SPEAKER 08 :
Welcome to Sportsman of Colorado, Colorado’s premier outdoor radio show heard every Saturday afternoon on KLZ 560 with insights on hunting, fishing, archery, guns, and ammo from Colorado’s top outfitters featuring the industry’s leading experts on how to enhance your experience in the great outdoors. Now, here’s your host, Scott Watley.
SPEAKER 04 :
Welcome to Sports from Colorado. Thank you so much for joining us today. Hey, we’ve got a great show in store for you. Just a quick reminder now, you miss our live show on Saturdays 1 to 2. You can catch us twice on Sundays, 8 and 8, 8 to 9 a.m., 8 to 9 p.m., right here on KLZ 560, of course. And then the following Thursday, 9 to 10 a.m., you can catch our show. So hopefully one of those times will work out for you. Again, wherever you get your podcast, you can get ours. And we are super, super excited today to announce a new partnership for us with the Colorado Wildlife Council. Now, some of you may know everything about them. Some of you may not know much about them, but I hope over the next year here in the coming months, we’re going to be able to enlighten you about this group and the fantastic work that they have been doing here in the state of Colorado. And I met a gentleman. If you know me personally, you know my truck is wrapped. We’ll give some transparency here. And all of you know Kevin Flesch, of course, on the show. And I was at Kevin’s office and then I came out and there was a card on my truck from a gentleman. And he was with the Wildlife Council and wanted to meet. So we did that over the last few months. And now very, very happy to introduce Brian Gwynn to you with the Colorado Wildlife Council. How are you, sir? Doing well. Thanks, Scott. Hey, it’s great to meet you and appreciate you. Putting a card on my truck, man, because this is going to be so good for Colorado. I really believe this partnership is to let us do what you and I have kind of talked about, educating our sportsmen, men and women, our outdoorsmen, of really about the Colorado Wildlife Council. So I’m really excited about this partnership.
SPEAKER 13 :
Yeah. Well, the mission of the Colorado Wildlife Council is to educate the public on the benefits of hunting and fishing. And so when I saw your truck, I figured I’d do it for myself and reach out, see where it led. So I’m happy it led this to this partnership. Absolutely.
SPEAKER 04 :
Absolutely. Now, there are nine people in my research or nine people that make up the Wildlife Council. And here’s the way I like the way it was phrased on some documents I was reading. Nine individuals. And I think that’s important. They didn’t say nine great hunters that have taken a lot of game or caught the biggest fish. Nine individuals. And I think that’s a key thing to just get some different perspectives, don’t you? Yeah.
SPEAKER 13 :
the council is designed by statute and per the statute we have a number of individuals that comprise the council and we have representatives from the east slope and the west slope hunting community angling community the ag community municipality committee some marketing representatives so there’s a nice of backgrounds that comprises the council.
SPEAKER 04 :
Right. And 1998 is when this came into effect with the Colorado Wildlife Council. I was not there at the beginning, so I can only speak so much to it. Right. But folks, for you that may buy a license, you will notice on there, it’s $1.50, right? Yep. And that says that goes toward Some education things, right? Yep. I’m taking mine out right now.
SPEAKER 13 :
So if you go right above the signature block on your green license, there’s a $1.50 charge for the Wildlife Ed Fund surcharge. And that’s us. We don’t call ourselves the Wildlife Ed Fund Surcharge because it doesn’t have as good of a ring to it. Our trade name is the Colorado Wildlife Council, and that’s what that charge goes to.
SPEAKER 04 :
What type of, and you guys, I assume, have meetings all the time to see what’s going on in the state. And I know you work close with CPW and things like that too. So what do these meetings look like that you guys have even internally?
SPEAKER 13 :
Well, our main mission is to create a public education campaign on the benefits of conservation, the benefits of hunting and fishing to the general public. And so we see ourselves as really the voice that’s speaking to those who are not hunters and anglers, those who might be new to the state, those that may not even go outside that much. And we’re trying to impress upon them the importance of hunting and fishing to wildlife conservation, the impact that license fees have on really forming the background and the basis for science-based wildlife management. And so our meetings, which are monthly, and they’re open to the public, so I would encourage any of you who would like to come or tune in, they’re They’re recorded on Zoom, so you can always check out what we’re doing, but mostly we’re managing a public information campaign at various levels. We have a spending authority that’s capped by the statute. So the buck 50 on everybody’s license goes into a pot. This is speaking generally, but whatever’s in that pot, we get to spend on a public information campaign. And we hire a professional advertising firm to help us with our messaging and our target audience. And we help guide them in all aspects of that campaign. So you might see our… our commercials or advertisements on social media. You might see them during ABS games or Broncos games. We’ve got billboards on I-70 and up and down the 25 corridor at various times during the year. We have some gas station videos going on right now. So most of our meetings are managing that account and also thinking creatively about new opportunities to let people know what the council does. But When they know what the council does, they’re really going to learn about the importance of hunting and fishing as a backbone for science-based wildlife conservation. Sure.
SPEAKER 04 :
Times have changed when you get gas and all of a sudden, go inside and get this. I mean, the first time I was like, what in the world? Yeah, who’s talking to me? Again, Brian Gwynn is with us. It’s the Colorado Wildlife Council. And, again, you’re going to be hearing more. about them here on the show. And like I say, I’m super honored to be able to work with them, represent them, so to speak. And we just wrapped up some things with International Sportsman’s Expo and got into a lot of great conversations there as well. And really just want to bring the educational side of this because there’s a lot to know about the outdoors. And sometimes, and again, I go back to the nine individuals that I talked about earlier. Sometimes We are not open to a new perspective or a new way of thinking about something until somebody just sits down in a nice way and just says, hey, have you ever thought about this? And that’s what I like about, I think, what you guys are doing is, hey, we may not agree on everything with the outdoor world a little bit, but, man, can’t we just sit down and discuss some things and see – You know, we can bring some education. I can learn something from you. You learn something from me. And let’s just see what’s best, you know, for conservation, for the wildlife here in the state. I mean, it’s not that hard, but it’s hard to get people to sit down and do that, isn’t it?
SPEAKER 13 :
Yeah. And again, that’s why we engage, you know, professionals in how best to do that and how best to engage with conservation. folks who you know for them hunting and fishing is the furthest thing from their mind they may not know anybody in their family who does it they may not have friends who do it and so we need help in how to message to these individuals and our you know fellow coloradans at the same time we’re trying to increase our engagement with Those that are already hunting and fishing. And, you know, they know the personal benefits of it, but they may not understand the broad framework that’s kind of behind the scenes that stems from hunting and fishing activities. How we fund, you know, a majority, the lion’s share of wildlife activities within CPW and wildlife. a major portion of CPW in itself, just hunting and fishing license fees. So that’s important for outdoorsmen to know, even if they’ve been doing this for years. We’re not going to take it for granted that they understand. you know, what’s behind the curtain. So our job is to kind of peel that back and explain, you know, the importance of your license fees, the importance of being a good steward of the outdoors, a good conservationist and a good representative of our community to those who may not be familiar with it. All right.
SPEAKER 04 :
And, you know, science-based wildlife management is something that we say a lot, but that’s really true, and that’s what we all want. And, you know, I think back when Prop 127, and I think something that, you know, we were able to accomplish with that is getting to those people that didn’t necessarily hunt and just kind of explaining what that would mean if, you know, no more mountain lions were taken and letting them understand, too, that, hey – There’s a cap on it. Most people didn’t know that you can eat a mountain lion. And to be honest, I didn’t for years until I harvested one. And you look at the devastation that they can do on deer population and different things. And I tell people, we just want to manage things where we have healthy populations, 960 species of wild.
SPEAKER 13 :
i’ve asked a million people that right how many you think we got you know yeah 12 18 you know nobody knows but it’s a lot to deal with and sporting licenses pays for the management of all those species we don’t just you know buy licenses and they help manage the deer population or the elk population right you know they’re um managing all non-game species and you’ll see in in the council’s materials, we highlight that a lot. You know, whether it’s river otters or burrowing owls or things like that, you might not think about. Right. Those are sporting dollars that go to support the management and the conservation of those species. So, yeah, education is key. And that’s why this is a fun volunteer opportunity for me, because like you said, I think there’s people that make uh, decisions based upon maybe ignorance or values or emotion that haven’t really been informed. And a lot of times if you just, uh, pull back the curtain and explain the whole structure of the North American model of wildlife conservation, they, they get it. And, um, at the same time, those that usually start to hunt, um, you know, I’ve never heard about anybody who started hunting and didn’t like it.
SPEAKER 04 :
And I’ve known a lot of people who said, well, I’ll go this once, but I’ll never do it again. And then like you say, yeah. And whether it’s fishing, hunting or whatever, they end up loving it.
SPEAKER 13 :
Yeah. The more, the more information they have, even if they say, you know, this isn’t for me, they’re going to understand the structure behind it, the game management structure. They’re going to respect those individuals that do. Um, choose to hunt and fish, and that’s why education is a key platform for us.
SPEAKER 04 :
Right, and I think once we do that, that’s automatically going to help when everybody has the right knowledge and not just reading things on social media, and that’s why I’m so excited about this, so we can really get the facts out there about what you have. Colorado Wildlife Council does for us here in the outdoors in Colorado, that we can sit down and have conversations and have them better, you know. And, man, that’s going to be a win-win for us at that point.
SPEAKER 13 :
You know, and one of our goals is that hunters and anglers would be equipped to have these conversations with their coworkers, with their family, extended family, friends and neighbors, and just to better explain not just their own experience in the outdoors, but how they contribute
SPEAKER 04 :
um as outdoorsmen to the overall uh structure right of wildlife management in colorado yeah so absolutely that’s a goal of ours for sure well hey man i appreciate your time i just wanted to do a little introduction for us today again folks you guys are going to be hearing way more about this and uh we’re going to be doing some things hey we’ve got our mile high hunting fish expo coming up march 20th through the 22nd and uh all the way up to the end and past we will be talking about the colorado wildlife council now If you’ve got questions, maybe you’re listening to the show in an environment you can’t call in, send me a text. If you’ve got questions that you would like to know, for me to ask one of the members here of the Colorado Wildlife Council, shoot me a text, 720-201-8585. Again, 720-201-8585. We want to get answers. We want to get education. And again, what Brian just said it perfectly. Hey, where we can all know what’s going on, be able to sit down, have decent, civil, respectful conversations with people, not to try to win them to the last thought. I just now thought of Brian, but not to try to win them to your. the way of thinking but just maybe let them know why you think the way you do and i’m going to respect the way that you think the way you think i mean it’s not that hard right right it happens it happens when you have those conversations yeah absolutely well man we appreciate your time
SPEAKER 13 :
Yeah, and before I get off, I’ll just say if you want some more information, feel free to visit our website. It’s cowildlifecouncil.org. And as they say, drop a follow. We’ve got Instagram, Facebook accounts where you’ll see some of our campaign messaging. And feel free to engage there or reach out directly to us.
SPEAKER 04 :
Absolutely. Again, that is CO… wildlife, or cowildlifecouncil.org, and really follow all the things they do on Instagram and Facebook. It is excellent. Next time you buy a license, you see that $1.50. Now you know that’s going to a wonderful, wonderful cause to help us all here in our great state in the outdoors here in Colorado. You’re listening to Sportsman of Colorado. We’ve got to take a quick break, and we’ll be back with more right after this.

SPEAKER 04 :
Welcome back to Sportsman of Colorado. We appreciate you being with us today. We’re going to bring you now several interviews that we did this last week at the International Sportsman’s Expo. It was in town at the Denver Convention Center. And, man, we had a great show. I want to say we appreciate it. all the guests that came by our booth that we were able to interview, as well as folks that just stopped by that said they listened to the show and KLZ 560, and we appreciate our loyal listeners. So you’re going to hear a lot in the background. It was really loud there, but we’re going to bring you now several interviews from the 2026 International Sportsman’s Expo. Welcome to Sportsman of Colorado. Thank you so much for joining us today. Okay, man, it’s been a fast, furious couple of weeks here, but we just wrapped up the International Sportsman’s Expo last week and couldn’t get everybody on that we wanted to, just the hour show, but so many great friends here and supporters of our show and sponsors and then people we want to help out as well, and that is including our next guest, American Heroes in Action. Now, you’ve heard Dave Proffitt on for a number of years, and we’ve been working with the Denver team for American Heroes in Action for eight, nine years, I guess, something like that. Well, now they’ve got a northern Colorado chapter and a good friend of the show and personal as well. Craig Button is joining us here. Now, we’re recording these at the International Sportsman’s Expo, so we’re not in a studio. That’s why you’re going to hear some goose calls and duck calls and elk calls and different things in the background here. But, Craig, thanks for kicking off our show today. Yes, sir.
SPEAKER 07 :
Hey, I appreciate you doing this for me.
SPEAKER 04 :
You bet. So give us a little background of yourself, you know, your military background a little bit, and then what made you get involved here with American Heroes in Action?
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, absolutely. So I spent five years in Alaska, 125th BSB up there. I was a combat cook. I did a tour to Afghanistan, 2011, 2012. From there, you know, I was deciding what I wanted to do. I was, you know, offered to… do other things so I took that route and moved down here to Colorado and Dave Prophet actually walked into a sportsman’s warehouse in Loveland, Colorado looking for disabled veterans to take out hunting and fishing when he kicked off this organization and from there the rest is history. I worked for the post office for a little bit after that though so the time was kind of off whenever he presented himself. But now, since I’ve walked away from the post office about after eight, nine years, I contacted Dave again. And we stayed in contact throughout the years. He took me on a couple pronghorn hunts and fishing trips. But now, since I’m able to give him my full attention, I’m ready to give back to him and help that NOCO chapter and get it kicked off. We have a second annual banquet coming up pretty soon, March 7, 2026. And… The first one was a huge success. We took a year off, and now we’re coming back together, though, there at the Embassy Suite to see if we can rally some more people together for the great mission of American Heroes in Action.
SPEAKER 04 :
You know, I tell people all the time, you look at life as you get into my age range and wish you would have done some things differently. I tell you, I really wish I would have done something in the military, you know, and I really, really do, and I certainly respect all those. And I tell people all the time, it doesn’t matter, man, if you had a desk job, if you saw an actual battle, whatever, you still signed on a line.
SPEAKER 07 :
Yes, sir.
SPEAKER 04 :
To serve. So, you know, and I know it’s kind of cliche to say thank you for your service. Right. But thank you for your service. Thank you. We do appreciate it.
SPEAKER 05 :
And also, you know, I mean, I look at you. You look 1,000% normal, healthy, and everything.
SPEAKER 04 :
Oh, yeah. But you know what? There’s still a lot of things. And I describe it this way, and hopefully I’m politically correct doing it this way. The things that you saw, maybe. The smells you smelled. Yeah. Visions that will never be out of your mind. Whatever. For some people. I mean, there’s a lot going on. You know? For mental health, right? And I think that’s one big thing I’ve enjoyed watching over these last eight or nine years with Dave and seeing his banquet and different things for him is getting to see some of these deals, hearing some of the stories of some of the people and what it meant. And a lot of times, you know, these are a few guys or gals going together, so they kind of automatically connect, I would think, and you tell me. Yes, yes, sir. And they get to share some of their deals. But it’s a real healing experience.
SPEAKER 07 :
time for many right the outdoor therapy behind the mission it’s real um and it’s it’s and i can testify to that i mean i was going through a rough time i was homeless when i got here to colorado as well went through a divorce and yeah and i kind of left that part out there in the you know in the beginning but um men get really disconnected and women whenever they leave the military service and they try to get back into the civilian life um it is complicated and i’ve been around the military my whole life retired first sergeant stepdad um My dad was in for eight years. He was heavy mechanic machinery for Abrams Tanks. Combat tour for him as well, Desert Storm. But it’s just, so I kind of knew around it. And the men at the time though, they were always kind of, you know, standing strong. They didn’t want to talk about their, you know, what’s going on upstairs in their head. But I’m telling you here right now, Like you said, we see a lot of things, we smell a lot of things, and those things don’t go away. And when you try to talk about it to other people, non-civilian, it’s really hard to relate. So the outdoor therapy, and then, like you said, just automatically connecting with like-minded individuals that Dave brings together through his organization, it’s… It’s too easy to talk about. It really is too easy to talk about.
SPEAKER 04 :
Right, right. Once again, it’s American Heroes in Action. This is the Northern Colorado chapter. We’ll be having our Denver banquet here a little later. We’ll tell you more about that. We want you there, all right, and we need your help in supporting this. It’s in Loveland, right? Yes, sir. At the Embassy Suites there. And, hey, it’ll be a great meal. We’ll have silent auction, live auction. Our good buddy Bryce Elliman, which we work a lot of banquets with, the best auctioneer in the business in my professional opinion. No, he’s awesome, yeah. He is good. And Bryce will be there, and we’re going to have a great time March the 7th. Not trying to get too many details here, but doors open probably, what, 4? About 4.30. About 4.30?
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, 4.30, and we’ll wrap things up about 9, 9.30 that night. Again, like you said, silent auction, live auction, general raffle. Just a great time. A lot of like-minded people. And, like, not only do we need people in those doors, but we’re also looking for those local sponsorships as well, those partnerships.
SPEAKER 04 :
Right. the ones that are you know in those communities so if that’s you please you know don’t hesitate and reach on out to us right so hey you’re up north you know here’s here’s what and here we really promote this at the banquet too and i try to do this as mc to let them know hey if you see businesses here that have given a gift card they’ve given product they’ve given something like that Let’s support that business as well, okay? So if you’re a business up north here, northern Colorado, and you would like to help, how’s the best way for them to get in touch with you?
SPEAKER 07 :
Yeah, best way, phone number 970-342-4926 or email craigb at americanheroesinaction.org.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 07 :
If I don’t respond to you right away, I promise you I will get back to you. But, yeah.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah. And if you’re driving around right now and you’re listening to this show and you’re like, hey, I can’t remember all that, get in touch with me, Scott, at Sportsman Colorado Radio, KLC, and I’ll hook you up with Craig. But seriously, and I said gift cards on purpose because, you know what, we can use some things like that in silent auctions. Absolutely. And, you know, hey, and we’ll give you some good publicity for your business as well. And I assure you. I try to stay very, very connected to businesses like this and companies like this, I should say, that do things for other people. Because I want to, and I’m just being honest with you, Craig, I want to make sure the effort is for the cause. Absolutely. And, man, I’m proud to say, hey, there’s never been a question with American Heroes in action, you know, and everybody’s all volunteers and everybody giving all they got. And I don’t know, you might even could use a volunteer or two at the bank. Oh, yes.
SPEAKER 07 :
Now that you mention that, yes, that would be fantastic. Anyone, if you want to help out, you have an extra hand, extra time, please, yes, we would love it.
SPEAKER 04 :
Sure. Because, I mean, we’ve got to set up some stuff, you know, and tear down some stuff.
SPEAKER 07 :
Oh, yeah, it’ll be a long day for sure.
SPEAKER 04 :
Setting up some merchandise, different things like that. So there’s a lot of ways you can help. And no doubt, hey, money, you know, like I say, gift cards, product. If you’re a store up there and you would like to help us, we would be very, very grateful for that. And once again, if you’re just getting a car, turn on the radio. We are recording these. at the International Sportsman’s Expo, the 2020s tradition, which closed last week. And like I say, our one-hour show is limited on the 10th, but I certainly wanted to get some folks on today. I wanted to start off with Craig because, again, this is just a great organization, and it’s American Heroes in Action. Any story or two come to mind over the last year or so of your chapter that a guy or gal has been out on an excursion of some sort and just maybe share a little bit of their story of what it meant for them?
SPEAKER 07 :
Well, to be up front, not really, just because we are new in a brand-new chapter up there in northern Colorado.
SPEAKER 04 :
So most of the event has been going through Dave at this point?
SPEAKER 07 :
Yes, absolutely. But we did just do a – A pheasant hunt up there up in, I think it was Nunn, Colorado that we did. So that was really fantastic. I was actually a part of that one. Got to meet a lot of new people and stuff. So yeah, but we are, again, brand new up there. Please, if you are a veteran, apply. Go onto our website. Apply as an applicant. And once we get adventures and stuff together, we’ll reach out to you up there in NOCO.
SPEAKER 04 :
Okay, good. Now, how do they get tickets?
SPEAKER 07 :
Tickets, yeah. You can go on through our website, AmericanHeroesInAction.org. There will be a little link up there that says Banquet. Down underneath that Banquet will be, say, NOCO. Just go ahead and hit on that guy there. In other ways, our QR codes, you can see our posters, flyers, hanging around town, stuff like that. You can just scan that QR code as well, and it will take you directly to that website link.
SPEAKER 04 :
okay great now if you can help out you can reach craig at 970-342-4926 and also you can email him at craig b at americanheroesinaction.org and uh and once again great organization actually changing lives for folks that have served our country. And this is a small way we can pay them back, have a nice banquet, raise some money for them, send them out on some nice excursions to just let them know how much we appreciate them and their service here for our country. And once again. Get a hold of Craig. He can help you. We’ll have a few more interviews with Craig as we get closer. But get your tickets now, all right? And, again, if you’re driving, you can’t remember any of this, get in touch with me at the station here, and we’ll get you all hooked up. So, Craig, we appreciate your time, and always good to see you, and I appreciate the honor of getting to see your banquet. Scott, you as well, man. I appreciate your time. handshake on radio nobody can see but hey it just comes natural sometimes man all right all right bud appreciate it yeah you take care you’re listening to sports from colorado we’ll take a quick break be back with more right after this here’s your water talk minute with paul the water man brought to you by water pros so one of the things that we’ve learned and you can check this out factually information for yourself by going to the epa.gov
SPEAKER 01 :
The EPA has a laundry list of unregulated contaminants, and what that means, folks, is that your municipality does not have to test for these contaminants, and so they’re not reported in your annually water quality report. This is something that has to change. We have a false sense of security about the quality of our drinking water, from pharmaceuticals to the levels of PFAS and Gen X chemicals, which was recently removed from the EPA contamination list. And for example, there’s a contaminant on the unregulated list called 1,4-Dioxin. 1,4-Dioxin has been in our water supply since the early 1900s. For over 10 years, hunters have relied on OnX maps to help navigate public and private land boundaries across the country. OnX Hunt is the only tool comprised of more than 400 countrywide maps that give clear private and public land boundaries, trails, hunting-specific data, and more. New map layers are constantly being added by pairing with some of the leading names in conservation and the outdoor industry, like the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Boone and Crockett Club, and Eastman’s. Whether it’s on your smartphone or handheld GPS, make the most of your precious time in the field by navigating with Onyx Hunt. Go to the App Store or onyxmaps.com. 560-KLZ, your home station. Welcome back to sports from Colorado. As we mentioned in our first segment, we recently wrapped up the 2026 edition of the International Sportsman’s Expo. A great time for all. Hey, we saw a lot of our old friends. Of course, a lot of our sponsors are here. And actually, a gentleman I met a year ago this last year and got to play in a golf tournament with some great friends of ours from Colorado. I have another station-type podcast. That’s KB… K4CO Radio. K4CO Radio, yeah. And Josh… They were just such great people over there. And I watched some of their podcasts, actually, and had seen Harold on before. And I said, man, I should talk to him because he could fit in great with sportsmen of Colorado. And it’s the hitch corner. Hey, Kevin, we all need a hitch.
SPEAKER 05 :
Absolutely. Can’t live life without a hitch.
SPEAKER 06 :
You cannot.
SPEAKER 04 :
You cannot. And so their store is located at 10677 West Centennial Road in Littleton. The number is 303-904-1558. So for the first time, Harold Kiefer, president of Hitch Corner. Welcome. Welcome, sir. Welcome. Thanks for having me. So this is your first International Sportsman’s Expo, or have you done this before?
SPEAKER 12 :
First time in probably 10 years. We used to do it a lot, and it was just, and then we started having the January RV show. It was at the exact same time, so it was just a conflict, and so we figured that was a better run for us, and now that’s gone. So we figured to give it a shot this year and see how it goes.
SPEAKER 06 :
Awesome.
SPEAKER 12 :
So tell us a little about your background.
SPEAKER 04 :
I mean, you’re a smart guy. Hey, you know, five hours of golf. I’m like, that guy could have done anything he wanted to. So what made you pick pitches?
SPEAKER 12 :
Yes, it’s our 35th year business. So I fell into it. My dad was in the hitch business. We’re all probably the same age. So he was in the, you know, from 60s, late 60s to 1980.
SPEAKER 03 :
I’m 29. 29, okay. I apologize. He was being very kind to me.
SPEAKER 12 :
But in 1980, the oil embargo hit, and nobody was traveling. So he pretty much crashed and burned. He went to U-Haul, became their main hitch mechanic. And then in 1990, just as I was graduating from college, he said it was time to start up again. So I was kind of a silent partner at the time. I was doing some stuff with Lucid Technologies. We were a third-party software developer for them. and then caught the same story in 95 we were helping with their showcase out at lucent and their stock went through the floor they were on the hook with the community college of colorado for 10 million bucks and they went to them and said how did we get this contract and they said leave all your stuff and just leave so we crashed and burned on the spot i was full time at the hitch quarter in 1995 and just ran with it ever since at that point that’s so cool so
SPEAKER 06 :
So what sort of customers are you looking for? What are the people that you can really help out?
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah, absolutely. Well, obviously, just, you know, anyone that tows, obviously. So whether it’s an RV, a boat, a motorcycle, jet ski, 65% of our business is hitches just for people with bike racks.
SPEAKER 04 :
I was just going to say e-bikes. Keep your train of thought. We have a sponsor, e-bike of Colorado out of Louisville. Yes. And every time he’s on the show, I’m like, man, where do people go to get the rest of the stuff to carry them? Kevin has e-bikes, right? Yeah, I’ve got two of them.
SPEAKER 12 :
And a regular bike rack doesn’t really work. Correct. You have to have one that’s specific to it. Generally one that has a ramp to help you get them up because they’re so darn heavy as well. Exactly. And then the other ones is we do a full line of truck accessories. So that’s why Scott and I were starting to talk is hunters for sure. But anyone that’s outfitting their vehicles, other than a lift kit, we do everything. tonneau covers truck racks step bars grills bumpers lighting um all the fun stuff right nice and then on the heavy duty side guys with gooseneck you know gooseneck trailers fifth wheel trailers um we try you know we brag we try to be the one-stop shop because we also do a full line of rv accessories that we sell so we we believe if you have a vehicle we believe we can help you and break braking systems and that sort of thing. Brake controls, absolutely. We have it really cool. I’ve got it on our table. In fact, here is just a very simple, it’s a wireless brake control. We don’t have to mount anything inside the cab anymore. It’s a game changer. That’s crazy. Yes, it’s awesome.
SPEAKER 04 :
We kind of think of it, or our wives probably think of it as toys with stuff. But when you’re out, you need that light in the back of the truck. You need that, right? You need certain things.
SPEAKER 06 :
Well, and you know this, I don’t have to tell you this, but you also need somebody to tell you what you need relating to carrying capacity.
SPEAKER 12 :
Well, I’m a big fan of, I tell everyone, I believe I’m an educator because I get a lot of guys that come to me and say, I want to do this with this truck. And I’m like, no, you’re not. Because that truck can’t handle it.
SPEAKER 04 :
I mean, I’ll do it.
SPEAKER 12 :
But you’re going to get out of here, you’re going to come back to me and say this thing can’t do it.
SPEAKER 04 :
So now you just waste a ton of money. So absolutely. That was exactly where I was going to next. For years, I was in the furniture business. The last aid I spent with Jake Jabs at American Furniture, and I was his sales manager. We had to come up with all this documentation for people picking up furniture. If you want to laugh, get your wife, get some popcorn to go, pull up to the loading dock, and watch what people come in to pick up a king-size mattress.
SPEAKER 05 :
I mean, they lay it over the top, they got the court, and the guy’s got his hand. I mean, dude, we’re…
SPEAKER 04 :
they come in cars time dressers are on it you know and so exactly we don’t let them do that but that was my next question is do you see people that kind of get ahead of themselves like buy something and then they don’t have the vehicles one of our the one i see the the most the best example i’ll give you is they’ll come here they’ll buy a fifth wheel trailer yeah
SPEAKER 12 :
Then they come to me with a 150 crew cab, which is a five and a half foot bed. I’m like, I can make this work. It’s going to cost you $4,000. Yeah. And you don’t have the truck to do it anyway. Right. Right. And so it’s like putting the cart before the horse a lot of the time. Yeah. And unfortunately, I can’t say hard things on the dealers, but they don’t care. They’re like, I’m selling you a fifth wheel. I don’t care what you’re towing it with.
SPEAKER 09 :
Right. I’m selling you a fifth wheel.
SPEAKER 12 :
Right. Done. So we definitely get that. We get a lot of guys that have a small SUV and they want to pull a 9,000 pound trailer.
SPEAKER 06 :
Right. Can’t do it. It’s not going to happen.
SPEAKER 12 :
Right.
SPEAKER 06 :
Well, and I bet you see it now because there’s a bunch of trends relating to the pickup truck camper sort of thing as well because they want to pull a boat or whatever, and they don’t have the capacity of their… Absolutely. Absolutely. So for those guys that are out there, how can they come to you and get educated? Absolutely.
SPEAKER 12 :
They can always call us or text us at 303-904-1558. Or they can also always go on our website and request a quote. Our website is easy. It’s hitchcorner.com. But they can just tell us what they have, what you’re looking for. We get back to them. I generally get back to them that day. You’re always talking to a person. I don’t have a bot or anything. And I want to make sure we’re actually chatting and getting you the right answers. So that’s cool.
SPEAKER 04 :
You know, I’ve always wanted to get, like, that ranch-type grill. Yeah. And a couple of lights and stuff. Are those pretty, the lights that you see? Because sometimes you pull out in a field or something, and, you know, you want to light it up a little bit.
SPEAKER 12 :
Right. No, absolutely. You know, most of those, most of the grill guards, it’s a grand chance probably our most popular, but they’re not going to come with the lights. We have to add those lights. But they’re generally designed to have them. Right. Yeah, depending on these new LED lights and everything, you’re going to light up whatever you want to light up.
SPEAKER 04 :
That is for sure. And I think the best way to do it is come in and tell you, hey, what are you looking for? I’m going to be the salesman now if I’m telling you. What are you looking for? What are you trying to accomplish? Don’t get hooked up because I’ve heard ranch hand. I’ve heard that all my life. Right. It may not be a ranch hand, but, you know, we’ve got another grill. that’s comfortable with the other stuff that would make you a better deal on it.
SPEAKER 12 :
Oh, yeah. So, for instance, there’s 4×4. There’s ARB. There’s Iron Arm or something. There’s like a multitude of companies. So I tell people, just like you said, tell me what you’re looking for. Have you seen something you like? Let me look through my distributors and see if we can get it. If you come in, I’m not going to say I’ll let you ranch in. That’s for sure. I’m just saying that’s one of the more popular ones. But, yeah, we want to get what you like.
SPEAKER 04 :
That’s for sure. Yeah. Once again, it is the Hitch Corner, 10677 West Centennial Road, Littleton, 303-904-1558. And what are your hours?
SPEAKER 12 :
Monday through Friday, 8 to 5. And then in March, we have our summer hours. In March through October, we’ll be open Saturdays, 8 to noon. But we don’t do that. It’s just too quiet right now.
SPEAKER 04 :
I can’t justify being there. So when we talk about truck accessories, you don’t have to go through your whole lineup, but give us an idea of what we mean by truck accessories.
SPEAKER 12 :
Tunnel covers or bed covers, truck racks, bumpers, grills, step bars, lighting. uh storage devices in so uh cargo slides the deck system which is you know a storage compartment you can still put stuff on top of it uh any of the overlanding stuff so if you want a rooftop tent if you want the the cage to put that on we can get anything literally on that side wow that is so cool
SPEAKER 06 :
And you’re talking about the decks. There’s different manufacturers and different products.
SPEAKER 12 :
Absolutely. Different manufacturers, weight capacities. How far are they going to come out? Some can go all the way to 75%. Some can only go 50%. So again, it’s kind of figuring out what the customer wants. Price. What do you got? It’s like, I’m not going to go ballistic. And then the guy’s like, I can’t afford that. Let’s find what’s going to fit your needs best.
SPEAKER 06 :
I think what’s interesting, too, is you can get online and go do a Google search, and then you get all of these different providers all over the internet. The nice thing about you is you can come in, talk to a human being, and really talk about what it is that you’re looking for. Absolutely.
SPEAKER 12 :
And I don’t discourage that. Other than to find what you like.
SPEAKER 06 :
Research.
SPEAKER 12 :
Exactly right. Because people come in and say, what do you have for step bars? Well, I could be here all day. So I try to encourage that for sure. And then hopefully, you know, they’ll come back. The Internet’s a tough beast, right? It’s just, you know, everyone wants to do it yourself.
SPEAKER 06 :
Sure. Absolutely. But at the same time, they’re going to get some really good advice from you that they won’t get.
SPEAKER 12 :
There’s no doubt. There’s no doubt. And I tell everyone, if I don’t have the answer, I will find you the answer.
SPEAKER 04 :
Are there garbage hitches out there? In other words, what drives me crazy is when people go, you know, when they’re price shopping. And I’m all for price, too. But, man, you know, I hate to see people get taken. Right. I guess my question may be easier to ask. Is a hitch a hitch?
SPEAKER 12 :
A hitch is a hitch except for there’s universal mounts out there. So you can find a universal hitch they say will fit. I’ll go back to the older Fords and Dodges, right? This hitch will fit every Chevy, Dodge, and Ford truck. You have to play a lot of games to get it on, blah, blah, blah. So the answer is yes from that perspective. I don’t think there’s a bad manufacturer out there. But what I sell is every hitch I put on is designed specifically for that vehicle. And in 95% of the time, there’s zero drilling because it’s using all the factory holes that the factory has established as strength points. So it’s going to look good, look correct, and it’s designed for the hitch. But from a manufacturer point, I’m not going to say one manufacturer is better than the other. There’s some with, like, Kurt and Echo Hitch. The finish on it, though, they’re not going to rust like a lot of these other ones are rusting out there, but everyone’s catching up. Everyone’s getting on board because they know that’s the one drawback.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, so, you know, the last couple of minutes, but I had the hard tonal covers for years. Lately went to the folding type, and I have to say… It’s a grain changer, right? It’s a grain changer. The lid type would only go up so far. Right. Now, it helped me when buddies wanted me to help them move.
SPEAKER 05 :
Well, I can’t. Does yours come off? No. Mine’s the type that doesn’t come off.
SPEAKER 04 :
But that folding deal, man, has been super.
SPEAKER 12 :
It’s great. I haven’t seen yours, but we’ve got one that retracts into a canister. Oh, yeah. I’ve got buddies that got that. We have one that literally… folds to a final third, but two wing nuts take it off, and the whole thing comes off in three minutes, put it back on in three minutes. So if you need to put that couch in your bed. Yeah, that’s why I tell them I don’t have that. But, yeah, so they’re awesome. And there’s, again, a ton of options, right?
SPEAKER 04 :
What’s your booth number? Not to put you on the spot. We are 1-0-38.
SPEAKER 12 :
1-0-38. We’re 4-28.
SPEAKER 04 :
and we’re here giving 25 gift certificates to the hitch corners so if you get out here stop by our booth all right come by hey see harold come by our booth we’ll take you over and introduce you personally hey family-owned deal this is this this is who we need to support all right and i love this your one-stop shop for vehicle and rv add-ons they’ve got rvs here like i say the e-bike thing has grown all of us got all these different trailers and boats and different things Hey, you’ve done all that right, but you know what? To haul it right, you need a professional to help you make sure you get to your destination safely. And, man, we could do a whole show just on checking out trailers and pitches and stuff before you hit the road, some safety things. Yeah, absolutely. Hopefully we’re going to do some things in the future with Harold, but, hey, I wanted to get him on the show. Hitchcorner.com, 10677 West Centennial Road. In Littleton, 303-904-1558. And if you come by, be sure and let him know you heard him here on Sportsman of Colorado, and we’d appreciate that as well. So, Harold, thanks for taking a few minutes. Thank you, guys. Look forward to doing this again, maybe. Absolutely. You’re listening to Sportsman of Colorado. We’ve got to take a quick break, and we’ll be back with more right after this.
SPEAKER 09 :

SPEAKER 11 :
This is 560 KLZ, your home station.
SPEAKER 04 :
We are back now. We could not fit in all of our interviews at the recent 2026 International Sportsman’s Expo. But a person you hear every month on our show, Kyle Wiley. He is here and LT Arms at 8130 Schaefer Parkway. Almost waited too long, but they got a booth and got a good location. And hey, here’s the deal. See, blessings come when you wait. Sometimes they had a 10 by 20 booth and someone didn’t show up. So they got a 10 by 20 booth. So that works right, Kyle?
SPEAKER 15 :
Yep, it definitely did work out in our favor on that one.
SPEAKER 04 :
Cool, man. Well, hey, it’s great to have you here. I tell you, I’ve walked around the showroom a number of times over the last few days, and man, you guys have always had people back there. You got something kind of fun going on back there, getting people to see how much ammo is in a jar or casings are in a jug back there. How’s that been going?
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, that’s been going pretty good. I mean, you know, when you come to a trade show, you’re always hoping to get a deal or something like that. So we figured we’d do something fun and make people guess how much brass is in a jug and just go through. And everyone put in guesses and all that. But the kids actually, you know, were the best ones at it. You know, they thought of them like jelly beans.
SPEAKER 04 :
Really? Well, I tell you, you know, and we say this every month, you know, you’re on the show and everything. But, man, just congrats for your so many things. And just from an outsider looking in, kind of being from a sales background, a managing background, and people, and knowing how vital it is to have a great staff, man, A-plus for you, you know, because really, I mean, You know, when you’re around and you’re not there, you know, you always feel like, gosh, do I have some eyes in the building to let me know? And I can tell you, man, every person that I’ve come in contact with at LT Arms has just been amazing. Not just a person, but employee. I can tell they care about the business. I always tell owners, you’re never going to get somebody to care about as much as you do until I met LT Arms staff. I mean, I really do. I believe those folks care for you. I think they care for your business. I think they look out for you and treat customers in such a way where people want to come back, man.
SPEAKER 15 :
Oh, yeah, definitely. And that’s the biggest thing is we don’t want the typical gun shop vibe. And so we try to have a nice, friendly, inviting environment. And everyone has their passions and all that. And as long as they’re passionate about something, they’re willing to give it their all.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, absolutely. Now, what is your booth number? You remember?
SPEAKER 15 :
I do not remember.
SPEAKER 04 :
I tell you what, come to 428 and don’t worry. I asked 10 guys and nobody knew. 428 is our booth. And if you will come over here, I will walk you over to LT Arms booth. And you know, not just a gun store by any means. I mean, everything but that. But you have full when we talk about full service gunsmithing. I don’t think I’m leaving out there. Full service means full service with your guys.
SPEAKER 15 :
Oh yeah, yeah, there’s I mean, We’ve been telling everyone at this show that as far anything from complete restoration to complete custom build to, you know, just putting sights on a gun for you. We’ll do it all.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah. And again, great crew back there with Parker and his crew. Oh, yeah. Does a great job. And then the guys you hear a lot on the show with Kyle, Brandon and Evan, and they do a terrific job as well. And you may remember a recent story a few months ago. I got a new Seekin 7PRC, and, man, just took it over, and I said, look, guys, I’m just being honest. I don’t know what all I need to know how to make this thing shoot the best. You do. So figure it out. And they did. And, man, shot a really nice mule deer. And, I mean, that sucker was dialed in. And the loads that Evan did for me just worked perfectly.
SPEAKER 01 :
And so…
SPEAKER 04 :
It’s great to have knowledge in stores. You’ve been to stores. You’ve asked people questions, and they’re reading the tags or reading the box. Like, well, dude, I can read. I want you to know. And not that people need to know everything, but, man, it’s nice just to know whatever Evan or Brandon or you trust. Man, I’m trusting because you guys know it. And you’re in the field as well. You hunt fish, you do all the things.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, and that’s the biggest thing is, you know, you can buy something and whatnot from anyone, but having someone that’s actually used the product and experienced it, I mean, I’ll tell people all the time that my wife’s a better shot than I am, but the fact that both me and her go out and use what we’re selling, that’s the biggest thing is, you know, we have personal hands-on experience with almost everything in our shop.
SPEAKER 04 :
Again, Kyle Willey is with us, and it is LT Arms, 8130 Schaefer Parkway. And it’s kind of a little industrial district. How do you explain? Because it can get confusing in that little district there.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, so as far as the find us, the biggest thing is it’s the King Carroll Business Park area.
SPEAKER 03 :
Okay.
SPEAKER 15 :
And almost everyone knows where the Sonic is off of King Carroll and 470. Oh, yeah, the landmark, Sonic.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 15 :
So, yeah, we’re just down the road from that. You head south on Schaefer Parkway, and you’re looking for the big elk on the window.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, absolutely. And a lot of classes. They do reloading classes. They do some concealed carry type classes. They have a ton going on. I don’t want to take too much of Kyle’s time here to go through a lot of things, but I will tell you, it is a great store and not just your everyday type gun store. You know, they get into it. Maybe somebody recently passed away or just decided, hey, I’ve got some guns I’m not going to use anymore. You want to turn those into cash? They can help you with that. And whether it be a consignment or purchase, whatever the case may be, is consignment generally the way you like to go?
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, consignment is usually the way we want to go because if… That motivates us to get the most money for the individual. And so it’s the best bet all around for everyone. As far as just buying guns outright, we’re more than happy to do that. But the hard part with that is we can’t guarantee anything as far as what the value is right and so we’re usually gonna you know favor on the cheaper side of the firearm and so as far as consignment if someone wants to try and get top dollar that’s the best route to go yeah absolutely because and you know folks you got to be fair-minded you may think you have you know some
SPEAKER 04 :
Gun that was left on the Custer’s battlefield or something. And, hey, but here are some cool things. I’m sure you’ve had some people walk in. Hey, I don’t know what this is worth.
SPEAKER 15 :
And it’s a really nice gun. Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER 04 :
Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, that’s, I mean, some people, you know, hey, I found this gun in my dad’s attic. I have no clue what it is. And it’s a gun that was, you know, refinished by a very famous person.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 15 :
And so that’s, you won’t know that until you come in and, you know, have them give you the expertise on it.
SPEAKER 03 :
Right, right. So.
SPEAKER 04 :
So have you found a lot, some people that knew of your store or a lot of people that had? I mean, and trust me, I say the same thing. People, I go, I’ve never heard of you. I’m like, well, that’s great.
SPEAKER 05 :
I’ve been here 13 years.
SPEAKER 04 :
But that’s what this is about, letting people know you’re here.
SPEAKER 15 :
Yeah, definitely. Getting the recognition out there and everything, that’s the biggest thing, is because most people haven’t been around here and haven’t, you know, We’ve been around for almost 10 years now. And the industry still has no clue that we exist. And so getting the name recognition and the contacts is very beneficial at this show. So that’s the big thing about coming here.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah, cool. Well, man, I tell you this every month, I mean it. It is an absolute pleasure to do business with you guys. And I hope we do this for many, many, many years. And it is a lot of fun. You guys have treated me great. Hey, last thing, if you need a custom cowboy hat, LT Arms can help you out. Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER 15 :
Man, you made me a nice one. Take a minute and tell us about that. Yeah, definitely. So, yeah, we figured we wanted to be a one-stop shop for everything hunting. And, you know, you need a good hat when you’re out hunting because the sun’s beating down on you. You know, I have a hairline from the 60s, and so it’s nice to not have a sunburnt head. But, yeah, so we offer custom cowboy hats. shaping, the fitting, the whatever, you know, cowboy hat, fedora, anything, any type of felt hat you want, we can make it.
SPEAKER 04 :
Right. Now, if you’re wondering, and I can’t remember, I’ve done so many interviews, if I announce this, we are at the 2026 International Sportsman’s Expo. We couldn’t get everybody on during our hour show on Saturday. You’ve heard some replays on Sundays, of course, 8 in the morning, 8 at 9, and the following Thursday from 9 to 10 in the morning we replay Saturday. So you’re going to hear a lot about the ISC, and we just couldn’t get everybody on, but certainly wanted to get one of our own on the show, and it is LT Arms. When you go by, let them know you heard Kyle here on the show, and let them know Sportsman of Colorado sent you. So, Kyle, we appreciate it, and thanks again for everything. And while folks can’t see it, I’ll shake your hand and just tell you thank you, buddy. Thank you, sir. You’re listening to Sportsman of Colorado. We’ve got to take a quick break, and we’ll be back with more right after this. Thanks for being with us today, four sportsmen of Colorado. Hope you enjoyed those interviews. We’ve got a couple more we’re going to be playing next week. Just a reminder now, we’ve got the Mile High Hunting Fish Expo. That is coming up March 20th through the 22nd. We’ll be giving you a promo code next week to save you a little bit on your ticket purchases there. We hope to see you. It is going to be at the new… facility there at the National Western Stock Show area, and we’ll be giving you more information about that on next week’s show. But thanks for being with us. Hope you have a great rest of your day. Leave it right here on KLZ 560.
