HR3 Should Retirees Return to Work Amid Economic Uncertainty? Tabor & Dems 4-7-25 by John Rush
SPEAKER 08 :
This is Rush to Reason.
SPEAKER 11 :
You are going to shut your damn yapper and listen for a change because I got you pegged, sweetheart. You want to take the easy way out because you're scared. And you're scared because if you try and fail, there's only you to blame. Let me break this down for you. Life is scary. Get used to it. There are no magical fixes.
SPEAKER 08 :
With your host, John Rush.
SPEAKER 21 :
My advice to you is to do what your parents did.
SPEAKER 17 :
Get a job first. You haven't made everybody equal. You've made them the same, and there's a big difference.
SPEAKER 18 :
Let me tell you why you're here. You're here because you know something. What you know you can't explain, but you feel it. You've felt it your entire life, that there's something wrong with the world. You don't know what it is, but it's there. It is this feeling that has brought you to me.
SPEAKER 16 :
Are you crazy? Am I? Or am I so sane that you just blew your mind?
SPEAKER 20 :
It's Rush to Reason with your host, John Rush. Presented by Cub Creek Heating and Air Conditioning.
SPEAKER 03 :
All right, hour number three. Welcome. Rush to Reason, Denver's Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560. Normally we have our Monday Mortgage Minute with Kurt Rogers, but Kurt is unavailable at the moment, so I will help out with the Monday Mortgage Minute. I happen to actually be looking at mortgage rates. This morning I had a client that we were discussing some things, and mortgage rates happened to be one of those, and I did notice that there had been another drop recently. In rates, since we talked to Kurt last week, so my suggestion would be if you're interested in where things are at and where things might be headed, which, personally speaking, I think, well, not personally speaking, but everything Donald Trump is doing right now, tariffs, all the talk of, and so on, it's pushing rates down because it has to do with the bond market and what's happening with T-bills and so on anyways. Talk to Kurt to find out exactly where things are now, where things might be going. He doesn't have a crystal ball, although I will be hard-pressed to believe that in the next 45 days or so, the next Fed meeting is exactly a month from now, I will be hard-pressed to believe that something doesn't change then. Already putting downward pressure on interest rates right now with what Trump's doing. I would be surprised if there's not a quote-unquote Fed change at that point. Some of you may argue with me, and I may be wrong, but I think you're liable to see one. Now, it doesn't mean that because Fed lowers rates that it's going to lower mortgage rates because, again, they're tied to things differently than the short-term rate the Fed does, but there's an overall effect, and you guys understand that. Where I'm going with this is, if you're thinking about doing anything, even in the next 90 to 120 days, talk to Kurt now. Find out exactly what do I need to do with either my credit, with my score, can I raise it, is it good where it's at, can I go ahead and get pre-qualified right now based upon the information that you're giving Kurt. On and on you go. And so my suggestion is talk to Kurt now, even if you're thinking of doing something in the not-too-distant future, even early summer. Get started on that now. Talk to Kurt. Find out exactly what he can do for you. And get that process going, because if there's any adjustments or anything that need to be made, credit-wise and so on, much easier to get that done now. than it is down the road and again as you get everything done and settled in now and rates come down you're in much better shape once that happens so i would call kurt and get that handled 720-895-0500 don't forget tomorrow kurt takes over haystack help radio from noon to one you can listen to him tomorrow during that time frame is all and even call in and ask questions but best thing to do is just call kurt direct 720-895-0500

SPEAKER 05 :
I'm great, thanks.
SPEAKER 03 :
CEO and founder of the Unretire Group. And there's a lot of things going on in the world today. And something that we talk about here quite a bit, and that is, A, I'm not – I guess I am somewhat – retired now I get up and do what I want to do not what somebody else wants me to do I consider that being retired I know a lot of people might argue with me because I still put in about 60 to 70 hours a week but it's by my choice not because I have to and I'm one of those that probably never will retire right lucky you well I don't know I think there are those in in the world that might say you know John you could slow down at some point but that's just you know it's my it's my nature it's who I am and so on I just was raised that way I guess Risa
SPEAKER 05 :
Right, right. No, and that's great. You know, there are so many people who work to not work. And that is one of the reasons.
SPEAKER 03 :
I've never heard that. Yeah, work to not work. Good one, by the way.
SPEAKER 05 :
Work to not work. And it's just something that I never understood. Like, why would you spend 30, 40 years doing something so that you don't have to do it anymore and that you're just kind of watching the clock? And now there are apps where, you know, it ticks down the nanoseconds until you retire. And, you know, I think that's nuts. And if you're doing that, you probably should find something that you enjoy doing so that when you do hit your 50s or 60s, then you don't want to leave. And yeah, of course, scale it back. You don't have to work 60 hours.
SPEAKER 03 :
No, no, no. I do that because I literally, for me, I love it. I enjoy it. I guess some of it is, in a way, a hobby for me, I guess, Risa. And I'm also one where... And I have to always be careful not to get off on rabbit trails, but I'm also one where God worked six, rested the seventh, not because he had to, but to show us that we needed to have that one day of rest. But we've gotten into this world now to where all of a sudden, literally because of Henry Ford, we have a 40-hour work week, two days off on the weekend. And I'm not trying to criticize anybody that doesn't work six days a week, but that's not in the Bible.
SPEAKER 05 :
But no, we were designed to produce. God made us to produce. We should be producing. And you know what? Sure, you hit 50, 60, 70. You don't have to work 70 hours a week. But gosh, you do have to produce. That's what we're supposed to do. And the other thing about that is the message that it sends to kids or even just the younger generation is, about the dignity of work.
SPEAKER 10 :
Good point.
SPEAKER 05 :
If we're working really hard so that we don't have to work, what does that teach our kids? To do the same. To do the same. And now all of a sudden, what happens to our economy? Nobody's producing.
SPEAKER 03 :
Nobody produces. Yeah, thank you. No, you can... Well, we even got an issue where it's kind of the opposite end of this. You know, this is a conversation about retirees even going back into the workplace, which we'll get to, but there's also now this whole generation of young people that are realizing, wait a minute, I can make just as much money sitting in mom's basement on unemployment as I can working, so why don't I go do that instead?
SPEAKER 05 :
Well, you know, shame on the generation that has kind of taught them that we're working to not work. That work is something that's maybe not so great.
SPEAKER 03 :
I want to go one step further. I think in a lot of ways, and again, I try to not get too political in these particular scenarios, but I'm a political commentator and so on and so forth. I think by design, we've got now several generations where work is a dirty word.
SPEAKER 05 :
It's a dirty word. Yes, and it has very bad effects. on the person. So there is an increased rate of depression among retirees. So personally, it's really bad to not work. You lose connections with people. You feel isolated. You kind of lose your sense of purpose. That's bad. But it's also bad for the economy. It's bad for companies. It's bad for corporate cultures. When companies don't have that experience and that expertise, to help bring the young kids along and teach them the value of work and what long hours mean. I'm not going to throw my son under the bus, and I hope he's not listening, but he's 30 and was working until 8.30 for a stretch. And wasn't happy about it. And I thought, oh, my gosh. And I was telling a friend of mine about that. And he said, well, that's because he sees all his friends playing pickleball at 430.
SPEAKER 03 :
That's right. He hasn't been like I've been self-employed since I was 22. So I've never, I guess, really been able to look at things the way that he is, because there were a lot of years where 830 was the norm, Risa.
SPEAKER 05 :
Right, exactly. You go home for dinner and you go back to the office. Correct, any choice. Yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER 03 :
Now, really quick, I want to make sure I throw this in there because I also know and I know of individuals where, you know, they get to that point for whatever reason, you know, something maybe even happened through COVID. I've known of individuals where, you know, because of mandates and other things, they decided to just separate from that company and go and do something else. Although I can tell you those particular people that I know while they – will say, listen, quote, unquote, I'm retired. They're not.
SPEAKER 05 :
They're not. Right, exactly.
SPEAKER 03 :
They're still doing a gazillion things.
SPEAKER 05 :
Right, right. But I'll argue that they probably still should be doing what they had been doing because they were good at it. And the economy needs them to be doing that. The companies need them to be doing what they're good at. You know, there's... Go ahead, do board work, volunteer, all of that. But if you're an accountant, if you're a lawyer, you've been paid for 34 years because you're good at what you do. We need you to continue doing that.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, do it again. Keep doing it. Absolutely.
SPEAKER 05 :
Do it 10, 20 hours a week.
SPEAKER 03 :
Absolutely.
SPEAKER 05 :
But it's just important. Train, mentor.
SPEAKER 03 :
Well, yeah, and you know what? I appreciate you saying that because there's ways to work and maybe even make a little bit of money, maybe not. I mean, at the end of the day, if that's not your main goal but you still want something to do, what you just said a moment ago is spot on. You can coach others. You can mentor others. You can volunteer. There's all sorts of communities. community things you can get involved in. You know, my wife is one, Risa, where my dad's in memory care, and she spends quite a few hours during the week at a memory care facility, and it cracks me up. Every time you walk in, she knows all the residents, and she knows all the nurses, and I'm like, why don't you just work here?
SPEAKER 05 :
Yes, she is working there.
SPEAKER 03 :
Pretty much is, yes.
SPEAKER 05 :
Right, exactly. And that's the thing. It's not a money thing. No, that's right. You know, most people, it used to be that people retired Because they were tired. You know, like in the 60s, people retired at 60 and they were probably dead by 70.
SPEAKER 10 :
Right.
SPEAKER 05 :
Or earlier. Life expectancy. Or earlier. It was actually 68 was the average.
SPEAKER 10 :
Right.
SPEAKER 05 :
But they were tired. They were manufacturing. They were transportation. They were industrial jobs. Their bodies were tired. Now, we're not. We're knowledge workers.
SPEAKER 10 :
True.
SPEAKER 05 :
And and we're not tired like they were in those days.
SPEAKER 03 :
There's a lot of folks, Risa, that are, you know, retiring. In fact, IBM did a study years and years and years ago. This is 40 plus years ago. They figured out that, OK, we've got some guys that are retiring that are in their mid to late 50s. They've started working for us right out of college. They put their 30 years in. They've got a nice pension and they're dying. two to three years after retiring because they have no, all of what you're saying, there's no purpose. There's nothing for them to do. So IBM really quick. So IBM started a program by the way, where they started training them other things, hobbies, whatever, so that that wouldn't happen to them.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah. I love it. I love it. The other thing is with, with women and retirement, you know, when I started working in the insurance industry, like 35, 37 years ago, women were making 85% of what men made. And, you know, I've never been terribly interested in that. My thought process was, you know what, put your head down, do your work, and good things will happen. That's right. But, you know what, fast forward, women are still only making 85% of what men make. And I don't know really what the reason for that is. I don't think it's anything nefarious. I think what it is is that women are the primary caregivers when their kids are young, so they're outside of the workforce, and then they come back for maybe 15 years, and then women at age 50 become the primary caregivers for their aging parents.
SPEAKER 03 :
That's right.
SPEAKER 05 :
And so what happens is those women... Their roles change. Their roles change, exactly, whereas the men aren't. Their roles aren't changing as much. But what happens, and that's all great, and that's kind of the route I've taken... But what happens is then women are making less than men, so they're saving less than men. And their retirement is much less than the men. Good point. And they live longer. Double whammy. Yeah, exactly. I want to get that word out so that women start to think a little differently about what they're doing and how they're doing it.
SPEAKER 03 :
And, you know, this is a conversation that, you know, my wife and I have a lot, uh, Risa, cause we're kind of in that same end of things. Um, you know, my dad's in memory care. Uh, my wife does a lot to do has a lot to do with helping with all of the things that involve that. And any of you that are listening, you understand exactly what I mean by that. There's just a lot of moving pieces that are always going on when those things are, uh, And so on the same token, Risa, we have a lot of conversations along the lines of, OK, if something were to happen to me personally, what does she then do down the road financially and all of that? And of course, I've got all that dialed in and figured out. But those are important conversations to have, by the way.
SPEAKER 05 :
Exactly. Exactly. Very important to have. And, you know, a lot of people probably aren't having them to the extent that you and your wife are.
SPEAKER 03 :
You know what? I guarantee you they are not. Some of those are conversations where, I don't know, Reese, I think some people just feel like, oh, we'll get to that at some point. Well, some point comes and we never talked about it.
SPEAKER 05 :
Right. Exactly. And it comes really fast sometimes.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yes. Yeah. Yeah. As a family that we've had all sorts of tragedies happen over the last year, year and a half or so. And yes, things happened way beyond our control that we have no idea are coming. And you've got to be ready no matter what.
SPEAKER 05 :
You've got to be ready. Right. Exactly. And that's why women, I think women need to think about retirement a little bit differently maybe than they have in the past.
SPEAKER 03 :
So the Unretire group, talk to us about that and what you guys do.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah, so it's a platform, and I quit my job in August and hired a team of six, and we built this platform. So there's a retiree portal. Retirees can sign up, no charge, and they get into the portal, and they can see all the projects that have been posted by companies. They can apply with one easy click, or... on the, on the company side, the companies see all the retirees, they can post the projects for 500 bucks a month per project, and they can invite retirees to apply to the project. So it's, it's a platform that goes both ways. Um, we have over 200, uh, retirees have signed up in the last two and a half months. Um, since we opened it up for them, we launched on the company side, uh, last Tuesday, uh, So we're pounding the pavement now to get companies to start posting projects. And my view is this should be the go-to place for the insurance industry, for insurance companies, reinsurance companies, agents, brokers, post projects. And retirees, there are so many people that I have talked to over the last couple of months that are just dying to pick up projects.
SPEAKER 03 :
And really quick, what these retirees should be, for all of you listening, if you find yourself in that end of things, and given that I coach other businesses and do things along those lines outside of the show, Risa, they should have their own little company formed already, be figuring out exactly what they need to do as far as all that goes tax-wise, because then as they freelance around and have different income, they can then have the right expenses to go against that and not be taxed too heavily. Right.
SPEAKER 05 :
Right. Exactly. Exactly.
SPEAKER 03 :
Ways to do that to basically unretire, but still do well tax wise.
SPEAKER 05 :
Right. Exactly. Exactly.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, no, this is great. A, I appreciate you being with us. B, I think that this is something that a lot of people really, they don't think through this whole process. I mean, to your point, a lot of people work to not work, and then when they're not working, it's like, oh, geez, now what? I never really planned for this.
SPEAKER 05 :
Now what do I do? And so many people have been downsized or right-sized, and who do companies let go first? They let the 55 to 60-year-olds go. Yeah, that's right. And those are the guys that thought they were going to work another five years.
SPEAKER 03 :
And unfortunately for the company, they're the smartest of the whole group, but that doesn't matter to the company.
SPEAKER 05 :
No, well, because they're the most expensive.
SPEAKER 03 :
That's right.
SPEAKER 05 :
But companies can get them back in through Unretire, and they're not paying benefits, so it's cheaper for the company to go that route. All right, what's the website? Unretire.io.
SPEAKER 1 :
Check us out.
SPEAKER 03 :
Okay, we'll do it. Risa, thank you very much. You're welcome anytime. Let me know when you want to come back.
SPEAKER 05 :
Awesome. Thanks so much, John.
SPEAKER 03 :
You bet. Appreciate it very much. Thank you. And again, for those of you that maybe are getting to that point where you're thinking about retiring or slowing down, quote unquote, but you're like, listen, I don't want to slow down fully. I still want to do some things. You know what? That might be an answer for you. Now, for all of you, that's a little different, and I'm always one to say I cannot tell somebody what – quote-unquote, looks like, because I think that's different for everybody that's out there. Some, you know, retirement is, I want to sit home, watch the golf games that are on, you know, the golf channel all day long. Maybe I want to go play a little bit of golf myself, and that's what I want to do in retirement. Okay, great. Real quick, not for me. That would I would go I would go stir crazy I couldn't do that that that you could ask my wife even that would not fly for me personally that would literally drive me crazy I've got to have something to do a project to work on something to feel How should I say? And fulfilled isn't the right word for me. I want something that I can see an accomplishment in when it's all said and done. And partially why I love not only doing this show, but I love coaching as well, because the coaching side of it, especially there's a huge sense of accomplishment. When I hear some of the things I hear from some of my clients, when certain things go a particular way and there's a success and there's a celebration, it's always a lot of fun. And for me personally, I love seeing that. I love seeing my people be Gino's Auto Service coming up next. Now, when it comes to your vehicle and the maintenance, repair of, we've got you covered. Gino's Auto Service can take care of you and your vehicle. And as we head down this summer stretch, don't forget, AC season will be upon us here very, very soon. All right. Adventures of Jimmy and Andrew. Great book to teach young people how to learn how to read. Use code KLZ. Get 10% off. And don't forget, that's American Stonehenge by Mike Goldstein. And Mike has a real burden to teach young people how to read. And you can do that again. Just go to JimmyAndAndrew.com.
SPEAKER 14 :
Only 31% of eighth graders can read proficiently.
SPEAKER 1 :
31%.
SPEAKER 14 :
This is Mike Goldstein, and I wrote American Stonehenge, The Adventures of Jimmy and Andrew, specifically to help fix our children's illiteracy problem. Reading is a key to critical thinking, and it opens doors for kids as they grow. Reading helps us to figure out the world, to learn new things, and to experience life to its fullest. American Stonehenge has some bigger words, but your child or grandchild will expand their vocabulary. Unlike many other books, American Stonehenge doesn't talk down to kids. It asks them to continue learning. But it's more than just big words. It's a carefully crafted journey, along with history, into a land of imagination. Find out what others are saying about my book by going to klzradio.com slash read where you'll find a sample and see reviews from people all over the world. And for a limited time, we're giving 10% off to KLZ listeners. Just use the promo code KLZ.
SPEAKER 07 :
The best export we have is Common Sense. You're listening to Rush to Reason.
SPEAKER 03 :
All right, somebody asked again, what was that website to the last guest we had on? It's unretire.io. Not .com, but unretire.io. And it's a website. putting retirees, people that have left the workforce but want to get back into it, still have a skill to offer, like she said, accounting, things along those lines, and we'll pair you up with other projects that are out there where there's some help needed for a particular job, service, amount of time, whatever the case may be. So, again, you can go check that out, unretire.io. I will put that link in our notes so you can actually find that in our show notes a little later this evening as well. And I'll have it. But anyways, yes, that's what that's for. So somebody actually texted and might have even just caught the tail end of that. That was Risa Raya. Risa Ryan. She was the CEO and founder of the Unretire group. And that's where that Unretire.io website actually comes from. All right. In other news, I started the show today talking about Democrats and just how scummy they actually are. And yes, I meant that in that in those words. They are now trying to figure out a way. to dismantle Tabor, which we talk about a lot. For those of you maybe that are new to our area or to the state, Tabor is the Taxpayer Bill of Rights. It was an amendment to the Constitution that was done, oh gosh, 1992, I want to say, Charlie, roughly, early 90s. Don't quote me on that, but I believe early 90s. It's been around for a while now. And it was designed as a way to keep government in check and not allow overspending by the government. In other words, TABOR only allows a certain amount of increase to the budget on an annual basis based upon inflation and population. That's it in a nutshell. Am I explaining that clear enough, Charlie? That's essentially what it does. Now, I realize there's some other... idiosyncrasies to it but in by and large that's what it does in fact that's why in colorado those of you that are new to our state and maybe you've registered your vehicle when you got here hopefully when you see the endless amount of fees that are on your license plate registration that is to bypass tabor that's why they're called fees they are taxes trust me they're taxes But they call them a fee, and they structure it in such a way that it's a quote-unquote fee. And because they structure it as a fee, even though literally it's a tax, and yes, that's been challenged in the courts, and the judges still come back because they're Democrat judges, and they say that, no, it's a fee, it's not a tax, and therefore it's not applicable to Tabor in Colorado. So, given everything I just said, We now have some folks down at the Golden Dome. It's why it's so important for our side of the aisle to have a seat at the table down at our legislature, which we don't right now. We are sorely outnumbered. And that's a whole other conversation. Andy and I will talk a little bit about that tomorrow. But the reality is we've got to get back on track. There's been a leadership change in the Colorado GOP. And we've got to get back on track when it comes to writing things again, if you would, and at least getting a seat at the table because there are – Some Democrat lawmakers, there is a bill down there that basically wants to invalidate and challenge Tabor. So there's an article in the Colorado Sun today talking about how we as taxpayers could very well be on the hook for paying for both sides of litigation in regards to Tabor. For example, this legislature that do this would challenge this bill. legally with our money and yet the attorney general who has vowed because it's law he has vowed even though he doesn't like tabor he would defend tabor ironically he's also on the payroll on our payroll as taxpayers as well so we essentially as taxpayers would be flipping the bill to not only defend tabor but go against tabor as well how ironically These are the nutjobs. These are the knuckleheads. These are the criminals that we have down at the state legislature that are trying to take your money out of your pocket. I call them criminals because they're going to steal money out of your pocket. They're thieves. And that's what they're trying to do. It's thievdom at its best. They're trying to figure out a way to tax you more, steal more of your money, unlawfully, by defeating Tabor. And I'm using those words on purpose because that's what they're doing. They're going to criminally enact and defeat Tabor so they can take more money out of your pocket. Even though they know it's against the law, even though they know that there's nothing unconstitutional about Tabor. Trust me, these people know that. But they don't care. I don't know how many times I've said this. They don't care what the Constitution says, locally, in the state, or nationally. They don't care what it says. They don't believe in it. Most of these people don't even believe in our national constitution. So they don't care that it's there. They want to see it gone. It's House Joint Resolution 1023. If it passes as expected, the General Assembly's nonpartisan, and laugh at that, by the way, Office of Legislative Legal Services would likely hire a group of attorneys to file a lawsuit against Tabor. By the way, this has happened before, unsuccessfully. Cost tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars when it was all said and done of taxpayer dollars. In one case, I believe the litigation took about 10 years, not a year, 10 years to litigate, all the while we as taxpayers paying that fee, meaning the only people getting rich in this case are lawyers. Keep that in mind. Now, these representatives down at our statehouse are telling everybody or trying to make everybody believe that, oh, they think they could get this done pro bono. No, you're not. No, you're not. Sean Camacho, by the way, he is a Denver Democrat. He is the lead sponsor of this. Surprising. Surprising. Sanctuary City, Denver. He's a Denver Democrat, probably is in the same back pocket that Mike Johnson is in with a lot of things that he does. And these are individuals that would love to see Tabor go away. Why? Because Tabor limits how much money they get to spend. And by the way, Sean, you should be ashamed of yourself because you know darn good and well this is an illegal thing to do. You're going to do it anyways because you're a thief and you want to steal money from the taxpayers. I'm going to call like it is, guys. No one else on air will, but I will. I'll call these guys what they are. They're thieves. They don't care what Tabor says. They don't care what the will of the people was back in 1992. By the way, Tabor has been tried to be repealed and or had workarounds done to it over the years, almost every single voting season. And I'm not exaggerating when I say that. And ironically, in Colorado, even though we are very socially liberal, fiscally speaking, they shoot these down all the time. Now, what I don't understand is they shoot them down, but then vote in the same knuckleheads that will vote for this crap. or that will initiate this crap. I don't get our voters. Dumbest people on the planet. Fiscally, they'll vote in favor of anything that is fiscally responsible, keeps taxes lower and so on, but yet they'll vote in people like this, Sean Camacho, that will go ahead and go down this path. It's the dumbest thing ever. They're bipolar. It makes no sense. No sense. No sense. But they do it anyways. And this is the plan now, is to basically fight Tabor. By the way, the reason why they want to go down this path and do it this way is because they know they can't take this by petition gathering, signature gathering. That alone would be about $2 million. They know they don't have the money for that. And so they won't go down that path. And by the way, that's liable to get shot down anyway. So not only will they not do it because of the initial investment, trust me, they also know they won't do it because it'll get shot down. They'll get voted down. It won't get passed. And no matter how they word it, there'll be enough backlash against that where it won't pass. And they know that. So this is their end around. This is how they're going to work around Tabor is they're just going to try to go sue for it and have it dismantled that way. So when I say these guys are thieves, they are thieves. They are thieves. So Camacho, he defended the potential taxpayer burden of the lawsuit, saying it's the legislator's responsibility to ensure the state is following the law. We are, Sean. We are. The people spoke. They voted all the way back in 1992. This has been challenged, by the way, in the courts to see if it's constitutional or not. It hasn't been overturned yet. You know darn good and well everything I'm saying is right. You're a scumbag. You're trying to steal people's money anyways. You don't care. I would love to debate any of these people, by the way. It's really funny that none of them will ever call on the show, call into the show, ask to be on the show. None of them will ever call to defend their position. Not only on my show, but others. They won't do it. Why do you think that is, by the way? Those of you that are on the left, why do you think they'll never call in? Is it because I'm a mean, nasty guy that won't let them talk? Absolutely not. I'll let them talk. Defend yourself. Tell me why you think Tabor is unconstitutional. I'll give you reasons why it's not, of course. I'll give you reasons why it is constitutional. I'll go all the way back to 1992, which I was around for all of that. I remember how all this went down. And Sean probably wasn't here then. He's probably a transplant. I don't know that for sure. Somebody could look that up and tell me. Most likely he's a transplant. Most of our legislatures are, by the way. Very few are natives of Colorado. If you guys haven't noticed that, very few people running the government right now in Colorado are natives. About the only buddy that is that I can think of is Polis. The rest of them are transplants. And Polis, if you go back and look up all of his info, he had to change his name at one point. He wasn't a Polis growing up. That's his mother's maiden name. I can't remember what his real name is, but he went by something else growing up. And yes, he is a native of Colorado. How do I know that? Because my family and his family actually did some business back and forth when his family's card business was in SS Park. I know Jared's humble beginnings all the way back then. And Jared makes it sound like it was really humble. No, he took what was actually a pretty good business to start with and turned it into something much bigger to his credit. But he didn't start from scratch. He won't tell anybody that, but he didn't start from scratch. And again, I know more about Jared's history than probably Jared does. Because I was around when he was a young man. And our families did business together back in the day. So that's another story probably for another day. There might be a few other natives in the legislature, but I guarantee you there's not many. If there's any more than him, I'll be surprised. Almost every single person I ever go to look up has come here from somewhere else. I call them political grifters. They're politicians. They're grifters. They just go to a state where they know they can get a paycheck and then put their policies on that state at the same time. So I call them political grifters. And we have them on both sides of the aisle, by the way. I've talked about it on our side as well. We have them on our side also. But there's a lot on the other side. Trust me, we wouldn't be as blue as we are if that weren't the case. That's exactly what happens. These people come here. They get elected. They want to put their values and beliefs upon everybody else in the state. And they win. And they get enough backing and they make it happen. And that's what's probably... I'll look up Camacho during the break to find out where he's come from. I highly, highly doubt... He's from our area. I would be really hard-pressed to believe that he's actually from Colorado, but I'll check it during the break. Flesh Law coming up next. Kevin Flesh, who I talked about, by the way, in the last hour, talking about some of the red light camera tickets and so on. SPEAKER 19 :
Here's why you need personal injury attorney Kevin Flesch on your side. He understands the way the jury thinks. In the context of a personal injury case, you've been hurt by someone else's negligence. The idea is that you're going to try to recover so that you can get back to where you were just prior to that incident occurring. What that really means from a jurist's perspective is that you're going to be asking them to award you money. So when we talk about fairness, we're talking about six people that you don't know. Those six people view the evidence and make a unanimous decision that will decide what the fair value is. When you're the one who's hurt, you have a good idea of what you think it's worth. The question is, can you persuade those other individuals whom you don't know and were witnesses to believe that's what the case is worth? Kevin Flesch understands the way the jury thinks. SPEAKER 03 :
Okay, did a little bit of research on Sean. Didn't have a lot of time, of course. Looks like he was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado, although he spent a lot of time outside of the state. He was in the military for quite some time, was actually a military attorney. Smart young man, from what I can see. Although very confused, by the way, in his political beliefs, I would say, because in 2017 he switched from being a Republican to a Democrat, which is, by the way, probably the only reason he's been... voted in that particular area of Denver because you never would win there as a Republican. But I can tell you by the things that he is proposing and the things that he advances, I guess he pretty well knows who he is because he's a dyed-in-the-wool Democrat at this point because he's probably gone against everything he was raised against. Politically speaking, as far as that end of things is concerned, and I don't know what convinces someone to do something along those lines. I guess no different than somebody that was raised Democrat that becomes a Republican at some point in time. I really don't understand the switch, so... I will stand corrected that there is now Governor Polis and, I guess, Sean that are natives. Although, Sean, I mean, I don't want to say somebody's not a native when they've been here for a while, then they leave and they come back because they're still natives. I'm not taking anything away from those individuals. But has he been through everything in Colorado that a native that has, you know, politically speaking, been here that entire time? No. I'm not taking anything away from Sean in that light of things. But... He is sorely mistaken in regards to this whole Tabor thing, and I would like to know, and this is something I would ask Sean directly, who's paying him to do this? Who's funding this on his behalf? Not that I'm saying he's doing anything illegal with funding or anything like that, but there's always something. Guarantee, guarantee, he did not come up with this on his own. That he did not just wake up one morning and say, you know, I think Tabor is unconstitutional. Let's do something about that. Guaranteed, he did not do that on his own. Somebody either planted that seed, paid to plant that seed, funded his campaign to plant that seed. You see where I'm going with this? Somewhere, somehow, something's happened there because guaranteed that did not just come up out of his own free will. Guaranteed. Because he knows, like I, that it's definitely constitutional. But yet he's still going to go ahead and see what he can do on this end of things to spend your money and mine. Again, he's a thief. He's going to take your money and mine tax-wise, both sides of the aisle, or both sides, by the way, of this debate, for and against. He's going to take our money to go fight this battle. Ironic. At any rate. And by the way, he's a guy that's actually run for office a few times in Colorado, finally made it this last go around. There is a little bit out there on that. The one thing that's interesting about him that I always find is really interesting about politicians, and it's not that there's anything wrong with this, but most politicians, I think Charlie would agree with me on this, most politicians have a Wikipedia page. Something about where they grew up, what did they do, what are their beliefs, who did they marry, when did they get married, where did they go to school, blah, blah, blah. So most politicians have a Wikipedia page. And normally will come up in the first search of that person's name. So in this case, you can put in, you know, Sean Camacho, Democrat, Denver. And normally on the first page, you'll have a Wikipedia link of some kind. Most every single politician you look up will have one. Now, is it a problem when there's not? You just have to wonder why is there not. Now, the way Wikipedia works, too, for all of you listening is anybody can start a page for anybody. You can start it for yourself. I could start one for Charlie. Charlie could start one for me. I'm not going to. I don't need one. Charlie doesn't need one. But bottom line is you don't have to start your own. And that's why typically politicians, whether they want it or not, will have a Wikipedia page because people want to know who they are. And again, either they can start it, their campaign can start it, or somebody else will start it. And the other thing about Wikipedia that maybe most people don't know is, just because it's in Wikipedia doesn't mean it's the gospel. You, if you have your own Wikipedia page, need to be monitoring what's said, because there can be a lot of things put in there that aren't true. Lots of people can, there was a story out a while back about a guy that was a quote-unquote editor for Wikipedia. That's all he did, flaming liberal. Flaming liberal. And would even admit to the fact that, yeah, I put stuff up at times that wasn't even true. Didn't matter. Wikipedia would take anything. Am I right, Charlie, in that? It is not fact-checked. Until you challenge it, it is up on Wikipedia. So just because you read something on Wikipedia does not mean it's true. In a lot of cases, unless it's been fact-checked by the owner of or who that page is about, may not be true. So just something to remember. But I always find it weird that either somebody running for office or is in office, that there's no Wikipedia page dedicated to them. I always find that to be a little bit weird. Weird. And in Sean's case, I can go to I think it's top of the second page is finally something there about Wikipedia. But when you look at his Wikipedia page, there's nothing there other than it says he was elected to the House of Representatives in Colorado in 2024. That's it. That is it. There's nothing else there. Again, it's really strange that, A, it's not on the first listings. B, there's nothing there. it might as well be blank because it doesn't tell you anything about him whatsoever. I always find that a little bit weird. It's like, what are you hiding? Why is there not more here? You're a politician. Why is there not more information on that? So anyway, just a side note, be watching for that. I'll keep you guys updated as things come along when it comes to that and let you know how that thing ends up working out because it's our tax dollars, which shouldn't be getting wasted on Tabor, by the way, but... They will be in this case. Veteran windows and doors, again, 35% off, up to three windows. And if you go four or more, it's 40% off with free labor on either ones of those. Just talk to Dave today. Welcome to the Flatline with your host, Rick Hughes. For the next 30 minutes, you'll be inspired, motivated, educated, but never manipulated. Now, your host, Rick Hughes.
SPEAKER 02 :
Good morning and welcome to the Flatline. I'm your host, Rick Hughes, and for the next few minutes, please stick around. It'll be a short time, just about 27 minutes of motivation, inspiration, some education. And we always do this without any manipulation, which means we don't con people. We're not trying to get money. We're not trying to sell you anything. We're just offering to give you some accurate information. Hopefully, the information will help you verify and identify the plan of God for your life And you can orient and adjust to the plan if you'd like to do so. We've been on the air now for almost 13 years with the Flatline. It's been amazing to see how God has graced us out, provided for our needs. and lets us continue to broadcast in your area. Thank you for listening. If you ever fail to get the show on some particular Sunday, if something happens and it doesn't play, let us know. Go to our website, rickhughesministries.org and shoot us an email. We'll figure out what happened because sometimes they do have mistakes at radio stations and sometimes things don't play as they should. But thank you for listening. Today we want to talk about something that's very critical. I constantly hear people tell me, I prayed about it. When they're faced with a big decision like a job or even a marriage or a school or something they're going to do, they say, I prayed about it. And I'm thinking to myself, okay, good deal. You prayed about it. But what exactly does that mean? That just seems to be a catch-all term today. We pray for you. Our prayers and thoughts go out to you. Nobody really understands the mechanics involved in that, and sometimes it's just a cliche. So what I want to talk to you today is about prayer and why sometimes your prayers may not be answered. That's right. Every prayer that is uttered is not always answered, and you may be in that situation. And so why would prayers not be answered? Let's start off with a verse that's very critical. And first of all, is it legitimate to pray? And the answer is certainly yes. The Bible says we should pray without ceasing. And if you are a believer in Jesus Christ, you have instant long distance terrestrial access to the heavenly throne of God. You have it. if you dial the right number, so to say. But if you don't dial the right number, your call is not going to go through. In our state, they're adding a new area code, and I've been told that if you don't dial the right area code, your call will not go through. And so anyhow, let's talk about this. Why would my prayer not get answered? Or why would my prayer not get to the throne room of God? Because some people say, well, I thought every prayer went straight to God. No, they do not. First of all, in Proverbs 128, the Bible says, then they shall call on me, but I will not answer. They shall seek me early, but they shall not find me. Now there's nothing more devastating to a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ than praying for an answer and then not getting any response. I guess it's sort of like being on an island and Not having anyone come to your rescue, you're stuck there. I think we all saw that movie where Tom Hanks was stuck on that island and had a relationship with a volleyball. Wilson, I think he called it, and nobody came to rescue him. Of course, you and I know that the Holy Spirit plays a major role in our prayers and whether they get answered or whether they don't get answered. Listen to what Romans 8.26 says about the Holy Spirit's ministry to me in prayer. Romans 8.26, likewise, the Holy Spirit, the Spirit says, also helpeth our infirmities, for we know not what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. The Greek word for groanings is stenagmos. Stenagmos is the Greek word and it means cries. our request. So when we go to the Father and we pray, if we want to have our prayers answered, it's imperative that the Holy Spirit be involved in those prayers. In Acts 7.34, that word groaning is used where It is written, I have seen and I've heard the affliction of my people, which is in Egypt, and I've heard their groanings. Same words, denagmos. And I have come down to deliver them, and now I will send you to Egypt. Groanings, their cries, their appeals to be answered. That's what the Holy Spirit does. He takes our prayers to the Father with our desperate plea or a desperate cry to answer. If our prayers are going to be effective, and hopefully your prayers are effective, especially if you're praying for me, I'd like for them to be effective, then we have to follow protocol. And protocol simply means you have to do the right thing in the right way. Because the right thing done in the wrong way is wrong. a right thing done in the right way is right so if you do a right thing in the right way at the right time then it's always right so there is a wrong way to pray and this is seen in psalm 66 18 if i regard iniquity in my heart the lord will not hear me what does that mean it means that sin blocks the ministry of the holy spirit in or during my prayers so let's go back to a basic bible doctrine that we should all understand which is the filling of the holy spirit we have problem solving devices one two and three and four and five six seven eight nine ten in the flat line of your soul Problem solving device number one is the rebound process where it says, if I confess my sin, he's faithful and just to forgive me and cleanse me from all unrighteousness. Now, If I have sin in my life, the Bible tells me that I've got a problem, that I have quenched or I have grieved the Holy Spirit because sin blocks the ministry of the Holy Spirit during my time of prayer. So what sin? Are we talking about drunkenness? Are we talking about fornication? Are we talking about cursing? What are we talking about? Well, let's look at a sin that you might not have thought of. This is a sin that slides by a lot, and people don't really think about it very much. Are you listening? 2 Peter 3.18, grow, and that's a command, that's not a request, grow in the grace and the knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. So We are commanded to grow. Here's another verse, 2 Timothy 2.15. Study, and by the way, this is how we grow. Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed. rightly dividing the word of truth. Both the word grow and the word study are verbs, and they are both in the imperative mood in the Greek New Testament, which means this is a command, this is not a request. Both of these are divine mandates for the believer in Jesus Christ to grow spiritually by studying God's word. Now, what does that mean exactly? Hosea 4.6 talks of national discipline on God's people because they rejected knowledge. The objective of growing and studying is to get knowledge. We call it the Fantastic Four, wisdom, knowledge, discernment, and understanding. The objective of growing is to gain knowledge. And listen to Hosea 4, 6, the sin of rejecting knowledge. My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Hosea 4, 6, national discipline coming on the nation Israel. Because you rejected knowledge, the verse goes on to say, I will reject you, that you will no longer be a priest to me, seeing you forgot the law of your God, and I will also forget your children. Uh-oh. That's a little bit of a warning. When our Lord Jesus Christ was carrying his cross and Simon of Cyrene had to pick it up for him and carry it on up to Golgotha, you remember what the Lord told the thief, today you'll be with me in paradise, and you remember what the Roman centurion said, surely this is the Son of God, but do you remember what Jesus said to the women who were mourning and wailing as he went down the street, all beaten and scourged and just barely even walking, not able to carry the burden of the cross. He looked at them and said, don't weep for me, weep for yourselves and what's coming and weep for your children and pray that you don't have children. You see, national discipline on a nation is a horrible thing, and in 70 AD, Jerusalem was completely destroyed by the Roman invasion of Titus. And if you put that into perspective today, I personally believe the United States of America is at a serious crossroads in history. And you've heard me say before, as goes your spiritual life, so goes the future of your nation. and what is the problem we have forgot the law of our god we have put him in third place fourth place fifth place we no longer can even talk about god or even post the ten commandments in the public square it's offensive to someone and that is the most ludicrous crazy thing i've ever heard in my life so we don't want knowledge we don't want the knowledge of god we don't want people to be exposed to the knowledge of god What did the verse say? My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. It is a sin to reject the knowledge of God. Proverbs 1.22 gives another divine warning to those who fail to learn and understand the plan of God. Here it is, verse 1.22 in Proverbs. How long will you simple ones love simplicity? And how long will the scoffer delight in his scoffing? And how long will fools hate knowledge? What's wrong with knowledge? It is the plan of God. It is understanding the protocol plan of God. It's coming to do exactly what the Bible says. Jeremiah 9, 24, let the one that glories glory in this. that he understands me and he knows me. You can't understand God without having a knowledge of God. If you don't understand that he's sovereignty, righteousness, justice, love, eternal life, immutability, omnipotence, omniscience, omnipresence, and if you don't understand some of those things, how can you love a God you don't even understand? The question you must answer this morning on this radio show is, are your prayers being hindered because you are sinning by not learning and understanding God's plan for your life. Are you just going through the ritual without any reality to it? You know, the nod to God crowd, the casual Christian crowd. Is that you? Because if you're not taking time to actually learn the Word of God and understand the mechanics and the procedures and the principles that are taught in the Word of God, then at best, you're just a casual Christian. the nod to God crowd, the Sunday morning guy. And that doesn't cut it as far as your spiritual life goes. How much about your God do you actually understand? That's the question. And how can you worship a God that you don't understand? So in the Bible verse in Jeremiah says he's looking for someone that understands him and knows him. The only way you're ever going to understand God is to study and grow and do what Jesus said, take my yoke upon you and learn of me. Learn of me. My yoke is easy. My burden is light. Learn, study, grow. Listen, folks, you're not going to grow with 30 minutes on Sunday morning and 30 minutes on Sunday night and maybe 15 minutes on Wednesday night before the chicken dinner. You're not going to grow that way. If you sent a kid to the first grade for an hour and 15 minutes a week, he'd never get out of the first grade. And many Christians don't study God's Word. They don't even read the Bible. They don't even bring a Bible to church. It's ridiculous. And unless you have a Bible that you can study, and unless you're under what I call a well-qualified pastor, not a cruise ship director, a well-qualified pastor who's going to study it himself, and then teach it to you, and you're never going to grow. It's imperative that you understand that. It's not a text. I mean, it's not a novel. You're not going to read through it and grow spiritually. I'm glad you read the Bible, and I'm glad people have. I read the Bible in a year. That's wonderful, but that's not how you grow. You grow by sitting under a person who has a communication gift called the poimen kai didaskalos in Ephesians, the pastor and teacher. And you listen to him break the bread open and make you rich. Make you rich, give you a treasure. The word for treasure in the Greek New Testament is a thesaurus. It's a word treasure. When you have a word treasure in your soul, it affects the way you think. It brings you to the mind of Christ so that you begin to think divine viewpoint. And you begin to fulfill Romans 12, 1 through 3. Stop thinking of yourself in terms of arrogance beyond what you should think, but think in terms of humility. As God has assigned to each one of us a standard of thinking from his word. understanding, wisdom, insight, knowledge from his word. It's critical. There's one difference between knowing God and understanding God, a big difference. And this may be one reason your prayers are not being answered and they're not effective. You may have sinned by ignoring the word of God and ignoring the scriptures and not studying consistently. You say, well, I do a morning devotion every morning. Really? That's wonderful. I'm proud of you. But a 15-minute devotion is not really going to cut it as far as you growing. That's kind of like squirting a little ether in your carburetor trying to jumpstart it on a cold morning. You know, we don't even hardly have any pastors today that are willing to study and teach anymore. There's so many demands on the pastors for them to visit and call on folks and shake folks' hands and pay attention to folks that the pastor doesn't have time to study. When you find good men who have the gift of pastor-teacher, who are willing to sit down and study every day before they get up and try to teach you, who go line upon line, word upon word, verse upon verse. We call it the ICE technique. I-C-E. Isogogical, categorical, exegetical. Go in and study the word, what it meant then, what it means today. develop the categories within the passage and exegete the passage line upon line, word upon word, dot upon dot. It's all important in the word of God. When you can do that, when you can sit at home under a pastor, if you're not at church, well, you can Maybe you can get a DVD or an MP3 or a cassette or something, and each morning or each evening put it in and get your Bible and get a notebook and grow and study and learn. I've been doing this for 50-plus years, and the more I study, the two things I realize, the more I don't know, and I've learned that Scripture is layered. So once I go through a passage and understand the surface layer, if I go back through it again, I see something underneath the surface that I didn't see the first time. And sometimes it's many layers deep. But there's need for you to study and grow so that you become a mature believer. That's what the whole process is about. So that you begin to replicate the thinking of Christ. so that you begin to reproduce the life of Christ, so that when people see you, they see Christ in you. That's the whole thing, and that's what you must do, and that comes by renovating your thought process, renovating your thinking, letting the mind be in you that was also in Christ Jesus. this is one reason why prayers are not answered why prayers are not effective because you ignore the mandate to study and grow spiritually and it's a battle folks i understand i mean i see it in my own family and the distractions that come along I can promise you this. If you decide in your life that you're going to set aside an hour a day for study of the scripture under a pastor, I promise you, you will be tested in every way you can imagine by the enemy himself, by the cosmic system, the world, the flesh, whatever. First of all, you might not even be able to concentrate for an hour. And secondly, if you decide you're going to do this, you will find all sorts of distractions. You may get job opportunities you never had. You may get wealth offered to you you never saw. Anything to keep you out of the Word of God. Because if there's one thing Satan doesn't want, it's another effective warrior for the Lord Jesus Christ taking the high ground and representing the life of Christ to a dying world. He doesn't want you to do that. So he will try to hinder your advance. Here's another reason your prayers might not be answered. You are not filled with the Holy Spirit. You have unconfessed sin in your life. You've quenched the Holy Spirit. Another reason is you rejected the Word of God. You didn't spend time studying the Word of God. Another reason is you failed to keep his mandates. What do I mean? 1 John 3, 22. And whatever we ask, we receive of him because we keep his mandates firmly. and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. Did you hear that? 1 John 3, 22, whatever we ask, we receive because we keep his mandates and do the things that are pleasing in his sight. God expects you to be obedient and God will bless you as a result of that. One reason your prayers might not be answered is malfunction in your marriage. 1 Peter 3, 7. Likewise, you husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge. There it is. Gnosis, the Greek word, epinosis, full knowledge. This is wisdom, discernment, insight, and understanding. Dwell with them according to knowledge. How do you get knowledge? Study, learn, grow. And the verse goes on to say, giving honor unto the wife as unto the weaker vessel and being heirs together of the grace of life so that your prayers may not be hindered. Marital discourse, malfunction in marriage can hinder your prayers. If you and your spouse, husband or wife are arguing or bickering, if you're not on the same page, if you're frustrated, well, your prayers are not gonna be answered because that is a sin. And it's looking to the husbands to solve the problem here. You husbands dwell with them according to knowledge, according to what the scripture says. Another reason your prayer might not get answered is the wrong motivation for praying. Maybe you're praying for something you don't need or you're praying for something that's absolutely ridiculous. James 4.3, you ask and you do not receive because you ask amiss so that you can consume it upon your lust. I'm just going to tell you right now, if you're praying to win the lottery, you're wasting your breath. You're like, what, what? You're wasting your breath. You know, you're thinking that if you could just win the lottery, you see them on TV, you see this guy won a million, this guy won 22 million, this guy won 100 million. Oh, look how happy they're going to be. No, no. The only thing money will do is give you the ability to be miserable in a different part of town. That's all. So don't be praying to win the lottery. That prayer is probably not going to be answered unless it's very unusual. And that means that God may want to take it all and use it for his glory, not for yours. And in that case, you're probably saying, well, I would give God 10%. Oh, whoopee doo. A big gracious person you are. Listen, don't pray to win the lottery, false motivation. And don't be praying, well, you know, if I could just have a new car, I'd be happy. If I could just have a new home, I'd be happy. You can be happy right where you are if you're content. That's a wonderful thing because contentment gives you the capacity to enjoy life as you are. Another reason your prayer might not be answered is malfunction of faith rest drill. Mark 11, 24. Therefore, I say unto you, whatever things you desire when you pray, believe it that you may receive them and you will have them. Believe it. That's faith. Faith rest drill. Standing on the promises of God. And God has over 7,000 promises in the Bible for you. If you can't claim those promises, you can't believe them. Do you even know any? we have a book called biblical promises and principles we'll be glad to send you if you don't have one let us know but many of those promises are categorized in that book for you but you've got to know the promises of God so you can claim them Another reason prayer might not be answered is the improper prayer procedure, praying in the wrong way. For example, nowhere in the Bible are you told to pray to Jesus. Prayers are to be addressed to the Father. Matthew 6, 9, after this manner, therefore, Jesus our Lord said, pray like this, our Father, which art in heaven. And we are to pray in the name of Jesus, John 15, 16. You have not chosen me, but I have chosen you and ordained you that you should go and bring forth fruit and that your fruit should remain, that whatsoever you ask of the Father in my name, he may give unto you. So we're authorized to go to the Father in the name of the Son. That's a legitimate thing, that he may give it to you. Now, we also learn something else. We also learn that there can be a problem in our life when we pray the wrong prayers, when we pray the wrong reason or the wrong way or pray the wrong prayer. And so there's a prayer called an imprecatory prayer. An imprecatory prayer is praying for the destruction of your enemy. And some people get mad at certain people and want to pray for those people to be harmed or for god to get even with them don't do that it's not a way to pray we get mighty impatient when god's justice doesn't happen fast enough for us sometimes so it's a test it can come from a person or a system but we have to be very careful not to allow ourselves to get ahead of god And so we must not be involved in hypersensitivity and arrogance because we make enemies of arrogance. We fight against impulsive arrogance and self-righteousness. Arrogance will utterly destroy any effective prayer life you may have. So there is a legitimate prayer for asking for protection from the enemy. Psalm 54, 1 through 5. Save me, O God, by your name. Vindicate me by your might. Hear my prayer, O God, and listen to the words of my mouth, because arrogant foes are attacking me. Ruthless people are trying to kill me. People are without regard for you. Surely, God, you are my helper. You are the one who sustains me. Let evil recoil on those who slander me. In your faithfulness, destroy them. Psalm 54, 1 through 5. and it's okay to pray for the enemy to be destroyed. General Patton taught us that in World War II. A lot more to say. Hope I'm making sense. I pray it's making sense. Come back next Sunday, same time, same place, and you'll learn more. Until then, this is your host, Rick Hughes, saying thank you for listening to The Flatline.

And thank you to the Harris family for their gold sponsorship of the show. The show. Kim buys all of her airtime. So she deeply appreciates everyone who helps sponsor the show and and keep these ideas out there. Thank you to Hooters Restaurant for their sponsorship. There are five locations, Loveland, Aurora, Lone Tree, Westminster, and Colorado Springs. They have great lunch specials Monday through Friday for dine-in or to-go. Wednesdays are wings days, so make sure you can buy 20 wings and get an additional 10 for free. Offers to-go or dine-in. So a great place to get together with your friends to watch your favorite sports teams. If you don't know, the national championship game between Houston and Florida will be tonight. So good place to get some wings to watch that. I'm still a little salty that Duke fell apart the way that they did. But some pretty cool headlines around Florida and specifically Houston, Houston's head coach. Some of the last words from his dad were that he should stay involved with with college basketball. He was thinking about going to the NBA. So kind of cool. He stuck around with college basketball. And sure enough, he's guided his team to a national championship. So sports can be. Pretty beautiful thing. So we'll talk a little bit more about sports here in a minute. But I wanted to get over to the word of the day first, since later this hour we will have Representative Max Brooks in to talk about some of the goings on happening in the state house. So the word of the day was Diablerie. D-I-A-B-L-E-R-I-E. That's a noun. It means reckless mischief or a charismatic wildness. So for charismatic wildness, kind of like the Diablerie of a good actor, for instance. But the reckless mischief, the Diablerie going on at the state house is... more than concerning, shall we say. So they're doing things that just go beyond reckless, ideologically encumbering, pushing their ideology at all costs, regardless of what's happening to the taxpayer either. Also wanted to, for the quote of the day, had to go to a tried and true, went to James Madison. He was born March 16th, 1751 to June 28th, 1836. He, of course, was an American statesman, diplomat and founding father. Happened to be the fourth president of the United States from 1809 to 1817. We probably all know him more so as the father of the Constitution for his pivotal role in drafting and promoting the Constitution of the United States. Although he started out initially being against a Bill of Rights, he ended up becoming a big proponent for them, especially when it came to getting the Constitution passed. He realized the Bill of Rights was going to help get that passed and change the way he thought, which I think is a good lesson to all of us that sometimes you can grow and you can learn. But he said... A popular government without popular information or the means of acquiring it is but a prologue to a farce or a tragedy, or perhaps both. Knowledge will forever govern ignorance. And a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives. Again, pretty poignant quote there, especially when it comes to the freedom of press and the freedom of speech. But again, the beautiful thing about the way the Founding Fathers wrote, especially in this time period, is while it may apply to one thing in particular, the wisdom that they have is unparalleled. Again, The without information or the means of acquiring it is but a prologue to farce or tragedy or perhaps even both. And we'll talk to Representative Brooks a little bit later here about the silencing of debate that happened on Friday. Again, the Democrats dropped quite a few bills and then limited the debate on those. And again, is that. Purposeful, is that just because they're mismanaging the schedule? Is there more nefarious means at work or perhaps all of the above all at once? But again, knowledge will forever govern ignorance. That's just a deep quote of if you want to avoid being ignorant, always be seeking out knowledge. And again, that having that agency within yourself, no one should ever be able to take that away. So again, we mentioned it, wanted to come back to another. I love sports. They're just a way to sometimes show virtue. And one of the big happenings this weekend was Alex Ovechkin passed Wayne Gretzky for the all-time NHL goal scorer over the weekend. And just, you know, some pretty classy things all around. Wayne Gretzky had shown up to the game on Saturday and Alex Ovechkin scored two goals to tie him. And at the end of the game, Ovechkin's team was up by so much, they'll sometimes do what they call the other team pulled the goalies. There was an empty net. And Ovechkin's coach turned to him and was going to put him in, presumably to try and beat Gretzky's record that night. And Ovechkin sat down on the bench. And after the game, they had a press conference. And Ovechkin said, no, I don't want to score an empty netter to beat the all-time goal scorer. I want to do it against a goaltender. So pretty classy. He ended up doing it the very next day yesterday. So a pretty cool ceremony. But it was kind of funny because at that same press conference on Saturday when he said he didn't want to do it against an empty net, Wayne Gretzky quipped. He's like, well, I never passed up an open net. So that was kind of funny. Ironically, that very same game, a rookie ended up scoring an empty net goal. And Gretzky said only 894 to go until you catch up to Ovechkin. So pretty cool, classy story. Again, Gretzky acknowledged that when he beat Gordie Howe's all-time goal record, when he broke it, Gordie Howe was there. Just a tradition of being a good sport, of being a good steward of the game. So do you have any thoughts, Producer Joe? No.
SPEAKER 12 :
No, that's actually a really funny story. And I like just that there's sportsmanship amongst all ends with it. It's very neat.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah, you know, and that's got to be one. It's I mean, when you hold a record, you kind of one, you know, it's probably going to get broken at some point. Although I do have to say Gretzky's all time points record where that's assists plus goals is looks nigh untouchable. He's up over 1,000 points over the next closest, and Ovechkin isn't even in the top 10. But when you have a record like that, it's probably going to get broken. But to be there when it happens, especially with these hyper-competitive athletes, I mean, I don't think we truly understand how competitive they are to compete the way that they do. To have their record broken is pretty classy to be there and to be a part of that moment and to pass that on. Speaking of records, also, the Yukon women actually won last night. And you might call it an upset. They were the lower seed. So Gino, are you? I always mispronounce his name. Are you Rema? pretty legendary coach over there at UConn. As we know, the UConn women won four in a row back, I think that ended in like 2016. And he was contemplating retiring. He ended up not retiring, lost a national championship in 2022. And he became the oldest head coach in the men's or the women's to win a national championship. He just credited the fact that he wanted to stay with it. He wanted to stick with it. And, you know, a lot of people say he should have rode the high and gone out on a gone out on a high point after winning all those championships in a row and To his credit, he stuck around one. And another interesting water cooler tidbit, not only is he now, UConn now has the oldest head coach in women's, but also Jim Calhoun, the UConn coach, is the oldest men's coach to win a national championship. So UConn having some pretty good times there with the national championships. So again, just kind of a fun one there. One more headline, and before we go to break and hear from some more of our sponsors, this one is a little closer to home. The FPC firearms, I'll look that up at the break. But a lawsuit here in Colorado, pretty pivotal one going on, especially when it comes down to Colorado's gun and ammo tax. There's now a lawsuit out there to say, Strike down this gun and gun and ammo tax. And it's very interesting. In one of the few missteps that Governor Polis has made in a speech, he said the following, and I quote, when you tax something, you penalize it. And there's things you actually want to penalize in society. So he said this in a 2021 speech. So in this lawsuit, they're asking the court to recognize that a tax is what it is, an unconstitutional penalty on constitutionally protected conduct. So again, the logic is that this gun and ammo tax is disincentivizing a constitutionally protected right. So the fact that... They're kind of using the governor's own words against them. Pretty pivotal. Also... The logic also extends beyond that. At this point, it's like 6.5%, I believe, is what was passed. But the point the lawsuit makes is, hey, what's going to stop a state from imposing a 50% or even 100% tax on an excise tax on a constitutionally protected right? So, again, pretty pivotal. It should be. Again, when you look at it in Bruin... The government bears the burden of justifying any modern restriction on Second Amendment protected rights by pointing to relevant historical traditions. So this gun and ammo excise tax by the states doesn't meet that that principle. So. we'll be watching that lawsuit with a lot of fervor because it carries a lot of implications, should be pretty cut and dry. Again, Colorado, California, we seem to be the leaders on trying to do things, especially when it goes against constitutionally protected rights. So hoping that we can prove that Colorado's tax can't survive constitutional scrutiny and looking forward to to seeing how the justices rule on that. But a lot of what we get to talk about wouldn't happen without good sponsors of the show, and one of those sponsors is Roger Mangan.

I know the last time I was on the show, we got to talk to Medal of Honor recipient Drew Dix, and his citation was pretty inspiring. Also joining us on the line, we have Representative Max Brooks. He's the representative of House District 45, which is in Douglas County and covers Castle Rock and some of South Parker. So welcome, Representative Brooks. Good morning, Alan. How are you, sir? Doing pretty good. You know, it's kind of interesting because there's a whole lot going on down at the state capitol. So glad we can pick your brain about a little bit of the goings on happening. And, you know, in preparing for the show, we had a couple of things that we'll talk about in the third and fourth segment. And then Friday and yesterday happened. So that definitely helped us fill up some more of the show as well.
SPEAKER 18 :
Yeah, I would like to think that when you and I coordinated originally booking the show for today, that we just did not see, nor did we not anticipate in any way whatsoever, how Friday and then yesterday, yes, Sunday, yesterday, at the state capitol would unfold. Yeah. To be fair, I believe James Madison would be ashamed because your word of the day is, I consider any definition that would include the word mischief, mischief seems to me to be somewhat good-natured. And I'm sorry, Alan, this was certainly not. So we are beyond diablery into just straight villainry, I believe.
SPEAKER 10 :
I completely agree. And, you know, whether it's providence or coincidence, you know, I certainly believe in a higher power. It's kind of fortunate that we actually have a majority of the show to unpack what's going on and everything that that dropped last week. But let's maybe go over a little bit what happened on Friday. And, you know, for those that are deeply involved in politics, it's easy to talk about things such as like limiting debate and third reading. On Friday, they limited debate to two hours on three pretty controversial bills, one of which actually ended up passing yesterday. So that's Senate Bill 25-183. So that's the bill that the Senate proposed to basically enforce the Amendment 79 that the American voters voted on. where it's funding abortion services. Also, the House Bill 25-1309, so forces insurers to cover expensive gender-affirming procedures. House Bill 25-1312, which we will unpack in more detail, but that's the... transgender bill, a lot of very scary Orwellian stuff going on with that one. And then also Senate Bill 25-129, so blocking cooperation with out-of-state investigations into gender-affirming care and reproductive health, which again, reproductive health means ending pregnancies, right? Undermining interstate legal accountability. So can you maybe unpack how and what it looks like to limit debate to two hours on some four pretty controversial bills, four bills that would obviously inspire quite a bit of, I imagine, words from our Republican representatives.
SPEAKER 18 :
Yes, indeed. No matter how much you attempted to limit debate from our good Republican representatives, I can guarantee you this, we will always have words. So let me unpack how Friday happened. came to be. During the week, I don't know if it was probably Wednesday of last week, we received notice from our minority leader, Representative Rose Fuglisi, that the majority leader, Representative Monica Durant, has brought to her a negotiation of sorts, right? And that is that They're going to drop six total bills on Friday, and then the four of them you just mentioned. And they wanted us to agree to be done by, I forget, maybe 5 or 6 o'clock in the afternoon. The Democrats wanted to have their weekend. The Democrats didn't want to be tied up having to discuss these things because it's not about we the people. It's about if the policy. So they wanted to be able to wash their hands a la Pontius Pilate and just move on with their weekend and push through the insidious policy that they had been bringing forward. We said, no, thank you. The deal was that if we had agreed to wrap up by 5 or 6 o'clock, then we would not work on the weekends. I can't speak for everybody in the Republican caucus, nor would I. I wouldn't endeavor to, but I'll tell you, Alan, I pretty much cleared my calendar January 8th, May 7th, knowing that I was going to be working at the state capitol. So you want us to work on a Saturday? You want me to come in on Sunday? Let's go. You know, we're on a shot clock here. I understand that the downside is that the more time you give the majority party, the more sessions, if you work every Saturday and Sunday, you're really giving them an opportunity to pass more of their very bad, selfish, not constituent-driven, James Madison, the quote that you had given earlier about knowledge and understanding what it is that we're doing. It would have given them more time to drive even more policy through. But as one member of our leadership put it, we don't negotiate with terrorists. So we told them to very tightly pack sands into a very small container. So they came back and they said, fine, we're going to rule 14 you. Rule 14 is something that can happen on second reading, which was Friday, which means that debate will be limited. The rule 14 is actually to no less than one hour. That's how the rule is written. They decided to rule 14 us to limit debate on each item to two hours. so they did that and we did take every single bit of the two hours we ran amendments we argued and then we did something at the end where you have to pass at the end of second reading something called the reports of the committee of the whole which is the reports of the proceedings that had just occurred on the floor we call it cal for short WE THEN RAN AMENDMENTS IN OUR COW. WE BROUGHT AMENDMENTS BACK INTO THE COW THAT WE THOUGHT COULD HAVE THEM PASSED. I THINK THERE WERE ROUGHLY A DOZEN OF THEM. SO WE HAD ANOTHER HOUR OR SO OF COW DEBATE, COMMITTEE OF THE WHOLE DEBATE. SO WE WERE THERE FOR A GOOD BIT OF TIME. I THINK PROBABLY 9 O'CLOCK, IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY. You know, it still is very unsavory to bring forward the bills you mentioned, the four specifically you mentioned. They did want to bring forward a couple more, but we ended up, I believe, just working on those four. Some of the most difficult, morally corrupt, villainous, and just downright disgusting bills of the entire session, all on a Friday, and all limited to two hours each of debate. So... Yes, Alan, you can bet we had plenty of words. However, I will tell you that we conducted ourselves with a great sense of decorum, and we debated these on equal footing and did not ever turn it into something ugly, which did end up happening on Sunday at the hands of the Democrats.
SPEAKER 10 :
And that's an important point, because especially when you look at the court of public opinion, sometimes when you can kind of turn ugly, it can get turned against you, right? And it's one of those, how can you encourage people to follow the rule of law when you're unwilling to do it yourself? So that does put you in a pretty difficult scenario, especially when you talk about these bills. And for those of us that follow politics quite well, You know, they have a schedule of when they're supposed to drop bills, when they're supposed to give you time enough to read them, to really debate them. And especially as a representative, you know, the House of Representatives is supposed to be the people's house. That's where things are supposed to be deliberated even more so than the Senate. Right. Even, you know, by the original founding that we had, this is supposed to be where you're supposed to have an ability to really talk about the logic of things and have these deep discussions. And for them to do that on a Friday, to not schedule maybe even for next week, to give themselves adequate time to debate, to put these bills out there for public knowledge. Yeah. And disheartening is a word that comes to mind. It's maybe not the most precise word, Representative Brooks. But it just shows the nefarious nature of what they're doing when a schedule such as this is proposed. And then, again, it does not feel coincidental at all that Senate Bill 25-183, the Quote unquote coverage for pregnancy related services happened to have its final reading on Sunday at all.
SPEAKER 18 :
Yes. No, that that's that that's you're absolutely right. I mean, it is so many different avenues that the majority party could have chosen to take. And truly, the majority party, when you are the majority party. And I say that with a great sense of hope that one day Republicans shall reclaim that title ourselves. You have a great bit of power, a great bit of say in how the proceedings will develop. So to put all of these bills on one day and then to limit debate onto a Friday, It's just indefensible to say that they're trying to do the best work for Colorado. Everything about doing that on Friday and limiting debate, stacking up these bills, one on top of each other, asking us to be done by 6 o'clock, and then when we say no, they turn around and then rule 14, so we have to be done by a certain time. And then we did start an hour earlier. So all of it just says... We're pushing this through. There's nothing that you can do to stop us. And God help Colorado. And honestly, that is unfortunately the truth. That is why we need to make sure that we're backing very good candidates come 2026. And then, yes, to bring them in, to bring us back in on Sunday, 10 o'clock in the morning. And then we worked the very first one, as you just mentioned. Senate Bill 183, the official title, I believe, is coverage for pregnancy-related services, which is, it just does not describe really what this bill and the intent of it is, and that is to just further expand abortion services in Colorado. They like to call them averted births, but You know, the death cult can call them whatever they would like. It is abortion services that are paid for by tax dollars. We worked that first bill, Alan, for three hours, for three hours, which is funny to me in some ways because we had been limited on Friday in second reading to two hours. We get to Sunday where third reading, Each member of the House is only allowed to speak twice for a total of 10 minutes. If you go up one time and run your 10 minutes, that's fine. If you come up twice and only go two minutes each time, well, then you're done at four minutes. So we ended up running debates for over three hours, and that's when things started to turn very ugly after that because we got Rule 16'd. which means that the question is immediately called and no more debate on an item. They were done talking about it, and we were just getting warmed up.
SPEAKER 10 :
And it's not easy to imagine or it's not that hard to imagine why they would immediately want to silence debate. But let's unpack some of these words about 183 because they use a lot of stuff, family planning related services, the irony of you having to be enrolled in children's basic health plan in order to get an abortion. And again, I want to come back to this averted pregnancies bit. But Before we do, one of the great sponsors and longtime sponsors of the show for Kim Monson has been Karen Levine.

SPEAKER 10 :
And welcome back to the Kim Monson Show. This is Alan Thomas filling in for Kim Monson. Make sure and sign up for the weekly email newsletter where you can get a first look at all the upcoming guests as well as the most recent essays. Thank you for contributing to support the independent voice and exercise our right to the freedom of speech. On the line we have Representative Max Brooks. And it's kind of ironic that we're talking about the exercising our right to freedom of speech, especially with the shenanigans going on at the state house. And, you know, before break, we were talking about the Senate Bill 183. So coverage for pregnancy related services. I just wanted to read a little the blip that it has online, the legislative summary of it. And again, the irony and just the Orwellian doublespeak. to say that the bill expands the definition of family planning-related services to include abortion care. So, again, this idea that somehow you're helping with family planning by aborting kids is just unbelievably double. How do you have both? But then also— This idea, we're going to go back to they can't be pregnant women. It's got to be pregnant persons. You also have to be enrolled in the Children's Basic Health Plan. So we're going to kill kids, but you got to make sure you're signed up for the Children's Basic Health Plan in Medicaid, which, again, is taxpayer funded. But, you know, Representative Brooks, one of the one of the key things I wanted to highlight when it was in committee and you had mentioned this before the break, this idea of averted pregnancies, just this way of describing it in a different way, thinking that we won't understand what that is, but. It was sick and twisted to me that one of the logic used in averting a pregnancy was actually that we're going to be saving money by averting these pregnancies. I mean, that's a little eugenic for me to be talking about it this way. You know, it used to be safe, rare, and legal. Now we're talking about saving money. I mean, this is pretty twisted.
SPEAKER 18 :
Absolutely, you nailed it. Twisted and just absolutely disheartening, disgusting. Yes, Amendment 79 passed. The Democrats do this all the time. They will, what I call, misappropriate a motion. They will take a story, and then they will try to then appropriate it. Well, I can't say try. They actually successfully do it. They get everybody on their side to bite off on it, you know, the emotion of it, even though it is unrelated. Or they will just, you know, they'll just mention pieces that are not relevant to a specific bill. And this, in 79, you know, we heard many references to to just how this enshrined into the Constitution the choice. So a lot of their argument was about choice. Well, this wasn't about choice. This is about taxpayer-funded abortions. And I'll tell you, I would love to poll Every single person that voted yes for Amendment 79 and asked them, now that they've seen Step 2, which passed yesterday in Senate Bill 183, now that they've seen that, is this what they had in mind? Is that what you had in mind, Mr. and Mrs. Voter? when you cast your vote in favor of amendment 79 because i would be willing to bet alan that the answer is no that they were either misled thinking that this was simply to enshrine choice into the colorado constitution um or or or just outright outright lied to um yeah the other piece of this the democrats get up there and they talk about how old that you we are executing the will of The voters. It is our right. I couldn't keep a straight face during this piece when I heard them say it was their responsibility to carry out the Colorado Constitution. And I thought, well, gee, what about everything else when you have used either the Colorado Constitution or the United States Constitution as toilet paper? You're picking this as you're going to be staunch defenders of the Constitution now. Well, yay, that's fantastic. But let's consider that Amendment 79, what it did not do, it did not mandate the use of public funds. What it did was it removed the prohibition of the use of public funds. This is very much, in my mind, what the Democrats, unfortunately, are very good at, that they will take one step, take a half measure, to then crack the door open for them to then come barging through the door in the next legislative session. If you were not suspicious, you might say that this is an unintended consequence. If you understand that it was the intended consequence all along, then you just know better. This was a one-two step in order to have public-funded abortions and, as you mentioned, to save Colorado money. It's absolutely eugenics.
SPEAKER 10 :
And, you know, we've seen this in Canada. It's especially places in the U.K. where they have universal health care. It's not much farther saying we're going to save money by doing this before the elderly, the infirmed are getting doctor-assisted suicides because, again, the same sort of argument is made. Yeah. Before we move on, I do want to get over to 1312, so legal protections for transgender individuals. But Kim does make a point, and I forgot to do this, and I want to make sure and do this. The authors of Senate Bill 25183, again, that coverage for, quote, pregnancy-related services, taxpayer funding, again, like you said, take an inch, they'll grab a mile, now we're going to be paying for abortions. The authors on that were Robert Rodriguez, Lindsay Doherty, Lorena Garcia and Julie McCluskey. Again, like Representative Brooks said, yesterday it passed on a 38 to 21 vote. There were six excused, zero absent. Was that party line, Representative Brooks?
SPEAKER 18 :
Absolutely.
SPEAKER 10 :
So, again, it's pretty obvious what side fights for what. But, again, we're talking about Orwellian doublespeak and this House Bill 25-1312, so legal protection for transgender individuals. And, you know, Representative Brooks, I want to make sure we save – At least seven minutes, five, seven minutes here at the end of the show to get to this joint resolution talking about the Constitution of the Tabor. But before we go to break here, just wanted to maybe start from the back and work our way to the front on this 1312. Because Sections 8 and 9 define what den naming and misgendering are. Which, again, for those that don't know, it's when an individual who is confused – believes they are a different gender and they choose a new name, if you use their legal name, you are now deadnaming and misgendering. And this bill is saying that deadnaming and misgendering will be discriminatory acts in the Colorado Anti-Discrimination Act, and it will prohibit these discriminatory acts in places of public accommodation. So You know, Colorado Anti-Discrimination Act has not had a very popular run in the Supreme Court. We'll page Masterpiece Cake Shop and 303 Creative on those. And I mean, again, just just that alone should be pretty concerning to us. So we'll get a couple of thoughts here, Representative Brooks, and we'll go to break and then start wrapping this one up, too.
SPEAKER 18 :
OK, no, it's before. We could jump into 1312. It is worth noting that House Bill 1309 was heard first. And the reason that that's important is because of how our debate ended on 1309 set the scene then for zero debate. zero discussion for 1312 and then Senate Bill 129. The end of 1309, which is the protect access to jigger-affirming healthcare, 1309 was, it ended in absolute disaster. We had had our say, we were done, and then we as a caucus had basically turned over the wrap-up to the bill's sponsors. That is, typical right the bill sponsors usually have the final word so the bill sponsors and on that one is uh is reps in the house reps brown and rep to tone rep brown came up and and gave his bid and then rep to tone came up and GAVE A SPEECH THAT IN MY ESTIMATION REPTITONE HAD PROBABLY WROTE IT YEARS AGO AND WAS LOOKING FOR AN OPPORTUNITY TO JUST DELIVER THIS NOW. THIS WAS REPTITONE'S MOMENT TO DELIVER THE SPEECH THAT COMPARED REPUBLICANS TO NAZIS. BASICALLY CALLED US FEAR MONGERS AND NAZIS. AND WE OBVIOUSLY JUMPED UP, WE OPPOSED, OBJECTED, AND THEY SHUT DOWN DEBATE IMMEDIATELY. Representative Weinberg got up, did a very good job in representing the caucus and saying that, you know, we had been very respectful through debate and to go in that direction was uncalled for. And certainly he is right. Absolutely uncalled for. Breach of decorum and was just a real show of disrespect and just hyperbolic nonsense. So we got Rule 16 at that point, which immediately limited debate. We had to vote on 1309. That, Alan, meant that for House Bill 1312, legal protections for trans individuals, and then Senate Bill 129, the legally protected health care activity protections, that was, we were already under 16 rule 16 no debate whatsoever so for I think what people would would believe to be the worst piece of legislation of the day 1312 we had zero discussion in it whatsoever oh and by the way the gender dysphoric representative to tone after calling Republicans Nazis on the floor before the discussion on 1312 decided that Representative Titone needed to go get a haircut and zoomed in from the salon for the remainder of the afternoon, was not even present. There were roughly about 10 Democrats that were not even present in the chamber, had better things to do than work for Colorado that day. But Titone drops that bomb and then leaves the chamber to go get a haircut and then zooms in because you have to turn on your camera when you vote so we can see representative tone at a salon. It was just very distasteful, very disrespectful to Colorado voters. I don't care. I don't care who you are, what party. you deserve more than that, Alan. Absolutely deserve more.
SPEAKER 10 :
And it's very ironic when they drop things like Nazi and drop historical references like this and yet want to limit debate and want to limit the expression of ideas and limit the ability for people to hear from their representatives and for representatives to actually represent their districts. So You know, let's let's go to break and finish up with 1312 and and hopefully we'll get a quick rendition of the Tabor resolution and some of the budget deficit stuff. But these are very important bills and we can discuss these because of great sponsors such as Lorne Levy.
SPEAKER 04 :

Thank you all for contributing to support the independent voice and exercising the right to freedom. Joining us on the phone is Representative Max Brooks of House District 45. Again, some pretty big things happening over this weekend. And we haven't even really gotten enough time to even talk about some of the Tabor issues that are going on at the statehouse, trying to get taxpayer funding to get rid of the Taxpayers Bill of Rights. But let's get into it. House Bill 1312, again, this legal protections for transgender individuals. And Representative Zakai, I think I'm mispronouncing that, but Zakai said this, and this is a quote, because there was a lot of talk about not having stakeholder involvement in this bill. And the representative said, quote, but a well-stakeholdered bill does not need to be discussed with hate groups. And we don't ask someone passing civil rights legislation to go ask the KKK for their opinion, end quote. And again, when you get into comparing Republicans to Nazis, we're talking about a speech code here, a civil, the civil rights religion, this speech code forcing people to. to say things that are, one, just not true. This idea of dead naming and misgendering somebody, that somebody can choose a different name other than their legal name, and enforcing a speech code, and yet they want to somehow try and take the moral high ground and not claim that they are the KKK, or somebody akin to the historical Nazi regime, who I also believe did enforce speech codes. So your thoughts, Representative Brooks?
SPEAKER 18 :
No, you're absolutely right. I mean, that was that came out a committee that was in the Judiciary Committee. And that was Rep. Zokai was responding to Representative Caldwell, one of our fantastic caucus members, saying that he just did not feel like this had been discussed enough. And keep in mind. That discussion is not, again, it is it the policy, not we the people. Discussion is not their primary motivation here. Cramming through their own personal agenda is what the actual discussion is about, if that's what they want to call it. Representative Caldwell was taking exception to the fact that maybe parents had not been discussed. or not have been stakeholder. And then that is when Representative Zokai decided to basically liken parent groups to hate groups in the KKK. Don't forget, it was only, I believe, last session, if not the session before, that Representative DeHill, who fortunately is no longer in the House of Representatives, had said, quote unquote, that parents are the problem. I'm not exactly sure what terrible childhood she experienced, but she apparently felt that that meant that everybody must have experienced a terrible childhood and that parents were the problem. So the sooner that they're able to get parents out of the way, the better. 1312, if you remember, Alan. the chant from that parade in New York, we're coming for your children, this is very much that. That if, let's say, your seven-year-old son, biological male son, seven years old, and I'm just picking a number, comes to you and says, you know, Daddy, I think I'm a girl. And, you know, I have a teacher at school that has been helping me understand that I'm a girl. And you say, well, little Johnny, you know what, I'm not so sure that that's the case. You're actually a boy. And then that biological male son then goes back and tells the teacher, oh, geez, you know, my dad is saying that, no, I'm not the girl that I'm being told I should be. Guess what? Child protective services can now take your child away because now you have misgendered. If you have misgendered your child, even while trying to seek treatment, for their gender dysphoria. And keep in mind that by the age of 20 years old, many of these transitioners are looking to detransition because, gosh, here's a newsflash, teenagers often do confused and rash things. And when they realize that, no, they've grown out of this, they may have been taken away from the home already because God forbid you misgender somebody or call somebody by their given name.
SPEAKER 10 :
But we need to remember, Representative Brooks, science matters until it doesn't support a popular opinion, right? That's right.
SPEAKER 18 :
Weren't we all asked to follow the science? Well, that's a big thing. Follow the science. Follow the science during COVID. You know, I don't want to mirror mask, but I was told follow the science. Well, Now that we're here, I need a book about which science we're supposed to be following because it apparently changes given the argument for the policy they're trying to push.
SPEAKER 10 :
Well, it doesn't change, though. It's the science that supports the ideology that the left has. So if a scientific opinion does not support their policy, then that's not real science, right? But I do want to get back to something real quick, Representative Brooks, because it's very important. Sometimes it's easy to talk about parental rights and how they're being infringed. But again, the legislative summary of the bill, just listen to some of these words. So... deadnaming misgendering or threatening to publish material related to an individual's gender affirming health care services is a type of coercive control again coercive control and a court shall consider reports of coercive control when determining the allocation of parental responsibilities in accordance with the best interests of the child. So when we say that they are directly saying that parents do not have a say in how their child is raised, this is why we're using it. A court shall consider. They are considering this coercive control. This is now a discriminatory act. And they can use the Colorado Anti-Discrimination Act to go directly to parents and say, no, no, you don't know what your four year old wants to name himself. If he wants to name himself after some robo gobo character, you're going to have to abide by that now, parents, because we the state, we the state know how best to parent your children. And, you know, we only have a couple minutes here, but I want your last thoughts on this. Again, we weren't able to get to the House Joint Resolution 25-1023, something very important for the listeners to look up. Again, basically directing the Assembly Committee on Legal Services to file a lawsuit in the state, challenging the constitutionality of TABOR. Again, they're really interested in the Constitution of Tabor, Constitution when they can use it. But last thoughts here, Representative Brooks, on 1312.
SPEAKER 18 :
Well, they're coming for your children, and on Tabor, they're continuing to come for your money. For Tabor, that's your money. That's the taxpayer's money. It is the taxpayer bill of rights. But quote, unquote, from the Democrat chair of the Joint Budget Committee, Tabor is the reason we can't have nice things. That is the quote unquote from from Senator Bridges.
SPEAKER 10 :
And that's perfect.
SPEAKER 18 :
You have to wrap up. Yep. Ten seconds. That there were 13,000, 13,000 gender surgeries in 2020, 13,000 nationwide. That's against 51 million regular medical procedures across the country trying to legislate to a vast minority simply for the policy.
SPEAKER 10 :
And thank you, Representative Brooks. Keep up the great work there at the Statehouse. End of show quote from Abraham Lincoln. Character is like a tree and reputation like a shadow. The shadow is what we think of it. The tree is the real thing. So stay focused on truth. Today, be grateful. Read great books. Think good thoughts. Listen to beautiful music. Communicate and listen well. Live honestly and authentically. Strive for high ideals. And like Superman, stand for truth, justice, and the American way. You are not alone. God bless you and God bless America. And stay tuned for hour number two.
SPEAKER 06 :
Like a new moon rising fierce Through the rain and lightning Wandering out into this great unknown And I don't want no one to cry But tell them if I don't

SPEAKER 13 :
On an equal field in the battle of ideas, mistruths and misconceptions is getting us into a world of hurt.
SPEAKER 05 :
Is it freedom or is it force? Let's have a conversation.
SPEAKER 10 :
And welcome to the Kim Monson Show. I'm Alan Thomas. Excited to be guest hosting today while Kim is out traveling and visiting family. Thank you all for joining. You are each valued and treasured today. Strive for excellence. Take care of your heart, soul, mind, and body. Thank you, Producer Joe, for all your hard work. And, you know, the conversations are great. We probably need about four hours to discuss everything that the Democrats are doing. But if you miss the first hour, it'll be rebroadcast from 1 to 2 today. We talked to Representative Brooks about some of the goings on down at the Statehouse. But thanks for keeping us on the straight and narrow, Producer Joe.
SPEAKER 12 :
Oh, it's my pleasure, Alan. And, you know, Representative Brooks, as I was thanking him for being on this show, he said something funny. Wouldn't it be great if we could just, like, get on and be like, hmm, it's peaches and cream. I don't really know what to talk about here.
SPEAKER 10 :
Wouldn't that be nice? The only nice thing about it is that there is an end in sight, that the legislative session will end, although we might be in what feels like purgatory right now as freedom lovers, but it will end eventually. And luckily, if you do believe in a higher power, you know that we serve a higher purpose, that we fight for these issues because we fight for truth. But at the end of the day, I believe in a God and I believe in a God who at the end of times will make everything right. Make sure and visit the website. The website is KimMonsonMonson.com. Kim buys all of our airtime, so we appreciate everyone who donates to allow us to talk about the nefarious ways of the Colorado State Legislature and the tyrannical majority right now. And with that, the word of the day is pretty apropos for... for what's going on. So the word of the day is diablerie. D-I-A-B-L-E-R-I-E. It is a noun, and it means reckless mischief and charismatic wildness. More reckless mischief was why I chose it. Again, we would like to call it diablerie, what's going on. But this goes, as Representative Brooks pointed out, way past mischief into just tyrannical coercion and using the state, again, to go after parental rights, to use force, to use words like discrimination, to invent words such as misgendering and dead naming, and to use that as a threat against parents for not conforming to their ideology. So Very terrifying stuff. Again, with everything that went down this weekend at the statehouse, wanted to bring up a quote by James Madison. He was born March 16th, 1751 until June 28th, 1836. He was an American statesman, diplomat. Founding father, he was the fourth president of the United States, but probably, and dare I say, even more importantly, is known as the father of the Constitution. He did very influential and important work in getting the Constitution drafted. He was heavily involved with the Federalist Papers, with Alexander Hamilton in trying to convince the public to adopt the Constitution. He then became an advocate of the Bill of Rights. He initially was against it, later became a fierce advocate for them. And he said the following. And again, when we talk about the Bill of Rights, this quote was you can see it's very easily intended towards a passage of free speech. But it has such implications beyond that, that it's a very important quote. So he said, a popular government without popular information or the means of acquiring it is but a prologue to the farce or a tragedy or perhaps both. Knowledge will forever govern ignorance, and a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives. And a lot of what happens down at the state house happens because many of these legislators believe that we, the people, are ignorant of the goings on. That the people in whole, and again, there are very many of us that care very deeply and try and stay as informed as possible, but for the most part, they are hoping that the people as a whole are ignorant of what is going on. So again, knowledge will forever govern ignorance. The more people that are knowledgeable means less people will be ignorant. So we have a lot of important sponsors of the show. One of those is Roger Mangan.
SPEAKER 13 :
And I'm talking with Roger Mangan with the Roger Mangan State Farm Insurance Team. He's been in business for 48 years, and that happens because he takes great care of his clients. And one of the first things is people need to know what they need. Roger, you need to know what you need before you can buy what you need, right?
SPEAKER 14 :
Yeah, absolutely. It brings me to the... Commercials I see on TV all the time, a company to be unnamed always concludes their advertisement with, buy what you need. How do you really know what you need? The need in Colorado, for example, I think that is paramount is underinsured motorist coverage because conservatively, 25% of the people on the road in the Denver Metroplex do not have any insurance. And those that have insurance may have the state minimum insurance. when it comes to underinsured motorists. As a matter of fact, in Colorado, you can waive by law uninsured motorists and not have any of that coverage. Now, is that good or bad? Well, let's take your situation as a consumer in your car. You're responsible. You have a good job. You have a family. You're going to buy the coverage you need. But that depends on your situation. For example, if you're an entrepreneur and you don't have disability insurance through a corporate employer, then your need is greater than the person that has that coverage. So I hit you and I don't have insurance and you are making $100,000 a year and you can't work for two years. Can you go one month, two months, two years without any income? Well, that person who hit you may be compliant with the law, He may have underinsured motorists, but if he waived it, obviously he doesn't have any. So where do you turn in that situation? You turn to your own carrier, in this case State Farm is my company, and I would look at your policy and say because of your situation, your unique situation, here's how you should structure that particular coverage.
SPEAKER 13 :
But how can that be that people don't have coverage here in Colorado? Because I thought there was a law that said you did have to have coverage.
SPEAKER 14 :
Yeah, there is a law, but you can waive that coverage with that company you're buying your insurance from. And if you do, then you become personally, fiscally responsible for a law. And if you don't have coverage, If you've waived the coverage, and your insurance company says, okay, you don't have to buy it, sign this waiver, they're on their own, so now you get hit by this uninsured motorist, and he has no financial strength to pay you anything. So what happens, the law is on the books that says, yes, you should have it, but the insurance companies let you waive it. So they're almost like, that's a noncompliant relationship off the get-go. So let's say that you... Buy it, but you have the state minimum of $15,000, $30,000. In which case, I hit you. I'm the underinsured motorist in this case. Not uninsured, but underinsured. You win a suit of $100,000. My company steps in. and pays you 15,000, you're out to 75,000. So if you are properly insured with your own carrier, they can step in and pay the deficit for that amount. But we're talking about If we're talking about marginal incomes and pain and suffering and everything else that goes with an accident, you get hit by someone who has no insurance at all, then your carrier, for example, in your case, Kim, I might design a plan where I give you $500,000 of uninsured motors because you're out there fairly... empty in terms of disability insurance unless you went on bought it on your own so you get hit now by me i have no insurance and your income is such that state farm could be on the hook for five hundred thousand dollars to pay you for to reimburse you for the lost income you would have earned during that period as you're convalescing through that repair of that medical situation so
SPEAKER 13 :
Wow, so it really is important that people understand that, this landscape here in Colorado. So one of the best ways for people to try to figure out a way to buy what they need is to make an appointment with you and your team. What's the best way to reach you?
SPEAKER 14 :
You can call us at 303-795-8855.
SPEAKER 13 :

The center is focused on honoring our Medal of Honor recipients in teaching and upholding the principles of America, honor, integrity, and patriotism. For more information, check out our website, AmericanValuesCenter.org. That's AmericanValuesCenter.org. So I know in the first hour we got to cover a lot of what's going on at the state house and some of the terrifying bills. But also in the first hour I got to talk a little bit about some of the sports headlines happening this past weekend, one of them being Alex Ovechkin passing Wayne Gretzky, for the all-time NHL goal scorers and the fact that Gretzky was there to win Ovechkin did that is just a good sportsmanship and fortunately today we have Colonel Rutledge joining us to talk some about the Masters Tournament and the history regarding that and one of the Cool traditions in the Masters Tournament is the prior award winner gets to put the jacket on the upcoming winner. So this year, Scotty Scheffler will be putting the green jacket on whoever wins. But just a good tradition of sportsmanship and the values and the virtue that that instills. And we're very fortunate to have on the show with us Colonel Rutledge to give us some of that history. So welcome to the show, Colonel Rutledge.
SPEAKER 16 :
Well, good morning, Alan. It's a pleasure to talk with you. And I talked with Kim over the weekend and she's enjoying being in San Diego with her family.
SPEAKER 10 :
She is indeed. You know, those grandkids can, they're a handful for parents, but for grandparents, it is fun. You get to have fun with them, rile them up and give them back to the parents at the end of the day. Right?
SPEAKER 16 :
Very true. And you were talking about, uh, some of the highlights over the weekend on sports. Um, The University of Florida in Houston will be playing tonight for the national championship. And I say this with pride because I'm a graduate of the University of Florida.
SPEAKER 10 :
Oh, well, there you go. So you got skin in the game there. It was a pretty historic Final Four. I mean, when you look at some of the ratings, those four teams ranked among top ten all time, and we got to witness it all in one tournament. So it's – I love March Madness, just seeing these kids compete and the storylines. It's pretty remarkable.
SPEAKER 16 :
Yes, it is, and – Kim and I talked very briefly about March Madness about a week or so ago. And it's just a great time. It is a great time.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah, I was about to say. We got Augusta National coming up this weekend. So fortunately, we have you to give us some history on that tournament. And I got to say, I learned quite a bit just reading some of your summary. And I'm looking forward to hearing more about it.
SPEAKER 16 :
Well, when we talk about the Masters, We have to first preface it by talking a little bit about Bobby Jones. Because without Bobby Jones, there would be no Masters. Bobby Jones was the greatest amateur player in American history. And a little bit of background on him. He was born in 1902 in Atlanta to a very prosperous family. And he was given many opportunities. And to learn the game early. By the time he was 14, he was winning statewide golf tournaments. And he graduated from high school at 16. He graduated from Georgia Tech when he was 20 with a degree in engineering. And following that, he went to Harvard and got a degree in English literature and was a great writer. And following that, since his father was in the business field, he went to law school in Atlanta. And law school normally would run two to three years, and then he would be able to take the bar. However, after one year in law school, he took the bar examination for Georgia and passed it. So he dropped out of law school. And then he began to continue to travel as an amateur golfer, and there was no one who could match him. And in those days, people failed to remember that there were very few professional golfers. Many, many of the winners of the Open and a few others during that era were amateurs. But Bobby stood out, and he was outstanding. And his peak was in 1930. In 1930, he achieved then what Tiger Woods achieved in his era. He won the Big Four. And the Big Four back in those days of the majors was the U.S. Amateur, the U.S. Open, the British Amateur, and the British Open. And only if you were rather prosperous could you afford to be going to those tournaments in England since you had to go by ship, and it was very costly. And he had actually gone over there several times and won more than one Open. But the key was 1930 because it was the first time someone had won all four Majors. He came back. He had a ticker tape parade down the main street in New York City. He was welcomed back at home. And then he surprised everyone because he was only 28 years old in 1930. He said, I'm going to retire. I'm going to retire from competitive golf. And this sort of shook the golf world. But it was reality because he had plans then to find a location in Georgia where he could build his golf course that met his specifications and would be, as it turned out, would be a lasting memory to his expertise not only as a player but as a businessman and, above all, as a creator of the most sought-after golf trophy in the world, the Masters.
SPEAKER 10 :
And Colonel Rutledge, I believe you also have some connections, some personal connections to the British Open. You happen to be over there for a little bit.
SPEAKER 16 :
It was an interesting experience. Back in 1988, we did a home exchange in East Anglia in England. And our next-door neighbor was a former captain of the local golf course. And there are little golf courses scattered all over. And he began his golfing career when he was 8 years old as a caddy. And he was 12 years old in 1930, and his father said... Cliff, we're going to not go to school this week because we are going to go up to St. Andrews to watch Bobby Jones. So Cliff went up there with his father and saw Bobby Jones when he won the final of the four majors at St. Andrews, the home of golf. And one of the ironies of it is that Cliff – was a lifelong golfer, and after he had retired, he got together with some of his friends, and they formed a small club that each Sunday would go to a different golf course in the area on East Anglia. And they were out on one Sunday morning in October 1993, And Cliff had had some heart problems earlier, but he'd regained his health. And he was on the fourth green and was ready to putt, and he had a heart attack, and he died right there. And it could have been no better place for him. And his wife talked to us about it later on. And I had had an opportunity to play one round of golf with him while we were there. And it was a memorable situation, but it showed how people viewed Bobby Jones, even in England, and the chance to go and see him play was the chance of a lifetime for a golfer.
SPEAKER 10 :
Oh, I can't even imagine being 12 and getting to see that. And it was kind of funny. In your notes, you had mentioned that Cliff had played for the Eggs, the Elderly Gentlemen's Golfing Society. So what a great name for a society like that. That's very English. It's very English. It's very English. You know, I think when I get to that age, I might start my own egg society as well. That sounds like a great way to retire.
SPEAKER 16 :
You could do it, but you're going to have to change that name slightly because those were gentlemen in English, so you're going to have to come up with a little variation.
SPEAKER 10 :
We'll come up with the variation in his honor. But, you know, we're going to go to break and hear about a sponsor of the show, Karen Levine. And then maybe when we get back, you can talk a little bit more about Bobby Jones and specifically the golf course for where the Masters is now held each year. But, again, one of the great sponsors of the show is Karen Levine.
SPEAKER 01 :
Property is surely a right of mankind as real as liberty, wrote founding father John Adams. RE-MAX realtor Karen Levine has been working diligently at the local, county, state, and national levels to protect property rights and home ownership. Karen has navigated the often challenging Colorado metro real estate market for years. That's 303-877-7516.

There you can sign up for the weekly email newsletter where you can get a heads up about some great guests such as Representative Max Brooks in hour number one. And on the line with us right now is Kim. retired Colonel Rutledge he was in the United States Air Force and he has some pretty fascinating history on the Masters Tournament again that's going to be starting here this Thursday culminating with the green jacket hopefully being awarded on Sunday pending any tie holes or any shenanigans that might happen that usually ends there on a on a Sunday and you know Colonel Rutledge I remember growing up that's a Sunday afternoon is when we would watch some golf and dad would take a little afternoon nap and we could watch some of the Masters and run around and have fun. But, you know, if we go back to 1930, Bobby Jones just retired and then he decided he didn't have enough to do. So he wanted to stay involved with golf, right?
SPEAKER 16 :
Yes. Bobby had apparently had an idea for a number of years that after his retirement as a player, He wanted to build his ideal golf course, as he viewed it. And he wanted it to be built in the state of Georgia. So he did a lot of research and had friends who gave him tips and connections around the state. And they finally found a location near Augusta, Georgia, right near the Savannah River. And it was a a place that had been a nursery and it dated back from the 1850s and actually had a big antebellum home there that they initially had planned to tear down. But today we recognize it when we watch television as the Butler cabin where they all assemble and do exactly as you mentioned earlier. have last year's winner take the green coat and put it on to the new champion. So that was there. But otherwise, it was 315 acres of land that they looked at and walked the area and said he and Cliff Roberts, who was a good friend of his and a good businessman, elected that as the best place for them to do the construction. But this was right at the beginning of the Great Depression, so finances was a huge problem. And even though the property was not being used, it was nevertheless a lot of land, and they did their best to make good contacts with people. who were chief executive officers of nationally known firms and great golf fans, in order to try to assemble enough money. They put together about $70,000 as sort of a binder, and they were going to pay more, of course, to close out the deal. But their views were that this was the perfect location. And a few minutes later, we'll I want to read exactly what Bobby said later was his first impression when he went to that location because it reflects his emotions and what a great writer he was. But now that they had put their money down, they sought support. And the idea was this. The Augusta National was to be a private golf course They had not spoken of any kind of tournaments. It was to be done as a very exclusive place. And he had grown up going to a country club to learn his golf in Atlanta. So Bobby was visualizing some of the things that he had learned over the years. But his main concern was the right location to give him the freedom to to design the course based upon all of his years of travel and competition in golf. And he felt that that was the right place. So he actually hired an English doctor. And he was an MD, but he was also an architect for golf, Alistair McKenzie. Sounds very appropriate. Dr. McKenzie was going to do some of the layout, but everything was subject to the approval of Bobby. Bobby walked the course with him. They went over, they spent many, many hours just getting acquainted with the property and the terrain. And Bobby had veto rights on every detail. But nevertheless, he wanted to give tribute to Bobby. Dr. McKenzie in after years when people would ask, well, who designed your course? He would often give credit to him. But nevertheless, Bobby was the one who called the shots.
SPEAKER 10 :
And it's kind of interesting because, you know, he didn't make it easy. His ideal golf course, again, when we talk about virtuous people, was one that was going to push him. And they call it Amen Corner. That's holes 11, 12, and 13. It's kind of where... If you're looking at an aerial of the course, it's kind of a corner. So those three holes kind of turn around. And Amen Corner is pretty famous for how brutally difficult it is to navigate. Three very difficult holes all in a row, almost right after the turn when you start your back nine.
SPEAKER 16 :
That's true. However, we must remember the 15th hole because the 15th hole, was the key in 1935 to guarantee the survival of the tournament. Let's go back to the start of it. First of all, they were building it, and they realized that they couldn't collect enough money just from the general public, so they had to elect to do a tournament as a fundraiser. The idea on the fundraiser was to make it such an attractive event that new people who could afford to pay the membership and join the club would suddenly come to Augusta and become a part of their corporate structure. So it made a lot of sense to do that. So 1934 was their first effort in this respect. But because of Bobby Jones's notoriety, what they did, Grantland Rice, who was the greatest sports writer of that era, was approached and told what their plans were. And he said, well, this is going to work out fine, Bobby, but you have to come out and play. Now, Bobby now had not been playing competitively for four years, but his reputation was so great that they knew it would attract not only spectators, but it would attract as many of the better golfers as possible. There were very few professional golfers in that era. And their equipment still was wood, and they didn't use steel in their clubs or in the shaft. So it was a different world. But nevertheless, they wanted to come back. And so they set the tournament up, and they decided it would be in March of 1934. But unfortunately, March weather in Georgia is not much better than March weather this year was in Colorado. They had rain and wind, and it was not a very pleasant situation. But nevertheless, they were... Famous enough because Bobby had agreed to come out of retirement and play in the tournament. So because of that, Rice and other writers in the sporting field made a lot of information on it, many news releases. So it became well known. And because of that, it attracted the better golfers. And also, it was the second, only after the U.S. Open, to second golf event to be broadcast nationally over the radio. So that was just the introduction to the notoriety of the Masters. And it wasn't called the Masters on the first tournament. It was an Augusta National Golf Course invitation. Bobby felt that it was... being a little bit too inappropriate to be calling a Masters when they didn't even know if they would have the best golfers there. And he was reluctant. Now, Cliff Roberts right from the beginning and Grant Unright said, no, it's going to be the Masters. So Bobby didn't actually agree on that for about three years. And then he finally recognized... that it was growing into a unique tournament. And for all of the golf fans who are listening to us this morning, the Masters is unquestionably the most watched golf event in the world. Because of the spread of golf all over, the people in Japan are watching it, people in Europe, people in North Africa, in the Middle East, Korea, Japan, and China even are all glued to their TV sets. And not only that, not only is it the greatest event as far as golf and the winning of the trophy, but it's the hardest thing to get a ticket to. I have a friend in Fort Collins that took him seven years on the waiting list to to be able to get a ticket. And he's probably representative of many people who aspire to go there. And once he got on the list, however, they would contact him in subsequent years so that he could continue it. And one of the other unique things there is that they're not just ticket holders. They're not just customers. They're called patrons. There's always a little bit of class and much tradition so that people who go there, it's an experience of a lifetime.
SPEAKER 10 :
And it's so fascinating that this was all started right in the midst of the Great Depression. You know, the Great Depression around 1929. So Bobby Jones in 1930 is getting this idea for a golf course, starting construction in 1931, right in the midst of the Great Depression. A pretty remarkable story, one, that it was able to even happen, and now, two, just because of his desire to do it, it has such a lasting memory.
SPEAKER 16 :
Well, one of the unique contradictions of the Depression is that, yes, there was not very much money and people were really hard-pressed. But also, because of that, the construction prices increased. were a fraction of what it would be today. Matter of fact, everything was somewhat smaller. What they also did, they didn't have enough money to use for the prizes. They said, okay, we're going to have the tournament, and we're going to do this and do that. But they approached the city government of Augusta and said, look, we're going to bring a lot of people in who are going to bring money and spend in your city. And we'd like a grant from you of $10,000 that we can use for a prize pool. And the city agreed because they had several seasonal hotels. Even in those days, Augusta was a winter locale for those who were rather prosperous. So they did give them the $10,000 that they could use for the prize pool. And then they started trying to speculate on what they should charge for admission. Try this one on for going to Augusta today. For $5, you could go all four days of the tournament. If you only could be there one day, you pay $2. And if you just want to go watch the practice, you could go on Wednesday, and that would be $1. And after the fact, they added up the money, and they found that from the tournament, four days plus practice, their total cash collection was $8,011. And their estimate of the number of tickets sold was around 5,000. Mr. Well, the news people had speculated they might get 20,000. Now, the 5,000 was a smaller number because several of the people came back several times. So collectively, by adding all five days, they estimated they had about 15,000 total. Now, that's about what they have in just the grandstands in Phoenix today. when they have their open down there each each spring at one hole so the whole thing was it was a different world for golfers and not very many people could get there also transportation to and from augusta in those days was not too great i actually had a chance to go there when i was in Elementary school. I don't have many memories, but I didn't get to go to the golf course, unfortunately.
SPEAKER 10 :
And just for perspective, $5 in 1930 is approximately equivalent to $95 today, so $95 for the whole weekend. The face value for Masters tickets today is $450 for all four days. So we're going to go to break, and then we'll come back with Colonel Rutledge and talk a little bit more about the end of Bobby Jones and kind of some of the things he did. And then also, like Colonel Rutledge said, he studied English literature, so he has a pretty beautiful quote about seeing the the Augusta National Golf Course for the first time. But first, I want to say thanks to John Bosen and Bosen Law for their sponsorship of the show.

And welcome back to the show. This is Alan Thomas filling in for Kim Monson while she's traveling. Make sure and visit the website, kimmonson.com. Sign up for the weekly email newsletter. You'll learn about guests of the show, such as the one we have online right now, or... on air right now and Colonel Bill Rutledge. We're learning quite a bit about the Masters and in Augusta National and specifically about Bobby Jones and Colonel Rutledge. He's not the only colonel. You're not the only colonel in this story, are you?
SPEAKER 16 :
No. What was interesting is that after the Masters was developing and had become a national program, We had World War II started in December 7, 1951. In 1941, within a few months after that, Bobby Jones volunteered to the United States Army Air Corps to become an officer there. I had anticipated that he would have been in the JAG department that is a staff judge advocate because he had a law degree I found out that that was not true he was commissioned as a captain in military intelligence in 1942 and he was also he also was in one of the landing parties during the first week in Normandy in 1944 he was not on the initial one on June 6, but shortly thereafter. So he did serve continuously from 42 in through 44. And then he was returned to the States. And by the time he was mustered out, he was a lieutenant colonel. So when I was doing some of my reading, I couldn't understand when how some of his friends were referring to him as the colonel. They didn't say Colonel Jones. They just said, oh, in talking with one another, they'd say, yeah, well, we talked to the colonel today, or the colonel wants so-and-so. And then as I looked back further, I found out that he had a legitimate commission, and he was actually in combat. But this was never discussed in the golf environment. He was a very private individual. And as I say, he's a very literary individual. He was a great speaker, a great writer. And what many people never became aware of was that he had the onset of a very debilitating health condition that had him in a wheelchair for the last couple of decades of his life. But he would He would always go back for the Masters as long as he was mobile. And I want to conclude on that in a few moments, but perhaps we should cover it right now so we have time. Now, this is an exact quote from his writings after the golf course was constructed several years later, and he was asked, well, tell me about when you really went there. And this is what Bobby said. I shall never forget my first visit to the property, which is now the Augusta National. The long lane of magnolias through which we approached was beautiful. The old manor house with its cupola and walls of masonry two feet thick was charming. the rare trees and shrubs of the old nursery were enchanting. But when I walked out on the great terrace under the big trees behind the house and looked down over the property, the experience was unforgettable. Indeed, it even looked as though it were already a golf course, and I am sure that one standing today where I stood on This first visit on the terrace overlooking the practice putting green sees the property almost exactly as I saw it then. I still like to sit on the terrace and can do so for hours at a time enjoying the beauty of this panorama. Bobby Jones.
SPEAKER 10 :
Such a great quote. It is amazing that when you have a vision, kind of like Bobby Jones had, how it can almost feel done already when you step out and see that vision in your mind.
SPEAKER 16 :
Well, I'd say few people have an experience as unique as his. However, perhaps most of us who've had Many blessings in our lives will recall certain things in certain places, but we're not as articulate as Bobby. Now, there's another thing that's very unique. Well, there are many things that are unique. One thing which I always found interesting was that while Bobby Jones was a student at Georgia Tech, John Heisman, of the Heisman Trophy was the head football coach at Georgia Tech. And his team won a national championship. And Bobby Jones taught John Heisman how to play golf. And Bobby Jones bought him his first set of golf clubs. So in the sporting field, the most sought after award in football nationally is the Heisman Trophy. And the most sought-after trophy in golf is to win the Masters and put on a green jacket. And some of the things that are interesting is that we talked a moment ago about the money, the finances, and how the city of Augusta had given them $20,000. But what they did, they had so many bills that they needed to pay. They took $15,000 to apply towards overdue construction prices. So it only left 5,000 that, no, 15 left, it left, I'm sorry, it left 5,000 of the 20 that they could use for prize money. And first prize was only $1,500. So Horton Smith, who won the trophy, got $1,500. $1,500. And so you had 3,500 to divide up among the other contestants who'd had to travel all the way there and compete. And Bobby competed, and he was part of a foursome, and he was the attraction. But his layoff made his game not as sharp as it was. So the winner was Horton. And Bobby Jones finished 13th in the first Masters. But the key was the second Masters. The following year, they attracted more people because the first one had been successful. And on Sunday afternoon, Gene Sarazin, who was a pro, was running. He was second place when he got to the 15th hole. And so Craig Wood felt he had it in the bag, and he was leading. So on the 15th hole, it was a par 5, and Sarazin had a good drive. And he could see the pin off at the distance, so it wasn't an extreme dogleg like some of them are now. But even so, it was 230 yards out to reach the green. So we had a, used a four wood, and it was a true wood with a wooden shaft. So he made a, he pointed right at the pin and shot. And he was hoping to get on and make a birdie and maybe qualify even for a playoff. But what happened was the shot, from 230, hit the pin and went in the hole.
SPEAKER 10 :
Wow.
SPEAKER 16 :
And it was a double eagle. And that double eagle was later referred to by Grantland Rice as a shot that was heard around the world.
SPEAKER 10 :
That's amazing.
SPEAKER 16 :
And it just became a part of the history of
SPEAKER 10 :

SPEAKER 01 :
on this day is the first of days one of the most beautiful things that god allow us in our life is how we live within the space and the time i know it sounds a little bit strange if you come to think about it that our life depends on space our life also depends on the sequence of time And in a sequence of time, you know, we speak about time that is a linear time. We speak about a time you go from point A to point B, like you go from Lakewood to Denver, and you can measure distance by when you start and when you arrive. And of course, there is another function of time or dimension of time, if I may, and this will be called the time of the sequence of the seasons. For instance, you have in the year four seasons. You have the winter, then you have the spring, then you have the summer, then you have the fall. So in some places, you have just summer. In some places, you have summer and winter. So time also is a measurement reference to the seasons in which we live. And such a time affect in a big way. In fact, our reports, right, was the life. Our report was society. Our report with the environment in which we live. It affects our food. We prepare for winter, which is a season. We prepare for the fall, which is a season. It affects our social life as well, even our work. Well, closer than the time that is divided according to season, we speak also of the time that is divided in a sequence of numbers of days. And every day is divided in hours. And even during the day, we speak about a morning, we speak about a noon, we speak about an afternoon, we speak about an evening, we speak about, you know, at least there are in our prayers sequences, which are time prayers that we divide according to the 24 hours, which is a full day. We speak about the liturgical prayers, which go for seven type of zones inside one day. So you have the early morning prayer, then you have the morning prayer, then you have the mid-morning prayer, then you have the moon prayer, then you have the evening prayer, then you have the late evening prayer, then you have the midnight prayer. and the christians as a matter of fact lived in the sequence of time and for every zone for every period of time they actually pronounce a very specific prayer so even today if you still go to the sequence of the office of the hours so here you go this is what we call the prayers that we divide according to times On this morning show with Father Andre and on these minutes that we spend with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, as we are living in a season of land, of course, we want to continue speaking about what is affecting our life today as Christians in the world. Remember, I have said earlier on our show that we are still continuously talking about the the scandal that is in this life, right? And there is in this life, there is a big, big scandal. And we said, in order for us to understand the scandal of this life that we are going through, in which there are massacres, in which there is corruption, in which there is hate, in which there are problems in the world, today we want to look a little bit at the aspect of time. How does time affect us? the scandal on our life. And again, and I'm talking about the scandal in a very, very, very deep way. The scandal in some sort is an obstacle. It's an obstacle to achievement, right? So let's say I want to give it an ambient meaning. I do not want to speak about a scandal meaning an immoral way or, you know, like talking about the immoral acts of life. But, you know, for instance, you go from point A to point B, you're going from Lakewood to Denver, or you go to Colorado Springs, let's say, from Cassarot, and all of a sudden there is an accident on a highway. Let me tell you, probably I'm trying to make us consider an accident is an accident, but an accident is a scandal to what we want to accomplish. Imagine you have to go to the hospital, for instance, you're rushing your baby to the hospital, and then there is an accident on a highway. As a highway is a parking lot, you cannot go anywhere. And then you start cussing, you start cursing, or you start going impatient, or something happens, God forbid, to the baby. Time accidents could produce scandals, and these scandals are like extraordinary factors, forces, that would unfortunately cause consequences for us. In this context of speaking about how do we go about our life, avoiding scandals in our lives, and getting a deeper understanding for how we in our life, every time we are in an absence of God, when we render God absent, when we neutralize God, when we step away and move away from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, it's actually, it could be that we might be exposing ourselves to some sort of a scandal. And also, so last week, we spoke about the massacres and the destruction that are happening in Syria, for instance, the massacres that are happening in Congo, for instance. Now in Lebanon, things are getting back again. into probably bombing and some bad violence situation. Recently in my travel inside the United States during the season of Lent, to raise awareness about the work of the Mission of Hope and Mercy, I'm also realizing that in our way that we spend our subjective time, our personal time, There is somewhere else in the world events on a scale from 1 to 10, major events with negative energy, with negative consequences that are happening in the world. And we in our time may not be aware of them. And it's actually sad. I mean, in Myanmar and in Taiwan, I believe earlier this week, there was a major earthquake and you saw buildings falling, right? And there is nothing we can do about it. And what is this earthquake? 30 seconds, 40 seconds, 50 seconds. So imagine in a lapse of time, a 40 second of continuous shaking of the ground, it could produce lots of harm. It could produce death. That's a scandal that actually depends also on a time of a disaster. A scandal of time in our Christian faith, for instance, if we do not know how to pray within the hours every time during our 24 hours to consecrate all of our time to Almighty God. See, this is how Christians sanctified the time. This is how Christians in the past, they understood that we have a responsibility to ask for God's dominance, for God's blessing over the time, to save us from dangers, to save us from persecution. You know, last Sunday I spoke to you also as we draw nearer to the Holy Week, Palm Sunday before Holy Week and then Holy Week and then Easter. We spoke about Lazarus, right? And we said that Jesus delayed his visit to Bethany to go visit Lazarus and his sister Mary and his sister Martha. And actually, Martha was upset with the Lord, a little bit disappointed. And I'm not trying to subjectivize the gospel to what we might feel ourselves, our emotions. But it is obvious that Martha somehow was telling the Lord, hey, You are late. Had you been here, he would not have died. Had you been here is a function of time. And Martha somehow is expressing her sadness because her brother, who she knew, the Lord Jesus Christ, loved so much, cherished so much, he left him for four days in a tomb. That's another scandal that is depending on a time sequence. Because as I said last week, a body and death, Laying in a tomb for four days, it's completely corrupt, and the soul left that body, and it roams around, and then it goes to the netherworld, to the Sheol, as we called it last week, and it can't find its way back to the body. And therefore, the body decomposes, and the body becomes corrupt. And then the sod takes over the body, and the body starts going back to rotting and to dust, unfortunately. So Martha looked at Jesus and she told him, you delayed, you should have been here. And when he said, remove the stone, where did you bury him? You know, remove the stone. And she told him, she told him, Lord, he has been dead for four days. Four days, it, you know, I do not know if you know in the Aramaic symbolism, right? In the Aramaic symbolism of time and of numbers and of numbers. You know, the week is seven days. We say the Lord created the world in seven days. And the number seven in the Aramaic symbolism is three plus four. And the three plus four or the four plus three It's an indication of quality and quantity. So when we speak about God creating the world in seven days, why number seven is a perfect number? And here's a little scoop for us to understand why. Because number seven is composed of three plus four. And that three is the number for the perfection, basically an absolute perfection of quality. Number three. That's why when we speak about God as well in the Aramaic tradition, we look at God and we say, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. That's three persons, one God. Not three gods. Three persons and one God. We're talking about the perfection of the deity, the fullness of the deity, in quality, in omnipotence, in power, in magnificence, in love, in faith. in hope, and in charity. And that's the perfect God, that's the God, there's no other God. And then as well, when we say number four, so three plus four equals seven, again, this is Father Andre on Good Sunday Morning, and on these 33 Minutes with the Lord's Day, explain a little bit how we live in a function of time. And if we do not dominate the time by blessing the time every time in our Lord and Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we will be looking at time as probably a component that allows distance, that allows a space where we roam away from the Lord, where we would be somehow affected by accidents, which is a scandal for the intention for which God made us perfect. And explaining the number four to add it to number three, so three plus four becomes seven. So the number four is the symbol of the perfection in quantity. So imagine what we say in the Aramaic when we read the Bible from Aramaic tradition and we say that the Lord created the world in seven days. We are literally, in our mind, we are saying, oh, the Lord created the world totally perfect in quantity, reflected by number three, and totally perfect in quantity. reflected by number four and therefore number seven and on the seventh day god rested and this is why the sabbath and this is why god is perfect and then there is a new day and this is how i began with you on this morning show to speak in the lord's day or the day of the lord is the new day that begins all other days and we refer to that day in our aramaic tradition as ahad ahad or the day that is number one in creation and what did god do in number one of creation you know if you look at the book of genesis and you open the book of genesis chapter one we know the world was empty right the world was void there was nothing and then when god began his creation When God began his creation, the very first thing God put in the world is light. And God said, And God said, And of course, God saw that the light is very good. And the Lord saw that the light was so good. And then the Bible tells us in the book of Genesis chapter 1 on how do we define the sequence of time. And there was an evening and morning first day. This is the first day. So there's another dimension for our time now that we try to put together that we need to consecrate our time. What did the Christian do to consecrate the seven days every day? So every day the Christians would pray seven times every day. We as Christians, we have to pray seven times. This basically is an indication that our prayer is perfect. Our prayer is perfect, just like God's creation in seven days. He created the world. Number three being the perfection of quality and number four being the perfection of quantity. So God told us to go and abound and multiply and dominate. And he gave us the aspiration to beauty. And he gave us the blessing of the offsprings. And he gave us the blessing over the management of the world. And he even blessed the trees because of us. He made them fruitful because of us. So God basically made sure that the entire sequence of time works for the benefit of a human being. And he, in fact, told them, you know, you work for six days and give one day to the Lord. And on the Lord's day, you shall not work. You shall rest. And the scandal today, my friends, again, talking about how we as human beings, when we misuse our time, it's a part of the scandal of what we suffer from as Christians when we do not pray. I'm not saying to pray seven times. We should pray incessantly, right? We should pray at every step of the way. But at least we know as a community, we know as a family, we know as an individual that the Christians in the past were aware of their responsibility over time management. And to do good time management, they blessed the time by praying the invitatory prayer in the morning. Then they did an office of reading. They did the morning prayer. They did the mid-morning prayer. Then they did the midday prayer. Then after that, the mid-afternoon prayer. Then they did the evening prayer. And then they did the night prayer. So seven times the Christians, as a matter of fact, they prayed every time at every day. And the reason why I'm sharing with you all of this, my friends, is to tell you how important it is that the Sunday celebration represents basically the new beginning every week. We bless our entire week by doing our prayer of the very first day. And what is the first day? On the first day, basically, Jesus Christ opened heaven for us. On the first day, Jesus conquered death for us. On the first day, Jesus rose from the dead and he freed all the people who were held captives by evil, by Satan and Sheol. On the first day, Jesus Christ tied with the chains of his eternal commander, the evil and Satan, and he put them on the bottom of hell. On the first day, the Lord renewed our life and restored our innocence. And he freed our mother Eve and our father Adam from the snares of the devil and from eternal death. And the Lord, by the power of his resurrection as a mighty and a savior, he blessed us that even though we die, we shall rise again. And what do we do in return? We suppose, of course, to consecrate every period of time for God's sake. You look at your watch. And starting by the 4 a.m. in the morning, or the 5 a.m. in the morning, or the 3 a.m. in the morning, and you wake up, you say the little prayer. And if you cannot, there are many, many, many monks There are many, many, many consecrated people. This is why people went to a full consecration, who became consecrated to a life of solitude, to a life of hermitage, to a life of asceticism, to a life in which they pray as a community living in monasteries, living in convents, living away from the world. And all they did for the rest of their lives is they followed the sequence of time. and they prayed at every sequence of time, so our day will be blessed. So when we are sleeping, remember, there are monks and nuns and consecrated people who are praying for you. And in such a way, the Christian prayer permeates, perpetuates the blessing of God and spreads it across all times, across every hour, every second, every season, every factor of time, every year, every anniversary, And in everything, the Lord God himself blesses our time and he brings us back into the fullness of his presence by us blessing the time. It's beautiful. And the scandal in this, my friends, is you see that there are no longer monks and nuns to pray, right? There are no people to follow the Christian office and the Christian office of the hour, basically. When I say office of the hour, I am referring to the prayers, the breviary. It's called the breviary. It's a set of books that follows every season, that follows every season. event that is a major in the history of salvation that the Lord Jesus Christ did or passed through and that time affected our life. For instance, the birth of Jesus Christ, God is with us. The entrance of Jesus Christ in the temple, God, Jesus Christ is with his father. The miracle of Cana of Galilee, the very first public miracle, which is three years before Jesus' death. The annunciation of the Virgin Mary, which is March 25, which is exactly nine months before the celebration of Christmas, right? Which is December 25th. So those festivities, the time of Easter, the time of Lent, the time of Epiphany, the time of the baptism of our Lord, the time of Holy Week, the time of the Triduum Pasquale, or the Paschal Triduum that we call it, Holy Thursday, Holy Friday, and Holy Saturday of Holy Week. See, all these holy times, we as Christians have sorted a unique celebrations and unique events, liturgical events, prayers and psalms and adorations and holy readings and the mass that is always offered on daily basis or on weekly basis, on monthly basis, on every Sunday, on every day of the week, on every year, at every Easter, at every Christmas, at every major festivities. of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Christians knew from the beginning that one of the main objectives of our Christian prayer is to sanctify the time and bring to every time the presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to it. And when you bring Jesus Christ to the time, what does Jesus do? He blesses. Miracles happens. The sick ones will be healed. The eyes of the blind will open. The lame will walk. You know, those who have paralysis, those who have illnesses, those who have been tormented by devil will be freed. The brokenhearted will be healed. And the widows and the orphans and the lepers and the storm will be calmed, right? The storm, the storm will be calmed. Jesus Christ is God with us. He is the Amanu'il. He is the Emmanuel. And as such, he flows with miracles. And how do we render God present in our life so that every aspect of our time is rendered holy again? Meaning, it's safe. Meaning, no accident. Meaning, we order that the divine providence, we open the path to the divine providence to take over our time management. And in such a way, we avoid the problems in the world. I do believe, my brothers and sisters, on the Sunday morning with Father Andre, and on those 33 minutes with the Lord on the Lord's Day, every Sunday morning, I do believe that the effect of the Christian prayer is to create harmony between space and time. When we create harmony in space and in time, we avoid accidents. We avoid issues. We probably avoid massacres. When we are aware of the pain and of the suffering of other people, it is important to take a few minutes and to pray for the Christians in Lebanon, for instance. The Christians, you know, I do not know, across the borders. The Christians in Congo. The Christians in Nigeria. The Christians in South Sudan. The Christians in China. The Christians in many places in the world where Christianity is really important. hurting as really being persecuted. So organically, imagine that the Christians spend their days and their time to consecrate time to the Lord so that the Lord can shine light in the world, can shine grace upon the world, can shine healing upon the world. And what is it that the world hates? The Christian prayer. this is a scandal right why why do you want to hate the christian prayer is like the engine that makes the sun rise the christian prayer is like the hospital that treats the people when they are sick the christian prayer is a profound weapon against all evil it's the best weapon the christian prayer and the christian fasting in the season of lent they are the best prayer My friends, before a few of us leave on this beautiful Sunday morning with Father Andre, I want to remind you to please make sure you go online and you support the work of the Mission of Hope and Mercy. I would love that the listeners to share the Mission of Hope and Mercy's website, missionofhopeandmercy.org. where you can make your donations and become a recurring donor. Help us to continue our good work. Please support the mission's efforts during the season of Lent and allow us to have a successful Lenten appeal. Your donations and your help matter. I want to tell you, thank you so much for listening to my call and for being great contributors to the work of Mission of Hope and Mercy. And may God bless you all from all my heart on this Holy Sunday. And now, my friends, with the remaining time that we have with these 33 minutes on the Lord's Day, first of all, let us consecrate the place, the space to Almighty God by praying with Psalm 24. You know, it's the Lord's entry into His temple, the Lord's entry into His temple. And let us pray. O God, come to my assistance. O Lord, make haste to help me. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was, and the beginning is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Who can climb the Lord's mountain or stand in his holy place? The Lord's is the earth and its fullness, the world and all its peoples. It is he who set it on the seas, on the waters he laid it firm. Who shall climb the mountain of the Lord? Who shall stand in his holy place? The man with clean hands and pure heart, who desires not worthless things, who has not sworn so as to deceive his neighbor, he shall receive blessings from the Lord and reward from the God who saves him. Such are the men who seek him, seek the face of the God of Jacob. O gates, lift high your heads, grow higher ancient doors, let him enter the King of Glory. Who is the King of Glory? The Lord, the mighty, the valiant, the Lord, the valiant in war. O gates, lift high your heads, grow higher ancient doors, let him enter the King of Glory. Who is he, the King of Glory? He, the Lord of armies, He is the King of glory. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. My friends, remember that our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was unjustly condemned. Remember, this is the Lord God who had to go through the 14 stations of the cross. Remember, this is a Lord who fell three times under the weight of the cross. Remember, this is a Lord who spent, as we know in the gospel, three of his public ministry, three years of his public ministry. Being an obedient son to the Holy Bible, he lived the law of Moses. He perfected it. He applied it all and he went beyond it in spirit, not only in a letter. He himself went to the nether world. He himself laid in the world of the death for three days and three nights. And there he crushed evil, our enemy. And he destroyed the walls of animosity. And he freed all the people who were laying down in the world of death. Remember this Lord who was unjustly condemned. He was our God. Remember he was surrounded by the impious. This is the Lord who today is crying out to us. Come to me, all you who are burdened and worry about life and have trouble in life. Come, take my yoke, for my yoke is easy and my burden light. He is the one who said, come and drink from my heart. From my heart springs forth rivers of flowing and living water. This is the Lord who was surrounded by the impious. And we Christians, in our management of time, when we make our time holy, my friends, we can educate the world that the love of Jesus Christ is way stronger than all evil. We can educate the world that every time they see the sunrise and the sunset, they go to rest or they go to work or they go to spend a beautiful restful day with their families, such as on this beautiful day of the Lord on this Holy Sunday, as we draw nearer to Easter. that they can always give thanks to Almighty God before food, before work, before driving, before doing anything, and before going to bed and at sunrise when they wake up. We bless ourselves with holy water. We remind the time that this time obeys our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who we call the Lord of Time. Kurios. You know, in our church, we say this famous Greek word, and we chant it, we sing it, Kyrie eleison. And the word Kyrie eleison, it comes literally from the two components of time and lordship. Kyrie eleison, meaning, O Lord, have mercy. But the Kyrios here, is the Lord of time, the Lord who consecrated time, the Lord who sanctified time, the Lord who redeemed time, the Lord who blessed the time, the Lord who dominated the time, because the time aimed to give us death, right? This is what Satan wanted. We live and then we die. This was the curse. And Jesus Christ, he came in time. He became man of the pure Virgin Mary and the Holy Spirit. And he sanctified the time when he on the cross said, Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they're doing. And then he said, it is done. Our salvation, it is done. And he opened this detrimental curse that Satan laid on us. He crushed it. And then he gave us back our eternity. It is so beautiful to see that the Lord Jesus Christ, when he entered into the time, he set us free. So when he became a mortal being as a reflection of his life in time and in space, he and his resurrection brought us back, gave us back our immortality. And therefore, we became living being again through Christ Jesus, our Lord. May he watch over us as his people. May he watch over us as a treasure of his divine and holy and sacred heart. And may he guide our steps along the safe path across time and space so we can see his holy and mighty face. I want to thank you again, and please don't forget to go online, missionofhopeandmercy.org, and support the Mission of Hope and Mercy. And may Almighty God bless us all, protect us from all evil, forgive us our sins, and bring us all to everlasting life. Amen.

Welcome to the Flatline with your host, Rick Hughes. For the next 30 minutes, you'll be inspired, motivated, educated, but never manipulated. Now, your host, Rick Hughes.
SPEAKER 02 :
Good morning and welcome to the Flatline. I'm your host, Rick Hughes. As usual, it's 30 minutes of motivation, some inspiration, a whole lot of education done with no manipulation. That's right, no manipulation, no appeals for money, not trying to con anybody into joining anything, not trying to get you to fess it up, give it up, show up. Just please listen up. Listen as I explain phenomenal problem-solving devices taught in the Word of God, which we call a FLOT line. A FLOT line, F-L-O-T, stands for the Forward Line of Troops, and it's a military analogy. What I'm trying to say through this radio show is you can establish a main line of resistance in your soul so that you can stop the outside sources of adversity before they become the inside source of stress in your life. This is done by using God's unique resources found in His Word, God's unique resources of the Holy Spirit. When you use these two things together, this balance of residency in your soul gives you the ability to stop from having the stress in your life, not adversity. You're always going to have adversity. 1 Corinthians 10, 13 tells us that. And it says, don't be surprised at what you're going through because the rest of the human race faces it as well. But you can avoid having stress in your life. Our Lord Jesus Christ was never stressed out. He was tested. He was going through the fires as you cannot believe what he went through just to be able to go to the cross to pay for our sins, which he did, in fact. not only did he go to the cross but he walked out of the grave alive he resurrected from the dead or else it would have all been for naught he is alive today and the wonderful news is that christ will live in you it's an amazing thing christ in me paul the apostle said the hope of glory today i would like to talk to you about something very unique We live in a day and in an age when people are quick to mouth off and sound off and say things they really don't need to say. With social media and the way that people get on board with Facebook and Instagram and Snapchat and Twitter and Twit and all that stuff, most of the time, it's unbelievable what people say. There is something called sins of the tongue, and this is one of the three areas of sin that believers get into. I don't know about you, but it's really easy for me to get trapped into saying something that I didn't want to say. I remember when I was a young man, probably 15, 16 years old, standing at a grocery store and the owner of the grocery store asking me what I thought about one of the guys that lived down the street. And I proceeded to give him my opinion of what I thought about that guy. And unknowingly to me, he was standing behind me listening to me. and i was being set up so it was an embarrassing moment for sure and uh don't let yourself be set up by satan you have to learn when to speak and when not to speak the bible tells us constantly and we're going to look at that this morning I'm going to go back a few years and review something that I taught in a church back in February of 2004. And this is something that we all need to remember. And I want to give it to you today as a challenge of when to keep your mouth shut. There are times to speak and there are times not to speak. The word laconic means to be a person of few words. And when it comes to certain situations, believers in the Lord Jesus Christ under the filling of the Holy Spirit, empowered by the Word of God, must be laconic. There is a time to speak up, but there's also a time to keep our mouth shut. The Bible says in Proverbs 13, 3, he who guards his words guards his life, for whoever is talkative comes to ruin. The best way that I know to destroy your life in any hope of having any future in your life is to run your mouth when you don't need to be running your mouth. You need to be listening. It's very important that we stay out of sins of the tongue. Remember, sin quenches the Holy Spirit, and there are three types of sin. There's the mental attitude sins that we commit, such as worry or bitterness or jealousy. There are also sins of the tongue, like lying and slandering, gossip, belining, criticizing, backbiting. And there are the overt sins that we get involved in, such as stealing or murder, fornication, adultery. As believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, we are mandated to do not let sin reign in your mortal body, according to the book of Romans. That means it ain't going to rain anymore for sure. We don't have time to let the sin nature control us. And the Bible says if we'll walk in the spirit, then we can defeat the flesh in the book of Galatians. Walk in the spirit and you won't be fulfilling the lust of the flesh. So there's always that battle there. That battle's always going on, and if you're like me, you have to be very careful about what you say. And so let's look at some times of when we should keep our mouth shut. Practical principles from the Word of God for people of principle, and I hope that you're one of those people. The Bible says you should keep your mouth shut when you get angry. This is a good thing for parents to remember as well. Keep your mouth shut when you get angry. Ephesians 4 31 let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor clamor means just barking loud words yelling screaming evil speaking be put away from you along with all desire to hurt someone malice again Ephesians 4 31 there's power in the Word of God let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and evil speaking be put away from you along with malice, all malice. Here is a mandate. This is not a request. This is a mandate from the word of God not to get angry and especially not to open your mouth when you're angry. You see, the clamor is the word, it's an onomatopoeia in the English. It means to make the sound, crogay is the Greek word, crogay, and it's to make the sound of the crow that crows and crawls. When a person's angry, the first indication that they're angry is their mouth begins to go off. They say things they shouldn't say, and it causes a reaction in the other persons whose own bitterness and arrogance kicks in. And the next thing you know, you have a tremendous fight, a yelling match at least, and slugs at best. Keep your mouth shut when you're angry. Another time the Bible tells us to keep our mouth shut is especially if we're tempted to tell a lie. In this political season, and we're going through for the next couple of years, you're going to hear the public lie. The public lie is if you tell it loud enough, often enough, long enough, somebody's going to believe it. And there's not a day that goes by that someone's not maligned, criticized, or assaulted on the airways of television, radio, whatever. And so the public lie, you will be faced with a lot. And if you don't have some scripture, if you don't have a background and understanding, divine establishment concepts, then you may buy into it, or as I often say to the young people that I speak to, drink the Kool-Aid. You may remember that phrase from the Jim Jones days back in Guyana when he had convinced all of his followers to drink the cyanide laced kool-aid don't drink the kool-aid here is proverbs 6 16 through 19. when you're tempted to tell a lie remember what i'm about to read to you these six things doth the lord hate wait a minute yea seven are an abomination to him verse 12 proverbs 6. a proud look, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, heart that devises wicked imagination, and feet that are swift in running to mischief, a false witness, and he that speaketh lies, and he that sows discord among the brethren. These six things doth the Lord hate. Yea, seven are an abomination unto him. Did you hear it? A proud look, that's arrogance, that's pride, that's unrealistic self-image. A lying tongue, a lying tongue. God does not tolerate liars. If there's any one thing that our Heavenly Father is, it's absolute truth. If there's anything the Lord Jesus Christ was, it's absolute truth. And the people that managed to get him crucified before Pilate were liars. They lied. They brought up lies. They brought in false witnesses to lie. Anything to get him dead so they didn't lose their power over the people. And it's always about the power. And the lies that are told in social media today are about keeping the power. Don't ever forget that. Someone wants the power back. And if they want the power back, they'll lie and lie and lie and slander and malign and criticize 24-7. And it's about getting the power back. Proverbs 12, 22, lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but they that deal in truth are his delight. Our Father in heaven desires you to be truthful. I remember speaking in a school a long time ago, and I got a note from a young lady that said, Please pray for me. I'm a liar. I have a problem. I cannot quit lying. I don't know if you have that problem, but I can tell you this. You're not authorized to lie to the IRS. You're not authorized to lie to your spouse. You're not authorized to lie to anybody. God does not tolerate liars. If you're a Christian, if you're a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, you can even lie to yourself. Unrealistic self-image gives you unrealistic expectations. And once you get into the arrogance complex, then you begin to go through self-justification and eventually move into self-deception where you lie to yourself. You think you're worthy of being treated in a way that you're not because you don't see what you really are. Lying to yourself is really a problem. We are also told in the Bible that we are not to try to straighten out an idiot. The Bible is very clear when you're tempted to straighten out an idiot, keep your mouth shut. Why? It does you no good. You're not going to straighten the idiot out. The only thing that people really can change a person's life is the power of the gospel. Where Paul said, I'm not ashamed of the power of the Lord Jesus Christ. I'm not ashamed of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 1 16. Because it is the power of God unto salvation to all who believe it. To the Jew first, then to the Gentile. The power of God is not in you convincing anyone of anything. The power of God is in the good news of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. When you speak, if you speak the gospel, you are speaking the most powerful thing in the world. But if you logically try to straighten out an idiot, you are wasting your breath. Where does it say that? Proverbs 9, 7, and 8. He that reproveth a scoffer getteth to himself shame, and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot. Verse 8, Reprove not a scoffer, lest he hate you. and rebuke a wise man and he will love you. So there you are. When you're attempted to straighten out an idiot, don't waste your breath. You're not going to do it. You know, we all have volition. Volition is your decider in your soul that God gave you. If you're listening to this show, you used your volition to decide to not turn me off. You listening, that's positive volition. There's also negative volition. Negative volition is when you say, no, I don't want to listen to that show and click, you turn it off. One of the most powerful things in the world is negative volition. Negative volition is motivated by Satan himself in the life of the believer or in the life of the unbeliever. Negative volition is motivated. Anything to stop someone from believing in Christ. Once people get negative in their volition, once the arrogance kicks into that far so that they've gone through self-justification, self-deception, self-absorption, they're on the road to self-destruction. And negative volition is a very powerful thing. And you will not straighten those people out. You can give them the gospel. It is the power of God unto salvation. The next principle is when we're tempted to speak without having all of the facts, we should be sure that we keep our mouth shut. In Proverbs 10, 14, wise men lay up knowledge, but the mouth of the foolish is near destruction. The mouth of the foolish is near destruction. When you don't know all the facts, don't jump in the middle of the argument. Don't give your two cents worth. You're not instructed in the Word of God anywhere to get in the middle of anything and try to straighten anybody else out. So if you're tempted to speak without having all the facts, stay out of the conversation. Stay out of the conversation. Wise men lay up knowledge, but the mouth of the foolish leads to destruction or is near destruction. There's another time that you should be sure that you keep your mouth shut, and that's when you're tempted to say more than you should say. You know, like giving out too much information. Proverbs 10, 19. In a multitude of words, in a multitude of words, There lacketh not sin, but he that refraineth his lips is wise. In a multitude of words, there comes the opportunity for sin. If someone can't quit talking, I know you've been around people like this. I have as well. You just wish they'd shut up. I mean, they go on and on and on. They want to give you their whole life history. They want to tell you about all their children, all their grandchildren, all their surgeries, all their operations, all their health issues, all their ideas on politics, all of this, all of that. I think sometimes people are just lonely and want somebody to talk to. But listen, the Bible is clear here. Be a man of few words. If you want to give some information out, give out the gospel. It is the power of God unto salvation to all who believe it, to the Jew first, then to the Gentile. I have seen many lives transformed and changed and turned around, but not because I logically convinced them to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, but But simply because I gave them the gospel and the Holy Spirit took what I gave them, maybe I planted a seed and someone else watered it, or maybe someone else planted the seed and I watered it. But it's always the power of the gospel as the Holy Spirit takes that information and develops it into the thought and the heart of the person who hears it. So we need to have all the facts. And when it comes to the gospel, let's be sure you understand this. You need to have all the facts as well. Don't be telling somebody they can go to heaven if they straighten up and fly right. Don't be telling somebody they go to heaven if they quit drinking and quit smoking. Don't be telling someone if they go to heaven if they just didn't do that particular sin. Remember that on the cross, our Savior paid for all of our sins, past, present, and future. So the Bible clearly says he that knew no sin was made sin for us so that we may be made the righteousness of God through him. So remember this. Your sins are not even an issue. They've been paid for. The issue is what thank ye of Christ. The Bible clearly says believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved. The Bible clearly says God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son so that whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life. The issue is always faith alone, in Christ alone. It's not faith plus giving up drinking. It's not faith plus giving up smoking. It's not faith plus giving up anything. It's simply faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross. Because it's there that he was judged in our place. It's there where he took the burden of our sin at Calvary. And once they buried him, he walked out alive. It's there that he demonstrated, yes, I am the son of God. And he can demonstrate that to you in your life as well. He will come to live in you by faith. Be sure you keep your mouth shut when you're tempted to say more than you should say. Very close to what I just told you. Be tempted to say more than you should say. In a multitude of words there lacketh not sin, but he that refraineth his lips is wise. And I think we just gave that, so let's move to the next one. When you're tempted to pervert the truth, when you're tempted to pervert the truth, be sure you keep your mouth shut. Proverbs 10, 31, the mouth of the just bringeth forth wisdom. but the perverse tongue or the lying tongue or the deceptive tongue shall be cut off so when you're tempted to pervert the truth or twist the truth or make something seem like it's really not what it happened but you know to alter it with a sound bite or to twist the truth you're not authorized to do that. God the Father knows the truth. And here's the thing about it. God was in business before we got here, and he will be in business long after we're gone. And he doesn't need our help to straighten people out. There's a monkey in Africa that has a big nose, and he's called the proboscis monkey. And he's a really funny looking creature with that big nose. Well, sometimes believers get a big nose, a long proboscis, And they stick it where it doesn't belong. And they pervert the truth. And that's why the Bible says, do not judge lest you be judged. Because with the measure you measure, it will be measured back to you again. Matthew 7, 1 through 7. So if you're tempted to pervert the truth, just so you can sway people your way and get them to believe what you want them to believe. Keep your mouth shut. This is big again in politics today. People who attempt to pervert the truth, to change the truth into the lie. Again, the public lie. Tell it often enough, long enough, somebody's going to believe it. Here's another principle. When you're tempted to malign your neighbor, keep your mouth shut. Don't do it. I live in a neighborhood. I have neighbors that come and go, move in, move out. And I'm constantly hearing my neighbors talk about the new neighbors. So much so that I go inside and turn on the TV. I don't want to hear it. Well, you can just hear it. They've got dogs. They're on my property. I mean, it's one thing after another. When you're tempted to malign your neighbor, Proverbs 11, 9, a hypocrite with his mouth destroyeth his neighbor. And that doesn't necessarily mean the person that lives next door to you. It could mean anything in that aspect. But you can destroy somebody's reputation. You can destroy somebody's advantage in life by maligning them, running them down, lying about them, complaining about them. Did God send you to straighten people out? God didn't send you here to straighten out anybody. You have enough trouble keeping your own life straight, just like me. He doesn't need my help, and I don't need your help. I need his help. I need the power of the Holy Spirit in my life using Rebound, 1 John 1, 9, and I need the power of the word of God where it says, study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of the truth. That's what I need. I need the power of the Holy Spirit and the power of the Word of God so I know when to keep my mouth shut. And I'm especially not supposed to malign, criticize, complain about my neighbor, my friends, whatever. Here's another one. If you have a quick temper, keep your mouth shut. Proverbs 14, 17, go from the presence of a foolish man, for thou perceiveth not in him the lips of knowledge. Stay away from people that have a quick temper. And there's a solution for that. The solution for that is found under the filling of the Holy Spirit as a believer. This is something you'll find when you accept Christ as your Savior and you begin to grow into grace and the knowledge of your Savior. You will find that as the Holy Spirit fills and controls your life, you will learn to control your temper. It may be your biggest enemy. You know, I found the enemy and he's me, that sort of thing. You have to learn to control your temper. And so a quick temper will destroy you and destroy other people forever. And you are foolish if you don't have some knowledge. Here's another one. When you're tempted to say hurtful things, and I put in here, especially if you're a parent, don't say hurtful things. Proverbs 15, 4, a wholesome tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit. You can actually break the spirit of your children. Fathers, Ephesians chapter six, fathers provoke not your children to wrath, but bring them up in the nurture and the admonition of the Lord. Nurture, nousia, admonition is another word, and it means to train by putting, you train your children by putting something on their seat, or you train your children by putting something in their mind. Paideia and nousia are the two Greek words. Paideia we get paddled from. And so we have to train our children, but we're not authorized to say anything hurtful to our children, to call them dumb, to call them stupid. I mean, that's pitiful if that's the way you have to control your child. Another one, if you're tempted to be rude, keep your mouth shut. Proverbs 16, 24, pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and health to the bones. Simply saying encouragement is healthy. And if you're out in the public like I am, you get bad service constantly like I do. I'm constantly eating in restaurants, eating out. Service is pitiful sometimes. but God doesn't authorize me to be rude or mean or arrogant. When you're tempted to gossip or repeat what is true or false, slander is repeating what is a lie. Gossip is repeating what may be true. We're not allowed to do either one. Proverbs 16, 26, a perverse man soweth strife, and a whisperer separate the chief friends. Another one, when you don't know what you're talking about, keep your mouth shut. Luke 11, 27 and 28, when the woman tried to correct Jesus and tried to make an issue out of the wound and the Lord was very kind and he told her she was wrong. If you find yourself talking to a fool, keep your mouth shut. Proverbs 23, 9, speak not in the ears of a fool for he will despise the wisdom of your words. Ladies, if you're trying to control your husband, by nagging at him. The Bible says, Proverbs 19, 13, the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping. It can be a bit much. So when it comes to that, don't nag. And be careful when you're tempted to judge another believer. Proverbs 21, 23, whosoever keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps his soul from trouble. We have to be that way. We have to be very careful. I hope this is helpful. Just a few practical principles about when to keep your mouth shut. No great revelation. You probably knew all of that, but there's the scripture that goes with it. I hope it's encouraging to you, and I hope you'll be able to stay out of the sins of the tongue because this is where it originates. It's wonderful to be able to give this information to you. It's wonderful to be able to be on this radio station with you. If the show ever fails to play in your area, don't hesitate to contact me. Let me know. I hope you'll come back next week. In this episode of Rush to Reason, Richard and John delve into the cutting-edge updates featured in the 2024 Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter. Highlighting its formidable off-road capabilities, the versatile Trailhunter emerges as a premier choice for enthusiasts seeking adventure on the trails. Discover why this latest model is creating waves in the automotive community, as the Rush team shares their personal driving experiences and expert insights.
SPEAKER 03 :
Rush to Reason, Denver's Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560. Richard Rush with me right now. Okay, Richard, as always, I shouldn't say always, but we drive pretty routinely cars. We're able to test drive certain things, get some feedback. Now, really quick for everybody listening, we drive these for a week. We get a pretty good idea of all of the different things that are there. When the car is new, we have no way of telling you down the road what are things going to be like other than certain makes and models have got some problems. some history with them and so on. But at the end of the day, Richard, we drive them for a week. We report back how they work. We try to do it as unbiased as we can. In other words, looking at it from the car's point of view, not anybody else's. You tend to look at things a little bit younger. I look at things a little bit older. But what have you driven lately? What do you want to start with?
SPEAKER 01 :
Yeah, well, let's start with one that I think people have come to love, and it's been a staple for many years, and that's the 2024 Toyota Tacoma, and it has obviously been redesigned for 2024. This is one of the more hot designs. We actually drove a different model of this vehicle a little bit earlier. I guess it was a little bit later last year, so you guys can go look for that one. This is the Trailhunter version, Dad, which is like the TRD Pro, and for those of your listeners that are familiar with them, these are the two most off-road capable straight from the lot, right? So you want to go buy... a mid-sized truck, right? And that's what these are. We'll talk about that here in a second. And you want to pull this thing off the lot and basically take it up the mountains, you can do that. And they kind of come equipped with a lot of different things that give you off-road functionality, those sorts of things. As far as the Trailhunter goes, it's just a slightly different variation of the TRD Pro. It's got a little bit different of a look. It's got a utility kind of bar in the back of it that goes in the back. And it's got a few different shocks and a few things that way. One, my favorite thing about this, Dad, is what's partly new for 2024, which is it's got a new, it's a turbocharged four-cylinder, but this is the I-4 SMAC. This is the I-4 SMAC version, which is basically the hybrid version, which really kicks up the performance of it, Dad. Again, it gives you a hybrid drivetrain, 326 horsepower, 465 foot-pounds of torque. on this vehicle which doesn't do much for the fuel economy folks but here at our altitude dad and i can only imagine how this thing runs at sea level i'll just say it works phenomenally well it just runs it just blasts off from from a stop this thing gets up and goes on the infotainment system the the nice big display on the inside works really well again we we talked a little bit more about those features in the other review i encourage you to tune to that but this vehicle that being the off-road ready version It looks aggressive. You can get into this thing. I would trust it on most of our Colorado trails. Obviously, there's kind of some rougher stuff out there.
SPEAKER 03 :
To your point, this has got the full old man EMU suspension, ARB, sport bar, et cetera, et cetera. I mean, we just kind of go down the list of things that it's got, which, by the way, a lot of folks are taking a typical stock-type vehicle, Toyota, in this case a Tacoma, adding all of those things to it and then going up to the hills. This one comes fully equipped, ready to go, to your point.
SPEAKER 01 :
This one comes fully equipped, ready to rock and roll. People are going to sit, well, and some of them are going to say, well, what's the price point on this vehicle, Dad? Well, as this thing sits, again, this is about as off-road ready as you can get.
SPEAKER 1 :
$64,944.
SPEAKER 01 :
So basically $65,000 off. Fuel economy, for those that care, average of 23. It's basically 22 and 24 in terms of fuel economy.
SPEAKER 03 :
Which, really quick, if you took a standard Tacoma, added all of these accessories, you would increase the price. You'd be higher than what this price is, by the way.
SPEAKER 01 :
You would, exactly. And keep in mind that Toyota has done, they've got a bunch of different models, right? And that's sort of their model now is you kind of buy the trim level, right? You can put a few different accessories on it, but you're pretty much buying it the way that you want it. So if you want a little bit better creature comfort, you would get a bit, I think it's a limited, right, they call it. If you want the TRD Sport, you could get that. You want the TRD Pro or the Offroad, they've got all sorts of different options. The only negative to this car, Dad, is the backseat. They will say it's a backseat. However, it is not a backseat. No other way to say it. I put my 7-year-old and my 6-year-old in this car, and you know how big they are. One of them is a little bit bigger in terms of height-wise. They were very hard-pressed to get in the vehicle. I had to scoot up the driver's seat even for my younger one to fit. It's just not a very, very big backseat. Okay. Some people aren't going to care about that. I'm just being honest. I'm just telling folks if you're looking for a full-size backseat, not the vehicle for you. However, everything else about this dad, that I-Force Max engine, all of that, this thing works phenomenal. So I encourage folks, head to your local Toyota dealer, test drive these. They're now starting to be a little bit more prevalent on dealer lots. And when you do that, let them know that John and Richard Rush from Drive Radio and Rush to Reason sent you.
SPEAKER 03 :
This is John Rush from Rush to Reason and Drive Radio. Thank you so much for listening. Check out more of our podcasts at RushToReason.com or Drive-Radio.com.

So, you know, some of what we're talking about today won't matter.
SPEAKER 07 :
Looking forward to it.
SPEAKER 13 :
Yeah. You know what? I talked to several people. It's funny you said that yesterday, or you just said that, Larry. There is a lot of people I've been talking to the last couple of days where they're like, you know, we're pretty much ready for winter to be over. And I can't say as I disagree with that at all is what I'm trying to say.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah. I ran into one of the guys. He was leaving. The station this morning as I was coming in and we said the same thing. Can't wait until it's turned sunny.
SPEAKER 13 :
Nope. Several things I want to get into today because it's still, I mean, today you're not going to do anything outside. I mean, if you do, great. You might do some cleanup or something like that. But it's going to be a little bit warmer and sunnier as we get into the later afternoon hours. But during showtime today especially and even through drive radio, it's still going to be pretty chilly out. Some of you will have a little snow on the ground depending upon what part of town you're in. Even down here at the station as we look out, the golf course down here, it's... It's all white, and yeah, it's a little tough to do much of anything. I will probably get into next weekend because it will be a warmer day, and a lot of you maybe because of whatever reason haven't fired up your sprinkler systems quite yet. Some of us have, myself included. And yes, I know it's 28 degrees, but I don't care. Mine was fired up a couple of weeks ago.
SPEAKER 07 :
So they're not going to freeze.
SPEAKER 13 :
No, it's not that cold where it's that big of an issue. But if you haven't, I will walk through that whole process next Saturday as far as that goes. So I want to make sure that we get that done. We do that every year. And yes, I know we've We've been over that in the past and so on. But one thing, too, somebody asked earlier in the week, because I had talked about this on my daily show, and then I also talked about it a little bit yesterday on Ready Radio. So this is really important. I cannot find the one that I actually own, but where I'm going with this is carbon monoxide detectors. And I had somebody call in and say, you also want to check for the oxygen levels inside of the house, but I did some research on that. As far as portability goes, there's quite a few. Kitty even makes a portable carbon monoxide tester, and there's several of them out there. So if some of you wanted me to put a link up of the one that I own, I don't see it listed on Amazon any longer. I'm sure I could still go find it, but it's not there any longer. And one thing also to remember is some of what you maybe have purchased in the past, On Amazon, because of now some of the tariffs and things that have come in, especially in regards to China and so on, you may not find the same item that you once had and or were buying. You may not find that on their website. You may still be able to find it, but it may not be on the Amazon site because of some of that. So something else to remember and keep in mind when it comes to some of the things that are out there. The reason I mention that is there has been in the last – Three weeks in the news, one, a major baseball, major Major League Baseball player, they lost a child due to carbon monoxide poisoning in a hotel while on vacation. There were three young ladies that were that that were they found deceased for the same reason that were also on vacation. And so it's something to be aware of, especially while traveling. I happen to travel with a portable carbon monoxide tester. I just keep it in my travel backpack at all times. When you get to the place you're going, you just turn it on. You don't have to take it out of your bag. Just turn it on. It's there. Something happens. It's audible. It goes off. It's real simple. In the way mine works, I've got a little carabiner to where I can just hang it outside the bag. Now it's outside. It can do its thing. Don't have to unclip it. In other words, it's always there. It makes it really easy so that it's there working and all of that. And I don't leave it on constantly when I come back home because we have testers at home. But it's something to think about, especially when you're traveling. And, by the way, some of you would say, well, as long as you stay in a really nice hotel, that's not a problem. Out of country, not true. There have been some deaths reported even in some high-end hotels outside of country. Now, I haven't seen too much about this in the United States of America. Every now and then you'll find sort of a freak thing that happens. So typically in the U.S. it's not as big of a deal. But outside of the U.S., I would not – I would not leave and go anywhere without one of these, period, just because that's what I would do. And actually, I did find a carbon monoxide tester that actually is on Amazon, and I can put a link up for this one. This one's about half the price of the one that I actually bought. And this one's a rechargeable one as well. So this one's actually, I would say, half the price and a little nicer than the one that I bought. Maybe not as robust. The one I bought is sort of in that rubberized coating where if it gets knocked around or whatever, it doesn't get all beat up. And you kind of know what I'm talking about. Like a big phone case protector on it where it doesn't get beat up. You could drop it and it wouldn't have any effect on it. It's pretty robust that way. But it's not rechargeable like the one that... I'm going to go ahead and put up on our website. So I'll put that up, by the way, on all of our different websites. I'll have Producer Ann do that today. And I can do that now. In fact, as I... I will tell her to put that out there. So that way, because I had somebody the other day asking for that. So just a side note, and the reason I say that is it is today, given the fact that a lot of you are going to be inside and you're maybe looking for something to do, and you may or may not have done even your smoke detectors with the time change we had here recently. So I would say, given the day that it is today, check all of your smoke detectors. If you've got carbon monoxide detectors, double-check those. And I will say this. If you're living in an older home to where it's, you know, this code hasn't always been there when it comes to carbon monoxide testers, detectors, I should say. If you live in an older home and don't have one, that is something that I would highly recommend. It's like a smoke alarm, in my opinion. You need to have one. If you don't, go get one. In a lot of cases, it is now code, and they'll be built into a lot of the newer homes and so on. But they're very inexpensive. And my suggestion would be to put a couple of them in the house. Always put one near where your gas appliances are. So, for example, if you've got a boiler room or a furnace room or whatever, go ahead and put one in that area. That'll tell you if you get any leaks inside of that particular area itself. And then put one in the hall near your bedrooms or even... one in each bedroom if you'd like. It depends on how your house is set up and how many rooms you've got and so on. But they call it the silent killer or the unknown killer because you can't smell it, you can't detect it, you don't know it's there. And the problem is people just don't wake up.
SPEAKER 07 :
That's right. And the sad part is for those of you that take the batteries out of your detectors because you don't like the little beepy noise.
SPEAKER 13 :
Put them back in.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, shame on you.
SPEAKER 13 :
Yeah, put them back in. Get yourself going again on that. And, yeah, they do save lives, and that's something that you want to have. And, again, that's the last thing you want to do. I know last week we talked about HVAC and the efficiencies of and changing filters and all of that. Didn't quite get into doing anything along these lines. But again, given that it's kind of a crummy weekend, crummy day today even, if you're looking along those lines for something to do, yes. And again, those are very inexpensive. You can buy carbon monoxide detectors either online. All of your big box stores will have them. You see them literally everywhere. In some cases, they are literally as convenient as just finding an outlet and plugging them in. Most of them are made that way. Now, some of them you can put up on the roof. They're battery operated. But there's a lot of them where literally you go find an outlet someplace near wherever it is that you want to make sure you're detecting things and you just go plug it in. So you can buy these in different different forms. I'll put the portable one up. So if you're traveling and again, I highly recommend for some of you that travel to different places, you may go out of country. And, you know, some of you think, well, I'm only going to Canada or I'm only going to, you know, Mexico or I'm only going down to the Caribbean or whatever. I don't care. Travel with it.
SPEAKER 07 :
I don't care if you're going to South Dakota.
SPEAKER 13 :
Larry, I've got it in my travel backpack. I take it everywhere I go, no matter what, just because you're exactly right. One more safety item, and no, I'm not always Mr. Safety, but in this particular case, yes, because this becomes something that is very easy to do.
SPEAKER 07 :
Well, that's the point. It's easy to do.
SPEAKER 13 :
Exactly.
SPEAKER 07 :
It doesn't take you out of your way to do it.
SPEAKER 13 :
So anyways, that's one of the things that's on my list for today is test all of your smoke and your carbon monoxide testers. Put new batteries in each if you haven't done that with the, like normally you do that with the time change. Yep. And for some of you, you know whether you've needed to do that or not. And just a note along those lines as well. There are different types of labeling. In fact, there are a lot of labels you can now buy where you can use like a dry erase marker, and you can put a little label underneath the detector or even inside the battery area or on the battery. For that matter, you can use a Sharpie and mark on the battery when you actually installed it. Now when you open it and look at it, you would know exactly what the date was when you installed that particular item, and you know, okay, it's due.
SPEAKER 07 :
Well, and if it's longer than a year?
SPEAKER 13 :
Change it.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yes. For the cost of the battery, it's not worth...
SPEAKER 13 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 07 :
Taking that chance.
SPEAKER 13 :
All right. Moving along. Other interior maintenance items, because that's really what I wanted to focus on today is some of the interior maintenance things. And yes, I know if you're listening on Tuesday, a lot of this won't apply. And you're going to wish on Tuesday I went ahead and did the sprinkler thing today. But for a lot of people that are listening live today, you're not going to do your sprinklers. You're going to do these other things instead. And this one's a big one. And it's a little bit... Maybe more difficult to do because it is cold, although it's not super cold out. And that is clean and inspect your windows and your screens. Now, I get washing screens and so on on a day like today, although tomorrow, Sunday, you'll be able to do this tomorrow if you would like. It'll be warm enough then to do this. But look at your windows. Do they all open and close correctly? Get your vacuum out, whether it's a little shop vac or your regular vacuum or whatever. Vacuum out all of the tracks and all the different things that can get in there because they get creepy crawlies and dust and junk and so on. Vacuum all that stuff out so when you go to use your windows, if you're somebody that does open the windows, and I get it. Some people never open the window. Allergy-wise, whatever, you just don't do it, and I get that. some people don't open windows at all some do it just depends on who you are and what kind of you know lifestyle I guess you could say you live but either way for the continual functionality of your home yes go ahead and check all of your windows make sure that they open and close correctly in some cases you may want to lubricate some things depending upon the window itself and how it's made and what you need to do and of course always use the proper lubricant for whatever it is that you're working on in a case of windows you're typically going to use like a silicone type based lubricant to where you don't want a lot of stuff getting all i wouldn't use wd-40 or anything along those lines you don't want to gum everything all up just use some sort of a silicone spray if need be but again make sure that you know things happen over the winter months Even as far as your screens go, things can bang into them. If you've got kids, if you've got pets, I mean, there's all sorts of things that can happen along those lines. And the last thing you want is, again, we're going to get into next week where it's going to be warm enough to where some of you may want to go ahead and open the window and not run your AC. If that's you, well, use today to see how all of that is working. Some of you may have already done this because we've had some warm weather already up to this point. Although... Although, for a lot of you, you probably haven't gotten to the point yet where you've opened up windows and done a lot of those things quite yet. We haven't been quite that warm yet. But, again, double-check all those things.
SPEAKER 07 :
Well, and the other side of the coin is when you do open your windows, look at the felt seal around the windows. Now would be the time to change them, especially if you're using your AC in the summertime.
SPEAKER 13 :
Good point. Good point. Yeah. Even for some of you that like to keep all the dust and everything down, you're not one to open up windows and do things along those lines, which I know some of you are that way. Yeah. Double check that and make sure. Somebody also said that really quick, the CO2 detectors plug in, you know, bedroom, et cetera. They will accommodate that first floor floor. Kitty, Nighthawk, they're both good brands. Thank you, by the way, for those recommendations. So there you go. So, yeah, again, yes, please get those. If you don't have a home that has those, put those in. Highly, highly recommended. Believe me, the last thing you want is for loss of life over something that is expensive. And I mean easily preventable because the way that works is if it's detected, number one, you immediately go outside, get some fresh air, make sure you're breathing fresh air. Otherwise, you may even at that point still have a headache or whatever if that thing has already gone off. And then depending upon where that carbon monoxide is coming from, you most likely are going to want to call somebody, have them come and inspect and see exactly what's going on. Is something plugged up? Has something happened? Is there a leak somewhere? What's going on and why is that? Is that the case? Mark and Wiggins, go ahead, sir.
SPEAKER 15 :
Hey, good morning.
SPEAKER 13 :
Good morning, Mark.
SPEAKER 15 :
It's cold and kind of dreary, and I am working in the garage with the radio going. I got my little... I got an AM radio that I bought from the thrift store for like $10 with. Nice.
SPEAKER 04 :
Nice.
SPEAKER 15 :
But I heard you guys talking about the CO detectors, and it kind of triggered a story and a comment. So when I was in school and college... I had one of my instructors that lived up in Nederland. And during the wintertime, he was running a stove. And I don't know if it was a gas stove, wood stove. I'm guessing maybe not a wood stove. And maybe it was.
SPEAKER 13 :
Could have been.
SPEAKER 15 :
But my point is, it was snowing so bad that it had covered the exhaust pipe on the roof.
SPEAKER 13 :
Yep.
SPEAKER 15 :
And as an instructor, he understood the effects of CO gas poisoning and what was going on. When he came home and found his wife and kids laying on the floor and instantly knew what was going on and dragged them out of the building, then called 911. and he almost passed out in the process. Wow. And I asked him, I said, did you have any CO alarms? And he said, no. And I'm like, you're our instructor, and you're harping on safety nonstop, and you are the guy without the CO detector? What's wrong with this picture?
SPEAKER 13 :
Mark, that's like the old saying, you know, the shoemaker's kid goes without shoes.
SPEAKER 15 :
So after that moment, I went and bought like four of them. And so I have two, actually, I think three in my garage because I've noticed, and I have them in the house too. I have one in the basement next to the furnace and, And our house actually has the converted or the newer CO fire alarm combo system, which does work. But what I've noticed is in the morning or any time during the day, really during this fall-winter season, is when my wife or I leave for work or go somewhere and fire up the car and back out, even though we're pulled in straight and close the door, it set the alarm off. Because the gases kind of flow back into the garage and trigger the alarm. So I get woken up by the by the seal alarm firing off like, hey, there's poison gas in here. And I'm like, oh, my gosh, I have to open the man door, the side door and the front door for maybe like 20 seconds to get the air out. And so what I've done is I've asked my wife and I to, when we back out, not shut the door right away, to leave it 30 seconds to a minute.
SPEAKER 13 :
Great point.
SPEAKER 15 :
And then close the door. And that hasn't, you know, it's not perfect, but the alarms don't go off as often.
SPEAKER 13 :
Right.
SPEAKER 15 :
And, you know, I just, I have a passion for safety. I really do. Anybody that knows me knows that I'm, you know, harping on safety, everything. Right. And so, you know, when you go to the store and you see the prices of a CO detector and it's, you know, they're not cheap. They're 30, 40, 50, 60 bucks, depending on the model you get. Think not about the cost of that detector and how much a funeral cost costs instead.
SPEAKER 13 :
And everything else that goes with that. Absolutely, Mark. Absolutely. Great, great thought on that. And yeah, I mean, these are very, in the grand scheme of things, Mark, very inexpensive devices to put in your home. And I like you, and for a lot of you listening, too, this is another big one. If you've got a shop or a garage that you're working out of, a similar deal, Mark, and I've got one in my shop. I've got detectors and have had for years there. You just never know, you know, running the car inside or I've got heat in the garage or things like that. I mean, you want to make sure you're safe while you're out there as well.
SPEAKER 15 :
Right, right. I used to run multiple propane heaters, and while I was working on the car, I'd get a little dizzy, and my wife's like, hey, man, are you doing okay? I'm like, oh, I'm good, I'm good. She's like, no, I don't know about that. You need some fresh air in there. But I've gotten rid of those and replaced them with electric, and yeah, it's more expensive on the electric side, but I don't have to burn up my oxygen, and there's less safety concern there, especially with the lack of oxygen at our altitude. But my other comment, well, actually, I do want to comment on the detectors. So I've got multiples, and they're the battery plug-in combo. They also make battery alone, which I keep in the older truck. And that way, if the exhaust is coming up into the cab of the truck, that thing goes off. And I've only had it happen once. And that's because it was sitting there idle and warming up and the thing's firing off. And I'm like, okay, I probably shouldn't be getting in driving. I should roll the window down and open the doors and so on. But they also make one that has a little digital readout, and that's my favorite one. Because I look at that thing, and as long as it's a zero, I know I'm good to go. If I can't see the zero, I know either the power's out or the battery's out. Good point. The other thing, probably I want to say about two weeks ago, My wife and daughter went for a walk. I had been, you know, I just came home. And they came home, you know, through the front door, and they said, hey, we smell gas. And I'm like, what do you mean? Like gasoline gas, natural gas, like somebody tooted kind of gas? What are we talking about? And they said, no, we smell natural gas. I couldn't smell it. I went outside. I still couldn't smell it. I went to the meter. Couldn't smell anything. I'm like, OK, normally, you know, if you're not sick or we actually have somebody that lives in this town that can't smell at all. Unfortunately, they're in the fire department. They have to use the meter that the gas smell just it was not registering either because I had a cold or what was going on. I don't know.
SPEAKER 04 :
Right.
SPEAKER 15 :
But I immediately called. Xcel Energy, I said, you know, we may have a problem. And they said, okay, you know, went through the prompts, very safe, don't start any electricals, don't light a cigarette, that kind of thing. And so they said, you know, it's going to be probably an hour. Okay. So I told my wife, don't fire off anything. Don't turn on the light or off the light. It's already, you know, in process. Don't open or close the garage door. You know, we don't need a spark because I don't know how much gas is there. Well, anyway, I could not smell it. And even the guy, once he showed up, bless his heart, he had the patience to continuously test and run his meter around the front of the house. And what he found was all. So years ago, they had come out and resealed the fittings. And I guess they had found some of them that were leaking a little bit. But I never noticed. They just showed up and started doing the work. But what he found was none of those fittings were leaking. Where it was leaking from was the actual shutoff. And I didn't understand this, but he explained that inside the valve itself is, I guess, grease. I don't know if there was a grease fitting. I didn't see one. But he said that that can solidify and allow grease to actually come out the side or the gas to come out the side of the valve and was leaking. And his alarm was definitely going off. um and so he said you know i'm i can you know fix the valve no problem well we won't even have to disturb your your flow but we'll try some things and and go from there and i'm i'm standing out in the street you know like okay you know i don't know what's gonna go um i'm keeping a safe distance he's like it's it's not that bad he said it would be up in your face unbearable stinky to be dangerous. And that's not to say don't call if you can't, you know, if you smell it. But his point was is that even a small amount is best to call. And when I called, they said, you know, did you call the fire department? I'm like, no. You know, like, why would I want to wake up an all-volunteer fire department when there is no fire, there's no, like, I don't hear gas blasting out of the ground, and they're going to call the gas people anyway. So that doesn't make sense. Right. And so my point is, is that I couldn't smell it, and neither can a CO alarm. Okay. So a CO alarm is for CO, not natural gas, not the same.
SPEAKER 13 :
Yeah, no, they're not the same. You're correct, not the same.
SPEAKER 15 :
So if you have a CO alarm in your basement, but you have a natural gas leak and it doesn't go off, you could still have a leak and not know it if you can't smell.
SPEAKER 13 :
True, and that's why they put the smelly stuff in it.
SPEAKER 15 :
Right. Well, as long as you can smell. If you're sick or got, I don't know, COVID and can't smell.
SPEAKER 13 :
No, we know colds, things like that can affect all that, Mark. You're right. No, absolutely. Yes.
SPEAKER 15 :
So they do sell a little kit. I think I just looked it up on Home Depot. It's similar to a seal alarm, but it's for the purpose of propane and natural gas. I didn't even know that until just now while you guys were talking.
SPEAKER 13 :
Good to know.
SPEAKER 15 :
Great show, guys.
SPEAKER 13 :
Keep it going. Mark, as always, I appreciate you, man. Thank you very much. Bill, Joe, guys, hang tight. We'll come right back. This is Fix It Radio, KLZ 560.

SPEAKER 03 :
Hey, my smoke detector, I'm pretty sure it's a kitty. It comes with a 10-year battery. Oh, okay. And so you don't even got to mess with it. Just throw it away and buy another one.
SPEAKER 13 :
Well, that's all right, too.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, well, it just is, you know, instead of messing around with batteries all the time. Yeah, good idea.
SPEAKER 13 :
Yeah, didn't know that.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yep.
SPEAKER 13 :
How did it let you know that the battery's discharged? Does it beep at you or something, or does it tell you?
SPEAKER 03 :
Well, I don't know. You ain't got 10 years yet, so you don't know.
SPEAKER 13 :
Good point.
SPEAKER 03 :
But I'm sure it does start to beep when it's going.
SPEAKER 13 :
I'm sure it'll do something, yeah. Okay, good to know. I didn't know that, Bill. Thank you, by the way. I appreciate that. Joe in Jersey, what's up?
SPEAKER 14 :
Hey, John, I know not everybody's crazy like you and barbecues all winter long, but for those who don't barbecue except when it gets to be warm weather like me, a lot of people don't know that your propane tank regulator has a flow safety in it. And I accidentally tripped mine the other day because I didn't realize when I opened the tank valve that two of my three burner valves were in the open position.
SPEAKER 04 :
Ah.
SPEAKER 14 :
And if you do that, you will trip the flow-limiting safety inside that little regulator, and you won't get any flame or you'll get a little tiny flame. And if you make the mistake of doing that, you don't have to replace the regulator, which a lot of people, like my neighbor, mistakenly did one year. You simply close the tank, close the valves, undo the regulator from the tank, wait a minute, then reconnect the regulator. Make sure the burner valves are all completely closed. And then slowly open the tank valve because if you, let's say you've got two or three burners and you have those valves wide open and you just crank open the tank valve, you will trip the flow limiting because there will be this sudden rush that exceeds the designated limit that's built, the safety limit, and you will trip your regulator. And I can't tell you. And I go and I look at all the regulators. Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER 13 :
Do people buy?
SPEAKER 14 :
Well, you go into Lowe's and they have like 18 in stock.
SPEAKER 13 :
Yeah, it shows you how many they sell.
SPEAKER 14 :
Yeah, because I, you know, like, and again, if you, so I believe what's happening, John, is that people are tripping their flow limiting safety in the regulator and they go out and buy a new one because they think it's bad. It's not bad that you can reset it.
SPEAKER 13 :
Okay. Yeah. Good reminder.
SPEAKER 14 :
All right, that's all I got.
SPEAKER 13 :
No, good reminder, Joe. Appreciate you very much. And, yeah, for a lot of you that may this next week even be firing things up. And, yeah, some people barbecue and do things all winter long. Some don't. It just depends on, you know, you and how your setup is and how nice it is at different times. And we get some of our Indian summer days. And I am not a diehard where I will be out on a day like today doing things. Now, some will, and, no, I'm not one of those individuals. But... We get some pretty nice weather at times, even during the middle of winter where folks will go out and use the barbecue and do different things. And, you know, that's a great reminder. So, Joe, thank you for that because, yeah, if you're out there and you're firing things up and you notice that they're not quite working, you know, it isn't working like it should be, there's your instructions from Joe just a moment ago. Okay. Going along with our list of things to do when it's a day like it is today. Should have asked Joe what his weather was like in Jersey. But anyways, here, there's even a few snow flurries floating around here at the station, so a lot of you are not going to be outside doing things. this one is is interesting because honestly i don't know that this is one that most people actually check for or they just finally notice it when it actually happens and that is checking for moisture in your basement or your crawl space look for leaks water stains mold and then figure out what those issues are and address those accordingly and yeah larry i will tell you that i even personally i don't know that i'm somebody that purposely runs around and checks to see If there's moistures in those areas, I think you go address it as you know it shows up. But I don't know that most people are proactive in that. So that's another one where if you've got an exposed crawl space or an exposed basement, yeah, by all means, take a peek underneath. Make sure that things are looking good. You don't have any leaks, especially with as wet as we've been here over the past few days. It would be a great day to actually go and look at some of those things and figure out how things look when it comes to being dry and all of that. Yeah.
SPEAKER 07 :
Well, your biggest concern is why is it that I'm looking for the crawl space? Well, if it's wet, you have moisture, you have mildew.
SPEAKER 13 :
That's right.
SPEAKER 07 :
The mildew is what really is the concern.
SPEAKER 13 :
Yeah, the mold and mildew, you want to make sure you're keeping that down. So, yes, by all means, check to make sure you don't have anything along those lines. Jeff in Montana, what's going on?
SPEAKER 06 :
Hey, good morning, gents. It sounds like our weather's a little bit better than yours for a change.
SPEAKER 13 :
I think we got what you had last week.
SPEAKER 06 :
This past Wednesday, we had every kind of weather in one day. I mean, sunshine, blowing snow, accumulations of over an inch. I thought we were back in March and it was supposed to be April. We're not supposed to have this stuff anymore. Actually, for you guys, April is your second snowiest month.
SPEAKER 13 :
Yeah, this is pretty normal for us, so it is what it is.
SPEAKER 07 :
So where did the storm come along? Did April showers bring May flowers? What happened to that?
SPEAKER 06 :
I don't know, but you know what Mayflowers bring?
SPEAKER 13 :
What? Pilgrims. Ah, there we go. Mayflowers bring pilgrims. Good one, Jeff. Good one. Good one.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, for the CO2, or CO, I'm sorry. I'm so used to talking global warming that CO2 popped out. The CO detectors, my... We were on vacation in Colorado, of all places, when I was nine years old in 1961, and we stopped at some little hotel. I can't remember where. It was around central Colorado, somewhere in the mining area, gold mine area. And they had an in-wall heater, propane heater, natural gas, and that leaked. And it either leaked or it had carbon monoxide. I'm not sure which. But I got up in the middle of the night because I wasn't feeling good. I don't know why I woke up. Nobody else did. But I went and opened the front door and put a couple of chairs in and just laid in front of the front door. And I was told later that ended up saving our lives, the whole family, because everybody else was back in the room and let enough oxygen in so that it didn't kill us. Otherwise, it would have. My point is that, as you said, it can happen anywhere. It happened in Colorado. And if you go to the smaller motels, you know, they may still have the in-wall heaters. So you just don't know. It's always better to be safe than sorry.
SPEAKER 13 :
It is very much so. I remember those. In fact, a lot of those have now gone to electric, but I can remember those in-wall heaters as a kid, Jeff, and I still see some of those floating around occasionally at different places. So, yeah, it's something that you definitely want to be aware of, absolutely.
SPEAKER 06 :
Right. And another thing that the detectors in a smoke detector wear out after 10 years is It's made with, I think it's americium, a radioactive element that can detect the carbon monoxide. So if your detector is 10 years or older, it needs to go. It's no longer effective. When I moved into this house, we moved in in, what, 2017, and the detectors hadn't been changed in 20 years. So the first thing I did was replace all the smoke detectors. And I did not know about the mobile CO detectors. Yep, I learned about those.
SPEAKER 13 :
Oh, I don't know, Jeff. I've been carrying one now for a couple of years, I want to say, as I started reading more people on vacation dying from that. I'm like, yeah, I'm not going to be that guy, so I'm going to start dragging one along with me. And I get it, and everybody that's out there, well, when it's your time to go, it's your time to go. Well, you know, I don't want to go by being stupid.
SPEAKER 06 :
No, it's not my time to go if I can prevent it. There you go.
SPEAKER 13 :
Thank you, Jeff.
SPEAKER 06 :
No. If you want to go because you're going to do something avoidable, fine. But it's like saying, well, you know, I'm not going to worry about my breaks and change and stuff. If it's my time to go, it's my time to go. No. No, don't do that.
SPEAKER 13 :
Right. Right. Well, yeah, and what I've learned, even this morning, from when I bought the one I own versus what's now available today, like anything else, the more they become popular and the more of them that are made, the cheaper they become, because the one that I actually just put up, that Ann will put up today on the websites, is about half of the one that I bought and actually is rechargeable.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, that's pretty cool. Works very well. And I think CO detectors also... have a 15-year limit, I think, and they just flat stop working. Okay. So they'll let you know when they're no longer effective. But CO detectors don't do that. So, you know, if you get a new one, what I did is just on the inside of the housing where you can't see it right to date, when you go up and check the battery, you know what's going on. And if it's older than 10 years, change it.
SPEAKER 13 :
Good point. Good point.
SPEAKER 06 :
Anyway, I hope it does get warmer for you guys.
SPEAKER 13 :
Oh, it will be. It's supposed to be a little bit better tomorrow, and then by the time people listen to this replay on Tuesday, it's going to be very nice.
SPEAKER 06 :
Good. Well, we got bright sun and... My wife and I are alone together for one day before our granddaughter comes back to be with us. Good for you. We're going to enjoy it.
SPEAKER 13 :
Good for you. We'll enjoy both, by the way. The peace and quiet and them coming back, both.
SPEAKER 06 :
Some other time off air, I can tell you the sad story of how we got our granddaughter and the court battle we just went through to make sure her parents couldn't get her back.
SPEAKER 13 :
That's too bad.
SPEAKER 07 :
Part of life, but it happens.
SPEAKER 13 :
Yes, it does. Jeff, appreciate you, man. Keep it up, man.
SPEAKER 07 :
I was going to tell you, John, talking about smoke detectors. I happen to be at Ace Hardware, and I was in the same aisle where the smoke detectors were, and I'm looking for different things. And there's a couple standing next to me, and they're talking about smoke detectors and how they want to replace them and this, that, and the other thing. And I heard the husband say something to the effect that we can't afford this. And I remember listening to the woman say, is that all I'm worth? And all of a sudden, this guy picks up about four of these detectors and puts them in the buggy. Oh, she's got the way to.
SPEAKER 13 :
Interesting.
SPEAKER 07 :
She's got the way to twist a flower.
SPEAKER 13 :
Interesting. Yeah, good story. All right, let's do this. We'll take a break. We've got a call coming in. We'll come right back. This is Fix It Radio, KLZ 560.

SPEAKER 13 :
All right, we are back, Fix It Radio. And if you're listening to us on Sunday or Tuesday, because, yes, this program replays on Sunday evenings as well. Thank you, by the way, at 5 o'clock on Sundays. Thank you for listening then as well. We do appreciate that. And Tuesday as well. It's going to be a nicer day tomorrow, by the way, on Sunday. So as you're listening on Sunday, it will be much nicer than it is actually. today. But for a lot of you, you're inside, you're trying to figure out, hey, I've got things I still need to get done. And as with anything, keep things up, keep them maintained. We left off that last segment talking about moisture in basement crawl space and so on. Yeah, double check those things. And again, with all the moisture we've had here over the past several days, it'd be a great day to actually look around to see, do I have any seepage any leaks you know do i have a water stain running down or even something that's that's wet you know running down the edge of something or whatever and if you do then yes by all means you want to have that looked at and if it's something roof related of course we've got lots of different sponsors but on the roof end of things roof savers of colorado dave hart call have him out have him look at whatever it is that happens to be going on when it comes to you know leaks and things like that You don't want those things to get worse because, to Larry's point earlier, moisture causes mold and mildew and can rot out different things, boards and so on. And reality is sometimes those things are hidden and you don't even know it's there until it's been happening for quite some time. So, yes, it's a good idea to have a lot of those things inspected. If you can't do it yourself, have somebody out and have it done for you. And if you can do it yourself, great. And I get everybody has a different level of ability depending upon experience, age and so on. I mean, some folks can get on a ladder, get up on the roof, look at a lot of things themselves. Other people, if you were up there, you wouldn't even know what you were looking at. I understand there's different levels for everyone. You do what you know you can do. And again, keep in mind, there's all sorts of. of helps and tips and things out there that will help you with these things. I just got a note a moment ago about how, you know, do you know anybody that can help me with some security camera installs on the outside of my home? Yes, in fact, the ad we just heard a moment ago from Ease My Pain IT Services, they do some security camera work and things like that as well, and if not, have people that they know that can. So we've got resources for pretty much anything. Anything. Really, the only thing we don't have, and I would love to get hooked up with a good one. And when I say good one, I mean good one because there's a lot of folks in the handyman business end of things that did that because they don't have anything else to do. So they went and became a handyman. And that's not the person I want. I want someone that really does have a really good, firm understanding of all the different things that are needed that are probably licensed in some areas even because you really need to be to do certain things inside of the home. And I would love to get connected with a really good handyman service that would be a part of what we do here. And if any of you out there listening know anybody or you are one and you would like to be a part of what we do, I will tell you straight up that – that first of all advertising with us here you know being a sponsor of our program is one of the best and least expensive investments when it comes to marketing and advertising your business that you'll ever find and I mean that sincerely I'm not gonna give rates out you know publicly but I will tell you that it is very very affordable us compared to a lot of other places in town that will solicit you for your business i will tell you that what we do here because i'm not doing this to get rich i'm not doing this as my main source of income i do this because i love all of you i want to help the the public whatever way we can whether it's around the house whether it's being prepared for the what-ifs of life like on ready radio or whether it's drive radio on the car sides of things we do it really to help each person listening i don't have to do this for a living like a lot of other talk show host that have shows out there do so in turn our rates and what we're able to help those of you that would like to get your business promoted i can literally do at a fraction of what you're going to pay somewhere else to have the same level of response and the same level of exposure. And I'm not bragging about that. It's just simply the fact because I don't do this as my living. I do this really as an addition to the other things that I already have going on in my world. I can do that for a lot less money than what you're going to find with some of the other quote-unquote big-name folk industries. in town and larry knows exactly what i'm talking about so does charlie literally what you do here will be at a fraction of the price of what you will do someplace else
SPEAKER 07 :
And I will guarantee you, this is a guarantee for me personally. It works. Yes. I've done this for 25 years. I had my business and I ran through this program with my business. It works. Yes, it does. And we did, you know, as John knows, we've done a lot of different things advertising wise in the automotive industry. Yes, we have. This works in the automotive industry as well as every other thing that I come across.
SPEAKER 13 :
And if you don't believe me, you can call some of our other sponsors that we have and find out from them how well things work. But I will tell you that it works. And, again, yes, it's a fraction, literally a fraction of the price. So some of you listening, if you've got a really good handyman business or you know somebody that is and you think they would benefit from having some more exposure and so on for any of you, any business, by the way, it doesn't have to be handyman. If you've got a business you'd like to have exposure with, by all means, reach out. Let me know. It doesn't have to be even home-related, although most things out there are. There's very few things out there that you could advertise that don't have something to do with being around the house. But anyways, yeah, if you're somebody that is interested in having more exposure, by all means, let us know. Just go to the website, fixitradio.com. Let me know. Send me a message. we will get together figure that okay here's one that this time of the year is also this is in my notes more for termites which we don't have a lot of in colorado and i i know i will get corrected on that somebody will say well yes we do well not like other places in the country so yes i know we can have some although We don't you know, you will rarely ever be in Colorado and see an entire house tented like they do in other parts of the country whereby everybody leaves. They tent the place with a big bubble. Basically, they fumigate the thing to try to kill all the termites and nobody can be in there for a couple of days. We don't do that in Colorado. You will rarely ever see. In fact, first time I ever saw one of those. And I was driving around. He was down in Houston or something. I'm like, what in the world? And then somebody said, well, yeah, that's for termites. I'm like, what? Termites. I'm like, what's that? I mean, literally, because I was that young. I'm like, what's that? And, you know, of course, learn, you know, because we don't have those. We don't have much of that problem here in Colorado. But pests in general, yes, we can have those.
SPEAKER 07 :
Cockroaches are terrible in Colorado.
SPEAKER 13 :
Okay, so there you go. So for those of you listening, check for pests. And I'm more along the lines of look for infiltration of mice and squirrels and rabbits and things along those lines because those little boogers can get in a lot of different places and do a lot of damage at times. So that's another one of those things that you can really double check and make sure, hey, I want to make sure I don't have any issues in these particular areas and things. And some of those things, they will do things all year long. The other thing, too, this time of year that you'll start noticing is the birds are back. They'll start building nests, and in some cases, that's fine. You want that nest to be there. In other cases, it's like, yeah, that's going to do nothing but make one big, huge, gigantic mess, and I don't want that built there.
SPEAKER 07 :
Well, that's where you look into your dryer vent. They will nest in your dryer vent if they can get in there. That's a great point, too.
SPEAKER 13 :
In fact, that was on my next list here is make sure that your dryer vent, day like today, something else that could be clean and handled. In fact, you could do a lot of appliance cleaning today, period. Pull that fridge out. Vacuum out all of the coils and everything that are back behind. It'll make things run more efficiently, cost you less money in the end to run it. There's little simple things because all of those things have fans. They're sucking in dust and pet hair and other things that are out there. So, yes, whatever you can do to keep those things clean, refrigeration coils, et cetera, by all means, make sure that you're all dialed in on all of those things. Will, you are next. Go ahead.
SPEAKER 05 :
Hello?
SPEAKER 13 :
Hello, Will.
SPEAKER 05 :
Hey. Yeah, you were talking about different alarms and stuff, and I just was at Ace Hardware up here in Conifer and picked up a 3-in-1...
SPEAKER 13 :
carbon monoxide and explosive gas first alert oh nice good job yeah it has carbon monoxide methane and propane that's really good nice yeah I've never seen one I've never seen one either I'm glad you just said that for a lot of folks that have been listening throughout this hour now some of you that have been listening will know you can go pick one of those up and it will do all of those yeah it's pretty cool interesting it's a plug-in cost
SPEAKER 05 :
First alert. Cost was by, what, $65 maybe.
SPEAKER 13 :
Okay, so given they're all together, that's not bad.
SPEAKER 05 :
No. It's cheaper than replacing the house.
SPEAKER 13 :
Cheaper than replacing, you can't replace a life, as we know, Will.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yep, exactly.
SPEAKER 13 :
So, yeah, in that respect, it's pennies on the dollar.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER 13 :
Even less. Or less, absolutely, less. Good to know, Will. Thank you. I did not know that. I will find one of those, put that up in our links as well. Thank you for that.
SPEAKER 05 :
Very good.
SPEAKER 13 :
Appreciate you, Will. Thank you for that. We have great listeners, by the way. And as you guys can all tell, that's where I was going back to even the whole sponsor thing a moment ago. We have a huge community of listeners. Will's all the way up in Conifer, so he's up in the foothills. And we've got folks all the way up into Wyoming, Nebraska, out to Kansas, all the way down into the panhandle of Texas. I had somebody email me first thing this morning, Kyle from Dallas. We've got folks literally from all over the country. Joe's back in Jersey. We've got folks that listen down – in Arizona, in California, in Minnesota, in Michigan, in Florida. And I've had some calls from Hawaii even. So we get them from all over. So we appreciate each and every one of you. And Will, thank you for that. I will definitely look that up here in a moment. Now, one thing, I know we talked about this in depth a few weeks ago, but since it's on the list, I'll go ahead and cover it really quick. But we did a whole show on this, spent an entire, I think we did almost two weeks on this, and that is your water heater. So... Check your water heater. Make sure things are working as they should and so on. Now, interestingly enough, and this one I've got to do a little bit more investigation work on because we talked about on-demand water heaters that particular show. And, again, this has been a few weeks ago, probably over a month ago. And I watched a video this last week that I didn't fully trust because I've got to do a little more research on this. But in this particular video, this person was saying, stay away from on-demand water heaters because A, they're super high maintenance. B, you never really own the heater. You're just leasing it, which I'm not sure I understood exactly what this person was saying. Because last I checked, when you own one outright, you own it. But this guy was really getting into the whole minutia of they don't work as good as they claim. They're a lot higher maintenance, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Now, personally speaking, I have not found that to be the reality. So I question that particular video that I watch. It happened to be sort of a video slash ad that came my way. And I will definitely do a lot more research on that to determine if, in fact, and this guy was really talking about new home installs that especially in that case you're not owning the heater somebody else is and i don't think that's true at least here in colorado i don't believe that to be true i do have a way of double checking that and i will do that for those of you that listen on a regular basis and find out in fact if this particular video was true again one of those one of the things i always talk about here drive radio even during the week not everything you see in a video true there is still in there not still there is and always has been especially on the internet and a lot of untruths that still get pushed out and because enough people will watch believe and so on it will come out as a truth even though there may have been a hint of truth to it maybe that's where it got started but all of a sudden it's full bore out there and the fact of the matter is maybe only a fraction of that happens to be true so be careful even when you're watching some of these videos and things along those lines Guys, that'll do it for Fix It Radio today. Myself, Larry Unger, Charlie Grimes, our engineer. And again, thank you if you're listening on Sunday and or Tuesday. We appreciate that as well. Website, fixitradio.com. This is KLZ 560.

We explore the competitive edge of the Hyundai Kona 2025 edition, its practical applications for everyday use, and why it stands out in a crowded SUV market. With input from expert testers, this episode is your comprehensive guide to understanding whether the Kona meets your driving and lifestyle needs. Tune in to discover why this could be the SUV you’ve been searching for.
SPEAKER 01 :
All right, we are back. Rush to Reason, Debra's Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560. Time of the week, Richard, where we do a car review. You recently drove a 2025 Hyundai Kona. Talk about that.
SPEAKER 02 :
Yeah, Dad, so this is Hyundai's small SUV, right? It's definitely smaller. It can fit four full-size adults. That second row is going to be a little bit tight. No big deal, though. It does fit two kids. We'll talk about that a little bit later in the review, but if I don't, it does fit two kids with a booster seat, Dad. This is one of my more favorite cars because, in my opinion, it has a great value proposition, right? The one we drove was the Limited. It was about $35,000, $36,000. It's got an upgraded turbocharged engine on it and all-wheel drive, which is available as part of this vehicle. And so especially at our altitude, Dad, right, sometimes the four-cylinder engines or even the naturally aspirated and some of the larger engines, they don't do too well, right? They're just not as much oxygen. This little turbocharged engine was fantastic. It was fun to drive. Is it going to win any races? No, it's not. But is it going to get you what you need to do? Is it going to merge into traffic? And can you do so safely without having to kind of get on the – you know, get on the pedal and mash and be like, come on, go, go, go. And the answer is no, this thing's going to do what you need it to. It's got a lot of tech features that are standard on it, a lot of infotainment features that I think a lot of people will like, and just a lot of nice apportionments throughout the cab, Dad, that I think some people would be surprised by, to be honest with you, especially if they haven't driven a Hyundai in some time. It's a car that was remodeled for 2024, so this is the second generation of it. It looks great. They've done some updated styling on it. I encourage folks to check it out. There's also an electric version of this car, Dad, which that's not what we drove. Again, we drove the typical combustion engine, right, as far as the turbocharged four-cylinder. But outside of that, Dad, it handled really well. It's got a lot of feature comforts that I think you'd like. It's got a lot of safety features. And we talk about this a lot, and I don't have the Monrovia in front of me. One of the benefits of Hyundai, Dad, and kind of their brand – is the value that you get with the warranty, right? I believe it's a 10-year, 100,000-mile warranty on the powertrain, if I'm not mistaken. They've also got, I think, a five-year 60 that covers the whole car. And I apologize if I'm not getting those correct. But overall, it's just something where if you're wanting, if you want to have the backing of the manufacturer when you purchase a vehicle, this may be the vehicle for you, right? You don't want to have to mess with it. I also think they've got some other programs as far as, some of the basic maintenance and stuff that's available to it. Again, I would encourage folks to check this out, Dad. And you've driven this car, obviously, other models or the older ones. But I think when you and I both drove this car several years ago, I think our comments were similar, which is this is really a great value for the money.
SPEAKER 01 :
Yeah, again, for those of you that are in the market for that, I guess you could say, Richard, smaller SUV because that's exactly what this is. The Kona is an SUV. They've got, by the way, really quick for those of you listening, some great deals on this right now. What I mean by that is some money off or cheap interest rates or whatever the case may be, whatever you're looking to do. But, yeah, for those of you that are looking for a car that is in that – How should I say this, Richard? Twenty five to thirty five thousand dollar range max. Really, it's more like mid 20s to low 30s. If you're looking for something along those lines in a vehicle that, you know, is this going to be for a family of four? Probably not. Could this work for a family of three or especially a family of two? Absolutely. And if you're just looking for a daily, you know, go to work to and from, it's usually just you. You want to be able to fold the seats down and reconfigure things accordingly. Is this a vehicle that would work for that particular situation? Absolutely.
SPEAKER 02 :
Again, I would 100% agree with everything that you just said. Again, can you get the kids to and from school in this? Yes, you can. You even got a little car room in the back. Is it the biggest SUV out there? No, it's not, but it's not meant to be. This is great for an urban environment. You can fit this car anywhere. You can pull it into some tight spots at the supermarket or in downtown without worry. And like you said, the other thing I would factor in is they are really running some great specials on this, and obviously that's going to vary by area and availability. But, again, Dad, you can get a brand-new car that is an SUV. And, again, in Colorado, folks, all-wheel drive, you can get for – because an all-wheel drive, by the way, is available on every model, Dad, right? You don't have to get the Limited, which is the top of the line for us. So to your point, you can get a SUV, Grant, on the smaller side, an SUV with all-wheel drive for less than $30,000 depending on how you configure it. So we encourage folks, check this out. Head to your local Hyundai dealer. And like you said, they may even have some specials in your area that we really encourage folks to check out. And when you do, let them know that John and Richard Rush from Drive Radio and Rush to Reason sent you.

In this episode, our hosts examine how the 2025 Toyota Tundra Rally is meeting customer demands for innovation and style. They explore the new engine options, luxurious trims, and market success in regions like Colorado. Despite previous engine issues, the Tundra continues to appeal to truck enthusiasts, demonstrating Toyota’s commitment to evolving their vehicles. Stay tuned as they discuss why testing this vehicle firsthand could redefine your expectations of a truck.
SPEAKER 01 :
All right, that time each week where we slip in some car reviews. I think we only have one this week, Richard, and you were able to drive recently a 2025 Toyota Tundra Rally, which I'm not familiar with the rally version, so you'll have to fill me in as well. Go ahead.
SPEAKER 02 :
Yeah, so it's a new part for 2025, Dad, right? They kind of introduced it. I'm looking at the press release right now. And so it gives you the red, orange, and yellow colorway, right? Kind of the old Toyota TRD kind of type stuff. It gives you 18-inch wheels on all-terrain tires. Bilstein absorbing shocks. It adds heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, gives a larger display. You also have to get the, it comes on the larger Crewmax model. You get electronically controlled locking differential, multi-terrain select crawl control. Let me see here, soft tech trim seats. It's available in four colors, ice cap, magnetic gray, mignite, black, metallic, and celestial silver. And so for the easy way, Dad, is it's an option that you can put on, I think it's on the SR5, maybe any of them. I'm not entirely sure. But I know you can for sure put it kind of on the lower levels of the Tundra, Dad. And it does a great job. It kind of adds a little bit of some different badging. It adds some different, you know, luxurious features on the inside. And it's really something that it can add, just maybe set apart your collection your trim addition or your level of Tundra. But outside of that, Dad, it's pretty much everything we've come to expect, right? They redesigned this vehicle back in, let's see here, I think it was 2022, if I'm not mistaken, Dad, right, is when they really came out with this new addition. There's two different turbocharged V6s. One a hybrid and one that's kind of standard, or not standard, but one that's just a turbocharged version. We drove just that one. We didn't drive the I-Force Max, although both of them work really, really well at our altitude, Dad, by them adding the V6 with the turbocharged engines. It still works great, and especially at our altitude, it's fantastic. It's got a nice big cab, Dad, as you know, especially the CrewMax version. It's got a really spacious back seat. It's got the self-closing, self-operating tailgate, which is a great feature that's up and down. Again, you've got some nice apportionments on the inside. As far as the display, Dad, I think it's the really nice big 14-inch display. the model we had, which when you get in it, you're like, whoa, this thing is pretty big and spacious, and it works. It's very easy to use that. It's a nice user-friendly system that they've done a good job at. And that, honestly, on the Tundra, you can get, depending on how you want to equip the Tundra, you can get it for everywhere from kind of the low 40s to the high 80s, right?
SPEAKER 01 :
Wow, big spread.
SPEAKER 02 :
That's just depending on how you want to... How you want to equip it, right? And that's more of a, you know, if you want the SR package, right, which is kind of the most basic, or the Capstone, which is right up there with a lot of the luxurious trim levels. But speaking of the Rally version that we drove, it was nice to have some of those kind of other features that maybe you wouldn't get on a more basic model of the Tundra. And you get it for a relatively decent price. I think that package adds about almost, I think, $8,500, $9,000 more somewhere around there to the price tag as of right now. And it was something that I would definitely consider buying, again, because you can get it kind of on a more base level, but you can add some of those luxurious features without having to option those out differently. So you and I, well, you've driven these new Tundras, Dad, and they've really improved them, especially by changing out those engine options.
SPEAKER 01 :
Yeah, the interior is much better. You get more options than you've ever had in the past. The fuel economy with the new options has gone up. They have had, and there's no secrets here, they've had some engine issues with some of these things, although I will tell you that, yes, as time goes by, like a lot of other manufacturers that are encountering some of these same issues, they will get those things dialed in. So I'm not too concerned about that. Every manufacturer at times has a few struggles with that. I get comments and questions on that on a routine basis. I will say that there are still a lot of loyal, dedicated Tundra drivers out there. In our area here in Colorado, we see a ton of them. It's just one of those models, Richard, just sells very well in this Rocky Mountain region. And I think that alone should show you something. They wouldn't sell as well as they did if it wasn't a vehicle worth buying. And again, yes, they've had their share of problems, so have other vehicles out on the road as well.
SPEAKER 02 :
They absolutely have, Dad. And like you said, they wouldn't sell as many of them if they weren't great. And we've been asking for a – not just us, but a lot of customers have been asking for an improvement or a refreshment and improvement. I think that they did that. And, again, we kind of get different models of these different versions, Dad. And they all kind of have their own things, and we could sit here and kind of spend multiple segments on all the differences. And all that we can say is go out and test drive these things yourself, Dad, because you can kind of see some of those subtle differences here. Maybe you can save money. Maybe you want to spend a little bit more money, right, to differentiate yourself from the next Tundra driving down the road because, again, there's a lot of them out here for good reason.
SPEAKER 01 :
That's right.
SPEAKER 02 :
So with that, I would encourage folks, get out, test drive this dad, see what you like. You can probably get one ordered with all of the different things that you would want on it. And when you do that, let them know that John and Richard Rush from Drive Radio and Rush to Reason sent you.
SPEAKER 01 :

In this episode, we discuss our recent experience with the 2025 Range Rover Velar Dynamic SE. Join us as we explore the luxurious features and minimalist design that make this SUV stand out. With a price that seems surprisingly affordable for its class, we analyze whether this could be the ideal choice for those seeking a compact luxury SUV experience without breaking the bank.
SPEAKER 02 :
All right, I drove recently a 2025 Range Rover Velar Dynamic SE. Now, I will say that upon first glance, you look at this car and think, wow, this is a really, really expensive Range Rover because it looks expensive from the outside. Although, Richard, I will tell you that this car, and again, we typically get cars that are full bells, whistles, the whole nine yards, which this one, by the way, was. But the MSRP on this, $63,000. Now, some would say, man, that's a lot of money. Well, actually, if you look at a full-size SUV, which this is, and you look at one that's got all of the equipment and creature comforts on it, you will typically be higher than $63,000. So I'll say that right off the bat. Great fuel economy, by the way. This one's 2226 with an average of 23, which I was way above the 23 running around town. And I will just say straight up, Richard, minimalistic interior. It's surprisingly nice, but it doesn't have a lot of gadgets, I guess is the best way for me to say that, Richard. Which, by the way, I like the minimalistic end of things. Two-liter turbocharged engine, I will say straight up, at our altitude, 247 horsepower. A little lacking at times, but not so lacking that you wouldn't drive this car on a daily basis and still have a lot of fun with it. So, with that being said, plenty of room inside. Plenty of cargo room. Very luxurious. I mean, it's everything, Richard, that you would expect to come out of a Range Rover that is much higher priced. But in this particular category, it is priced well within its marketplace. Is this a vehicle that I would recommend? If you're looking for a full-size SUV in that low 60K range, which, by the way, right now with some of the deals that are out there, Richard, you could probably buy for a little less than that. Given that, would I look at this car and would it come to one of the top of my list as far as the things that I would want to look at? It absolutely would. And as you know, and you've driven plenty of Land Rover, Range Rover products in the past, typically they are priced much higher than this.
SPEAKER 01 :
I was going to say, $60,000, that's really hard to beat, especially for folks. And a lot of folks, you know who you are, you sort of see these things running around and you're like, man, that's a really pretty car, right? Aesthetically, it's just great. And you're like, man, I don't know if I can afford that. Well, again, this gives you an opportunity, Dad, and we've driven these cars over the years. to maybe get in it, and like you say, from even a simplistic form, right, in terms of some of the gadgets and sort of stuff on the inside, gives you a chance to experience that. So absolutely, it is a great car, especially for people that are in that, you know, maybe two to four household, even one to four, right? You know, just depending on what you're looking for, I think it definitely gives you a great option in that luxury, kind of luxury compact SUV market.
SPEAKER 02 :
Yeah, and again, I want to make sure I'm clear on this, too. This starts at $63,600. Ours completely loaded up. Bells, whistles, the whole nine yards came in at $76,000. Ours had about, I don't know, $13,000 worth of options. But you can get these, and I looked them on the internet. They start in the $63,000. a 636 range yes you can get them fully loaded almost all the way up to 80k so depending upon how you want them fully equipped but again richard in its segment for the market of what you act or for the actual market of what you get in this particular vehicle again my only complaint was i wish i had a little bit more power for the size of vehicle that it is but again would it keep me from buying this vehicle no it would not i would recommend this if you're looking for that full-size suv and really want all of the creature comforts available Look no further. Again, 2025 Range Rover Velar. Ours happened to be the Dynamic SE version. Richard, with that, I appreciate you. Let me say this, too. If you want to test drive one of those, make sure you go to your local Land Rover, Range Rover dealer. Tell them that John and Richard Rush both sent you. Okay, Richard, with all of that being said, we've got a lot of reviews that are on the Internet, or I should say on our website out on the Internet as well. And a lot of these vehicles will go into the used market. And I always want to remind people that you may be looking at one of these that are two, three, five years of age. We probably have a review on that car.
SPEAKER 01 :
We absolutely do. So, yeah, you may be thinking, oh, man, that's maybe a lot now. Well, in a few years when that thing falls in value a little bit or just appreciates like any used car would, come back to the review because, again, a lot of what we say, well, obviously it's not going to change, especially for used models. That's right. So check it out.
