SPEAKER 06 :
Welcome to Sportsman of Colorado. Thank you so much for joining us today. Hey, hope everyone had a wonderful, wonderful Thanksgiving. Well, hey, it’s a great privilege to have a good friend of ours on, and Chad’s been on with us a few times, but Chad Shearer is coming to us from the beautiful state of Montana today. So, Chad, how are you, sir?
SPEAKER 03 :
I’m fantastic. Good morning, Scott, and happy belated Thanksgiving.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yes, sir, absolutely. I tell you, you know, they always say as you get older, you know, time goes by faster. Man, that is not a lie, my friend. Son, it seems like, you know, it’s like every six months.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, I just said, is it already almost December? I couldn’t believe it.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, man, when you think about early on, you know, after the year, a lot of shows going around and banquets, all kinds of things like that. And you get in the summer and, you know, spring turkey, spring bear, all the different things there. And then before you know it, the hunting season, they may want to ride back. So, yeah, it is going quick. Hey, I want to talk with you a few things. One, we’re going to talk about your long range shooting school and the state I was born in, Texas. And it’s going to be the first time for that. And we’ll get that here in a second. But, you know, last year you helped us out a lot when we were fighting this whole mountain lion thing. And I just kind of want to get your thoughts a little bit on. Where we are today in kind of our hunting culture, and I mean, man, you watch around different states, it seems like that whole, the whole hunting thing is certainly under attack, and just want to get your thoughts. I mean, you’re certainly around a lot of different states, talk to a lot of different people. What are your thoughts just on where we are in hunting today?
SPEAKER 03 :
You know, it’s very important to be paying attention to this, and one of the things that I always encourage people to do is recruit other hunters because they say the hunter numbers are down. They say there’s less hunters than before, so our voice is less. However, then we have so many of the hunters that are saying, well, there’s just public land is crowded. There’s so many people on it. I can’t even find a spot to hunt. And so I think there’s – The people that are hunting are really into it. They’re going full bore. But I think one of the biggest things we’re facing is finding opportunities for those young people and getting them out. I mean, there’s a young man I took this year and took with his dad and his grandpa and went out and he got a deer. And I’m like, it’s so important to get that recruitment out there. And it’s important as hunters that we stick together, that we work together, and that we don’t fight amongst ourselves. It’s not the bow hunters versus the muzzleloader hunters versus the rifle hunters. It’s that, hey, we are all hunters. That’s our last name. And we need to do all we can. We need to support great conservation groups like Mule Deer Foundation, Rocky Mountain Elk, Sheep, and and, and support all them. I know you do that a lot. I do that a lot. I was the chairman of the board for the mule deer foundation and, uh, was a board member for nine years and volunteered to strictly volunteer position and, and just do all we can because yeah, we’re, we are under attack and we, we need to be vocal, but thankfully like the hunters in Colorado joined together and, and people, uh, were able to make a difference and, and, uh, We need to manage wildlife by biology and not by bureaucracy. Right.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah. Very true. Very true. And as I said at the beginning, man, you guys did a lot. You know, you’re influenced by the Mule Deer Foundation. A lot of different groups came together. I was emceeing some pheasant forever banquets. And at the end of them raising money for their cause, they raised some money to help, you know, Dan Gates in Colorado is responsible for wildlife management. So it was neat to see different groups come together.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yep, yep. We need to just take a stand and try to say they do a great job. They’re super people. There’s so many great organizations out there, but we need to support them. And it’s really cool, the different missions. And I know you’re like me. You like a variety. You were hunting the other day, and I was duck hunting yesterday, but the day before I was hunting. beer and the day before that I was on Nell. I like it all. I’m all about it. The biggest thing I think of is watching those sunrises and breathing that cool air and just watching the world wake up. Yesterday was so crazy. We’re sitting there and had the duck decoys around the edge of the water on this inlet and a 6×6 whitetail buck right at first light walked right through the edge of our decoy spread going to this island and i’m like how beautiful is that yeah how cool is that and how sad it was i had already sold my deer and you know what man and we do we take all the pictures stuff but man so many times i look at that picture and i’m like that there’s no way that’s telling the story of what i just looked at
SPEAKER 06 :
you know nope i always say god’s the greatest artist of them all yeah for sure it’s so pretty yeah chad shearer’s our guest hey shoot straight tv on the pursuit channel as well and um i could have gone on for 30 minutes all the accolades that chad um groups he’s with things he’s done but you know what he has just been a great friend um to the hunting industry for many many years and uh shared his influence to keep us on a good path here chad one of your connections is with uh bagar rifles which you are bpi i think that’s the proper name of the company right right yeah yeah bagar and cva cva right what have you seen in the transition of rifles over these last you know five ten years
SPEAKER 03 :
You know, I think a lot of it is the hunters are more in tune of what they like, and they’re more vocal about what they like. And so we have pushed the envelope on trying to give them the best quality they can and introducing guns that are, of course, accurate, but they expect that. Hunters expect accuracy, but then they want features. They want features like a really smooth bolt and the stock work. doing carbon fiber barrels now, the cure barrels on it, and we’re doing carbon fiber stocks. So we’re producing guns that are in that 5 1⁄2 to 6 1⁄2 pound, and it’s just so important that we have that functionality. And I had a buddy of mine yesterday, or not yesterday, a couple days ago, he hiked in six miles after elk and shot an elk, and thankfully my son was able to help pack it out But you’re going further. You’re trying to get away from people and get back in there. And so you want that lightweight rifle. And then the other thing is people want them suppressor ready. So having them already threaded, ready to go. So the biggest thing is I really feel are the features. And Bergara makes some incredible guns. They just came out with the SEMA. And that’s 100% carbon fiber stock. And we use this this year. I also took it to Africa. And it’s just an enjoyable gun to carry.
SPEAKER 06 :
Wow. What calibers are they making in that, Seema?
SPEAKER 03 :
You know, there’s a whole variety of colors, all the way down from 22-250 all the way up to 300 wind mags.
SPEAKER 06 :
Oh, wow. Okay.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 06 :
Wow, that’s awesome.
SPEAKER 03 :
And, of course, your PRCs, your 6.5 PRC and 7 PRC, which are hot topics.
SPEAKER 06 :
Boy, I started to say those are really – I mean, I’ll be honest. I’ve shot a 300-weathery mag like my whole life. But then, all these last few years, you know, checking out some of these different guns and the 7PRC and things. Matter of fact, I shot a deer a few weeks ago with that 7PRC and I’m telling you, man, that was an awesome gun.
SPEAKER 03 :
You know, it’s flat shoot and it’s hard hitting. I always, because I do so many elk seminars, want to use the latest and greatest just to see what they’ll do. We took a number of elk in different places last year using 7PRC and Because I was like, is it really what they’re all saying? And, yeah, it really is. Because I’m a 300 win back guy. I’ve been a fan of that for years, and it’s great. We’re actually looking forward to it. I know it’s a ways off, but you and I were talking about how time flies. We’re going to be doing two wild game feed events in Colorado this year, February 16th in Colorado Springs and February 17th in Fort Collins. at Front Range Baptist. So I know you and I have ran into each other at those events before. Sure, sure. We always have a great time at those.
SPEAKER 06 :
Absolutely. And folks, I’ll tell you what, I’ll make a note right now and get you back on and promote both of those. But I’m telling you, these are great, great events. What’s the name of the church there on the 16th?
SPEAKER 03 :
On the 16th, it’ll be Grace Baptist Church in Colorado Springs. Okay, Grace Baptist. February is Front Range.
SPEAKER 06 :
All right, and then Front Range up in Fort Collins. And I’m telling you, man, it is so great. And, man, a lot of people. And Chad comes stocked with a lot of great giveaways. And I’m not talking about just a hat or something. I’m talking about guns, muzzleloaders, bows, I mean, all kinds of stuff. So it is a great event for sure. And great for the family. And that’s what I like about it too, Chad.
SPEAKER 03 :
That’s what it’s all about. It’s about getting the families involved in the outdoors. And that’s what our show has been about for the last 20 years. And our boys started when they were four and five on the show, and now they’re in their 20s. And I have a grandson on the show this year.
SPEAKER 06 :
Well, you mentioned the show. Let’s go there for a minute. Shoot Straight TV with you and your lovely wife, Marsha. And like you say, you’ve been doing this a long time. But when you talk about what’s changed with that through the years, I imagine quite a bit with just the abilities of filming now and just all the different ways to do that.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, it’s still about gathering content and getting out there and making it exciting. But the distribution of the show is just so many different more avenues where people can watch it. It used to just be on the on the main cable and dish and direct and all that. And now you can watch it on so many other outlets. And we did put that on our website, ShootStraightTV.com, where people can see where to tune in on it. And it always makes it a big help.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, for sure. I mean, a lot of times I wonder when I’m watching, like, man, it’s hard for sometimes just me and a buddy, you know, like putting on a stock. I can’t imagine having several people and a camera guy, different things like that. Talk a minute and just what it takes to navigate all that sometimes.
SPEAKER 03 :
You know, one of the things, because having been an outfitter and guide for 30 years up here in Montana and then doing the show 20 years, I’m all about wanting to get the best content but yet make it happen. And sometimes it happens fast, as you know. And I’m really blessed that our family, our boys and Marsh, myself, we all are able to run cameras. And so we’ve been able to not have a huge crew out there because we’ll typically have the shooter, the cameraman, and then if we’ve got somebody with us, Because when you’re stocking in on animals, having more people can definitely be a challenge.
SPEAKER 06 :
You always got the one guy that wants to peek around you. You go, stay right behind me, and you look around and the guy’s looking way out.
SPEAKER 03 :
Oh, yeah. It’s totally all about that. Our oldest son, Walker, he does a lot of the filming and produces our show, and he’s grown up on it since he was young and worked with our original producers and wide-run camera, too, and And it’s just fun because they know what we need. I know how they think, and it’s just so great. I mean, yesterday afternoon we were out there, and just it was fun. Walker and Wyatt were hunting, and I had little Bennett in a front little harness with me, and we had three generations out there. And I’m like, you know what? This is as good as it gets right here.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, man, for sure. You’re listening to Sportsman of Colorado. Chad Shearer is our guest. Chad, I’ve got to hit a quick break real quick. When we come back, though, folks, we’re going to tell you about a great, great opportunity for you to learn about long-range shooting with the Bagara Academy with Chad. So, hey, don’t go anywhere. More coming back right after this.
SPEAKER 12 :
Here’s why you need personal injury attorney Kevin Flesch on your side. He understands the way the jury thinks. In the context of a personal injury case, you’ve been hurt by someone else’s negligence. The idea is that you’re going to try to recover so that you can get back to where you were just prior to that incident occurring. What that really means from a jurist’s perspective is that you’re going to be asking them to award you money. So when we talk about fairness, we’re talking about six people that you don’t know. Those six people view the evidence and make a unanimous decision that will decide what the fair value is. When you’re the one who’s hurt, you have a good idea of what you think it’s worth. The question is, can you persuade those other individuals whom you don’t know and were witnesses to believe that’s what the case is worth?
SPEAKER 06 :
Most of us know that our pets age much faster than we do, but we often don’t think about what faster aging means for their health. While a seven-year-old child is just starting out in life, a seven-year-old pet is already a senior with needs that have begun to change. Hey, this is Scott Whatley for My Friends at Lone Tree Veterinary Medical Center. Their staff understands how the changing needs of our aging pets can often go unnoticed, and that’s why they recommend wellness exams every six months. Catching problems early on before they become chronic or difficult to treat is just good medicine. Every November, senior pets are celebrated at Lone Tree Veterinary Medical Center, and this year, they’re doing Senior Wednesdays. All pets seven years and older will receive $10 off their wellness exam every Wednesday during November. So if your senior is due for a wellness checkup, there’s no need to wait. You can beat the rush by scheduling your senior’s November checkup today. Call 303-708-8050. That’s 303-708-8050. Lone Tree Veterinary Medical Center. It’s the place where my pets go.
SPEAKER 09 :

SPEAKER 06 :
Welcome back to Sportsman of Colorado. If you’re just joining us, Chad Shearer is with us. And Chad, Shoot Straight TV on the Pursuit channel. Be sure and catch that. I watch it every time, every episode, him and his wife Marcia, their family, just a great, great show. So I hope you’ll catch that. And I want to mention this in this segment as well. Chad mentioned February 16th here in 2026, he’s going to be at the Grace Baptist Church for a wild game dinner. And then March 17th at Front Range Baptist Church up north. in the Fort Collins area there, and normally I hit the one in the Fort Collins, but I’ll try to make the one in February as well. So February 16th, March 17th, two wild game dinners, and Chad and his wife will be here, Marcia, and just a great, great event for the whole family. All right, Chad, the Begara Academy Long Range Shooting School. Tell us about that and how that got started and how long you guys have been doing that.
SPEAKER 03 :
yep i’m happy to do it and one thing i just wanted to mention um you said february 16th in colorado springs and then the next night february 17th we’re doing them back to back oh they’re fed i’m sorry i misunderstood they’re back to back okay i totally misunderstood all right so february 16th and then february 17th will be in fort collins okay correct my bad all right but let’s Let’s talk about the Bergara Academy. It’s exciting. We have the Bergara Academy. We’ve been doing it up here in Montana for several years. We have one in Wyoming. It’s just exciting. We’re bringing it to Texas. We have a lot of people in Texas. We have people… saying, hey, do you have more of a southern venue that you can do in the wintertime? And we have set this up, and we’ve only got a couple spots available right now. We have it for December 12th and 13th or December 15th and 16th, and then we’re going to announce some other dates. But it’s a two-day long-range shooting class. It includes three nights of your lodging, all your meals. Bergara Firearms will be using ammo, optics, gear. And then what is so cool, if you go to the class, Bergara gives you a VIP discount where, depending on the rifle, you get 30% to 35% off. And it’s fantastic. So you can purchase a new gun, which that discount is. is great. And we really love doing these courses. The thing that we find out is it’s long-range shooting, but when people practice at longer ranges, it allows them to make those ethical shots at the closer ranges, and they become not a problem. Because if we’re practicing at 1,000 yards or 800 yards, all of a sudden… If you are doing little things, they’re amplified. You really see it. So once you start practicing and honing it in, you become such a better shot. And we cover so many things at this school.
SPEAKER 06 :
Wow. And, I mean, when did you start seeing this growth in what we term long-range shooting?
SPEAKER 03 :
You know, we’ve been seeing it for the last several years. We’ve been doing these schools for about seven or eight years up here in Montana. And the boys and I are the instructors, and we do it from a hunting perspective. And we go everything from firearm safety to the rifle design, your basic marksmanship, your scope theory, your effects of wind. We spend a lot of time working with wind. But then we also use the latest and greatest in ballistic calculators, in ballistic apps. using the range finder, showing people how you can sync that with your gun. So it’s not, oh, let’s just hold 12 inches high or let’s aim up here. You dial that scope. You know exactly where you’re going to hit. And then we talk about dialing it. But then there’s a lot of people say, well, I’m going to go to Alaska. I’ve got to make sure this bolt moves 50 inches wide. We go through the math and we teach them how you can range and how you can figure out the size of an object out there. Say you’re in Colorado and you’re like, man, I really want a big mule deer. Is that one big enough? We teach you how to do that. Go over ballistics. Go over milradiant or mils versus MOA, rapid bolt manipulation. And we just pack a lot of stuff. And then one of the great things is Marcia does the cooking. Yeah. On top of it all.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah. And I tell you, there is nothing that replaces when you’re in the field like that, having confidence in your rifle and not have to think about anything. There’s nothing that replaces that.
SPEAKER 03 :
No, there’s not. And I tell people it’s muscle memory. I teach a school all summer. And all of a sudden, when I go to take a shot, I’m going through every little thing in my head super fast, proper position, breathing, how I’m holding the gun, making sure it’s level. And it just has made me a better shot just doing that because how you practice is how you’re going to perform out there.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yep, absolutely. So the dates will be December 12th and 13th or the 15th and 16th at this point?
SPEAKER 03 :
Yes, sir. Okay. We’re going to be announcing some other dates, and it’s just going to be exciting. If they want information, of course, you can go on Vergara’s website. If you want to email us, you can email us at shootstraighttv at gmail.com, or you can give us a call at 406-781-9027, and Marcia helps with all the booking on that, and they can get you. get in on this exciting school we’re going to be doing.
SPEAKER 06 :
Okay, so that was shootstraighttv at gmail.com?
SPEAKER 03 :
That’s correct.
SPEAKER 06 :
All right, okay. I’ll put that on our social media as well with that phone number as well. Okay, and so your cost then is just one cost includes everything.
SPEAKER 03 :
It does. It’s a two-day course. and it’s all-inclusive, and we use the highest-end rifles and the optics and everything’s there. You just got to show up, and then at the end of it, you get an opportunity to purchase a new Bergara at a great discount, and it just allows people to go, man, I get to try this out, try before you buy. This is something, but it really helps you become a better shooter. And it’s just exciting. We’ve had a lot of folks come up, and we keep the school filled up here in Montana, and they do in Wyoming, and now we’re doing Texas. Cool.
SPEAKER 06 :
All right, so what will be our cost for the school?
SPEAKER 03 :
You know, that school is $21.95, which is a great, great deal. And it’s located just outside of Waco, Texas, in a little town called Marlin. Okay. You just get down there. If you fly in, we’ll pick you up at the airport or if you drive in from Colorado. And it’s just going to be a fun time.
SPEAKER 06 :
All right. So $21.95, folks. And, hey, Chad just went through it all. This is going to be a great opportunity. And I think sometimes, Chad, people think, man, I don’t want to go there. There’s going to be all these, like, expert marksman shooters. And you get people that have never shot long range at all that come to these, don’t you?
SPEAKER 03 :
You know, it is so fun to me. Um, I’ll just give you a couple of examples. The first night when we do orientation, I asked people, what would you like to accomplish? And I hear everything I hear. Um, we get several law enforcement guys and say, you know, I’ve shot pistol my whole life and my whole career for 30 years, but I I’d never really had an opportunity to, to shoot long range rifles or more than 50 or a hundred yards. We see that. I had a man that came and said, hey, I’ve got some property. I’ve got antelope on it. I just want to get an antelope. And I’ve never really hunted or I haven’t really shot. I want to learn the right way. And it was so cool. He came and I watched him progress throughout the class. And then he sends me a picture, hunting season this last year, and says, hey, look at this. I got my first antelope. And so… We see everything. We see a lot of fathers and sons. This would make an incredible Christmas gift for people. They come up, and I had a dad say, I’m really not, I don’t know that I’m into this, but it’s something my son’s interested in, and it’s something I can learn and have time together and spend time with him, and they came and excelled. We’ve got fathers and daughters that come, husbands and wives, and And it’s very a family-oriented situation. And we even have young people. I’ve had dads that bring their – and we encourage them to have their hunter safety and be 12 years old. They come and we teach them from the beginning so that they get that good ground basis. It’s no different than if a guy wanted to go out and learn how to play golf. Go with someone that can show you the ropes he don’t – get those bad habits. Or if you’ve been a shooter for a long time, you’re like, man, I’ve hunted, I’ve had success, but I really want to stretch it out, or I might want to go shoot a PRS match, or I want to learn more about manipulating my scope and dialing it, then it’s perfect for that, too. We take all different levels, and then we also do advanced classes. We do those up in Montana in the summer and That’s a prerequisite. Take the beginner class, and we do advanced, and it goes even deeper into all this.
SPEAKER 06 :
Wow, that’s great. All right, so if you’re interested in this, hey, here’s an email, shootstraighttv at gmail.com. You can get in touch with Chad there, or you can call 406-781-9027, and be sure to let them know you heard them here on Sportsman of Colorado. We’d appreciate that as well. December 12th and 13th or the 15th and 16th. Three nights lodging, great meals by Marcia, and really everything you need right there, right?
SPEAKER 03 :
It is. It’s going to be exciting. We’re looking forward to this new venue and just the people. I mean, they become lifelong friends and it’s just awesome. We tell people, you come, you sign up as a guest, but we want you to leave as friends and And it’s just so exciting to spend time. And we also put a hunting twist on it. So we go over a lot of different things on hunting scenarios. And I haven’t been a world champion elk caller. I even show elk calling in there with them. and go over tips and techniques to make them have more success in the field.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah, absolutely. Hey, you mentioned kids, taking kids hunting and stuff. What’s a few tips for, uh, you know, fathers taking their kids out these first few times and, and taking them out on a hunt. What’s a few tips to, to make that a good experience for the child that sometimes a dad may overlook.
SPEAKER 03 :
Now that is, I am happy to do that. Um, I just did a podcast with a, Another magazine company here just recently about that, because we’ve been really blessed with our boys. They started out young and we took them. The first thing you want to do is you want to make sure they’re ready. Never put a kid in a situation until they’re ready. Set them up to succeed. And with some young people, they’re ready at an earlier age. Some they need to be a bit longer. Number one, I always went over safety. And I was a hunter safety instructor. Now I’m a certified NRA instructor. Safety is number one with them. And we teach them not to be afraid of the guns, but to respect them. And never touch them when an adult isn’t around. And of course, we can go over safety and make sure they’re in a locked, secure place, unloaded. That’s just a given. But when you start to get them ready, you want to prepare them. You don’t want to just take them out there and say, okay, there’s the deer, shoot it. You need to set them up. If they were going to play a sport, you see these young people playing soccer and basketball, you just don’t throw them out there and say, here’s the ball. You set them up to succeed. And so you take them to a range. I always like starting them out with a .22 or a little .17 and have different targets. Don’t just set it up and have it all ready for them where they just have to look and squeeze the trigger. have them find the target. Target acquisition is so important for a young person because a dad or a mom or an uncle is out there and they get frustrated when the little guy or gal is going, I can’t find it. Put some targets at different ranges and have the gun laying on the bench, have them pick it up, find it, but then practice with shooting sticks and get them proper position or off bipods and Small game gophers, prairie dogs, stuff like that, doing that all summer will make them better prepared for the hunt. And then when you take them on a hunt, the key is it’s their hunt. It’s about them. Don’t go out when you’re like, man, I’m trophy hunting, and you take your kid on their first hunt. You want to hunt for them first. And if you do that right and you realize it’s about them, make sure they have warm clothes, warm gear. You don’t have to break the bank. You just get the best you can afford or find some other families that their kids have outgrown it and get some new stuff. But always make sure their hands are warm, their feet are warm, get hot hands. Some kids are all about the hike and do it, but don’t take them on a five-mile march all the way back again when they’re a little guy. Man, I want to go with you again, Dad. That was so fun. Do little things. And one thing I always love doing, and I know you love turkey hunting too. I love it. Sometimes those spring hunts, you can get them out there. The weather’s nice. And no matter what, make sure they know the gun. And I’m a big advocate of this. In states and places you can use suppressors on your gun, if you can get a suppressor, it takes the noise level way down. It takes a recoil down, and it makes it enjoyable. Because a lot of kids are afraid of that sound and that recoil. And I always say, get the best caliber that you can get them with. The biggest caliber to knock that animal down, but don’t over-caliber them too much where they – Get recoil shy at a young age. And a lot of states have mentor programs now where they can start at 10. Many states are 12. You can go down to Texas and you can start younger. We started our boys down in Texas when they were a lot younger. And so, like I said, each young person is different. Each situation is different. But no matter what, get them out there. And if you don’t have suppressors, carry earmuffs with them. And put those earmuffs on them before they shoot. Number one, you want their hearing protected, but you don’t want them to get bad habits. You don’t want them scared of it. Yeah.
SPEAKER 06 :

You can email Chad at shootstraighttv at gmail.com, or you can simply give him a call at 406-781-9027. And like I say, I appreciate you letting him know you heard about him here on Sportsman of Colorado as well. Last few minutes here, Chad, by the way, You know, every year, and you’ve been doing this many, many, many years, but, man, you learn something every hunt. Anything that happened this year where, hey, kind of a new lesson or something that stands out in your mind that you just picked up this year that helped you?
SPEAKER 03 :
Well, I’ll tell you, I had a bow hunt this year, and I was working a bow, and that’s my thing. I love hunting elk. I love hunting with a bow, muzzleloader, rifle, whatever. I just love going after it. And I had a buddy with me, and we were out there in the field, and got on this bull, and he had cows with him, and there were some satellite bulls. And I was like, this is going to be a hard bull to pull away. And he kind of looked at me like, yeah, I don’t know if we’re going to be able to get this one done. And we set up, and having turkey hunted so much, I’ve been able to hunt turkeys in 20 different states, it really has made me a better elk hunter because I use a lot of tactics. And I got set up on this bull, and I said, we’re just going to work it. We’re just going to do it. And so I determined we were going to be super patient on him. I was within about 200 to 300 yards of him. He was working cows. Cows started bedding. It was midday. I mean, it was a midday bull. I would chirp on my cow call, and he’d answer me. That’s just not super interesting. I said, we’re just going to play this game like a big hand-up gobbler And so I’d chirp on my cow call just once, and I’d sit. And I did that for like 45 minutes, every 5 to 10 minutes. I wasn’t aggressive. I’d just do one call. And I was kind of up against a rock wall and some timber. And about 30, 45 minutes into it, I let out a small bugle, and I pointed my grand tube so it was way down below me. I hit that bugle. He fired up, but he just was staying with those cows. And then about five minutes later, I do another chirp. I worked that bull an hour and a half. And finally, he couldn’t handle it anymore. And he came in bugling, left his cows, came in, made a good shot. I was using a dart and bow. And that bull stepped out in my opening, took the shot. Boom, he tipped over. We’re going to show that footage when we’re down in Colorado this year. But the biggest thing is, patient and I’m aggressive when I need to be aggressive but you have to take that bull’s temperature you have to watch that wind I had a perfect wind and I knew it was going to stay consistent and you just monitor it and you just I just kept playing that game and finally it worked doesn’t always work on an elk but you through years of experience I’ve learned be patient with them Don’t get too aggressive and make them come look for you.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah. You know, you said something there real quick. You said something midday hunt. I don’t know about you, but, man, I’ve hunted with so many guys. 10 o’clock, they think, oh, time to go to the lodge and come back at 3.30 or 4. Man, there’s a lot of animals killed between 10 and 3, isn’t there?
SPEAKER 03 :
There is. And I’m an advocate of giving them their bedding area. Oh, sure, sure. Yeah, I agree. And I’m all about that. But… You have to look at the situation. And I’d been on that bull since sunrise and been shadowing him. And finally, I got into a place and I determined I’m just either going to see if I can coax him or I’m just staying there all day till he fires up in the evening and then try and get ahead of him. And I had to make that judgment call. And a lot of it depends on how far in you are and where you’re at. But, yeah, for sure, there’s a lot of animals you can take midday. And like I say, I don’t like bumping them out of their bedding area. So I pulled him into me where I was at.
SPEAKER 06 :
Right, yeah, very cool. All right, folks, hey, Begara Academy Long Range Shooting School. Once again, you can email Chad, shootstraighttv at gmail.com. You can give them a call, 406-781-9027. You know, I’d recommend Len Lyle’s Chevrolet to anyone. And with their low overhead, that means lower prices.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, we really do have something in common.
SPEAKER 05 :
Len Lyle Chevrolet, go east and pay the least. Chevy, find new roads.

Here’s your Water Talk Minute with Paul the Waterman, brought to you by Water Pros.
SPEAKER 02 :
Folks, everybody needs to go to the EPA website and check out the contaminated candidate list. There’s unregulated contaminants that have been in our drinking water forever. And what that means is that municipalities don’t have to test for them. So we have 1,4-dioxin. It’s an unregulated contaminant that’s been in the water supply since the early 1900s. We have synthetic estrogen that’s in our water supply. We have pesticides, herbicides in our water supply. So this is something that educate yourself. This is why we need a point-of-use reverse osmosis system for our drinking water, because of all the contaminants that the EPA is not allowing our municipalities to tell us about.

Welcome back to Sportsman of Colorado. If you’re just joining us, welcome. And, hey, I hope everyone enjoyed a great Thanksgiving and hit all your Black Friday deals. Now, last week on the show, we had Ryan Resch, Big Horn Firearms, and he gave all his Black Friday specials. But I want to get him back on here a few minutes today because, hey, there’s still time to take advantage of this. So, Ryan, welcome back. How are you, sir?
SPEAKER 15 :
I’m doing great. How are you, Scott?
SPEAKER 06 :
Good, good. Thanks for having me back. Are you weighing? See, you’re a thin guy, though. Man, I hate guys like you. You can probably eat anything you want, and you never gain weight, you know?
SPEAKER 15 :
Man, I wish that was the truth, man. You know, getting in the gym five days a week is getting kind of old.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah. I drive by one five days a week. Hey, yeah. Absolutely. Well, good. But, yeah, I hope you guys had a great Thanksgiving. But, hey, like I say, there’s still time here on these Black Friday deals still carrying on today. So tell us about them.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, I mean, there’s really not much. You’re not going to be able to get a discount on today. So, you know, come on down, and we’re going to work you out a great deal. We’ve got some firearms that are qualifying right now for 20% off from some big-name brands today. you know, come into the store and then we can kind of point those items out to you. But we’ve got bolt guns, uh, pistols, revolvers, uh, some AR 15s, uh, you know, a little bit of this, a little bit of that, uh, that we are, uh, selling at 20% off, uh, the sticker price. So, uh, some really great deals there. I mean, that’s basically dealer cost on a lot of this stuff. Um, great inventory, you know, a few items that are discounted might have some little blames here or there, but all in all, these are all new guns, quality inventory, nothing that you wouldn’t be excited to get a 20% discount on, that’s for sure. We also got 20% off of Savior equipment, which is going to be your gun cases, range bags, rifle bags, ammo pouches, things like that. So And then we’ve got 20% off EOTech as our featured optic discount. But we are also today extending a 10% off your entire cart. So keep in mind, though, on the items that are marked 20% discount, you’ll get your 20% off on those. And then all other items in your cart will also get an additional 10% off. Okay. Really great day to save. Friday’s the day. If you can break free and get out of the big box stores, come see us. We’re here to really make some deals, too. So if there’s something else, we can do a little bit better on it. We just want to make this an event that everybody can walk away from feeling like they scored big time.
SPEAKER 06 :
Sure. And you’re also, now, again, be honest, we’re transparent, we’re pre-recording this here, but on Black Friday, that’s where you were covering the 6.5% excise tax, correct?
SPEAKER 15 :
So we’ve been doing that all of November, basically. So we’ve bumped that up, and we’re going to be doing basically 10% off across the board. Wow, okay. All right, cool. 10% off is the lowest discount you’re going to see on Black Friday.
SPEAKER 06 :
Yeah. And, you know, people have to understand, man, new guns especially. I mean, man, when you’re talking about discounts on guns like this and these range of percentages off, man, like you said, man, that’s at cost or sometimes below.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, yeah. And then, I mean, some products like Franke’s running some manufacturer rebates now. So, you know, if you pair this discount with a manufacturer rebate, I mean, you’re below dealer costs. Yeah. Definitely some great deals to be had. And, you know, you’ll see some promos coming around in December. But, you know, Black Friday, we’re doing the best of the best. Yeah, absolutely. Definitely don’t want to miss it.
SPEAKER 06 :
Hey, we ran out of time last week. And then there’s an effort that you’re involved with called Paws to Protect. So I wanted to get you on here, like I say, a few minutes today. Let’s talk about that as well.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, so we partner with Paws to Protect. And there’s a number of other – if you go to their website – You’ll see a number of other dealers that are also participating in the program basically providing free, safe gun storage in different capacities to active duty service members. The goal here is just to be able to provide safe gun storage to anybody who needs it, they’re going overseas for a deployment or they’ve got kids in the house or family members coming into town and they need to properly secure those firearms while they have family visiting for the holidays. Or if somebody’s just maybe at risk right now of hurting themselves or something like that, this program is really geared towards service members, but There is no rule saying to turn anybody away who’s in need. So, you know, if you’re struggling right now and you are, you know, needing to secure some firearms, come see us. We have some free lock boxes here. They are the Hornady Extra Large Key Lock Box. We’re giving those out for free to anybody who mentions the program. And then there are also some of the partners that are working with this program are offering on-site storage. in different capacities for long guns, and some of the other partners may even be offering a long gun lockbox storage box. Here at Bighorn, we have the handgun boxes, and we’re happy to provide those to anybody in need. So, you know, come see us. It’s a great program. It’s all for the right reasons, and it’s to keep the guns secure and out of the hands of people who, you know, don’t need access to them.
SPEAKER 06 :
Sure. And, you know, that is an important thing. And I mean, good night. I mean, you know, I’m all for teaching your kids about guns and to respect guns and guns aren’t bad, different things like that. But we also have to be smart in our homes of keeping guns secure, don’t we?
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, absolutely. I mean, firearms are a tool at the end of the day. And if you don’t know how to use them properly or don’t have experience with, you know, any tool for that matter, you can really hurt yourself, you know, or somebody else for that matter. So, you know, it’s our duty as responsible gun owners to make sure that we’re keeping them, you know, out of the hands of unauthorized individuals. So that is really the goal of this program. It’s free. I mean, we’re giving out free devices. So, you know, Please, if you’re in need, come down to the store, talk to us, and take us up on this opportunity here to put a free handgun lockbox in your home. If you know somebody else who’s in need of one, come and get one and give it to them. Really, we’re not turning anybody away on this. If you don’t meet the… really specific criteria, you know, or you’re part of that focus group that this was pointed towards, it’s okay. Just come see us and let us get you one of these lock boxes. It’s really important.
SPEAKER 06 :
All right. And for more information on this, you can go to the website, as Ryan mentioned. It’s PAUSE, P-A-U-S-E, to protect.org. I’m looking at it right now and a great website, a lot of information there. But hey, now’s the time to save big at bighornfirearms.com. And, hey, stop by. Mention you heard Ryan here on Sportsman of Colorado. Pick up a gun safe there. And, hey, and even for a friend, this is a great program, and we want everyone to certainly be safe. So get by and see them now. And, again, let them know you heard them here on the show, and we’d appreciate that. So, Ryan, thanks for everything, my friend, and I’ll get by and see you soon.
SPEAKER 15 :
Okay, sounds good, Scott. Thank you so much. We love the show. We love partnering with you.
SPEAKER 06 :
Well, man, I’m excited about 2026 already, bud. You guys have been terrific for us, so we appreciate your friendship and support as well. Of course. All right, buddy. That’s Ryan Resch, Bighorn Firearms, 2175 South Jasmine, and great store, great staff, great deals all right now, 2175 South Jasmine. Thanks for being with us today for Sportsman of Colorado.
