SPEAKER 01 :
Mike Gallagher. Every day, Mike visits with Mark Davis. Morning host on 660 AM, The Answer in Dallas. Here’s today’s Eminem experience.
SPEAKER 02 :
Multiple value here. Is that the actual George M. Cohen?
SPEAKER 03 :
Or is that Jimmy Cagney? It’s Jimmy Cagney from 1942, a role in Yankee Doodle Dandy, for which he won an Oscar. Here we go, coming off Oscar Day, the original George M. Cohen. But the song was written by, of course, the original George M. Cohen. Come a long way since those days, baby. The song was written in 1904. Uh-huh. So we know you’re cruising the Great White Way over the weekend. They’re in New York City. And I wondered to the audience if Showbiz Mike was compelled to at least dip his toe into the Oscar pool.
SPEAKER 02 :
Yeah, I did. I watched a pretty good amount of it. You know, the opening was pretty old school, was neat. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande singing from Wicked and Over the Rainbow. And it was really well done. And Conan, I mean, does Conan have, is he on the air now anywhere? No.
SPEAKER 03 :
Short answer is no, yet his footprint is everywhere because he has like a couple of various podcasts, and I listen to him and to it all the time. Oh, do you? He’s one of my favorite folks ever to come out of the late-night cauldron. He really, really is.
SPEAKER 02 :
I’ve run into him in New York like three times, seeing him going in and out of restaurants. He is huge. That’s a big, gangly boy. And then he’s got all that hair on top of that. It’s about 10 inches on top of his head. That’s correct. You know, he did a pretty good job. I mean, there was a weird moment. Did you see the scene with the firefighters? Fast forward. Mark, this was weird.
SPEAKER 03 :
Because it was long. I figured, okay, it’s a tribute to the firefighters. I love that. But it was also getting to be 10, and I was watching on DVR and I needed to go to bed.
SPEAKER 02 :
So how did that go? Well, they brought out members of the L.A. Fire Department, which was nice. And then they kind of went stand-up. They had the different firefighters do stand-up routines. And I’m thinking, man, people lost their homes. People were killed. Yeah. And, yo, that fire was so bad it even took out the producer, the one producer’s home of the Joker 2. His house burned down. Thinking, what? It was really awkward. It was, I don’t know, I don’t quite understand the effort to make a comedy bit.
SPEAKER 03 :
It’s funny. As soon as I saw that it was ending, I saw that there was one lady who was like delivering some snappy comedy line.
SPEAKER 02 :
Yeah. Well, they all did.
SPEAKER 03 :
They’ve given them shtick. It’s like, OK, I think it was to not humanize, but to give them a moment. I can understand how somebody could sit in a room and think it was a good idea. But in practice, apparently not.
SPEAKER 02 :
Well, anyway, whatever. I mean, and there was a huge drama about the star of Amelia Perez because apparently it’s the first trans actor to be nominated for an Academy Award. But the trans actor has quite a social media footprint. A whole bunch of George Floyd called George Floyd a drug.
SPEAKER 03 :
It was like tweets.
SPEAKER 02 :
And even diversity, equity and inclusion. And so now you’ve got Hollywood having to deal with a real crisis here because one of their own went rogue. They weren’t going to pay to have this particular performer go to the Oscars. And Netflix was the company behind. And incidentally, Netflix. Netflix now is this huge player in this space. Wow. It’s so weird to see that. You know, you use Paramount or Warner Brothers. It’s a whole new day. But anyway, it was just a weird, kind of an odd night. And I don’t know. What was the best picture? Onora.
SPEAKER 03 :
Onora. Did you see it? Not yet. I’ll probably get to it.
SPEAKER 02 :
Everything streams now, so you get to see everything I want to do with actual people.
SPEAKER 03 :
I wait for things to come to my house these days.
SPEAKER 02 :
There you go. Well, President Trump waited for Zelensky to show up, and it didn’t go too well for Zelensky, now did it?
SPEAKER 03 :
But Mike, they baited him. They trapped him. This noble leader was gaslit by Trump and Vance so that Trump and Vance could have a media moment. Haven’t you been listening to the analysis?
SPEAKER 02 :
You know, watch Molly Hemingway’s analysis. There’s two smart people on this, Victor Davis Hanson and Molly Hemingway. And Molly Hemingway has this peg. You know, there’s Obama Democrats who are taking this poor guy, Zelensky, down the wrong path. And I’m convinced and she’s convinced. And when you listen to what Susan Rice had to say about the Oval Office meeting, it was a setup all right. The Democrats tried to set Trump up by having Zelensky be petulant. Look, Scott Jennings put it best. All Zelensky had to do was put on a tie, show up. Say thank you. Say thank you. Sign the mineral documents and have lunch and call it a day. Get out. He couldn’t do that. He couldn’t do any of that. He had to browbeat. Listen, browbeating President Trump in public is never going to go well for you.
SPEAKER 03 :
No.
SPEAKER 02 :
Ever. No matter who it is. But look, we know what this boils down to. And this is the conflict among the American people that we can’t get ourselves out of. You know, Zelensky has said repeatedly, and he told Brett Baer this too, by the way, his numbers had to be huge Friday night because Zelensky fulfilled the promise to be interviewed by Brett Baer on Fox News after this train wreck of an Oval Office meeting. And he said to Brett, my people want to hear the U.S. is on our side. Not their side. Exactly. You’re never going to hear that from Donald Trump. You’re not going to get that.
SPEAKER 03 :
And he said, I’m on the side of peace. I’m on the side of the world. I’m on the side of Europe. Which, true, because it’s a European problem.
SPEAKER 02 :
And I love the headlines today. Oh, now Europe promises to stand up. Now they’re going to stand. Good. Good. Perfect.
SPEAKER 03 :
Go ahead. It shows already that what he did was exactly the right thing because all these European toadies all got together and said, oh, we’re sorry, Ukraine. Don’t worry. We’ve got your back. We’ll be there for you. Exactly. Like you always should have been. It was always a European problem before it was an American problem.
SPEAKER 02 :
That’s exactly right. And most Americans, as CNN’s Harry Enten, and I’m starting to wonder if he’s not a closet conservative. This guy, he almost gets giddy when he gets to read numbers that contradict the typical CNN narrative. But he’s saying, look, the support is great. bottoming out for Ukraine, we’re not going to give them a blank check. And Trump is not going to take sides on this. He wants peace. He does not want to kick Vladimir Putin in the shins. That’s right. Why is this hard for people to understand?
SPEAKER 03 :
Bill Clinton gets it. There’s this wonderful Bill Clinton clip. I’m trying to remember who was interviewing him 15, 20 years ago. And they asked him, maybe it was Chris Wallace, your buddy Chris Wallace, who was talking about getting with Putin behind closed doors, said Putin is very smart. He’s very territorial. He knows what he wants to do. And we had to be brutally, brutally honest with each other. But Bill Clinton then said, well, I’ll tell you what, I wasn’t going to be real ugly to him out there in front of the cameras because that’s not the way.
SPEAKER 04 :
President Trump is moving at lightning speed.

SPEAKER 02 :
way to deal with people said exactly exactly but i have to say i i watched uh i had fox on in the hotel room uh saturday just watching in amazement at the way this thing all played out it was that was it was stunning but there was there was bill mcgurn and carl rove taking to fox news carl rove oh this should have taken place behind closed doors the way they like it Bill McGurn, this should have taken place in a back room. Keep the American, in other words, keep the American people in the dark. Well, guess what? This is a completely transparent presidency. This guy, Trump, is as transparent as the day is long. And he wants the American people to see how the sausage is being made. And look, but I don’t even think it was Trump’s intention to have that kind of display in the Oval Office. Nope. I mean, you were talking about our buddy Brian Glenn from Real America’s Voice. Yep. I mean, I started to think, well, maybe that’s a little too much. Wait a minute. I’ve seen pictures of Zelensky in a suit and tie. Me too. I thought maybe it’s a Ukrainian thing. Maybe they just wear black monochromatic suits or something or like leisure suits. No, he’s worn a suit and tie before. This is part of his outfit. You know, I couldn’t believe it when he used the word costume. It is a costume. Well, guess what? Hundreds of thousands of people are dying. This is not a play. This is not a game. And, you know, Zelensky’s getting some bad, bad advice.
SPEAKER 03 :
And the point you made deserves a moment of deeper dive because these Obama-era… The old, not old school, 10, 15 years ago, Democrats, the appeasement crowd that, of course, yielded the Biden years. They have been telling him, get in there, give as good as you can get with Trump. He will fold. He’s intellectually empty and you will wind up looking fantastic there in the Oval Office. And he believed that and believed his own press and went in there and got humiliated. And what this the result of this is so golden. It was it had value in and of its own moments. Right. But then as Saturday became Sunday, it smoked out all the weasels, all the Democrats and the ex-GOP weasels. I’ve never been so ashamed to be an American. Shut up. But the thing that happened was in the public polling, I guarantee you that there are people who don’t really like Trump all that much, but they like this. And there are also people who thought they kind of admired Zelensky and maybe now not so much. What? It’s Christmas in February.
SPEAKER 02 :
I’ll bet 80 percent of the people who are enamored with Zelensky and Ukraine putting their stupid, you know, flags in the yard and all that. It’s just Trump hatred. When Biden was fighting with Zelensky, they didn’t seem to mind. Remember, it’s been reported that Biden famously lost his temper because Zelensky wasn’t expressing proper gratitude and appreciation for what we were doing. So look, you’re right. It’s a whole new day. It’s Christmas every morning. Again, back to Molly Hemingway. She points out that Susan Rice, the Obama acolyte, revealed full knowledge of the mineral agreement. She complained that it didn’t include concrete security agreements. By the way, if we have mineral rights to Ukraine, there is an absolute guaranteed security agreement there. We’re going to protect our investment. That’s exactly right. We’re going to protect our investment. So you don’t need to spell it. Zelensky’s playing a game. But look, when you look at Susan Rice… This was a setup, and again, it was set. Read her work. Read Victor Davis Hanson. Just fascinating stuff. So good. By the way, back to show business for a minute. I don’t even know the guy’s name who was the Saturday Night Live host. Do you know who it was? Oh, Shane Gillis. Magnificent. Who the heck is Shane Gillis?
SPEAKER 03 :
He is a comedian, and he’s not necessarily all that MAGA or all that conservative, but he’s just Trump-friendly and does a pretty good Trump. and has a stand-up career and a TV and film career of sorts. It was that rarest of all creatures, a genuinely wonderful SNL episode.
SPEAKER 02 :
Well, I’m dying to see it. I haven’t had the team play it for me yet, but I didn’t watch it. But the skit they did called Couple of Beers is being called the best Saturday Night Live skit in decades.
SPEAKER 03 :
And I think there was actually one thing on that episode that was better. A couple of beers is a product that says, hi, I was having a tough time at work. I was having a tough time in my marriage. But then I discovered a couple of beers. And he lifts this enormous can out of a cooler, takes a big slug out of it. A couple of beers can make a boring day interesting, can make all your relationships improve. blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. So it’s kind of a bit of satire on that. My favorite thing was the newscast featuring him, Kenan Thompson, Heidi Gardner, and what it was, you had two black anchors and two white anchors, and they start a news report that features a crime clearly committed by black people because of where it was, the name involved, and the black anchors go, oh, jeez. And then they have a crime that was clearly committed by white people because it was a meth lab in a quiet suburban neighborhood. It went, ah! That’s y’all. That’s y’all. And it was like back and forth between which was going to be worse, the crime committed by black folks or the crime committed. It was genius. And it wasn’t just genius on its own. It reminded us of what it was like to have a sense of humor in this country. It reminded us because when we’re having a little fun with each other, with stereotypes, it was a better country before wokeness and cancel culture destroyed our ability to have some fun and a sense of humor.
SPEAKER 02 :
with each other but like it was really really good but like border crossings wokeness and cancel culture are slowly dying i mean you see those numbers oh my gosh the border numbers are plummeting and and i think people are tired of uh of the whole cancel culture and that’s drying up but back to crime for just a moment real quick did you see what happened in boston an off-duty cop shot and killed a lunatic who was trying to stab people to death at a chick-fil-a okay The off-duty cop kills the knife-wielding maniac. The mayor of Boston, as well as Boston officials, take to the podium.
SPEAKER 03 :
Did they express empathy? Did they express their feelings?
SPEAKER 02 :
Oh, yes, they did. Good. They did. For the knife-wielding maniac. Yes. I mean, unbelievable. The mayor says… Michelle Wu, my condolences and all of our thoughts, not some of our thoughts, all of our thoughts are with the family of the individual whose life has been lost. I mean, Mark, these people are nuts. They’re crazy. When you go out to the podium and you’re the mayor of Boston, do you think that’s a good idea? Is that going to be a good look? And I don’t even know the race or ethnicity of the knife-wielding maniac. I can guess. I can assume because it must be in a marginalized class. My gosh almighty. Oh, well. What’s going to happen this week? I mean, tomorrow night. What’s going to happen today? This big speech tomorrow night. We’re going to cover it, of course. I’m going to be…
SPEAKER 03 :
I can Google this. This is technically not a State of the Union. It’s not a State of the Union. What’s the difference? It’s a speech before a joint session of Congress.
SPEAKER 02 :
Right.
SPEAKER 03 :
It’s going to look like one. It’s going to sound like one. Why is it not a State of the Union?
SPEAKER 02 :
I think it’s because it’s his first year of his presidency. I think it’s only after he’s got to be in office at least a year before he can give a State of the Union. everybody so bush in 01 was not right it was a it was a special address to the joint session and i love the analysis over at axios the democrats don’t know whether to show up and be resistance right or or boycott it and be resistance what do you what do you want them to do oh stay home i don’t care more sheets for republicans the applause from our side will seem louder That’s exactly right. All right, well, we’re all over. Big week ahead.
SPEAKER 03 :
Happy Monday. Happy Monday, Mike, is in New York City doing the Great White Way and knocking them dead. It’s a boffo engagement for Mike.
