Now, here’s your survival guide for Ready Radio, John Rush. And snowy day today. Ready Radio KLZ 560 live program from November the 8th. So if you’re listening to a replay and… You look back on the calendar and or remember that, yes, we’ve had actually several snowy days in a row here, more snow coming in later this evening. So today I thought we would talk about how to be prepared for such. I know some of what I’ll get into today I could easily do on Drive Radio, although there’s some folks that, you know, are able to listen to this and maybe don’t listen to Drive Radio or can’t or vice versa. I may cross over some of this and always, you know, lines are open. If there’s something you want to contribute, feel free to do so. I’ve seen and witnessed all sorts of things, of course, already in this particular storm. So I thought that’d be a good thing to talk about today is just, you know, what to do to be ready for these types of storms. And most of this being in your vehicle traveling to and from. So we’ll get into some of that today, and as usual, everything else comes up regarding the election and the aftermath of, and I think there was a, just as a side note, I won’t spend a lot of time here, but there were a lot of folks predicting civil unrest if Trump won. I had several people that had texted me that, asked questions along those lines, and so on. And I really didn’t think there was going to be much. In fact, if you go back and listen to some of the programs I had, my daily show and even this show prior to the election, I said that. I had read some things internally where I really feel like, and maybe I’m wrong in this, but I really feel like there were some key individuals in the Democrat Party that probably had a pretty good feeling they weren’t going to win. Now, most parties feel like their candidate is the best and they’re going to win no matter what. I think there was some higher-ups in the Democrat Party that said, yeah, maybe not. I had mentioned numerous times that I’d read some things talking about some of the – Democrat, the higher up Democrats saying, yeah, well, you know, a Trump win isn’t all that bad. We could survive four years of Trump. And I think what they’re looking at is they did it once. Could they do it again? Sure. Economically speaking, it was a very good time for everyone, them included. They may not have liked some of the policies that Donald Trump instituted and some of the Supreme Court justices that were appointed and approved throughout his tenure. But the reality is they really don’t have much to complain about. Actually, I would challenge any Democrat to complain about anything under Donald Trump. What happened on Donald Trump’s watch that made it worse for you as a human being in the United States of America? The answer is nothing. Zero. Anyways, I think there were those inside the Democrat Party that really felt like, yeah, we may not win. This may not pan out the way we’re thinking. In turn, and I mentioned this, There were some key leaders in the last protest movement back in 2016. that are retired, I guess you could say. They’re no longer in that role, in that realm. In some cases, some of the key leaders of those protests have gone on to do other things or flat out have retired. One such individual is doing nothing more than gardening in her backyard. She wants nothing to do with politics whatsoever. And these are true stories. You can go look these up and find these for yourself. So my thought is, Number one, they didn’t have near the organization, and I’m not sure they felt like they were going to win in the first place. Number two, I think they realized that had it not been for COVID, the last go around with Donald Trump and Joe Biden, knowing all of the unrest that had been created really didn’t bode well for them. Remember that even with all of the things that went on with the last election, not this one in 2024, but in 2020, they barely squeaked by. They didn’t win by a whole lot. In fact, there’s reports out there, several, where they did some polling after that and said, if you would have known about the Hunter Biden laptop and the fact that it wasn’t Russian disinformation, but it in fact was true, would that have swayed your vote? And the answer was yes to about five percent, five points, meaning Joe Biden would have lost. without all of the other stuff that potentially went on. And I’m not saying one way or the other what went on, but isn’t it ironic that there’s about 15 million less votes, almost 20 million actually, less votes this time around than last? Just something to think about. I’m not accusing anybody of anything because I don’t know. But it’s ironic. It’s ironic. It hasn’t been explained yet. Now, there are some on the left asking that same question, only making it more like, what did we do? What did the conservatives do to suppress or take away that many votes? Well, as usual, they should be looking at their own camp, not ours. But that’s not what this program is about. I’m not going down that path. My point is I’m not shocked. that there hasn’t been any quote-unquote civil unrest from this election. I think some of that was planned on the Democrat side. My cohort during the week, Andy Pate, has said on more than one occasion, we talked about this this past week, that they are going to be model politicians and citizens right now because they’re already starting to work on 2028. They are trying to prove that they’re better than we are because of J6. Just saying. And those of you that are in that space and understand what I mean, I think you get that. And I’ve talked about J6 in the past, and was it as big of a deal as the left would make it out to be? No, it is not. Not even close. Way, way, way blown out of proportion. Did some people do some things I wouldn’t have done? Yes. On the same token, they did, and should they be punished the way some of them have been punished? No. Absolutely not. So another conversation for another day, and I can get into more of that during the week on the weekday program, Rush to Reason, from 3 to 6 daily. But I want to talk about the snowstorm. And as far as being ready for any kind of a civil war, things along those lines, no, again, as I just said a moment ago, I just don’t see that. And frankly, when it comes to the left, I don’t see much of that anyways because this is the party that isn’t armed. I know some are. I know some Democrats are armed. They’ll even sometimes tell you they aren’t or they’ll be all in for gun control, and yet they are gun-toting just like our side is. But by and large, these are not individuals that are armed and going to be armed and dangerous per se. Even though most mass shootings happen from weirdos on the left, in general, when you talk Civil War and what it takes, no, the left doesn’t have what it takes. Sorry, guys. You guys that are on the left that listen to me, sorry, you just don’t have what it takes. You don’t have the stamina, by the way. That’s a whole other conversation. But let’s get into the snowstorm. It is as I look out to the west. It is snowing as we speak, lightly. It’s going to be coming in heavier. How much do we actually get when this is all said and done depends on where you live. Some of you listening to me, depending upon what part of the signal you’re in, area you’re in, I should say, I’ve gotten text messages in from some of you where you’ve had a ton of snow already, some to the point of being snowed in. So some of you listening already are there. Some of you that aren’t might be. Depends on how this storm ends up turning out and how much snow we actually get. A lot of roads are closed right now as we speak. So some of what I’m going to talk about will relate to that. What happens if you end up in a blockade or you end up having to pull off the highway because it’s closed and now you’re in a city to where, or town, it’s not even a city at that point, a town, whereby everything’s full? Hotels, schools, gyms, et cetera, are all full. Then what? Well, I’ll get into some of that today. So first things first, being the car guy that I am, Is your vehicle ready for the type of weather we have right now? And I will tell you that at least for folks that I see driving on a daily basis and even saw some of these folks today on my way coming to the station, most aren’t. And I get it. The economy’s been tough. This is one thing that I do believe Donald Trump will help change and there’ll be some impacts from. But I understand that times have been tough. Now, I also know because I’ve owned auto repair shops in the past, did that for the majority of my life, still coach automotive shops. I’m still very much in touch with what happens inside of the automotive world. What I will also tell you when it comes to cars is some people prioritize certain things more so than others, meaning some people put priority into maintaining their vehicle while others may put entertainment as a priority more so than their vehicle or doing whatever else they do in the world around them. And that’s more important than maintaining the vehicle. And I’m not judging, just saying that some people, the importance of the vehicle isn’t until it’s broke. Then it becomes high on the list. And, again, just so you know, I mean, I’ve consulted some of these types of individuals in the past over the course of my career. Again, I’ve been in the automotive world since I was a very young man. Boy – I wasn’t even a man, a boy – I started in the automotive industry before I was even a teenager. Some of you are thinking, how can you do that? Well, because I was like 11 or 12. I wasn’t a teenager at that point. Started work. Yeah, I was working for my dad, for my family. Yeah, thank you, Charlie. So, yeah, I started very early. My first full-time summer job, I was 12. The following year I was 13 and was, you know, a lot kid, a lot boy, they called it back then, still do maybe. And I was doing everything from cleaning cars, parking cars, cleaning out. The reason why I’ve never smoked in my entire life is I cleaned a lot of cigarette butts out of everything back in the day. Ashtrays, urinals, you name it, I did it. To the point where I, frankly, to this day, don’t want to see a cigarette. And that has never changed. I guess that leaves a lasting impression when you’re 12, 13 years of age having to clean up after everybody else. So I’ve never had the desire to smoke because of that. So digressing a little bit, but I’ve been around the automotive world for a very, very long time. I’ve consulted a lot of people when it comes to their vehicles. And what I will tell you is some people prioritize maintenance and repairs and keeping their vehicle in top running condition. It’s very high priority to them. And there’s others where it is at the very, very, very last on the list. Everything else comes first. Literally, they look at that car like, I guess I would a hammer, and I’m not so sure that I don’t take care of a hammer better than they do the car. So in everything in between. And by the way, it’s not always a situation of dollars and your income level and so on. I’ve seen some very wealthy people not take care of their car. I’ve seen poor people not take care of their car. I’ve seen poor people take care of their car. And I’ve seen extremely wealthy people take care of their car. So I’ve seen it all. It has nothing to do with literally your income level. Sometimes it does. Some people really want to take care of their car and can’t afford to, and I understand that fully. There’s ways, though, to lessen those expenses, and frankly, proper maintenance does that. You hear me talk about that a ton on Drive Radio. When you properly maintain anything, especially your car, you’ll spend less money on it down the road. But let’s talk about that for a moment. Number one, is your car ready for the type of weather we’re having right now? And here’s my advice on that. If it is, great. We’ll get into some of the things you should even have in the car and so on and so forth, tires, and go down the list. I will also say this. If it isn’t ready, stay home. I know that sounds blunt, but if your car isn’t ready for this kind of weather, rather than getting out in it and having other problems and causing problems for other people, just stay home. If you’re not comfortable driving around and doing what you need to do, for example, I passed about three cars today. I have no idea the background of these people. I can kind of guess, but I don’t know for sure their background. But they’re doing 20 to 25 miles an hour under the speed limit with their hazards on. And when there’s a four lane road and they’re in the lane next to the fast lane, wrong way to do it. If you’re going to do that, you need to be in the far right lane. But frankly, if that’s all the faster you can drive, you probably should be taking side roads and not even be out on the highway because you’re now a hazard to everybody else that’s around you. That’s what I mean by if you’re ill prepared for the weather we have now, stay home, take public transportation. The trains and buses still run. You know, Charlie did that for years and years and years. Rarely do we ever have a time where they’re not running. I mean, it has to be a literal, you know, blizzard snowing sideways for those things to not run, especially the trains. Right, Charlie? They’ll pretty much run. in everything and even the buses it’s rare to not have the buses running they may cut the service back a little bit but they’ll still run my point is if you have you know if you have to go from a to b there’s numerous ways to make that happen rtd train rtd bus some of you that have special needs they’ve even got special needs buses that for free they’ll come get you and do what you need to do and then last but not least you can always call an uber or lyft The rideshare services will pretty much run all the time. There are people that specifically will have a vehicle capable of doing things in the type of weather we have right now that can get you from A to B. They specialize in that. And for a lot of people, they still have to do things. They’re going A to B. They’re, in some cases, coming back from the airport. There’s people in the rideshare business that will make themselves available to get you from A to B if need be. So my point is, if you’re not capable… and or your vehicle is not capable of being out in this kind of weather then just stay home this is ready radio we’re trying to help you be ready for all of the what ifs of life and like a lot of other things we talk about during this particular program if you’re not ready don’t get involved it’s that simple if you can’t be out in this weather don’t be and i cannot stress that enough and Lastly, before I go to break, for the love of God, we only use hazards when you’ve got a problem on the side of the road. We do not use them driving down the road in this country. I know in other countries they do. If there’s a puddle, they’ll turn on the hazards. That’s not how this works in our country. We only use the hazards when there’s an actual emergency happening. You’ve pulled over to the side of the road. You’re letting people know you’ve got a problem with your car. You’ve got a flat tire. You’re trying to get off to the side of the road or the next exit. But you do not drive in the next to the left lane with the hazards on 20 miles under the speed limit because you’re afraid to drive. That’s not how this works in this country. For those of you that are listening to me or even know anybody along those lines, please pass that information along. What I’m saying is getting to be a larger and larger problem, at least here in the state of Colorado or in our city limits here in the Denver metro area. It’s happening more and more often, and I just shake my head every time I see it. We don’t drive that way. In fact, you’re now attracting attention and becoming more of a hazard because your hazards are on than what you should be. And last but not least, for those of you that are in the tow truck business, some of you are listening to me are or know somebody that is. Please tell your drivers to stop being lazy. Let me explain. When you see a tow truck that has its flashing lights on and there’s a car hooked up behind it, Normally what’s happened is they have their emergency lights on because they’ve been too lazy to put the additional lights on the car. This car may not have its own brake lights, turn signals, the ability to make those work behind the truck. So the tow truck puts typically magnet-mounted lights on the back of the car, and you’re not supposed to run the emergency lights. You’re supposed to do what I just said. But tow truck drivers are lazy. Sorry, they are. Not all, but some are. And they will flip on the emergency lights and not do what I just said. That is not how it’s supposed to work. Again, you with your emergency lights on are making yourself a distraction and potentially even causing other accidents and things to happen because you’re rolling down the road with your emergency lights on. Again, not how that’s supposed to work. I’ve been involved in that industry, again, my entire life, and that’s not how that’s supposed to work. So if you’re a tow truck driver, owner, owner of, or know somebody that is, please pass that along. I don’t know when that started. It’s gotten worse and worse as time has gone by, I think because there’s just more and more lazy drivers. And I get it. It’s hard to find people to work in general. But holy cow, train your people how to do this correctly. Because running down the road with your emergency lights on is not how that’s supposed to work. Those are literally just lazy tow truck drivers that are not handling things correctly. And I appreciate those guys. There’s times where you’re going to need them. Something happens and you need those guys. My fear with people that run around, and this is true with any other type of emergency type vehicles, any of you that run around construction, whatever, with your emergency lights on, you’re making it to where when there really is an emergency, nobody cares. It’s getting to the point when you see flashing lights, most everybody just ignores it and moves on because there’s so many of them now that nobody even cares anymore. That’s the problem with running emergency lights all the time. So even some of you plow drivers that are going to be out and about right now plowing snow and doing other things, if you’re in a parking lot and want to run them, more power to you. I wouldn’t, but more power to you. And I’ll explain in a moment why I wouldn’t do that. But if you want to run them in a private parking lot, be my guest. The minute you leave that parking lot, you better shut them off. Again, so many of you guys are lazy and don’t do that. You just go from place to place to place and those emergency lights are running the entire time. And again, not how that’s supposed to work. Technically, you’re supposed to get a ticket for that. Won’t happen, but you’re supposed to. Because it’s unlawful for you to do that. Now, really quick and closing out that particular section. Here’s why I wouldn’t and don’t run emergency lights on my vehicles. you are now attracting attention to yourself and actually making it worse for you in that parking lot than if you were running incognito. You’re actually making it more attractive for people to come and see what you’re doing and be in the way and potentially get backed into or whatever by running the lights versus the opposite. It’s not what you think. Those lights are not a detractor, and they’re not warning people to stay away. If anything, they’re telling people, come see what I’m doing. You’re not helping yourself by running those is my point. So stop. And this is, again, this is somebody that I’ve plowed snow for 30 years or longer. You’re not helping yourself by running those beacons. You’re actually making it worse for yourself and even those around you when it’s all said and done. I’m sure I’m going to get some flack for that and get some arguments on that. But the reality is what I just told you is the truth. you’re not going to help yourself when it’s all said and done. So these are some practical tips I know, and I know what I just went through maybe doesn’t have a lot to do with the whole Ready Radio end of things. It’s getting resistive, so it is still buried in my driveway. I got my second Toyota Highlander out of a different snowdrift and just now drove about a mile down the road.

said it isn’t worth being out and got turned around and came back going back home huh yeah and for a lot of for a lot of folks listening and i’ve had a few pictures sent in like what you sent eric along those same lines so those of you that are listening it’s already happening some have already gotten that amount of snow and eric as you know there’s more on the way yeah yeah no and i grew up here i’ve been through blizzards in the past and uh

That’s right. That’s right. Yeah. And as you know, I have as well. And, I mean, I don’t know, again, given what I do for a living, I can’t think of a time, Eric, where I was ever just flat 100% snowed in. I’d have to really go back and think about that. I can’t think of a time. But I’ve always been in that world where I didn’t really have any choice but to be out in it.

Yeah, when you work it, that’s… Honestly, I would have liked the alternative, but I never had that opportunity.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah. Yeah, no, if I had my four-wheel drive pickup, I would probably have added more weight to the rear and still gone. But the Highlander doesn’t have the same ground clearance. No, no. Just catching a few of the drifts that are… You know, and really quick, Eric, I’m glad you brought that up.
SPEAKER 05 :
What I said a moment ago about having the proper vehicle, you’re dovetailing right into what I was saying. So for those of you listening, as the weather gets worse or you end up, depending upon what part of the listening audience you’re in, we cover a five, six, seven state region. So those of you listening, if you find yourself in a predicament there, the reality, Eric, is you might have all the traction in the world, but to your point a moment ago, if you don’t have the right ground clearance, all you do is float on top of the snow and it doesn’t matter anyways.

Yeah. Yeah. No, actually part of the reason I went down the road was to help, uh, try and help the neighbor. And, uh, she’s too snowed in also. We couldn’t even get through her driveway to go help her. And, uh, so she’s, She’s got goats and stuff, so she’s just like, yeah, I’ll just throw the food over the fence.

That’s all you can do. That’s miserable. And as you know, Eric, that’s just miserable. But, you know, what we talk about a lot on this program is, you know, being ready for these sorts of things that come along. And as I drove down today, Eric, and I’m… Again, I don’t know people individually, I don’t know their background, don’t know how they vote or anything else along those lines, but the amount of still ill-prepared individuals when we literally live in a modern society with so many things at our disposal, and maybe that’s why, Eric, maybe because we have so many things, we’re less prepared now than ever.

I think we actually have to chalk it up to a lack of proper education also. I mean, even growing up here, we didn’t have a lot of training on things. It wasn’t until I came back from the Army that they actually had Papa Bear. I don’t know if you remember him. He’s a survivalist type guy. Yes, I do. Yeah, he actually came out to Lockheed Martin and taught a class and That’s when I put my first crew winter kit together for a car. And actually, I almost had to use some of what he talked about one time. I was, of all places, on Mount St. Helens and had come up to where the snow was stopping me. So I went to back up and do a three-point turn, and the road gave way under the car. And so I’m sitting there teeter-tottering. And, you know, I mean, it’s a rainforest area. There was no wood or anything to jam under the car. Right. I finally found some stones. You know, I took the tire jack and put it under the rear trans axle. Yep, that’s smart. Jacked it up, got the front tires onto the road, drove forward off the jack. And did that about three times. But, you know, the whole time I’m sitting there thinking, okay, if I can’t get out of here and nobody’s coming, I’m going to take that spare tire and some fuel out of the filter or whatever. And that’s going to make a heck of a smoke cloud for me to get attention.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah, true. Good point. Eric, thankfully, you’ve got enough mental resources or mental capacity to be able to do that. Again, at times, and you’re right, a lot of it is lack of education. We haven’t taught people some of these things. We teach them to literally go on their phone and look up pretty much whatever they want to, and that’s fine until that’s no longer an option.
SPEAKER 09 :
Oh, yeah, definitely no cell towers out there.
SPEAKER 05 :
Right. And on top of that, Eric, I think just the other thing, too, that a lot of people miss. Even though you may have said information, phone, whatever, without some basic mechanical skills, I guess is the way to say it, Eric, what you just did, for example, I’m sorry to say this, and I don’t take pride in this, but how many people, Eric, today can even get the jack out and use it properly? Yeah. Too few. Thank you. Yeah, that’s the problem. Yeah, you’re right. I mean, so many of them are used to just, you know, taking the phone and calling AAA or doing this or doing that, that they don’t even know how to take the jack out. I mean, they may not even know where it is, Eric.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah, yeah. No, well, the first time I ever had to lower a tire from underneath the vehicle, I was like, where do I put the thing to lower this tire down? You know, the very first time. And that was on my pickup. And then once you learn that, it’s like, oh, wow.
SPEAKER 05 :
It’s second nature then. Side note, just as an explanation of how you work through some things along those lines. I was moving some things around the other day, and I had to move my gun safe just a little bit. And I went ahead and emptied it out, and I still needed to move it around. And they’re heavy, and I’m by myself. And, you know, there’s only so much you can do with an 800-pound gun safe by yourself. And so I’m thinking to myself, you know – I think if I had, you know, a jack that I could use sideways, I could actually put that against the wall and move things around. I only needed to move it about a foot. And I’m like, I think I could figure out a way to do this. And so I’m thinking, okay, what jack do I have that I know I could use on its side and make work? And I’m thinking, I can’t use a bottle jack, can’t use a floor jack because none of those will work, you know, as you know, laying on their side. So, you know, what am I going to use? And I’m thinking, ah, you know what? Regular mechanical jack to lift your truck up will do that just fine. So I run to the truck. I grab the screw jack out. I was a little bit even wiser and figured out a little attachment that I could put on the end of my cordless drill where I could actually spin it in and out and not even have to do it by hand. And I got everything moved around like I needed to. But when I was done, and I’m not trying to brag or anything, Eric, but I’m thinking when I’m done, how many people today, have the ability to even think through that process and realize what they may have on hand to do those things with.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah, way too few. And some of that, though, is that they’re just, like I said, the school system does not challenge people.
SPEAKER 05 :
We do not teach that. No, you are correct. We have no more shop class. We have no more auto mechanics. We don’t do anything along those lines. We don’t even do home ec anymore, Eric, and we wonder why kids can’t cook.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah, yeah. No, it’s insane. You know, talking about changing tires and stuff, but my own wife can’t do it. She doesn’t want to learn. You know, it’s like, I’ll show you. And she’s like, no, I don’t want to. I’ll just call the insurance or, you know, whoever. Like I said, AAA.
SPEAKER 05 :
And again, that’s fine until they’re not available.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah, no. She always had our boys because I taught our boys how to do it. That’s good. You know, they’ve even helped other people. I know for a fact.

You know, Catherine’s like, oh, yeah, Caleb helped some lady in the church parking lot change a tire today. And I’m like, that’s good to hear.

And great example, folks, of where you’ve got to be resourceful. And even Eric testifying that, you know, there’s a guy that I can tell you right now, I’ve talked to him enough times where he knows how to drive in the snow, go from A to B and all of that. But without the proper equipment, which he was just explaining a moment ago, does not have. Yeah, just stay home. Figure out what you need to do. Now, this goes back to a lot of the other programs that we’ve had on Ready Radio in the past, where staying home means you’ve got food and hopefully the heat’s on and the water’s on and you’ve got power and so on. But if not, do you have enough resources to make it through the next 24 to 48 hours just in case? I would hope so, although when you look at the lines at the supermarket on days like today or even yesterday – You often wonder, do people really have what they need or not? I mean, I’m still amazed at times the amount of people that aren’t prepared in that. And within just the announcement of a storm coming, they’re literally jamming the grocery stores, Costco, Sam’s, whatever it is. happens to be. So at any rate, we’ll come back. I’ve got a few more tips for you. But to Eric’s point a moment ago, yeah, make sure you’re ready. Have the right things in the car. Have the right car. If you don’t, then don’t go out. And I can tell you over all the years of helping people that have either been stuck or had problems or whatever. And again, you know, being out in most storms, plowing snow, doing the things that I’ve done for the past, you know, 50 plus years. Because even before that, I was out with my dad doing things. Reality is, of all the people that we’ve helped over the years, it’s never the person that’s fully prepared you’re helping. Again, as I said earlier, if you don’t really have any reason to be out, and I say this as much for my own self-benefit, John, when it’s all said and done, because as somebody that’s trying to clear snow in parking lots and so on, the less people around, the better. So I’m a little self-serving in that way.

By the way, as a side note, I try to be self-conscious of even the things that I don’t take care of. So here at the station, we have a parking garage, and I could have parked outside. It’s not snowing that heavy, but I thought I’ll park inside. A, I don’t have to wipe any snow off, and B, I’m keeping it more clear for the guys that are going to come by and maybe clear snow between now and 5 o’clock.
SPEAKER 07 :
Sure. So here’s the thing. You were talking about getting your kit ready for whether it’s your car or anything. Correct. I was in Sierra Trading Post last night just looking through. I mean, you could put a good survival kit together for your car for less than 50 bucks. There was so many. They had a headlamp that was about 10 bucks. The space blankets were $3. You know what I mean? The better quality ones, not the real cheap ones that are like $1. The ones that might last two trucks. But the little things, the good heavy wool socks were on special for like $12, $13. That’s one of the things I always do is put an extra pair of socks on. in your kit because if you do get stuck and your feet are wet and your boots are wet at least you can take your boots and socks off and put some dry socks on, then that’ll help keep you warm.
SPEAKER 05 :
Absolutely. Yeah, I mean, I think, you know, extra, you know, one of the things this time of the year that I think folks should just have, period, whether you’ve got a, you know, back seat, back area, trunk, whatever the case, John, having, you know, to your point, throw an extra set of boots, throw some extra socks in there, throw an extra jacket in if you had to. I mean, reality is if you had to camp out in your car for, you know, a 24 to, you know, 36 hour period, could you?
SPEAKER 07 :
Yep, a couple of protein bars or snack bars, Clif bars, whatever brands you like.
SPEAKER 05 :
It’s funny you say that. I mean, my risk of being stuck and not making it home tonight is probably ultra, ultra, ultra slim, but I still stuck like four of those in my bag leaving the house this morning, John.
SPEAKER 07 :
You know, just some kind of something you can eat. You know, everybody buys bottled water now, even if you don’t need it. Like, my well water tastes so good that, you know, I’m not going to drink bottled water in the house. But I have it in case you’re in an emergency. The power goes out. The generator goes out. I got drinking water. Throw a couple of, you know, half liter bottles of water in your car. So what if they freeze and thaw? They’re not going to hurt anything. And then you’ve got some water in your car, you know, if you’re just in, like, snowed in and stuff. Because… Don’t expect if they, like the folks, I felt bad for them, that were getting sent off of I-70 because it was close to the Kansas border going east. I mean, don’t expect those convenience stores and truck stops to have water and stuff because they’re going to run out quick.
SPEAKER 05 :
Right. Absolutely. Yeah. Point being, John, be self-sufficient. Don’t rely on some small town to have to fill in for, you know, whatever it is, beef jerky or a phone charger or whatever. I mean, reality is have all of those things in your car ready to go just in case.
SPEAKER 07 :
Here’s the other thing. You see a lot of people today wearing puffy down jackets. Right. And they are great. They keep you warm. But they’re not very waterproof. And down doesn’t keep you warm if it gets wet.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah, they are not waterproof at all. Let’s make sure we’re clear on that. You need an outer shell on those because they are not.
SPEAKER 07 :
What I was going to say is… pick up a $20 rain jacket. Frog togs, I don’t know if you’ve ever seen them, they’re not… The best quality you’re going to buy, you can spend $200 on a rain jacket if you really wanted to. But they’ll keep you dry, and if you slip that on over like a puffy jacket, you’re not going to get cold. Correct. Because that hard shell is going to break the wind, too.
SPEAKER 05 :
Right. And for those of you listening, as you know, John, that’s the one thing that’s different today than when you and I were kids. The amount of… equipment, you know, jackets, et cetera, that you can buy now versus what we had as kids and the cost of what they are. I mean, when you and I were kids, literally, for all of you listening, I’m not exaggerating, to buy a good down jacket that kept you warm, John, when you and I were kids, and this was at those… A couple of hundred. Yeah, a couple of hundred bucks, and that was at that time. That’d be a thousand bucks or more today. Yeah.
SPEAKER 07 :
Oh, yeah, and you know what’s funny is I watch a lot of backpacking and YouTube videos, and there’s a lot of it where they’ll do gear comparisons, and there’s this one guy who lives, he winter camps outside of Calgary, okay? You know how cold it is? And he compared $100 to a $400 down jacket, and he said, except for the fact that that the $400 had a couple of extra bells and whistles. The $100 one kept them just as warm. So you don’t have to spend a ton of money either. If you’ve got, like I’ve got a fleece, If you got an old fleece vest laying around, maybe somebody gave it to you and it’s got, you know, I don’t know, BG Services on it or something. Some logo, some company gave it to you. It’s a fleece vest. Throw it in your car. That fleece vest underneath your coat will give you that nice extra layer of warmth. So. Just little things like that is what’s going to keep you surviving. But the water and the food, throw three or four bottles of water in your survival box or anything. I know my wife, because she’s got the truck and her bed locks, she’s got one of those big plastic totes, and she keeps water and clothes and extra stuff, and it all stays dry. It’s in the back. It’s out of the way in her truck. Keeps it in the back of her truck’s lock so nobody’s going to take it. She’s got extra stuff. She’s got an old pair of hiking boots in it, all kinds of stuff like that, an extra set of clothes. If, God forbid, she gets stuck somewhere and she wants clean clothes, she’s got to change her clothes, warm clothes, a sweater. Remember, oh, here’s the other thing. Even if you don’t have a full survival gear, say you’re going out to dinner and you’re dressing up. Make sure in the car you have stuff to keep you warm if something happens on the way home.
SPEAKER 05 :
Great idea. Yeah, some of you guys that are listening that may go to an event or do this or do that, by all means, yeah, absolutely.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, if you’re dressing up, fine. You’re going out, you’re going somewhere nice, maybe you’re wearing nice clothes. Throw some warm clothes in the car, even if it’s hiking boots, some socks, and, you know, the other thing you can find is you could get for under $100 a synthetic pair of, like, ski pants, bibs. That’ll keep you really warm. And you can pull them on over just about anything, and they would be warm enough to get you through the night and just… But the other thing, cheap, very cheap, was in there last night. I’m throwing a bone to Sierra. Knit caps made of wool, less than $10, and gloves were less than $20. Awesome.
SPEAKER 05 :
That’s good to know. No, that’s a good tip, John.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, before you go spend a whole lot of money, go to the cheap places and… See what you can shave because, you know, if it’s going to sit in your car all winter and you’re not going to use it, why buy the best? Right. Right.
SPEAKER 05 :
Good point. Good point. John, you have a good day. You too, man. Stay safe, John, and stay warm. And, by the way, that includes all the rest of you. Okay, a few more things vehicle-wise. Number one, tires. I can’t stress that enough. You could have the right vehicle with bad tires, and it’s now become the wrong vehicle. And I mean that. You could have the best of four-wheel drives with wrong tires. Bald tires. By the way, there’s a difference. I’ve seen many a truck today running around with the wrong tire. Not bald, but the wrong tire. And I can explain more of that tomorrow on Drive Radio. You guys should tune in. I’ll get into that. I’ve seen numerous trucks today running around with the wrong tire, wondering why they’re having a hard time keeping the vehicle in the lane. And I’m not exaggerating. So you can have the right vehicle, wrong tires, and it’s now the wrong vehicle. You can also have a vehicle that maybe isn’t the best of vehicles, but with the right tire, actually can do very well in the type of weather that we’re having right now. To John’s point, everything from gloves, blanket, first aid kit, of course, ice scraper, snow brush. I’m a big one on, and they make really nice aluminum, lightweight folding shovels. Great idea to have. They can get you out of a tight spot at times, and in most cases, you’ll be using it more for someone else. Then you will yourself. Those of you guys that have trucks, a tow strap and a clevis are a must. Again, not necessarily for you, but to help others out that you might need to help out with. And I think also, and we don’t talk near enough about these because they’re sort of quote unquote antiquated, but a good flare kit. You’d be surprised how well they work, especially when things are dimly lit, it’s snowing sideways. Flares just have an advantage over anything else that’s reflective. They just give you the ability to be seen more so than anything else. And on top of that, you talk about starting fires and doing things along those lines, something about a flare that, again, you just cannot replace. And as a side note, they’re really inexpensive. They are not expensive. They’re not super expensive at all, and they make them now in a nice little kit where they come in a bag and so on, and they’re really simple to just throw in the back of the car. Super easy as far as that goes. So last but not least, make sure your vehicle’s properly maintained. Right now, windshield washer fluid, making sure everything’s topped off. You’ve got good air pressure in the tires. You know, on and on we go, and if you don’t have the ability to do that, I’ve got many a sponsor on my Saturday program, Drive Radio, that can help you with that.
