Yes. And I don’t know. You might have covered this already. Turned in late. But I was wondering about this fuel contamination. As I understand it, diesel fuel got mixed with gasoline.
SPEAKER 03 :
That’s correct. At the terminal, yes.
SPEAKER 10 :
So that was more than one truck that took that up. Yes, it was. Okay. Well, doesn’t Costco use top-tier gas?
SPEAKER 21 :
They do.
SPEAKER 10 :
And King Soopers doesn’t.
SPEAKER 21 :
That’s correct.

So how did they… They apparently use the same gas for both stations, both constellations.
SPEAKER 03 :
Well, yeah, the way the terminal works is they’ve got the ability at the terminal to mix in whatever additives are going to that particular station, if you would, or that particular vendor. Maybe would be the best way to say that. So if it’s top tier, they’re doing something that they’re not doing at King Soopers and so on, and all that’s done at the terminal. And what I understand what somebody texted me last week on is all of that is done, quote, unquote, digitally. In other words, that’s all pre-programmed in accordingly on the front side. So that’s why there was some sort of a most likely computer mix-up given the fact that there were multiple trucks because it’s now up to, you know, 30-some stations were contaminated. So evidently, Bill, there was some sort of a software, you know, mix-up. You know, who knows? Somebody – I don’t know how that works at the terminal. I guess I should take a tour of the terminal someday. I probably could do that, but I never have, so I don’t know exactly how that works.
SPEAKER 06 :
So if I understand it, they take just a base unleaded, they put that in, then they’ll throw the attitudes in that particular truck. Correct. It gets mixed up as you’re waiting. Correct. Exactly right.
SPEAKER 10 :
Oh, okay, because I was saying, well, if they use the same fuel, it would be top tier and not top tier all mixed together. But they must add it. After it was contaminated, they must add it after that to different.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, they probably put that additive in that diesel, probably.
SPEAKER 10 :
Yeah, I was just wondering about that. That’s a good question.
SPEAKER 03 :
I’ve had that question even on the text line, Bill. So, no, that’s a good question. Nothing wrong with that at all. It’s not a dumb question at all. Which, that’s where I think, unfortunately, even for people that might read some of these articles and so on, they would be under the impression that all of the fuel is the same because of what you just said a moment ago. I’m sure there’s people out there reading some of these articles thinking, well, wait a minute, I’m reading that it’s the same for Costco, Shell, King Soopers, and so on, meaning everybody gets the same fuel. No, that’s not necessarily the case. The base, quote-unquote, the base stock that was being loaded into the truck was probably that that was contaminated, and then they did their additives and whatever else they do. And, again, I’ve never seen the terminal. Some of you guys listening in that text me, you have. You know exactly how this works and can explain that better than I. But no, Bill, that base was all contaminated no matter where it was going is what happened.

Oh, okay. Well, that makes sense. Yeah, I got GASIC. King Soopers, the day of, supposedly, it was contaminated, but I haven’t had a problem, so it seemed to be running fine. My wife’s Camry hadn’t had an issue with it, so I guess we missed the contamination, hopefully. Good.
SPEAKER 03 :

Okay. Well, that was just a question.
SPEAKER 03 :
No, Bill, I appreciate it. No, great, great question. Somebody just texted in, and I’ve got some comments on this, said, you know, I’m on John’s side about personal responsibility. However, these rental car companies, if they don’t watch what they’re doing, they’re going to regulate themselves out of not being able to charge a loss of use when they take advantage of the situation. I can’t deny that. Now, here’s the other thing that’s going to start happening with rental car companies. And I’ve got somebody that I actually am working very closely with, a good friend of mine, and the Turo end of things. And some of you know what Turo is, some of you don’t. We’re going to explain that here in the not-too-distant future. But Turo is a… It’s sort of like an Uber for car or sorry, it’s like Airbnb for cars. So you can take your car, put it in a Turo, rent that car out. There’s certain requirements that it has to meet. You have to be a host and so on. But you essentially can take your car and rent it. Or I’ve got other options that we’ll get into here in the not too distant future as to how you could place your car in there. And here’s my point. Turo is getting bigger and bigger and bigger all the time, much like Airbnb cut into the hotel business. Turo is going to cut into the rental car business because Turo is one of those companies now where you can rent anywhere. You could find a Turo car down the street. from your house you could find one at the airport you can find one near where your repair shop is you can find them literally all over depending upon where that particular quote-unquote host is and you can pick your car just like you can pick your car from avis or hertz in other words you can look at how old is the car how new is the car is it a luxury car is it an suv are you going to take it up skiing do you have family coming into town you know whatever the case may be and the key with turo is it’s less money and more flexible than what you’re going to find at the rental car company so point for this particular texter is i don’t disagree that they’ll regulate themselves out of doing this or you’re going to just find more competition from the likes of turo and they’ll have to change some of their model around some become more competitive because turo will start cutting into what they’re doing just like airbnb did in a lot of cases with the hotel industry so you’re going to see more and more on the toro end of things i’ll be talking about that further here in the not too distant future because i’ll give you guys opportunities to not only learn more about that but how does it work on your end if you want to place a car how does that work and so on bottom line that’s going to be or that is one of the answers to what a lot of these rental car companies are doing in regards to quote unquote gouging because I’ll tell you straight up, in a lot of cases, yes, they are gouging. Yes, they’re taking advantage. The fact that a rental car company has no incentive to get that car back on the road for loss of use because they know they’re going to get that money out of you or the insurance company anyways, yeah, there is no incentive for them to get that thing processed quickly at all. Why would they? They’re guaranteed a return on that car now that it’s been damaged and it’s going to have something done to it. They’re guaranteed a return at that point. Where is their incentive to get that in and out faster? It could be just sitting on the lot waiting for somebody to rent it. Yeah, why would they care? I mean, at the end of the day, they’re not going to sign off on that car being good to go until they absolutely have to because they’re guaranteed some return on that at that point in time. I was a former insurance agent for years, and I sold my agency years ago. But I have a little bit different viewpoint on car rental coverage. Sure, go ahead. Changed my tune because something had happened to me, and I have two different scenarios. If you’ve got a minute, I’ll tell you.
SPEAKER 03 :
Go right ahead.
SPEAKER 09 :
Number one, a couple years ago, I rented a car, and I drove it from – Denver to L.A. I mean, not L.A., to Las Vegas. And I was going to drop it off there and fly back. Well, going across Utah, a deer ran out. And, no, let me back up. So I did buy the coverage to a car rental company. A deer ran out, hit the tire, blew the tire out. I thought, oh, my God. All right, all they had was a bicycle donut tire in there. And, you know, there’s no cell service in certain parts of Utah.
SPEAKER 21 :
That’s right.
SPEAKER 09 :
So a state policeman came by, and he said, hey, I’ll help you out. And he nursed me, and he gave me an escort into – it wasn’t St. George. It was somewhere. So I went to a discount tire. And I bought a new tire so I could continue to Vegas. Well, then when I got to Vegas to drop the car rental off, they said, oh, well, we know if you got a new tire, it doesn’t match the other tires. We’re going to charge you for all new tires because they got a match. I said, sorry, I bought the coverage, the road hazard and everything else. I just handed the key and walk away. Okay. Now, that’s one scenario. The other scenario is if by chance you’re in an at-fault accident, rent a car. Now, I know you’re a good driver. I am too. It would go against your car insurance if you did not buy their insurance. It would go against them.
SPEAKER 21 :
That’s right.
SPEAKER 09 :
issue, and if it’s your fault, you’d be held liable for five years with higher rates, this, that, and whatever. But if you buy their coverage, and you total the car out, or you’re in a car accident, you go up to them, you hand them the keys, and say, this is a private contract I have between you and the car rental company. My insurance company knows nothing about the accident. The only way they would find out about the accident… is that they ran an MBR and it showed that you were at fault. Your insurance company doesn’t find out. You never know. Your rates don’t go up. But it’s a private contract between you and, like, Enterprise or whatever.
SPEAKER 03 :
That’s right.
SPEAKER 09 :
That’s just my viewpoint.
SPEAKER 03 :
You’re right. And then one other layer I want to add on to that, because I was reading through the top of the hour of my American Express Platinum card, which does basically the same thing, John, that you’re talking about that the rental car company does. I think it’s up to $300,000. I was looking at even in medical and so on, and there’s limits on what it’ll do for the car itself, etc. So you need to read all of your fine print. Essentially, depending upon you guys that are out there listening and what cards you have, read all of your fine print on each card. And then my recommendation is if you want to cover it that way and not buy their insurance because you feel like you’ve got enough coverage, then knock your socks off. Just know your fine print.
SPEAKER 09 :
Correct. That is correct. So, you know, I don’t rent cars as often as you do, but I figure it’s worth the extra $25 a day or whatever. And if I have any issues, are they… And you know well enough to know, I know it’s been brought up on your show, that you rent a car and you turn it in, and two or three people rent the car after you. A lot of times, the car rental companies will try to come back to you if there’s damage.
SPEAKER 21 :
That’s true.
SPEAKER 09 :
Even though you’ve inspected it and take pictures on your own, they’ll come back, well, you know, they try to collect… any way they can, you know, from chip to windshield.
SPEAKER 03 :
No, John, you are right. And the texture that said if they’re not careful, they’re going to basically regulate themselves out of doing some of the things that even you’re talking about right now. And I can’t disagree with that. And I think the other thing that is going to become a factor in the not-too-distant future is as you see a company like, you know, Turo, which again is Airbnb for cars, when you see them continue to grow and get larger and have more of an impact, as you know, John, competition breeds excellence. They will have no choice but to address some of the things that you’re talking about.
SPEAKER 09 :
Absolutely, absolutely. But I agree with you, you know, most of the time, but I just do that.
SPEAKER 03 :
No, no, and you bring up some great points, and this is something for all of you listening. I am not telling you what to do when you go rent a car. You need to really know, heading into it, what can you handle on your own, self-insurance-wise is what I’m saying, John, at the end of the day. If you feel like you can handle some of this stuff on your own, then be my guest. If on the same token, a loss-of-use thing would be a huge issue to you, then you better buy their insurance.
SPEAKER 09 :
Absolutely. You’re so correct. All right. Good show, guys.

No, John, I appreciate it. And you make some great comments because all of you listening, yes, you need to know specifically, and I did this years ago, what’s your insurance company going to do? What’s your credit card company going to do? Which credit card company, by the way, is it that you’re going to use? Because even in American Express, each one of their… issuing cards from gold to platinum to whatever each one of them is different in their benefits and a lot of that by the way is based upon the fact that you’re paying a different annual fee for each one of the cards i just mentioned so typically speaking not always but typically speaking the higher the fee the more benefits you’re getting because in a way you’re sort of buying quote unquote that insurance through the fee of the card to be able to do some of the things that I just mentioned. But for all of you listening, yeah, when you go to rent a car, and this is true even when a car is being provided to you, but your name is still on the contract. So what I mean by that is you’re in an accident, and maybe the other insurance company is buying you a car, renting you a car, I should say. They’re the one flipping the bill. Well, it’s still going to be in your name because that company, even though they’re paying the bill or reimbursing you, you’re still renting in your name. So that’s another one of those situations where personally for me in that scenario, I would make sure they’re covering the insurance. I wouldn’t even think about it because I’m not paying the bill anyway. So if it’s $25 or $30 a day extra for the rental and it’s covering all of the insurance and the other insurance company is picking up the tab, buy it. So that’s a scenario where I wouldn’t do anything different than that. Go ahead and let the other company, the other insurance company, or the other person that’s flipping the bill, I should say, maybe it’s them personally, maybe it’s the insurance company, whatever the case may be, I would go ahead and add that insurance into the contract at that point in time because then you’re back to what Bill just said a moment ago. If something happens, you just hand them the keys and walk away. And given the fact you’re not covering that, yeah, by all means, make sure they are. Because you have no idea how they’re even paying. So you’re typically not paying the bill they are. So you just add that insurance in and off you go. Now, that might be a negotiation thing between you and said company and determining who’s going to pay this, who’s not going to pay it, and so on. But, no, the insurance thing is really – the rental car side, I should say, is a really big deal. Read the fine print. Know exactly what you need to be insured for when it’s all said and done to make sure that you are – covered okay make sure that you are covered i also just got a note from my from my turtle friend a turtle can’t come after guests unless we report the damage within 24 hours so back to bill’s comment about two or three renters later they find something and they want to come all the way back to you a turtle will not do that turtle will not do that So there you go. And, again, we’re going to learn more about that here in the coming weeks on how that works because it’s a great alternative and a great competition to the existing rental car companies that are out there. Again, much like Airbnb is for the hotels, they’re doing the same thing on that end of things. All right, we’ve got a break we’re going to take right now. We’ve got another half hour left. All right, two text messages that came in. Let me answer these in order. One said, I had a friend that had a rental in Lincoln, Nebraska. It was a kid of a friend. Last year, tree fell on the rental, and he was cleaned out, monetarily speaking. That’s sad because, again, it doesn’t have to be that way. The conversations we’ve been having and so on, yeah, it doesn’t have to be that way. So that’s sad because it doesn’t have to be that way. But that’s a great example of what can happen if you’re not prepped on the front side. Okay, here’s a question I said I would answer on air. Daughter’s looking for a car with a payment of about $300. She is now driving a 2002 Subaru Forester with about 210,000 miles. What are our suggestions? That’s a big…
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, the 300 is not a lot of money.
SPEAKER 03 :
The 300 is not a lot of money, and she’s got a little bit of money in what she’s driving, although I hate to say a 2002 Forester with 200,000 miles on it is a $2,500 car at best. And I say $2,500 because you don’t buy much for under $2,500. So trust me, you can get $2,500 out of that car. So if you think about… If it’s paid for, you’ve got $2,500 that you potentially could put towards another car. At $300 a month, and I would have to do a quick calculation of this, so give me one second here. This text message just came in, so go ahead, Steve.
SPEAKER 06 :
You might have to be looking at a lease to get that payment that low. That’s pretty challenging.
SPEAKER 03 :
It is, and so really quick, I’m going to plug this in here. So let me see if I can go backwards on this. So if we looked at, say, a four-year note, most used car loans are going to be probably 9% right now. If you did a $15,000 loan, that’s $373,000. So let me lower that to $10,000. We’re 248, so you’re probably going to be around $13,000 or so. Yeah, that’s 323 a month, so probably $12,000. So a $12,000 car is basically what she’s going to look at. So what that means is, though, she could buy probably a $14,000 to $15,000 car with her car being a decent trade if they’d give her that much. So now you’re looking at a car in that $14,000, $15,000 range. Here’s my suggestion. Ridgeline Auto Brokers. They specialize in cars in that range. Give Justin up there a call right now. Find out what he’s got. He would take that other car on trade as well because he’s got typically places to go with that 2002 because he’s got clients that are looking for those types of cars. So my answer to you would be call Justin at Ridgeline. Find out what he can do for you. You’re his client. You’re his customer right now on this end of things. You’re exactly what he deals with on a regular basis. So give him a call and find out what he can do for you. And what about financing through him? He can do all that as well.

Recently purchased about six months ago, a 2013 Silverado, and it’s just a two-wheel drive, but it’s got the 5.3 with the flex fuel, I think it’s an Ecotec engine. And so when you’re driving down the road, it switches from four-cylinder, you know, from eight-cylinder, four-cylinder and back, which I can hear it and I can feel it when it switches. And, you know, if you’re on a real… level road with no wind, it’ll stay in four-cylinder. But Colorado, it seems like the wind’s always blowing, and it switches back and forth so much. And I have a friend who runs a shop, and he says he can disable that. I mean, there’s a charge for doing it. Or it’ll just stay in eight-cylinder. I was wanting your opinion if that’s… And he tells me that’s 13. It doesn’t have a direct injection, so…
SPEAKER 03 :
No, 2013 is not direct injection. It does have the cylinder deactivation, they call it. There’s a lot of guys out there that want to deactivate that. I would not recommend doing that, truthfully. And the reason I say that is because you really want those lifters to be activated and keep operational because if not, you could actually have more issues with them not being operational than actually operating like they are right now. Now, as far as the going to four, going back to eight, and actually feeling that and so on, you know, there’s things you could do. Put it in tow haul mode. Keep it in a little bit different ratio that way to where it’s not hunting as much. You’ve got the ability yourself to manage that in those windy conditions, Jerry, and I would do that before disabling it.
SPEAKER 06 :
I wouldn’t disable it until you had to do something like replace the cam or something, even then.
SPEAKER 03 :
Which, again, on those vehicles, the biggest reason they get a bad rap for lifter and cam issues is customers, literally, you know, drivers not changing oil as frequently in them as they should. If you do the right oil, change every 4,000 miles, Jerry, that engine will last a very long time. And there’s guys out there that will debate me on this, but they really can’t debate me because most of the vehicles that they’re fixing and putting cams in are ones that have not had good maintenance.
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah. And that’s what that shop owner, he said, just make sure you change oil every 4,000 miles. There you go.
SPEAKER 03 :
And he is on track. Now, where I would differ with him on is I would not disable the system because now you’re making them inoperable and I wouldn’t do that.
SPEAKER 12 :
So how does that work?
SPEAKER 03 :
Through oil pressure. It’s literally, it can change in a nanosecond. It’s oil pressure going to the lifter that enables it or disables it.
SPEAKER 12 :
And so it just holds the intake valve closed or what?
SPEAKER 03 :
No, if the lifter is collapsed, it doesn’t open, meaning that cylinder is deactivated. There’s nothing there to open the valve.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, nothing going in, nothing coming out.
SPEAKER 03 :
That’s right. It’s closed. That cylinder is closed at that point.
SPEAKER 12 :
then the exhaust valve must be open then.
SPEAKER 03 :
Well, the exhaust valve, well, keep in mind, if it’s not sucking anything in, there’s nothing for it to take out either. But typically on those, yes, it’s more the intake side than it is the exhaust side because if you don’t have anything coming in, you don’t. I mean, you don’t need to exhaust it, but I don’t know exactly how many lifters they’re enabling and disabling. I’ve never studied the system close enough to know exactly how they’re doing that, Jerry, because truthfully it doesn’t make a hill of beans bit of difference for what I do on a daily basis one way or the other. At the end of the day, change oil, let the system do what it needs to, and don’t worry about it.

And like I say, you can just, in those windy conditions, you could put that in tow haul mode and probably get it out of that hunting position that it’s doing at that point.

So this has got the six-speed transmission. Is it okay to push the… Sure. So if you’re already going down the road 60 miles an hour, is it okay to push the tow haul?
SPEAKER 03 :
Sure. If you’re feeling that hunt from four to eight and so on, yeah, put it in tow haul mode and it’ll stop doing that.

I just didn’t know if it was okay to put it in while you’re going 60 miles an hour.
SPEAKER 03 :
Sure, it won’t hurt a thing. You’ll be fine. It won’t bother anything.

Hey, John, thank you so much. You guys are awesome, man. I appreciate it. John, you helped me with my Silverado before. I got another problem now with my turn signal, John. When I turn them on, okay, if I turn the right one on, they’ll both go on. And then if I come to a stop somewhere and I want to turn right, if I hold my foot on the brake, you know, as you normally would, then they go off when I push my foot down. So I got to, like, This happened to me last night, so I had to let go on my brake just so people behind me know that I was going to be turning right, which can get dangerous. So I’ve got all new bulbs. I’ve got all new fuses. I did all that here this morning. Now, when I took the bulbs out of the top, the very top, which is, you know, your brake light and your hazard light up there, the very top ones, okay, they were quite burnt out, so I put brand-new ones in there. really good ones, and it’s still doing this crazy thing again. But the front flashers up front will flash just like crazy. They’re just fine, you know, up in the front. But on my back there, you can’t see them for nothing, John. You can’t see them. You can already see the light bulb with the lens off. And so, like I said, they just go wacky back and forth. And I’m just having a hard time trying to run this down, and I’ve been on his book here all night, and I did all the fuses, like I say, John, all 20 amps for the yellow ones.
SPEAKER 03 :
And I don’t remember, Bob, really quick, what’s the year and make? I don’t remember. I’m sorry.
SPEAKER 11 :
It’s a Chevy Silverado, John, 2000, 1500, 5.3.

Top of my head, and I don’t know without looking at it because I’m not in front of it, but top of my head, it sounds like you have a turn signal switch issue. Yeah.

Everything goes through the switch. Yep, everything. Brake lights, everything goes through there. So it could be in that part.
SPEAKER 11 :
Everything goes through that switch then, huh?
SPEAKER 06 :
Yep.
SPEAKER 11 :
Okay. That means I’ve got all the fuses taken care of. That should be okay then?
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah. And, again, there’s ways to check the turn signal switch, but what you’re describing and, again, just rule of thumb and what you’re telling me and knowing those vehicles like I do and being around them as long as I have, you’re describing a bad turn signal switch.
SPEAKER 11 :
I hear you talk about them now, huh?
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 11 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 03 :
And it’s not that hard to change, but I would change it is what I would do next.
SPEAKER 11 :
Okay. This way. Okay. All right. One other question, John, on that. It does say there’s a black fuse on the side, you know, to your left of the steering wheel. There’s that box in there. There’s an RAP number one, and that says exterior lamps, turn signals, hazard lights, all that. You think that fuse is okay then, John, that black one? I would guess so, and you can test that.
SPEAKER 03 :
You can put a test light across it and see if it’s functioning properly.
SPEAKER 11 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 03 :
Just check both sides of the fuse and make sure the test light lights up.
SPEAKER 11 :
Okay. Okay, then on the switch, a third single switch. That’s what I would say. Is that what you’re saying, then?
SPEAKER 03 :
That’s what I would say, Bob.

Yeah, I’ve got a window issue of a 2020 Subaru Forester. When it gets really cold… It’s got a system where if a child’s fingers were to get caught in the window, it would automatically come back down. Well, this is what it’s doing. When it’s really cool down, it’ll get stuck in the halfway up position or the halfway down position, whichever way you’re pushing the thing. And it takes a while for it to get caught back up. Am I looking at a relay issue, a fuse, or is that something that’s within the door?
SPEAKER 06 :
Normally more a motor issue to me. you know, the little brushes in the motor, you know, they kind of wear and they get a little hot and so they need to cool down a little bit to work again. What you can do to kind of test it when it does it again, just kind of tap the door panel just a little bit. You know, hit it just a little bit, just jolt it and see if that makes it work. That’s a good test to tell you if it’s the motor or not. It’s most likely just dragging a little bit. That’s what I would go with first. There’s fancier tests than that, but that one kind of works.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah, no, it’s just, you know, you know, we got to go on at the really cold days finally. And, you know, the last thing I want to do is be blasting down the highway, you know, with the window half way down, it won’t come back up.

Good. I got a 2022 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road, and it’s got 40,000 miles on it. And I’m having a parasitic draw on it, and it’s frustrating because it’ll go for a month or two. Oh, really? It’s garaged all the time, and I’ll start it, and it just did. And I put a new battery in it, same thing happened. So I’m sure it’s a parasitic draw. And I hate to take it to the dealer. Do you I mean, do you recommend anyone else? Would you think Ken would be good at that?

But the other thing I’ve read is that it won’t enter sleep mode maybe. I should be locking the doors even in the garage. Have you heard of that? I mean, just by using the key fob.

Yeah, and I was going to say, thank you. You’re kind of on the same direction, Roger, that I was just thinking. I think in this case, given that it takes that long for it to become an issue, I would try a couple of different things. One… Find yourself a nice little Faraday box. There’s plenty of them sold on Amazon and so on. I would lock it in the garage. I don’t typically do this with my cars, but I would lock it in the garage and then put the key fob, both of them, in a Faraday box so that there’s no signal going to the vehicle at all, meaning it’s not waking up for anything at all and see what changes, if anything. I see what you’re saying. In other words, keep those remotes either way, way away, but most houses aren’t big enough to get that far away. I mean, you have to have a huge house to get far enough away for that key fob to not have any. I mean, I can literally be in the 12-story up here in the top of KLZ, have my truck parked down in the parking lot and remote start it that far away. So, I mean, you’d have to have a… huge distance to not have that thing be picking up a signal meaning i’d put those things in a little faraday bag or box and and zip them in that and you know put those away and lock the car of course prior to this and then let it sit and see if that changes anything yeah that’s a good advice so nothing’s waking up at that point is where i’m going with this yeah so back to ken at toontech uh what part of denver is that in colfax and 225 He’s about, oh, I don’t know, not even a mile, quarter of a mile on the left-hand side of the road, the north side of the road, east of 225 on Colfax.

And for a lot of you listening, by the way, where you live in, this is just a side note, Roger, because there’s been a lot of things in the news of late of thieves stealing cars because they can pick up the signal from that key fob even when it’s inside your home. So for a lot of you where you might be in areas that you don’t really trust the neighborhood and trust the folk around, You may very well want to do the exact same thing I’m telling Roger, just for your everyday use, because that key fob is putting out a signal all the time. All the time.

And then, would that work at camping, too?
SPEAKER 03 :
Absolutely.

Absolutely, it would. Yes. And just in case, too, I would go buy a jump box.

Just a half. We recommend that on just a routine basis.

You can buy a pretty decent jump box for $100, $120 for camping.

I carry an extra marine battery with me just for the camper.

Oh, then you could use that if you had to. If you had an emergency kind of thing.

So you could do that, put that thing in there. It’s going to block the signal. And then you could determine from there whether we have something else going on in the forerunner or was something happening where that thing’s waking up periodically and that’s part of where the draw is coming from. This will zero it out at least.

They had some aftermarket stuff, but I bought it used, and my 2019 4Runner was damaged in the hailstorm. Oh, okay.

What aftermarket things did they do, Roger?
SPEAKER 07 :
They did some aftermarket stuff. I had my mechanic unhooked. He looked for this draw, and he couldn’t find it, but I had a… I actually had the person put a remote starter on. I thought maybe that was doing it. I had that disconnected. And I thought maybe that would solve the problem, but now it’s back to doing it.

Hey, quick question for you. I was talking to my brother-in-law. We were talking about this. diesel gas mixed with the engines and regular cars. But he was saying during Vietnam, they had multi-fuel trucks that ran off of diesel or gas and just flipped them over. Why don’t they do that anymore with vehicles?
SPEAKER 03 :
I would guess emissions would be the biggest reason. Trying to design an engine to run both of those versus one or the other and then get all of the emissions where not only EPA wants it, but the fuel economy is where it needs to be and so on and lowering hydrocarbons and NOx and so on. That would be my gut feeling, Robert. I mean, that is, I shouldn’t say it this way. It’s not my gut feeling. That is the answer. It’s really hard to control what’s coming out of the tailpipe doing what you’re talking about.
SPEAKER 08 :
All right, well, thanks a lot. I appreciate it. I was just kind of curious about that.
SPEAKER 03 :
No, it’s a great question. No, very good question.
SPEAKER 06 :
I can see where that would be advantaged in the military use, because you may not be able to have… Military use would be fabulous.
SPEAKER 03 :
And, of course, as you guys all know, the military doesn’t abide by or have to abide by the same regulations, even emissions and that, that even we do. In fact, the federal government and their vehicles and their trucks, you’ll see a lot of their diesels running around that have no… It’s ironic, but you’ll see a lot of like an F-350 that’ll not have any of the diesel particulate filters, none of the emission stuff on it, etc. It’ll be completely stripped down, and they’re using that inside the government. Military is the same way. So it’s funny where, you know, they don’t have to abide by the same things that they put on all of us, but yet we have to. In fact, if you tamper with any of that, and some people have actually gone to jail for doing that. It’s not so bad under this administration, but in… Times past, yes, there’s a lot of folks that they have made examples out of for tampering with, you know, emission systems and so on. So, yeah. And by the way, it’s something that we don’t advocate here whatsoever. Don’t do that. That’s not something that we would ever recommend you do. And especially as, you know, shops and so on. I mean, you just you can’t do. I mean, back in the day when I was younger, there was this company called Test Tube. where if you thought your catalytic converter was a problem, they made a test tube specific to your vehicle where you could literally take the cat out, put the test tube in, test to see whether the catalytic converter was plugged or not. Well, back then, people just bought test tubes to get rid of the cat, and off they went. Well, I don’t know. That company eventually went under or went away, or I don’t know whatever ended up happening to them. I don’t know whether they had a situation where the EPA came after them or not, but they went away because of that.
SPEAKER 06 :
I’m sure they did, yeah. That would set up a lot of red flags.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah. In today’s world, that is not allowed. I did see an article this last week, and I thought this was interesting, and we’ll see what happens here moving down the road. I don’t think anything will, but something should. In Colorado, of course, if you have a catalytic converter stolen or one fails or something happens to where you have to put a catalytic converter on, we are now under California standards for the catalytic converter required to put back on your vehicle, even though your vehicle didn’t come with said catalytic converter. And I read some articles. ratios the other day i can’t remember what publication i was reading that talked about colorado and california of course having the highest repair bills for vehicles because of that due in part because of what i’m talking about right now because if your catalytic converter fails the cost to replace that is and steve you know this better than i but it’s probably double of what it should be yes am i right yeah and oh yeah it adds a thousand dollars to things yeah yeah and and it’s been like that just before they started stealing lacobas when polis did that and
SPEAKER 06 :
Not overly political, but that was a dumb move. It’s a dumb move because it cost a lot of people a lot of money.
SPEAKER 03 :
It’s not doing anything different for the air, despite what anybody might think. This was a feel-good measure that was put out by the legislature. It’s not changing a single thing in regards to emissions. All it did was add a huge burden to the driving public here in Colorado. and frankly put a big burden even on shops because what’s happened is a lot of shops now where before you could just pick up the phone, get that Cadillac converter, it could be delivered same day, get the customer back on the road, and you’re done, done deal. Well, when we went this other direction, those Cadillac converters are not as prevalent. because think about it they’re making them for one state or now two states yeah i mean essentially one state california we just happen to be using california’s you know cats but at the end of the day they’re making cats for one state not 50 states and so there’s 49 other states that they’re making catalytic converters for which by the way they make a plethora of that’s what keeps the cost down some and they don’t have to have the same uh internals the same precious metals and so on like you do with the california cat that’s what driving the cost up on the california cat And all it really did at the end of the day was add cost to your repair bill. It’s not doing anything for the environment. In fact, I would go as far as to say, and this is something that people that write laws don’t think about. I would venture to guess. that by the time most customers are done monkeying around with trying to figure out where are they going to get this catalytic converter replaced the cheapest at. In other words, they’re driving here. They’re driving there. They’re talking to this person, talking to that person. This catalytic converter has to be shipped in from here. It has to be shipped in from there. I would venture to guess that by the time you go through everything I just mentioned and all the monkeying around that shops and owners do trying to figure out where to actually get the cat for the car, You’ve wasted far more fuel and emissions than if you would have just bought a standard catalytic converter to begin with. But this is why people that write laws – I’ll just say it straight up. I’m not to be political here as well, but this is a fact. They’re stupid people. Sorry. They are stupid people. They don’t have the foggiest idea. what their particular law or regulation is going to do to impact those that are out there driving around. These are people that think they’re highly educated, but they’re educated idiots. I’m sorry, I don’t know how else to say it. They have no clue what they’re doing and the ramifications of, and yet they’re writing laws for you and I. And I say this all the time on my daily show. I’ll talk about it here for a moment because it is a transportation issue. And all they did in this particular regulation and law with California cats was drive the cost of repairs up for you, the driver. Mm-hmm. Nothing else, trust me, nothing else has been accomplished. And I would go as far as to say, and it’ll be interesting, any of you out there listening to me right now, prove to me that I’m wrong, that we’re not adding pollution versus taking away with this goofy law you put in place. Because, again, I talk to people on a weekly basis, and I’ve gotten emails and text messages and so on from people whereby they’re spending a lot of resources, time, energy, effort to find a California cat so their vehicle can still be operational on the roads in Colorado. And at the end of the day, you have now negated any types of savings that potentially, and I say potentially with air quotes around it, potentially that were there by putting a California cat on that car.
SPEAKER 06 :
And, you know, like my neighbor, actually, he sold his car because it was one of those that had four cats. Oh, geez. So, you know, that was four times as much. So, you know, his option was to sell it.
SPEAKER 03 :
At the end of the day, he’s selling the car, scrapping it. You’re now adding more back into the environment and so on. So you just negated any type of savings you thought you were going to have.
SPEAKER 06 :
So a lot of people scrapped their cars.
