From traditional wood-style big bore calibers to modern synthetic-stocked lightweight rifles, discover how LT Arms sets themselves apart in the competitive field of custom gun making.
SPEAKER 02 :
Welcome to Sportsman of Colorado, Colorado’s premier outdoor radio show heard every Saturday afternoon on KLZ 560 with insights on hunting, fishing, archery, guns, and ammo from Colorado’s top outfitters featuring the industry’s leading experts on how to enhance your experience in the great outdoors. Now, here’s your host, Scott Watley.
SPEAKER 08 :
Welcome to Sportsman Colorado. Thank you so much for being with us today. Once again, we are kicking off the month with our friends LT Arms, 8130 Schaefer Parkway in Littleton. Kyle, the owner, is back with us. All the guys, Evan and Brandon, said hey. Let’s let the owner finally back on him. Kyle, good to see you, bud. Good seeing you, too. Thanks for having me. Your guys have been representing you well, Brandon and Evan. They’ve been taking care of you. And, Brandon, good to see you again. Good to see you, too, Scott. Well, busy time. Hey, hunting season is here and full swing. And, Kyle, you just got back from a hunt.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yep, yep, I did. It was definitely fun. Went elk hunting, got a lot of elk. Two weeks before that, I was deer hunting. So it’s nice knowing that when you come to a shop that the owner actually, you know, preaches what he teaches.
SPEAKER 08 :
Absolutely, absolutely. And you were in Wyoming? Yep, correct. Okay. Southern part of Wyoming. Right, right. Wow. And what were you shooting?
SPEAKER 15 :
Firearm. Yeah, so it was a custom firearm, actually, a Shikari rifle that we make here in the shop. We call it our Pathfinder. It’s our lightweight hunting rifle. It’s a great rifle, chambered in the 6.8 Western. got had no problem taking game the elk i took was about 470 yards and the deer was closer to you know a little farther out than that so okay wow you know you talk about something that’s a competitive field right now it’s custom rifles yeah
SPEAKER 08 :
So when you’re thinking about getting into that and doing, I mean, man, that takes a lot, you know, just to get in there and figure out, you know, how can we be different? What can we build that’s going to be, you know, something exceptional? Kind of walk us through your process of then what was important to you in building a gun.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, so, I mean, as far as our custom rifles, the entire industry is going away from the African Safari game rifles, and so we kind of geared our firearms towards that, your large bore calibers and everything. We wanted to stick with the traditional wood-style firearms because, again, the industry is going away from that, so… You know, it’s nice to have a classic wood look in a firearm, but we also appeal to those people that want to beat their gun up and go hunting and drag it through the mud. We also have those options as well with our synthetic stocks and everything to appease to that. And for your backcountry lightweight hunting rifle, we also have that need met as well.
SPEAKER 08 :
Right.
SPEAKER 15 :
Versus… Just your crazy, you know, everything carbon fiber, $10,000 rifle. We didn’t want to focus on that because that’s oversaturated.
SPEAKER 08 :
Right. So, Gargal, just come in, sit down with you, and just kind of map it out of what they want, right? Yeah.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, exactly. So we start out with our basic actions, 700 platform action, short throw action, and then everything is based off of that. We get your barrel contour, your twist rate that you want, the caliber that you want. And then as far as the trigger and the stock, depending on what people prefer, we have a trigger that we really like to use in our custom builds. Just because it’s a nice crisp trigger, single stage, makes it… As far as a hunting aspect, when you pull that trigger, you know it’s going to go off. There’s no creep. There’s no wall that you have to worry about or anything like that. And so that’s the biggest thing that I wanted to emphasize in our hunting rifles is that crisp trigger. That way you know it’s going to go off.
SPEAKER 08 :
Sure. And you know what? Man, until I started doing this show, I had never bought any gun except off the wall, so to speak, you know, off the rack. And you don’t really know. what you don’t know until you pull a trigger or you know you see what a barrel different barrel can do different things like that brandon so oh absolutely i mean it’s a different world when you get into these custom yeah definitely and i mean kyle talking about triggers sometimes the trigger pull alone is enough to sell the gun you know you’ll hand it to a guy and
SPEAKER 17 :
they’ll cycle the action and pull the trigger and they’re like oh my god like i thought my gun was nice but this is like completely no i mean i pulled that one yesterday when i was over here man i was like oh man they have the elr build yeah that that trigger is i mean it’s it’s it’s light it’s below a pound for sure so what calibers are you gonna are you kind of And in your initial bills, and then I guess you can do anything, but… Right now on the wall, we have the 6.8 Western Kyle was talking about. We do, in the larger Safari guns, we have a 375 H&H 416 Rigby. We have an ELR build that is in…
SPEAKER 15 :
It’s a 3378. It’s a nice flat shooting round to reach out to a mile or two with it. But then, I mean, just your standard off-the-wall custom build. We’ll have your 300s. We’ll have your 7s, your 270s, 6.8 Westerns, kind of your standard hunting cartridges. We can easily build those out and everything like that. Those would be the standard ones. And then if someone wants a Wildcat round, we’re more than happy to build that as well. Okay.
SPEAKER 08 :
So what are you going to look at in range? I mean, you know, since we’re in rifle season here, I mean, somebody’s wanting a nice 270 or something. What could be a range, again, depending on different things you may do to it?
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, I mean, again, this is 100% custom rifle. So, I mean, we’re starting at around $2,500, $2,600. Okay. And then… whatever their imagination is after that. But yeah, so $2,500 is an easy entry into the custom firearm. If we’re going, you know, your moderate bells and whistles on it, we’re not going crazy. You know, get closer to $3,234. But yes, if someone wants, I mean, the most craziest one we’ve built so far has been $6,000. But that was every… Super high-end crime fiber. Everything you could think of was high-end on it.
SPEAKER 17 :
Fluted barrel and the whole nine yards.
SPEAKER 08 :
But when you look in the world of custom rifles, that’s really a good deal, right? Yeah.
SPEAKER 17 :
I mean… Yeah. Compared to other companies that are doing the same thing as far as that rifle he’s talking about, I mean, you can get up way past $10,000 really easy with a similar gun. Right. And then are you guys…
SPEAKER 08 :
And being you guys handle all reloads and, you know, loading up great rounds, which you did for me with my Seekins Precision. Is that something you’re encouraging them to? Hey, let us build you some loads here.
SPEAKER 15 :
Oh, yeah, definitely. Actually, one of the customers up in Sheridan, Wyoming, that we’re building built a gun for, he’s actually going to have us do custom loads for that gun so that. He can take it out of the box, and he can stack bullets on top of each other.
SPEAKER 08 :
Wow. And it does work that way. Oh, yeah. I mean, I love what y’all have done with my Seekins. It’s great. It’s awesome. If you’re just joining us, LT Arms is with us, 8130 Schaefer Parkway. And, hey, if it’s been a while since you’ve been over, maybe you haven’t even been to the new location here, and that is the new address, which is really just across the street. So if you were at the other previous location here, And months or years past, hey, come on by and see this new showroom. It is absolutely awesome. And I really couldn’t believe when you told me you guys were moving. And then in just a few weeks, man, everything was over here. I couldn’t believe it. I mean, it was crazy. But, man, it turned out beautiful, didn’t it?
SPEAKER 15 :
Oh, yeah, it definitely did. And, again, we wanted to have a nice, warm environment for people to come in. We do consultation here for our custom builds, custom loads, all that stuff. We just wanted a nice place for people to come and hang out.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, well, well accomplished, well accomplished. And Shikari, right, is the name of the rifle? Correct. All right. So, hey, come in, talk to the crew about it, and they can show you some great, great rifles. And I’m telling you, they are nothing like custom. Oh, yeah. And at a fair price.
SPEAKER 15 :
I mean, there’s some factory rifles that are at the same price that we’re selling our custom rifles at. So it’s hard to beat.
SPEAKER 08 :
That works for sure. Gunsmithing. Now, we’re already into first rifle, but I’m telling you. don’t wait if you’re in the third or fourth rifle season to the day or two before the season kicks off. Bring it over here and get done what you need to get done, right?
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, exactly. I mean, we try to work miracles for people and all that, but if you show up at 6 o’clock in your hunts the next morning, there’s only so much we can do to fix your rifle on the spot. But if the last time you saw your rifle was when you put it away last season, it might be time to pull it out and look at it.
SPEAKER 08 :
and go shoot it yeah before yeah yeah definitely and i was telling the guy yesterday man i can’t tell you the stories i’ve heard especially if you’re flying somewhere but even i’ll tell you i’ve learned man you should shoot when you get to your destination and just make sure everything’s right oh yeah you know can get banged around or whatever you know you don’t know what it might not be in the same condition that you left in especially if they toss them around on the airplane so Walk us through. I mean, your gunsmithing department is huge here, and people can see that. I mean, you’ve got glass, you know, where you can see inside to see what all they do, but kind of walk us through some of the services.
SPEAKER 15 :
yeah some of the i mean some of the services we offer is your standard cleaning oil all that uh and then we go all the way up to we’re a full machine shop i mean we’re threading barrels cutting crowns all that we’re cutting optic cuts for slides and then we can make it look however you want i mean we offer laser engrave anything And then we also do Cerakote work. So we can make your gun look just like the gun you’re using in Fortnite or whatnot. Or we could, you know, build you the rifle that you saw on TV.
SPEAKER 08 :
All right. Cerakoting is really cool. That’s come a long way in the past few years, hasn’t it, Brandon?
SPEAKER 17 :
Oh, yeah, absolutely. You can do that. They do basic colors, too. We have guys back there doing crazy camouflage patterns, distressed looks. We can go for the full-on, you know, battle-worn look on ARs and things like that. And another nice thing they do back there is we do a lot of restoration on older guns. And so if you’re looking to get something case-hardened or re-blued, you know, if you pull out your grandpa’s gun that you want to make look like it was brand new from the 1930s, again, we can totally do that. We do a lot of cool restoration jobs. A lot of custom things that they haven’t done in a long time, but we still do here. Right.
SPEAKER 08 :
You know, we talked about this, I think, last show we did, but the Weatherby that you had brought in was super, super special. Yeah.
SPEAKER 17 :
Yeah, it was a gun that belonged to—it was made by Roy Weatherby for Herb Klein, and Herb Klein was one of the original investors in Weatherby. He was basically— financial power behind it when it first started he’s a guy with family oil money and was was writing the checks for weatherby for for a long time and he uh the the gun was it was a it was an old it was it was a weatherby mark 5 that had a crazy engraving work on it and it was gold plated and had a ballistics chart on the stock that was inlaid in brass. I mean, it was beautiful. So, yeah, we had a customer call that said, you know, I have this really cool old Weatherby that you guys have never seen before, and I need to make sure it works before I go hunting. And he asked me, you know, have you ever heard of Herb Klein? And I was like, yeah, I’ve heard of Herb Klein before. He’s like, all right, I’ll be down there in 20 minutes. And, yeah, pulls it out of the case, and it was – Yeah. Oh, God. Yeah.
SPEAKER 08 :
And I tell you, looking through your case, this man caught a great selection of handguns and, you know, shotguns. I mean, everything. You’ve got that one room there where, I mean, if you can’t find it in that room. There’s a little bit of everything. Yeah. I mean, there’s everything in there.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, definitely. And I mean, we try to we don’t want to be geared in one area. We try to have a nice variety for everyone. And that’s kind of the whole premise is to have it to where if if we don’t have it, then we’ll get it for you. But chances are, we probably have something that you’re wanting.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, absolutely. Once again, if you’re just joining us, LT Arms, 8130 Schaefer Parkway. What are your hours?
SPEAKER 15 :
Monday through Friday, 10 to 7, and then Saturday is 10 to 4. 10 to 4.
SPEAKER 08 :
All right. Great. Now, again, hunting season, you just hunted in some weather that wasn’t… Very cool. So let’s talk about taxidermy here and taking care of meat and stuff. And we got Keith, formerly, I guess, Hunter T’s taxidermy. He’s now under your umbrella of LT Arms, I guess. Yeah. But Keith does a great, great job. But I was talking with him the other day when I was over here, and he said, man, please mention this on the show because I’m a taxidermist, not a magician.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, and that’s definitely one of the biggest things he complains about is – It is sad to see some of the things that people bring in. It’s just covered in maggots and everything. And all that can be prevented because once the hair starts falling off, we can’t re-sew hair in. There’s tricks and stuff that we do to get the hair back to where how it should look and everything. but it doesn’t look as good as the original. So as far as proper care and handling a game after you get it, is you want to gut it out as quickly as possible, because that stuff, it starts to bloat and everything. It can ruin the meat very quickly. And so that’s the biggest thing you want to worry about, is getting the guts out as quickly as possible. After that, you want to make sure that you cool it down as easily and quickly as possible. And so that’s why a lot of people quarter it out is you can cool it down quicker by getting it split apart. And being able to do that is what will save your meat and give you the longest time to process it. If it’s warm, I mean, if you’re early in first rifle season or archery season here in Colorado, it’s still kind of warm. And so that’s something that you need to be cognitive about in everything is keeping your meat cool. That way you don’t ruin that and get an appointment in with a processor if you’re not going to do it yourself. uh but as far as the hide and everything you want to get the hide off uh you know once you have it all skinned out and everything if you want to do a shoulder mount uh get that cape you know spread out let it cool down uh kind of you know make sure everything is taken care of properly there uh because if you just skin it and then roll it up, that’s where you’re going to get the maggots, the mold and everything. And then if you drive around trying to show off your kill to everyone, it’s just going to sit there baking in the bed of your truck. And so that’s the hardest thing when people bring in a trophy is –
SPEAKER 08 :
they just destroyed their trophy that they were showing off to all their buddies because they didn’t keep it cool and if you’re not sure and hey there’s an art to it and a skill as far as but once you just learn how to do a proper caping out you know it’s pretty easy but if you don’t know i mean There’s nothing worse than just bringing something all chopped up, too. I mean, so come by and see Keith. He’ll show you. He’s got enough animals and stuff in there. He can kind of show you what lines to cut, you know, coming back, you know, cutting way back halfway through the animal. Because I’ve never heard a taxidermist go, man, you didn’t have to bring me that much cape. You know, I mean, that’s usually not something he’s ever said. You know, he told me so. But so if you need help with that, hey. Now’s the time to do it. If you’re in these second, third, fourth seasons, man, come over here and see Keith and he can get you fixed up. Yeah.
SPEAKER 17 :
Some really great examples of the work he does over there, too. So, yeah, give you some confidence in where you’re leaving it. It is really good.
SPEAKER 08 :
All right. Let’s talk about your consignment program a little bit and how that works. And, you know, you do consignment. Also, we call them kind of estate buys, and I don’t want anybody to think, hey, does that mean I’ve got to have 100 guns? No. I mean, it can be one gun, five guns, ten guns, whatever. But if you’ve got some guns that maybe you’re not using anymore and you want to turn those into cash, walk us through your program.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, definitely. As far as that, I mean, we have so many people that come in and say, hey, I just inherited this from my grandpa or my husband just passed away and I don’t know what to do with this. We sit down with them. We walk them through the process, explain to them, you know, this is kind of the general area of what this firearm is selling for on the market right now. and this is what we think we could get for you. We’re happy to do that for some people. We also have people that come in and they did the homework themselves, and they say, hey, this is what I want to get for it. We’re more than happy to post things and all that. We have a bunch of different online auction sites and everything that we post things on and all that. We try to help people understand what they have. I mean, we’ve had several people come in with guns that are just,
SPEAKER 08 :
off the wall immaculate and we can get them way more than they ever thought they could have gotten yeah so and i don’t know sell them by yourself first of all you really can’t do that legally okay so you should and do you want people come to your house looking at guns and different things like that you don’t know so to me it’s a lot safer way the legal way and in this environment you’re probably going to get more for it than you would yeah exactly and that’s i
SPEAKER 15 :
If people want to try and go sell it themselves, more power to them, all that. But like you said, it’s a lot safer having an environment where people can come to. It’s not your home and stuff like that. You’re not giving out your address to people. But also… But having the environment of there’s other guns around, you kind of see what other guns are going for in that price range and stuff like that. It helps sell a little bit easier.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, absolutely. Well, hey, we got to mention one cool thing you guys do now, Brandon. Cowboy hands. Yeah. We do. You guys made me one, man. It’s awesome, man. Worked the other night. And really, I promise, it’s the truth. Everybody’s like, man, that’s a good-looking hat. I’m like, well, LT arms. And they go. A gun store? Yeah, go see them. Tell them I sent you.
SPEAKER 17 :
But tell us about it. Yeah, three of us went down. We went to hat steaming college. We went to Hat Masters, and so we learned how to steam hats and all got certified. And so we have a selection of pre-shaped hats that we offer, and we also can get you any level of beaver you’d like. Some guys, you know. are good with the 7X, and we get some guys that come in there, you know, they have no problem spending, you know, two, three grand on a 100X. I got a buddy like that, yeah. They’re all about it. Wow. Cowboy hats and cowboy boots, the guys will spend as much as their truck sometimes on those things. Yeah, so we can do, you know, any shape you want to. We have a selection of colors, everything like that. We do it all in-house, and we’re going to start doing some pop-ups around town at, you know, different events, steaming hats. So if anybody wants us to come down and, you know, set up shop and steam hats at their event, we’d be glad to come down.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, they’ve got a great selection here. They’ve got straw hats, felt hats.
SPEAKER 17 :
I mean, all kinds of different choices, right? Plain felt all the way up to, you know, 100X pure beaver. Wow.
SPEAKER 15 :
And one of the fun things is we make fluorescent orange hats so that you can wear your custom hat hunting and everything. That’s one of the fun ones that we did and all that. And so definitely with third, fourth rifle season coming up, come get your custom hat.
SPEAKER 08 :
Man, no doubt, no doubt. Well, man, thanks for having us out. And folks, get by and see them. It’s LT Arms, 8130 Schaefer Parkway in Littleton. It’s kind of an, I guess, industrial district would be the right kind of deal. But just look for the elk on the window. I’ve had a couple of people that had a hard time. I said, just look for the elk on the window. And that’s the door. And once again. Hey, taxidermy needs, they can help you. Gunsmithing needs, they can help you. If you’ve got some guns you want to turn, they can help you. And, of course, hey, they’ve got a great, great selection. So come over here and see them. And when you come in, be sure and let them know you heard them here on Sportsman of Colorado. And we’d appreciate that. So, Kyle, thank you very much. Thank you very much. Brandon, thank you, too. Thank you, Scott. You’re listening to Sportsman of Colorado. We’ve got to hit a quick break, and we’ll be back with more right after this.
SPEAKER 04 :
Here’s why you need personal injury attorney Kevin Flesch on your side. He understands the way the jury thinks. In the context of a personal injury case, you’ve been hurt by someone else’s negligence. The idea is that you’re going to try to recover so that you can get back to where you were just prior to that incident occurring. What that really means from a jurist’s perspective is that you’re going to be asking them to award you money. So when we talk about fairness, we’re talking about six people that you don’t know. Those six people view the evidence and make a unanimous decision that will decide what the fair value is. When you’re the one who’s hurt, you have a good idea of what you think it’s worth. The question is, can you persuade those other individuals whom you don’t know and were witnesses to believe that’s what the case is worth? Kevin Flesch understands the way the jury thinks. SPEAKER 08 :
Welcome back to Sportsman of Colorado. Thank you so much for being with us today. Shoot indoors, Buckley. Hey, a great range, 1310 South Abilene Street, and the owner joins us today, our good buddy, Tim Christopherson. Christopherson, how are you?
SPEAKER 13 :
Christopherson, yes. Doing well, Scott. How about yourself?
SPEAKER 08 :
Doing good, man. Buddy, years gone by, hasn’t it? It’s… It’s been a quick summer for sure. You say the summer’s been good though.
SPEAKER 13 :
Yeah. Summer’s been good. Been busy. Carton kids are all around the state and even to Canada. We had to travel for the cross tournament this year. So, uh, up in Calgary for a weekend, which was fun, but, uh, yeah, so it’s been a busy summer. Uh, On and off work. I’ve been busy at the range, and really, things have been going well.
SPEAKER 08 :
Well, good, good. You know, I know I’ve never been through a time like this, so much attack on our guns and firearms and different things. A lot of changes have come up over last year and this year. One thing is new training-type mandates. Kind of tell us a little bit about that for those that don’t know, and then about some of your classes.
SPEAKER 13 :
Yeah, for sure. Anybody that is a current CCW holder or looking at obtaining their permit to conceal or carry a handgun is required new training as of July 1st of this year. So it’s a two-hour refresher course for existing permit holders and then an eight-hour mandatory course with shooting in both classes in order to obtain your new permit. So that started, like I said, July 1st. And we’ve seen a big demand for that. A lot of people are exercising that right to carry. So it’s good to see people going through the steps and obtaining those permits. Right.
SPEAKER 08 :
How many people can you put in a class each time?
SPEAKER 13 :
We just redesigned our classroom. We can actually fit close to 30 people in our classroom now.
SPEAKER 08 :
So it is somewhat limited. So people that want to get in… Better call. Oh, for sure.
SPEAKER 13 :
Scarcity. We like to see our classes between 10 and 12 people. We do run some special events where we’re, you know, putting more people in the classroom, but you won’t see an overcrowded class more than 10 or 12 people typically.
SPEAKER 08 :
And I tell people all the time when they say shooting, I go, look, the way I believe it is, they’re not looking for you to be a marksman in that. They’re looking for you to be safe with a firearm, correct?
SPEAKER 13 :
Yeah. And the shooting requirement, while it is a requirement, they’re, We’re looking for safety more than we are marksmanship. There is an accuracy requirement. I think we’re yet to have anybody fail that portion, so don’t be intimidated.
SPEAKER 08 :
You must stay on paper.
SPEAKER 13 :
Don’t be intimidated by the shooting portion, and we’ll give one-on-one instruction as needed to assure proficiency.
SPEAKER 08 :
Right. And what are those classes running right now, money-wise?
SPEAKER 13 :
So we did have to double the length of our class. So that essentially doubled the cost of the class as well. The refresher course is $125. That’s two hours. You’re going to spend time in the classroom and time on the range. And then the CCW new permit class would be $250. That’s basically seven hours, uh, classroom instruction. And then, uh, you go on the range for the last hour. So, uh, yep. We’re making sure we’re running through the paces.
SPEAKER 08 :
So what are you seeing in, in, um, people coming in more guys, more women than normal? I mean, what do you, who are you seeing coming in for the classes?
SPEAKER 13 :
You know, we’ve got a really good mix of men, women, children. Um, there, I wouldn’t, you know, it’s a predominantly male sport. I will say that, but, uh, You know, women’s participation in the shooting sports has grown exponentially over the last several years. And whether it’s somebody trying to protect themselves or just find a new hobby or a new sport to enjoy, we really get all walks of life.
SPEAKER 08 :
Right. Again, Tim is with us at Shoot Indoors Buckley. It’s 1310 South Abilene. There are several other locations around the area. As well, let’s see, we’ve got off 6th and I-25.
SPEAKER 13 :
Yep, 6th Avenue and I-25 is our Shoot Indoors Denver location. We have another one just off of 39th and Monaco. That’s what we call our Shoot Indoors Central Park. And then our first location in the metro area, been around for just over 12 years now, almost 13, is up in Broomfield off of Highway 36 and 120th. So easy to get to anywhere you are in the metro area. Yeah. And your hours at your store are? We are open 10 a.m. until 10 p.m., Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Fridays. And then long weekend hours, 8 a.m. till 8 p.m. So we try to accommodate as many schedules as we can. So whether it’s work or play, we can hopefully find some time to get in. And you talk about being convenient for people because, you know, other places may close 5 or 6 o’clock.
SPEAKER 08 :
Here’s a little 10 o’clock or 8 o’clock. And, I mean, that’s awesome.
SPEAKER 13 :
Yeah, and we’re just meeting the demand because there’s many days where our busiest hours of the day are from 8 to 10 o’clock because there’s, Nothing else to do, especially if you’re in the shooting sports. Every place else is closed down. So we’ve really taken a stride to keep it convenient with our hours.
SPEAKER 08 :
Well, here’s the thing I hear, too. I mean, the whole time you’ve been with us is, man, I don’t need a coffee bar. I don’t need a restaurant. I need a place I can just get in and shoot. You know what I mean? Yeah. And be cost effective. And you’re certainly that.
SPEAKER 13 :
Yeah, we try to keep our walk-in rates competitive. We definitely have our membership rates probably the most competitive in the industry in this area. So for $40 a month, you can get unlimited access to our range and not pay any per-visit fees. So it’s very cost-effective if you’re shooting more than once a month.
SPEAKER 08 :
You know, here’s something to – and I highly recommend you follow them on their social media. And again, it’s Shoot Indoors Buckley. But you will see things from – Bachelor parties, bachelorette parties, you’ll see work functions group. What I’m saying is people can get in touch with you. You can kind of design something for any type group or individuals that want to come in, can’t you?
SPEAKER 13 :
Yeah, absolutely. We’ve worked with groups that bring catering in. We’ve got, you know, our classroom space is great for, you know, gathering. If there’s not a class going, we can arrange the classroom for you. And, you know, we get groups constantly coming in just to find a fun way to spend an afternoon or a team-building event. Wow, cool.
SPEAKER 08 :
Hey, you were telling me before we came on air you had a pretty special guest recently that’s going to be coming back in November.
SPEAKER 13 :
Yes, just last week we had Sam Yu, and for those of you who don’t know who he is, he is an international competitor in shooting sports. He’s done a lot of training of celebrities for certain movie roles and that type of stuff, and he is the best marksman, best firearms handler I’ve ever been in close contact with. He’s amazing. He’s won world championships in IPSC. He is… A lot of fun to watch. And he did a training course, a three-day course here last week, and he’s coming back in November to do some more training. And so watch our website, watch our calendar, and see when we have him posted.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, we’ll definitely get you back on that for sure.
SPEAKER 13 :
It’ll be training unlike anybody’s ever seen before.
SPEAKER 08 :
If you’re familiar with the John Wick movies, he’s the one that trained Keanu Reeves, correct?
SPEAKER 13 :
Yep, that is correct. So he walks the walk and talks the talk for sure. Wow, that’s awesome.
SPEAKER 08 :
Now, gun rentals. Let’s talk about that a little bit and how all that works.
SPEAKER 13 :
You know, our gun rentals and our fleet is constantly growing. We’re adding one to two, maybe three guns a month. So we’re up well over 60 now available for rent. And you can come in without anything and we can help you get on the range. Single firearm rental is $20. If you want to try multiple firearms, you’re going to pay $35. Ammo is additional purchase for that. But it’s a great way to try something before you buy it or just come out for a fun afternoon.
SPEAKER 08 :
And you work with our friend Ryan, Big Horn Firearms, and you all do quite a few events together too.
SPEAKER 13 :
Yeah, we’ve done several events in the past. He always does his anniversary party that we set up a booth at, and we work closely with him and his crew over there obtaining firearms, and we send people his way all the time. So it’s fun to have that business relationship with a reputable gun store. Right.
SPEAKER 08 :
Those machine gun shoots, those are pretty crazy, aren’t they?
SPEAKER 13 :
Yeah, we’ve pared back on those slightly. We’re doing them probably quarterly now as opposed to monthly, but still a great way to get out and shoot something that you may likely never have another chance to do. Machine gun shoots are always a good time. All right.
SPEAKER 08 :
If people want to get, I’ve talked to a few people and I’ve told them just to call you, but I’ve talked to a few people that says, man, I just don’t want to be in a class with training. I just, I want to, I’d like to do one-on-one stuff. Is anybody on your staff available to be hired for like a one-on-one for a few weeks for training?
SPEAKER 13 :
Yeah, absolutely. We’ve got, you know, with this new Colorado requirements, we’ve got several verified instructors working for us. Not that they need to be a verified instructor to do a one-on-one lesson, but those go for $125. It’s 90 minutes. Usually the instructor will gauge your ability level up to 30 minutes in the classroom, and then the rest of the time is spent on the range, going over the fundamentals or whatever skills you’re wanting to work on.
SPEAKER 08 :
Again, Tim Christopherson is with us at Shoot Indoors Buckley, 1310 South Abilene Street. And, hey, pretty much they’re always open that you’re awake, all right? So that’s the easiest way to put it. But, again, this is a great place, and it is exactly what I said a few minutes ago. Hey, if you’re there just to get in, be able to shoot your gun. In a good environment, clean environment, great staff, shoot a lot of different guns maybe. And let’s mention this real quick. You know, before you go to Ryan and buy a gun, try some. Shoot. See what fits you, right? Yeah. That’s the best place to do it is your place. Yep.
SPEAKER 13 :
And like I said, our rental fleet is constantly evolving, so we’re bringing on the new popular guns that are coming out. So we always try to keep that fresh. So what you’re trying to rent and shoot is what you’re able to go out and buy right away. And you were telling me you just celebrated five years. We did. Five-year anniversary on July 7th. So that was exciting. Opened this business, arguably the worst time in history. Right in the peak of COVID. So we faced many challenges there. But, you know, we adapted and overcame. And now we just celebrated five years. So that’s quite an accomplishment.
SPEAKER 08 :
Quite an accomplishment. Absolutely. Now, are there other special deals or days or discounts? I think you do some things for veterans.
SPEAKER 13 :
Yeah. So military, police, current form military, law enforcement, firefighters, EMTs. Always get a discount when you come in. Just make sure you mention it at the counter. They’ll likely ask you as well. Um, we do have our ladies day, uh, probably our most popular weekday. Uh, that’s, uh, women shoot for $10, uh, get a free gun rental and a free target. So, uh, best value in town, in my opinion.
SPEAKER 08 :
Absolutely. Um, anything coming up anytime soon you want to mention or a little too early to mention?
SPEAKER 13 :
Um, we don’t have a lot, uh, other than, like I said, Sam is coming back in, uh, November. He’ll be running some classes before hours, after hours. So I might have to adjust your schedule a little bit to take advantage of that. But he likes to be on an empty range. So we’ll be operating those classes outside of business hours. Um, other than, you know, summer’s almost over and our winter season’s picking up, expect to be a little bit busier, but, uh, still with 12 lanes, uh, we can easily accommodate, uh, you know, 200 shooters a day. So don’t, don’t let a line scare you away. Yeah, really. Is there anything you can’t shoot there? Um, we can’t shoot birdshot, so shotguns with slugs or buckshot. And then we don’t shoot, uh, .50 caliber BMG.
SPEAKER 08 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 13 :
Other than that, all rifle calibers, all pistol calibers, and shotguns with slugs or buckshot. And for those black powder people out there, we can accommodate black powder as well. Our ventilation system is second to none, so you won’t be filling the range with smoke.
SPEAKER 08 :
I’ll tell you, that’s here for a note. I actually got a muzzleloader tag this year, so I’m planning on stopping by. Yeah. That’ll be great. Talk about your staff a minute. And all we hear about how friendly and knowledgeable your staff is. And that means a lot to a business, you know, when they’re welcomed. And I think that’s one thing when people come over and over again, you kind of build a great community there, you know?
SPEAKER 13 :
Oh, absolutely. My staff speaks for themselves. And you can check our reviews online. You’ll see we’re at 4.9 stars, which is the highest rated range in the nation. And, you know, our staff goes above and beyond and really just creates that welcoming atmosphere. So whether you’re a novice or a beginner or you’ve been shooting for, you know, decades, our staff can probably help you out one way or another. Yeah, for sure.
SPEAKER 08 :
Once again, it is Shoot Indoors Buckley, 1310 South Abilene. You can check out the other locations in the area as well. And if you’ll listen, hey, every once in a while we’ll throw out some deals where you can get a chance to win a gift card there. And a great, great store. Again, over 60 guns you can try and shoot. And I want to make sure I’m right on this. $20 if you rent one gun. $35 you can shoot anything. Yep. And you buy your own ammo. And you buy the ammunition, correct.
SPEAKER 13 :
Yeah, the person buys their own ammo. All right.
SPEAKER 08 :
Anything we forgot?
SPEAKER 13 :
I don’t think so, Scott.
SPEAKER 08 :
Good. All right, man. Always good to see you. Congrats on five years. Man, I’m telling you, not only going through COVID, but just to make it five years is a big deal. Yeah. I mean, it really is.
SPEAKER 13 :
From the inside looking out, it felt like I blinked and we were there. But it was a quick five years. But lots of trials, tribulations, and here we are.
SPEAKER 08 :
Sure. Well, you’ve done a good job, bud. Congratulations. Appreciate it. You’re listening to Sportsman Colorado. We’ve got to take a quick break, and we’ll be back with more right after this.
SPEAKER 14 :

SPEAKER 07 :
You know, I’d recommend Len Lyle Chevrolet to anyone. And with their low overhead, that means lower prices.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, we really do have something in common.
SPEAKER 07 :
Len Lyle Chevrolet, go east and pay the least. Chevy, find new roads.
SPEAKER 08 :
Here’s your Water Talk Minute with Paul the Waterman, brought to you by Water Pros.
SPEAKER 01 :
Folks, everybody needs to go to the EPA website and check out the contaminated candidate list. There’s unregulated contaminants that have been in our drinking water forever. And what that means is that municipalities don’t have to test for them. So we have 1,4-dioxin. It’s an unregulated contaminant that’s been in the water supply since the early 1900s. We have synthetic estrogen that’s in our water supply. We have pesticides, herbicides in our water supply. So this is something that educate yourself. This is why we need a point-of-use reverse osmosis system for our drinking water, because of all the contaminants that the EPA is not allowing our municipalities to tell us about.

SPEAKER 08 :
of colorado again thank you so much for being with us our next guest you will hear during the week on haystack health radio we’d also like to get him in once a month or so here on sportsman of colorado because you know what it’s hard to enjoy enjoy the outdoors if you can’t see properly all right alan stack is with us stack optical his office is located at 2233 south monaco parkway their number 303-321-1578 alan stack good to see you my friend thank you scott How’s the summer and now getting into fall going to be? It’s wonderful.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah. And we just didn’t have that hot summer like we usually do.
SPEAKER 08 :
No. I mean, there was a few warm days.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah. But I just remember when we were pushing 100 for weeks. I know. You know, so I think it’s been a pretty nice summer. I’m from Texas, as you know. And let me tell you, it ain’t hot.
SPEAKER 08 :
Because what my friends will tell me, I’ll go. Oh, we get down in the 70s or something. They’re like, man, if it’s 108 here at midnight, it’s 101. You know, I mean, it just doesn’t cool off. I do not regret moving to Colorado, for sure. Hey, I want to talk about the outdoors, of course, and glasses and so many things. We’re getting into the hunting seasons here, big game and all that about to go on for us. And then we’re going to be hitting the slopes with skiing. Golf is still pretty much year-round here in Colorado. So a lot to talk about when it comes to seeing properly for all these different outdoor activities.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yep. The biggest thing is probably the tinting for your sunglasses when you’re hunting. It’s really important. I’d stay away from any kind of gray lenses when you’re hunting. You’ve got to be able to see in those shadows. The different type of… You know, glassing a slope and that type of thing. You know, you’ll miss them if they’re in the shadows.
SPEAKER 11 :
Sure.
SPEAKER 03 :
If you’re wearing gray lenses. So, and then, you know, we’ve got new lenses out that change color. You know, depending on the light condition. You know, I’ve got these transition brown lenses and they call them drive wear lenses that really work well for hunting. And they’re polarized as well. You know, so they’re great for fishing.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, I was about to say, I want to touch on that because fishing is huge on our show.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, there’s nothing like a brown polarized lens being able to see the colors of the fish and the streams and the lakes. That really makes a difference.
SPEAKER 08 :
Now, Kevin Flesch always encourages people to get a lanyard with their glasses. Absolutely. He’s had experience in that, doesn’t he? I said, you know what? Alan probably did that on purpose. He probably didn’t even mention buying a lanyard.
SPEAKER 03 :
I remember Dad making me a nice pair of fishing glasses in the 80s. And we were out on the boat, and I looked down, and there they went. That was the last time I had those on without a lanyard.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, no doubt. But, no, you look at all the different things, you know, with motorcycle riding. A lot of people ride bikes, you know, bike riding and things. So is there – there’s really not one pair of glasses that’s going to cover everything, is there?
SPEAKER 03 :
Right, right. But, you know, depending on what you’re doing, a lot of times I can do one pair of glasses and change out the lenses.
SPEAKER 08 :
Oh, okay.
SPEAKER 03 :
You know, I have that one kit. I think you have. Right, right, yeah. You know, and we can, you know, use that same frame and snap different lenses in there depending on what you’re doing. Or, you know, some folks just, you know, they want a different type of frame. So I’ll make one for their hunting and one for their driving and that type of thing.
SPEAKER 08 :
Right. Do you see that a lot with sportsmen that, boy, they had no idea about? Now, we always see yellow lenses and orange lenses pretty much with people. But a lot of times people really didn’t know. They just think it’s a hunting lens, but maybe it’s not the right prescription for them. We talked about that on our haystack show.
SPEAKER 03 :
And that’s why any time somebody comes in for sports glasses or hunting glasses, that kind of stuff, you want to start off with a current lens. eye exam because that’ll make such a big difference if you have the right correction in there and then uh marrying that with the with the proper tint from whatever activity you’re into right now if people are you know shoot guns a lot and they’re using the open sights and things so many things have gone to these optics today you know i still have i still have folks that are more traditional alan no i still use iron sights and i’ve got lenses for that you know And my lenses, I still like to use my iron sights, but I also like to use my optics. I can use the same lens. I just adjust the frame a little bit depending on what I’m doing. So there’s a lot of different ways we can solve issues.
SPEAKER 08 :
Right, right. And then we do allow you, and I want to be super clear and take my time with this, because we do allow you, if you’re a shooter and, man, you’ve got a gun, you want to, bring in you can do that but make sure it’s unloaded uh three times make sure it’s unloaded all right and i’m going to check it too have it cased all right have it cased and uh make the appointment with alan all right and that way when you call just call 303-321-1578 um you guys can go in the back there and alan can see yeah i have a private office that we can go in exactly how you know you’re looking through your sites and seeing what’s going on so you can get that correction Where you need it, right? Absolutely.
SPEAKER 03 :
But, you know, I’ve had folks come in with a lot of different types of lenses. I’ve had my standard one with that upside-down bifocal, but I’m finding people are using a lot of different things.
SPEAKER 08 :
And what is that? You’ve said that upside-down bifocal. That sounds kind of weird.
SPEAKER 03 :
It’s a segment that’s up towards the top instead of the bottom. So you’ll put it up on top. And I set it basically at arm’s length where that front sight is. So you can bring in that front sight, and then you tilt back just a little bit, and you shoot. No, I’m sorry, just the opposite. So the bottom part is all distance. Right. So you’ll put it on, you’ll acquire your target, and then drop your head just a little bit to bring in your front sight and squeeze. That’s pretty slick for the iron sights. But the frame that I use, you can pinch in the nose pad, bring it up, and you’ve got your distance for all your optics because you don’t need that for your optics. It’s like your red dots and that type of thing.
SPEAKER 08 :
Because I tell you, I’ve noticed this too. You get into some of these ranges, you know, it’s a little bit dark maybe against a darker target, and you’re looking down at that black iron sight, and dude, you can’t see it, you know.
SPEAKER 03 :
And what’s kind of cool is, you know, depending on the type of lens, I like to use that brown transition for those. Because when you go indoors, and then they pretty much lighten up. You know, have a slight tint. And all that’s doing is just, it’s giving you kind of like that high definition. Right. Because you still got that light brown tint to it.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah. Now. $69 is an eye exam. We said this on Haystack the other day when Alan was on. If you cannot remember the last time you had a good, comprehensive eye exam, you probably are due for one. And you know what? Hey, you’re in your 30s. You don’t have to wait until you’re old to get an eye exam. I mean, get one. Then you’ve got a baseline, right?
SPEAKER 03 :
Absolutely. Yeah, I can’t believe some of these people come in in their 30s and 40s. You’ve ever had an eye exam? No. My vision is great. oh my god you know so we go through the dilation and all that kind of stuff make sure everything’s good and a lot of times just a little bit of a correction they put them on go oh wow i can see the leaves on the trees yeah yeah exactly but you know you don’t know what you’re missing You know, if you haven’t had that correction, you think everything’s normal.
SPEAKER 08 :
Right.
SPEAKER 03 :
Until you get that correction, oh, wow, I do see better.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah. And the doctor there does a great job. I’ve been seeing him for years with Alan. And, of course, you’ve got your traditional looking at the chart, but then they check pressures.
SPEAKER 03 :
Absolutely. He looks in the back of the eye. We can take snapshots of the eye and that type of thing. Right. Yeah, it’s a comprehensive eye exam.
SPEAKER 08 :
What does that mean when you blow that little puff in the eye?
SPEAKER 03 :
So he’s checking the pressure in the eye and see if we have high pressures. If he does, we’ll refer out. But that’s just one check on the glaucoma. You could have a high pressure, but that’s just normal for you. The big thing is to make sure it’s not affecting the optic nerve, and that’s what he’s looking for when he dilates. Look inside the eye. So there’s a lot of different factors that go into it.
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 03 :
Making sure everything’s okay.
SPEAKER 08 :
Right. Now, you mentioned snow skiing and maybe snowmobiles, whatever. Goggles, you can also work with lenses and goggles.
SPEAKER 03 :
Absolutely. You’ve got a pair of goggles, and maybe they’re your favorite goggles. Well, now I’ve got different adapters I can put in there and put your prescription in there. You just need to bring in your goggle and let me see if I have something that will fit them. Right.
SPEAKER 08 :
One-stop shop.
SPEAKER 03 :
That’s right.
SPEAKER 08 :
For everything you need.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yep.
SPEAKER 08 :
All right. Hey, if you hadn’t had an eye exam, call 303-321-1578. Again, if you’re going to do something with a firearm, be sure you ask for Allen. Again, make sure it’s unloaded. Make sure it’s cased when you go in. I tell you, you won’t find a more convenient spot to get to. Just right there at Monaco and Evans. Super easy parking. Walk about 20 feet from where you park and you’re in the front door. That’s right. I was driving real quick. I was driving down by Cherry Creek, your old location.
SPEAKER 03 :
You saw my parking lot?
SPEAKER 08 :
Yeah, I saw it. Yeah, and I was like…
SPEAKER 03 :
man what a blessing what he must feel to have this all that parking right there at his front door that’s right from what that used to be yeah no i i’ve driven down there too and you know i think we were there for 40 45 47 years long time yeah yeah
SPEAKER 08 :
Hey, Alan, take care of you. Hey, when you stop in, let them know you heard them here on Sportsman of Colorado or Haystack Hub. Just tell them KLZ 560, and we’d appreciate that. Check out their reviews at stackoptical.com. Alan, always appreciate it. Oh, thank you, Scott. I’ll stop by and see you soon. Okay. Thanks for being with us today. Hope you have a great rest of your weekend.
