the satisfaction… of knowing, you know, that it’s got a new clean filter. And I get inspected.
SPEAKER 08 :
And this is the thing, though. It’s not really a filter. It’s a screen. You can look for debris and so on. But what I would do, and you’ll be money ahead, just pay somebody to flush it and be done with it.
SPEAKER 07 :
You know, the other satisfaction you’re getting is you’re getting really dirty doing it. That’s about the most messiest job, changing the transmission panel. Not arguing that.
SPEAKER 11 :
That doesn’t bother me.
SPEAKER 08 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 11 :
A little bit of dirt, a little bit of grime.
SPEAKER 08 :
But I would flush it, Kevin. I mean, honestly, for the sake of what you’re doing and the longevity of that transmission and knowing which one that is, I would do a fluid exchange.
SPEAKER 11 :
All right. All right. Sounds good.
SPEAKER 08 :
All right, Kevin. Appreciate you very much. Nope. Thank you very much. We’ll come right back. Miller Flauer coming your way. Drive Radio, KLZ 560.
