Step into the Outdoorsman’s Attic and uncover a treasure trove of outdoor gear with owner Billy Paddock. From the humble beginnings with his and his father’s collection, Billy has built Colorado’s largest consignment store for hunting, fishing, and camping gear. In this episode, we explore the journey of Outdoor’s Attic, how it fosters a unique community around the spirit of adventure, and the personal stories from satisfied customers who found their perfect gear match.
SPEAKER 07 :
Welcome to Sportsman of Colorado, Colorado’s premier outdoor radio show heard every Saturday afternoon on KLZ 560 with insights on hunting, fishing, archery, guns, and ammo from Colorado’s top outfitters featuring the industry’s leading experts on how to enhance your experience in the great outdoors. Now, here’s your host, Scott Watley.
SPEAKER 03 :
Welcome to Sportsman Colorado. Thank you so much for being with us today. Hey, we’ve got a great show in store for you. We’re going to kick it off with our good buddy Billy Paddock. It’s the Outdoorsman’s Attic. Absolutely one of my favorite stores to visit. Usually several times a week because you never know what you’re going to find there. It is absolutely Colorado’s largest consignment store for the outdoors. And when we say outdoors now… We’ve got really three main categories. We’ve got hunting, fishing, and camping. And, again, you’ll find some pre-owned items, some used items, we’ll say. And, hey, sometimes you’ll find some things that have never been used or gently used as well. But it’s always good quality no matter what you’re looking at. And with that, we’ll welcome the man who had the dream and started it all years ago, Billy Paddock. What’s going on, bud?
SPEAKER 12 :
Yep, absolutely. You have dreams or nightmares, too.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 12 :
It’s a good nightmare. It’s been quite a long time. I think it’s, shoot, it might be even, what, I think 16 years now that I started it.
SPEAKER 03 :
Wow, it just fixed nasty. So 2026, what does that bring you to? So, wow, that’s crazy. When you look at those first few, remembering back those first few weeks and months, six months, eight months, I mean. what kind of things were you getting and what were people their reaction because there’s nothing like this man i’ve never i mean even traveling around and going in different i’ve never seen a consignment store for stuff like this so i mean what was it like it’s it’s crazy you know it started off with my dad’s stuff and my stuff um you know and yeah i that that’s how i did it i’m like i need to sell all my stuff so maybe start a store you know because
SPEAKER 12 :
Back then, Craigslist was big, and then the clothing consignment stores were kind of just getting going. And I’m like, well, there’s got to be a place for guys that like stuff like me, hunting and fishing and camping. And it kind of took off. We were in a tiny little spot, and it quickly got filled up. And then I moved to this other location. We’ve been here for, gosh, I don’t know, 10 years now. And now that thing’s getting too small and it’s getting narrow in here.
SPEAKER 03 :
I know. Yesterday when I was walking around, I was like, wow.
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah, yeah. But, I mean, it’s great, you know, seeing all the stuff that comes in and actually, you know, having guys come back with stories of their hunting and fishing using stuff that they bought, you know, fairly inexpensive and got to go and experience something that they otherwise were going to get priced out. You know, especially like fly fishing, which is hot and I just spent a couple minutes with a guy today talking about how he just bought a rod and reel from me over the summer, and he used it the entire summer, and he got hooked on it. Now he’s looking to upgrade, and so he’s going to bring his stuff in. Get rid of that and upgrade to something new. And that’s kind of how the game’s played.
SPEAKER 03 :
Wow, that’s so cool. And you know what, too? It’s just so neat because, I mean, you guys were like this when you were down on Broadway, you know, and your mom and dad were there, too. But, I mean, it’s just the relationships, really, that you build there with customers because, I mean, rarely – I mean, we get new people that come in, but I would probably say 80% of the time you hear the bell on the door, you look up and call somebody by name. And you know what? That’s rare in today’s world.
SPEAKER 12 :
Well, I definitely try. You know, I treat everybody that comes into my shop as a friend, you know, because ultimately that’s my moneymaker is I make all these relationships with friends. You know, yes, the shop does, you know, bring in a profit, but I really enjoy talking with people and finding and getting to know them. And, you know, because I’m stuck behind the counter, I kind of live through these guys and gals that, you know, are going fishing, going camping, going hunting. And so I get to kind of experience their trip, you know, And I’m like, oh, yeah, I remember when I could do that. But it’s not here at the shop. And so I get kind of jealous, too.
SPEAKER 03 :
Right, right, right. Oh, man, that’s great. Again, Billy Paddock is with us. It’s 2650 West Hamden is the address. And, again, it’s called the Outdoorsman’s Attic. And, hey, great place to certainly buy some things you need, but also a great place to take some things. Like Billy just said, hey, when they started out, some things you’re not using anymore in these three areas along the lines of hunting, camping, and fishing. And so, Billy, let’s take the consignment side of it first where people want to bring things to you. It’s been a while since we’ve kind of just told people how that process works and kind of what you’re looking for. So let’s start there.
SPEAKER 12 :
Right, yeah. So we’re pretty easygoing here. So what we do is we try to get people to bring their stuff in. We set up an account for them and everything, and we go from there. It’s not rocket science. I try to make it as easy as possible for people. It doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s kind of an old-school handshake and a smile kind of thing.
SPEAKER 08 :
Right.
SPEAKER 12 :
got to judge what people are looking to get out of their item you know guys we have to be realistic it is still a used item you know you can’t we don’t want museum pieces in here but um for a lot of people it works out really well you know because a lot of guys you know they they buy something thinking that you know this is what i’m going to start doing i really enjoy it and quickly realize that maybe i’m not going to do this after all and so then it sits in the closet and it sits there and it sits there and it sits there and people are like what am i going to do with this stuff That’s where I come in. Let’s get it out of your closet, get you some more money to get back into something that you do want. But more importantly, get in front of somebody that says, yep, that’s the thing for me. I’m going to go and try that out.
SPEAKER 03 :
Sure. And so, I tell you what, we’ll start at the basement. We normally start upstairs, but there is some parking around back where we hide Scott the gunsmith. And Scott does a great job there. And that’s been a great deal now for these number of years that Scott’s been there, having him there, right?
SPEAKER 12 :
Oh, yeah. Yeah, I mean, I’ve learned so much, and he brings a wealth of knowledge that there’s no way that I could possess it. Watching him work downstairs on on old guns and stuff that, you know, I would be scared to death to touch, you know. And, you know, quick turnaround, too. It’s great. You know, and it is a very valuable thing for me. You know, and he does a great job down there.
SPEAKER 03 :
Sure, yeah, he’s been doing it a long time. All right, we got some live bait down there as well.
SPEAKER 12 :
Yep, yep, the whole fishing department’s down there. I got all the tents and sleeping bags that anybody would ever want. I know it’s kind of cold right now, but spring’s going to be here before we know it. everybody’s going to have to start thinking about the big game season. So, you know, start making your wish list early, guys. Sure.
SPEAKER 03 :
And you know what? You get some good quality things down there, too, like I mentioned. I mean, some name, you know, Davis Tent certainly is one of our sponsors and all, but I’ve seen some Davis Tents down there. I’ve seen some very good Primos blinds, you know, decoys you get. I mean, it’s just –
SPEAKER 12 :
a lot of stuff you get down there it does it does it you know it’s a little overwhelming for the first timers but you know after they get that original deer in the headlight look you know off their face and everything they start digging they’re like oh my gosh look at this you know it’s it’s you know reasonably priced i can buy it and i can go and use it this is great it’s gently used and like a lot of things you know you mentioned the davis tent some of the tents that come in They might have had one season in them, and then guys are like, oh, I don’t want to do that. That’s too much work. I’m going to use an RV. Well, guys that still want to use the wall tents and everything, it’s a good way to save a buck. It’s not going to be dirt cheap, but at the same time, there’s… you know, because it is a used item, there’s a little bit of a break for you. Right. Absolutely.
SPEAKER 03 :
And then moving upstairs, of course, wow, I just start over to the pack wall. Man, just looking through there again yesterday. I mean, man, if you can’t find a pack in there that works, you’re probably don’t know what you’re looking for because, I mean, you’ve got sizes, shapes, prices, types of packs, and some really, really good deals.
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah, I mean, it starts from just, you know, like a concealed carry, you know, side bag all the way through the mystery. I’ve got like half a dozen mystery ranch packs right now, which usually guys don’t give those up. You know, they want to hold on to them, but I’ve got a bunch of them. I’ve got some QEU packs and a lot of backpacking packs, hiking packs, and then the hunting packs too. You know, again, gently used, you know, a lot of that stuff. Guys find that one pack doesn’t work for them, so they want a different pack. Well, you know, swing in. And that’s the funny thing about most of my customers, like you. You come in at least a couple of times, you know, maybe once a week, you know, maybe twice a week.
SPEAKER 03 :
Dude, I’ve got where I can find something that’s brand new that was just dropped off two days ago, you know, because I’m like, something looks out of place here. Something was added.
SPEAKER 12 :
Yep, yep. Yeah. Yeah. You know, and I mean, we’ve got all the, you know, continuing through. I mean, I’ve got a ton of clothing, you know, a lot of nice, you know, clothing. I mean, a lady just dropped off a bunch of Filson hunting clothes. Nice stuff. And, you know, I go through that stuff constantly. You know, and then, of course, we’ve got all the reloading stuff, which I’ve got quite a bit of reloading stuff, some powder and primers, which I know that stuff’s coming back now, but the dye sets and You know, you start, especially the new guys that are trying to get into reloading, you know, it can quickly get out of hand as far as how much you’re going to pay. Sure. And if the dies are in good shape, you know, there’s no sense in paying $60 for a die when I’ve got it here for $30, you know. Yeah. You know, and, you know, then, of course, we’ve got the wall of firearms there and the handgun case is full, you know. It seems like I’ve cornered the market on the 9mm. I’ve got every brand of 9mm made. It seems like in there.
SPEAKER 15 :
Again, yesterday when I was looking through there and I walked to that case, I was like, you couldn’t put another pistol in there. I mean, you’ve got a lot of pistols in there.
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah, it’s crazy in there. I kind of look at them as like the pandemic guns are coming back to haunt me now. People that bought pistols. Crazy, you know, on the 9mms, they weren’t necessarily handgun people. You know, they just bought them just because they can and they picked up what they needed it. And now they’re coming back in here. This is a good way to, you know, save some money on some very gently used handguns. I mean, some of them are brand new, guys. You know, I’ve got a bunch of Weatherby’s up there right now, a couple of Field Nice. You know, if you’re a left-hander and you’re looking for a Weatherby Mark V, I’m your man. I’ve got two of them here. So come on down.
SPEAKER 03 :
And, you know, I was looking around there yesterday. You’ve got a good selection of ammo, but just right there in front of the counter, folks can walk in the door, and you have a boatload of shotgun shells. I mean, I’ve seen some waterfowl stuff, you know, some clay shooting loads, whatever. But, I mean, you’ve got a lot of shotgun shells there at really good prices.
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah, I’ve got so much that I’m starting to try and – reduce the prices on them just to get some floor space back, you know, because that’s getting kind of valuable in my shop again, the floor space. And so there’s good deals on the ammo as well, you know.
SPEAKER 03 :
Sure. So the way it works, as Billy said, hey, you come in, if you’ve got some things you want to turn into cash and, you know, upgrade some things like that, he’ll open you an account and you can kind of build it up and check in when you want. And you can take your cash or spend it there, which is usually what I end up doing. Uh, but, uh, it’s just a great way. And then I can say you, you get to just see so many things in there and, you know, and Billy, I bought, you know, some boots there. And I want to mention that real quick, cause you’ve got a pretty good selection of boots and, and really in a, you know, from, I don’t know, I think the smallest size I happened to glance yesterday was a nine, but up to, I think I saw a pair of boots. It was a 15, 14 or 15 in there. So you’ve got, you got a pretty good selection there too.
SPEAKER 12 :
I do. Yeah. You know, and again, I mean, a lot of those boots, uh, Guys will try them on. They don’t want to break them in. They’re like, oh, they don’t fit. Well, you can’t return them. And so they bring them to me. You know, I’m selling something practically new for a lot cheaper than what you’re going to find at the big box stores.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, take a look and see if it fits you. Absolutely. It’s the Outdoorsman’s Attic, 2650 West Hamden. They’re in Sheridan. And, Billy, I mean, I know how to get there. I mean, the back of the store faces the main Hamden we all think about, but then you’ve got the little service road cut off there, right?
SPEAKER 12 :
Yeah, yeah, correct. It kind of runs parallel there, you know, on the north side of 285 between – I think that’s River Point Shopping Center. Right. The light there. And then Federal. Right. All right. Pretty easy to find.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah. And what are your hours, sir?
SPEAKER 12 :
So we’re closed on Sundays and Mondays. Tuesday through, excuse me, Tuesday through Friday, we’re open until, I’m here at about 830. And so if you guys show up, my Jeep’s sitting in the front, we’re open. Okay. The posted hours are 930, but I’m always here. Right. And then we’re open until 5.15 because I want to beat the traffic. Not 5.30. I found a sweet spot there, guys. 5.15 is when I want to win. All right.
SPEAKER 03 :
Then Saturdays is…
SPEAKER 12 :
Saturday we’re open from 9 to 4. 9 to 4.
SPEAKER 03 :
All right. Folks, I’m telling you, great, friendly shop. Billy and Haley are usually there. And just let them know you heard them here on Sportsman of Colorado. Oh, I want to mention this, too, on the clothing real quick. I noticed a sign yesterday that you had 50% off on some clothing that was 90 days or older. And, hey, mention Sportsman of Colorado, and we’ll just put it this way. There’s some extra discount Billy can do for you when you mention the show. He’ll do it for you. And, Billy, I’ve seen a lot of smaller sizes in there, even for some kids and different things. So that’s always a big struggle for parents is trying to find things for kids and not spending a lot of money. So, again, just come by and take a look and see what you got.
SPEAKER 12 :
That’s for sure, yeah. Kids’ clothing is always hot in here. It’s, you know. I can’t get enough of it, guys. And kids grow.
SPEAKER 03 :
Right.
SPEAKER 12 :
So bring it in.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, yeah. Put it in the money. Yeah, if you’ve got some, bring it to the store and let Billy open an account there and help another kid out to get out and enjoy the outdoors. So, Billy, we appreciate it, man. Thank you for all your years of support and friendship for the show. And I’m sure I will see you in the next couple of days.
SPEAKER 12 :
I can set my watch to it, Scott.
SPEAKER 03 :
All right, bud. All right, that’s Billy Paddock. It’s the Outdoorsman’s Attic, 2650 West Hampton. When you go in, just let them know you heard them here on Sportsman of Colorado, and we’d appreciate that. SPEAKER 03 :
Welcome back to Sportsman Colorado. Thank you so much for being with us. We are coming to you live from the world headquarters of Custom Air Solutions today. 720-839-7705 is the number. Now, if you listen to our Haystack show as well, you hear Dr. Melissa Fling there Wednesdays at 1230 with us. What she does is very important to this side of our show with Sportsman of Colorado with hearing protection. So, Dr. Fling, thanks for letting us come over to your studio today. How are you?
SPEAKER 09 :
Thank you, Scott. I’m great. How are you?
SPEAKER 03 :
I’m doing great. How have things been going so far? Been pretty busy?
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah, with pilots.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 09 :
Trying to keep up with them. And I tell you this every time, but I’m having… other pilots than just from united come i had a southwest guy the other day and he got actually he found me at the international sportsman’s expo oh i remember you mentioning that yeah okay and like every time i do the mile high hunt and fish expo i kind of think well maybe i should put my pilot ear molds out too but then i’m like well they probably won’t be here a lot of pilots are into the outdoors they’re everywhere fishing i mean but they do a lot yeah yeah i always run into them so anyway he found me at international sportsman’s expo and he came in the other day to to pick up his hearing protection and um you know we were talking a little bit earlier about how some hunters um might just not be on their radar to use hearing protection because they think well it’s just one shot and he he’s really no exception to that he’s kind of thinking the same thing and so talk in talking to him more about it i could just see like his mind was getting blown and he was like oh no i’ve got it it’s so important my hearing is so important i’ve got to start using it so he he got really excited about it and i’m excited to hear about what his experience is with his hearing protection now now that he has custom fitted hearing protection which he’s never had before So I’ll be excited to hear what he thinks about it.
SPEAKER 03 :
Absolutely. Yeah. We were talking on our Haystack show that we do, and again, we call it a segment, Listen Up. But we were kind of talking about suppressors, and we’ve done that on a few shows. But then you were giving me an OSHA standard on the threshold for what they talk about where hearing damage can occur. Would that be the right way to say it?
SPEAKER 09 :
Yes, but more importantly, the level at which hearing damage occurs instantly.
SPEAKER 03 :
Okay. Yes. Instantly. All right. So, and that’s 140 in the term is decibels. Yes, correct. And I was shocked to learn this. And when you made a list for us to look through, even if you take like a 22, which everybody listening shows probably shot those most of your life. Folks, did you realize those are up to 135 to 140 decibels just right there with a 22? And I mean, sometime really I’ll take you out and show, and you’re going to go, wow, I had no idea. Because I mean, it is nothing. It is such a small sound.
SPEAKER 09 :
And it’s so fast. Maybe that’s part of why it seems like nothing is it’s quick, right? And if you already have some hearing loss, it really might seem like nothing to you.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, and maybe that’s why I think it’s nothing.
SPEAKER 09 :
Could be part of it. Could be part of it. Yeah, because you’ve been using firearms for how long?
SPEAKER 03 :
Decades? I mean, really. Yeah, your whole life. 60 years.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah, you’re desensitized totally, whereas I’m not.
SPEAKER 03 :
No, you’re not. Yeah. We should have done a video that day. Your exit from the gun range. It wouldn’t have been a long video. I know, that’s for sure. And even pistols, and again, .22 pistol, 150 to 155 decibels. You get into your larger game firearms, your centerfire rifles, which, of course, .22, magnum rifles, shotguns, you get into that 165, 175 decibels. So suppressors are great. I own several, and they do help a lot. But I kind of want to just bring this up again because you brought it up. And again, all of our sponsors just about cell suppressors. And we talk about, hey, some are what we call hearing safe, where you really don’t need hearing protection. But I guess my approach today was just say, why not? Why not take that extra little bit of precaution to protect what hearing you have? Because at some point, all of us, no matter what,
SPEAKER 09 :
age is going to take over we’re going to lose some hearing so why not protect it yeah you know this reminds me of a conversation that i had with a technician at an ear mold lab several years ago when i was learning specifically what an impulse filter would do in an ear mold for hunters or shooters. And, you know, he was explaining to me the physics of it. And I asked, okay, so will that make it safe for them? And he said, no, safer, safer. It’s not safe ever. And I thought, oh, wow. Okay. So that’s a dramatic, that’s a bold statement to make, but it is also the truth. I think, um, So suppressors will make it safer. So let’s say you’re shooting one of the larger firearms that are up to 170 dB. Let’s say, for example, and I don’t know for sure. I’d have to look it up. Let’s say the suppressor brings it down 30 dB. Now you’re at 140 dB exposure, which is safer.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, but still the level.
SPEAKER 09 :
Still not safe. Still the level that OSHA quotes as doing instant damage. So then what you want to do on top of that, ideally, is have hearing protection that could potentially bring it down 30. another 20 to 30 db ideally double protection plugs or molds and muffs but that’s not always feasible or you know not always the ideal option depending on what you’re doing like if you’re hunting and you need to hear but that’s that’s ideal is to have a suppressor if you can And hearing protection. Bring the noise, bring your exposure level down as much as possible to make it safer.
SPEAKER 03 :
Right.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 03 :
And our setting today, and it just now hit me, as I mentioned, I think at the beginning of the show, we’re at her office here in Greenwood Village and actually in the sound booth where she does hearing tests. And this is what you’ve heard me describe like waterfowl hunting. And when you’re in a pit with a bunch of guys and gals, whatever the case may be, literally this close, I would be shooting a shotgun to you and your ears and your face in the same way I’m facing. So right or left, unless you’re on the very end of the lineup. you’re going to be getting a lot of blasts, not only just your own, but when you’ve got, sometimes there can be four, six people in there, and you’re all shooting at one time when the ducks or geese come in. So, whew.
SPEAKER 09 :
Just stresses me out listening to that description.
SPEAKER 03 :
It would be a lot. So, hey, I know we’re in that season right now, or at least when we’re airing this. So, hey, this is something that Dr. Fling offers at Custom Air Solutions. And it’s been a couple of shows since we’ve gone through a little bit of the lineup, so let’s hit that up for a minute.
SPEAKER 09 :
mm-hmm yep lineup of products is maximum protection ear molds which are 195 for the pair that is when you just need the most hearing protection you can get and you don’t need to communicate or be aware next up would be filtered ear molds that have impulse filters in them or any other kind of filter. That is ideal if you want to be able to hear between shots, if you want hearing protection but need to have some awareness or be able to communicate. Next up from there would be electronic. That is if you want to be able to not only hear but have some volume control, be able to turn volume up, and you want to have hearing protection the millisecond that there’s an impulse sound.
SPEAKER 06 :
Gotcha.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah. So the… I forgot to say the pricing. So the filtered ear molds are $260 for the pair. Electronic hearing protection would range anywhere from about $800 for the pair up to $1,500. And that will depend on whether the batteries are rechargeable, if there’s Bluetooth capability, and how many programs there are for different situations.
SPEAKER 03 :
Right.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 03 :
And, again, custom, I say, is the key, you know, because, I mean, it’s so nice, and you’ve made several things for me. It’s so nice to have something fit that where you don’t even notice it’s in your ear. Yeah. You know, and I’ve seen so many, you know, guys, especially at gun ranges where they take the foam plugs, which that’s at every gun range, and that’s better than nothing. I’m not saying don’t use those. But you have to know how to put them in your ear properly. Correct. Because most of the time after they expand, if you twist them right and really, and it’s hard to describe on ear, but really reaching over your head, pulling up on the top of the ear and inserting it in your ear canal is the thing you’re supposed to do. But I see a lot of people just crown them in the ear and it doesn’t stay. Right.
SPEAKER 09 :
Right, right. Yeah. And I mean, you can, you don’t have to reach around your head. You could do like, if I’m putting it on the left ear, I can grab my left ear with my left hand, roll it up with my right hand and then put it in. But it does take longer. It’s more tedious and there is more user. error in that than there is with ear muffs or ear molds. So, yeah, it’s just foam earplugs, they’ll give you the best hearing protection if you can get them in.
SPEAKER 06 :
Right.
SPEAKER 09 :
But if you can’t get them in or you’re not doing it properly, then they won’t give you that good of hearing protection. Right. Yeah.
SPEAKER 03 :
It’s Custom Air Solutions, 720-839-7705 is the number. Hearing exam. Let’s talk about that a minute. Okay. It’s got to be frustrating on your point, and I know it is because you tell me when we’re on. Why won’t people get a hearing test, all right? I mean, really, folks, I mean, when you think, how long is your hearing going to last? I don’t care what age you are, maybe veteran, maybe non-veteran, maybe you don’t shoot guns, whatever the case may be. At some point, your hearing is going to fail, okay? So why not get a baseline? Because you don’t know where you’ve been going if you don’t know where you’ve been, so to speak. So it’s just crucial, isn’t it, for hearing health?
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah. And I wish it’s so important for firearms users too. Like if we could really track hearing over the years in firearms users, um, that would be so helpful because it will tell us is the hearing protection that you’re using currently. Well, if you’re using hearing protection, Is it effective or not? Now, we talked earlier about safe versus safer. So, you know, going into using hearing protection with firearms, we already have to have the understanding that hearing protection will not necessarily make it safe, period, but it will make it safer. And that’s what we want to do. So if we can monitor that along the way, it will help us know is what you’re using effective or do we need to optimize it even more and figure out what’s causing it to not be as effective. Or if you’re symptomatic after a hunt or a shoot, you know, if your ears are ringing, your hearing protection is not good enough or the exposure is too much and you need to reconsider it.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah. Yeah. Once again, Dr. Fling will be at the 2026 Mile High Hunt Expo. That is March 20th through the 22nd. It’ll be at the brand new event center at the National Western Stock Show area. There is a great new event center they built. We are certainly happy to be there. We’ve got a great lineup for you. Still a few booths left as well, so if you’re interested in that, let me know. But Dr. Fling will be there, Custom Air Solutions. I hope you’ll come see her. We do have a promo code real quick, SOCR, for Sportsman of Colorado Radio, SOCR2026. And that’ll get you 10% off of your purchase. Now, let me explain the 10% real quick. Instead of doing something like $2 or $3 off a ticket, we have found over the first two years of the Expo, many people bought multiple day tickets. Doing 10% saves you more money. All right, so just use that SOCR. And go to milehighhuntexpo.com for your tickets there. And come see us and Dr. Fling. So, Dr. Fling, thanks for your time.
SPEAKER 09 :
Thank you, Scott.
SPEAKER 03 :
Thanks for being with us. You’re listening to Sports from Colorado. We’ve got to take a quick break. We’ll be back with more right after this. Here’s your Water Talk Minute with Paul the Waterman, brought to you by Water Pros.
SPEAKER 01 :
Folks, everybody needs to go to the EPA website and check out the contaminated candidate list. There’s unregulated contaminants that have been in our drinking water forever. And what that means is that municipalities don’t have to test for them. So we have 1,4-dioxin. It’s an unregulated contaminant that’s been in the water supply since the early 1900s. We have synthetic estrogen that’s in our water supply. We have pesticides, herbicides in our water supply. So this is something that educate yourself. This is why we need a point-of-use reverse osmosis system for our drinking water, because of all the contaminants that the EPA is not allowing our municipalities to tell us about.
SPEAKER 13 :
This is AM 560 KLZ, your home station.
SPEAKER 03 :
Welcome back to Sportsman of Colorado. We appreciate you being with us today. We’re going to bring you now a couple interviews that we did at the International Sportsman’s Expo. He was in town at the Denver Convention Center. And, man, we had a great show. I want to say we appreciate all the guests that came by our booth, that we were able to interview, as well as folks that just stopped by that said they listened to the show and KLZ 560. And we appreciate our loyal listeners. So you’re going to hear a lot in the background. It was really loud there from the 2026 International Sportsman’s Expo. Welcome back to Sportsman of Colorado again. Thank you so much for joining us. Just a quick reminder now, you missed our live show on Saturdays. You can catch us twice on Sundays, 8 and 8, 8 a.m., 8 p.m. Then the following Thursday, 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. And, of course, you can get our podcast where you get yours or by simply going to sportsmanofcolorado.com. Well, as you can tell from some of the interviews we’ve been doing, these are still some interviews from the 2026 International Sportsman’s Expo that we wrapped up last week. And, again, you know, we have so many of our great friends here and sponsors. We see time after time after time. But every once in a while, we walk down an aisle and see something we haven’t seen before. And that includes our next guest, Jean Dubé. John Dubé. I told Kevin I never got to say that on Sportsman of Colorado.
SPEAKER 04 :
How are you? I’m really well. You sound like a French Canadian when you say that.
SPEAKER 03 :
Exactly. All right. Heat it. You bet. That’s it. All right. So, hey, check it out while we’re talking about it. Heat-it.com. Insect bite healer. Hey, I don’t know about you, but man, I tell you, you get in some places where mosquitoes or something loves you and you walk out, you’re all bit up and you can’t get relief. I think we’ve got the relief for you here with Sean. John, tell us a little bit of history of this thing, how it came about, and tell us how it can help our listeners.
SPEAKER 04 :
All right. Well, this is actually invented and engineered and manufactured in Germany, so we kind of know it’s going to work, you know. We have a bunch of young university engineering students, maybe half a dozen, six years ago. They were kite surfers, you know. They were crashing on the beaches there and getting mauled by mosquitoes and other flying insects and things. one of their girlfriends took out a heat pen and they didn’t know what it was it’s about the size of a mini mag flashlight yeah takes a couple of double a’s or triple a’s you know and you just apply a short concentrated burst of heat to the bug bite and man scott the bug bite goes away
SPEAKER 06 :
Wow.
SPEAKER 04 :
Yeah. Yeah. Well, being engineering students, you know, they said, well, how do we make it better? Exactly. So instead of getting something the size of a mini mag, you know, flashlight or a small device that has a double A, triple A that you got to replace and throw away. They invented the world’s very first smartphone. That’s right. It’s your smartphone powered insect bite healer. You know what? I know what you’re thinking out there. I did too. It took me a couple of months to drop the skepticism. My daughter got married in Canada last summer. Oh my. Game changer. grandma could do the same thing with a hot teaspoon in a cup of tea you get a hot spoon you put that on your bug bite it has the same impact in fact impact but grandma’s been out of pocket for a while exactly yeah and i tell you you know when you just uh did it for me over there i could certainly feel the heat yes and not not a pain but i mean it was warm yeah okay definitely warm and and
SPEAKER 03 :
I can see, as I believe, you know, how that will take. I can’t wait to get to it. You might know where I can find some mosquitoes. I want to test this out. But, no, seriously, I think it’s easy to see how that can take away that pain. Because, man, sometimes they get you, and, dude, you just want to itch your leg to death or arm.
SPEAKER 04 :
Hey, Scott, you know, bug bites are a real distraction. You know, 80% of American outdoor enthusiasts, 80% have actually suffered from insect bites. They’ve been a nuisance, let’s say, right? And 50% of outdoor enthusiasts have actually changed their plans Because of the bugs. You know, you’re going on a three-day trip. You decide to make it a two-day trip. You want to barbecue in the backyard. No, we’re not going to do that. Hey, we’re going to go to the farm this weekend or we’re going to shoot some… No, we’re not going to do that. The bugs are too bad. Well, traditionally, what would happen is people either stay home or they suffer the consequences or they apply… to their skin. Chemicals, you know, the afterbite type things and the creams and the steroids. And that’s not great. That’s not great. So, heat heals.
SPEAKER 03 :
All right. So, we’re going to come up with a promo code, and we’ll advertise that on a future show. But I’m telling you, folks, Now I’m being very transparent. I used it just to see what it felt like. Kevin I haven’t been here in the convention center. It’s January. Yeah. But I’m telling you I really truly believe like this is a real deal and a real product. How can folks go about getting it? All right.
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, let me explain a little bit about the science behind it. It’s really quite amazing. You know, when a mosquito bites you, she’s busy probing to find a vessel, a blood vessel. Sometimes she hits it right off the bat and it’s, you know, lucky, lucky number seven, off she goes. But sometimes she’s in and out of you like a dozen times looking for a vessel. And when she does that, her saliva contains some protein. so protein has been injected into your body and your body does what it was created to do it fights that it has a reaction it deploys histamines to the area now the histamines encounter the proteins and you get a big red bone big itch smell that’s what happens if you do nothing it just stays itchy but the direct application of heat it denatures the protein think of an egg white in a frying pan, 120 degrees, right? So this little thing applies a concentrated burst of heat onto the bug bite, denatures the proteins, the histamines retreat, they go back to barracks, and the bug bite itch goes away within 30 to 90 seconds.
SPEAKER 06 :
Wow.
SPEAKER 04 :
I know, I know.
SPEAKER 15 :
You’ll know if it works or not.
SPEAKER 04 :
You’ll know right away. Actually, it’s quite soothing when you do apply it. You know, I grew up and the cars were still made out of metal. So on a hot day, you just apply your bug-bitten forearm to the car. Why does that feel so good, right? You know, I got a friend down in Mississippi. I sent him one in the fall and he called me back. He said, John, I don’t know what kind of voodoo is in that thing, but my little girl gets pet and now she says, dad, dad, do the phone, do the phone thing, you know? So it’s great for the entire family. It’s super intuitive. And the beauty of it is, You always have your phone with you, don’t you? Sure. Right? Yeah. And, you know, you charge your phone every day, so you’ve got lots of battery.
SPEAKER 03 :
Now, what works for you to keep it, though? This is a little device that fits in where the charger is. I mean, do people carry it in their pocket? Oh.
SPEAKER 04 :
You know, I’ve made a mistake of running mine through the laundry a couple of times. I don’t recommend that, but it’s mine still okay. It actually comes with a hard resin case, a little thing the size of a, I don’t know, maybe a sugar cube. I don’t know. It’s very small. And there’s a hole in it for you to clip to your key chain because most folks are going to have their key chain and their phone with them.
SPEAKER 03 :
Not that our keys have keys on them anymore. They’ve got to pop, you know. But, no, that’s really cool. It looks kind of like a USB cable. something like that about that size. But uh, I’m telling you folks, this is really cool. Now the website is heat. Hyphen it.com so heat dash it.com and again. Maybe even when this airs, I’ll have the code and I’ll add this to this segment. But if you don’t hear a promo code today, we will have one for you upcoming here in the near future. And so what are they selling for on the website?
SPEAKER 04 :
The website, they’re $40 on the website. We’ll get your folks a nice discount, you know, 20% or something like that, so they can enjoy an itch-free summer. And the beauty of this is, as fantastic as it is for us as outdoorsmen, fishermen and hunters, you know, soccer moms sitting in a grassy field watching their kids, Little League, you know, it is backyard barbecue. Runners usually can outrun the mosquitoes.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 04 :
But when they stop to stretch or change direction, they are a delicious mosquito magnet.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yep. Absolutely. Yeah, yeah. All right, Heat It. It’s a medical device that relieves itching from insect bites through heat. Simply plug Heat It into your smartphone, select a temperature mode in the Heat It app, and start the treatment. And always with you, compact, it’s lightweight, easily attached to a key ring, and, hey, super quick, effective. It’s patented. They have a child mode. As a matter of fact, there’s 12 modes of treatment. Yes, sir. There’s a child mode, drug-free, and, hey…
SPEAKER 04 :
we can promise you it is it isn’t going to hurt the mosquito bot all right it’s going to help so it’s going to help you a lot it’s actually usfda registered it’s a it’s a type 2 medical device okay so it’s hsa and fsa eligible you can you can get it for free you can expense it to your your health savings account there you go all right man anything we missed no other than It’s a wonderful little miracle tool that will just keep you from scratching those bites. You will never, ever have to buy another topical or oral antihistamine or cream or deal with those kinds of chemicals. This is all natural, just heat.
SPEAKER 03 :
Man, that’s so cool. Yeah. Well, Jean Duvet, I wish you were a guest every week. I wish every guest was called Jean Duvet. But, man, we appreciate it. And, yeah, I look forward to working with you guys, helping to get the word out about this. I mean, man, to put this in a backpack, it’s going to go on. Like I say, on a key chain, whatever the case may be, man, this is something. And, you know, you get out in place in Alaska, different places like that, especially with different mosquito seasons can be rough. Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER 04 :
If it flies and bites you, this is going to help you. You know, and we need to get people outside. Outside is where health happens for people in the planet.
SPEAKER 03 :
Let’s get outside. All right, man. John, we appreciate it. Do the handshake on radio. No one else can see, but we appreciate it. Heat it. So the website, once again, is HEAT-IT.com. And again, we’ll get you a discount code here for it. Now, they do come with the USB type. And then what’s the other technical term?
SPEAKER 04 :
Well, it’s a lightning device.
SPEAKER 03 :
The lightning, which is the thinner type slide that goes into the phone or the little bit fatter one.
SPEAKER 04 :
That’s the way I would describe it. Simply put, the iPhones used to use lightning adapters right up to the iPhone 14, 2002. And then, you know, now we have the universal, the USB-C for Android as well as any iPhone 15, 16, 17. So there you go, yeah. All right, cool.
SPEAKER 03 :
Thank you. A lot of things here at the 26th International Sportsman’s Expo, but you know what? I didn’t expect to find something that would help me with a mosquito bite. Now we have. Heat it. Don’t forget it. Don’t scratch it. Heat it. Now there’s you attacking. I should charge you for that. I’m going to go trademark that right now. Heat it. All right. Head that to the marketing team. John, we thank you so much. And, Kevin, we’ve got other folks lined up, so we’ll get back to some here in a minute. But you’re listening to Sportsman of Colorado. We’ve got to take a quick break, and we’ll be back with more right after this.
SPEAKER 08 :

SPEAKER 03 :
Welcome back to the show. Hey, we are wrapping things up here at the 2026 International Sportsman’s Expo downtown Denver. It has been a fabulous four days. Now, the time you’re hearing this, it wrapped up last week. OK, but you’ve heard a lot of our existing sponsors. We’ve got to meet a lot of great new people as well. Our final guest is not new to us by any means. They have been an exhibitor at our Mile High Hunt and Fish Expo the last couple of years. Been very, very loyal here to the International Sportsman’s Expo. Been here for many, many years. And a great friend of mine, Tracy, up north, has been telling me about A to Z Sport Fishing Charters in Sitka, Alaska, for many years. And he’s been taking… Guys and gals up there for several years now and a lot of them. So we finally got to get with Brian Jardine here and get him on the show. And, Brian, great to see you, man. Nice seeing you. How’s it going? How did it work out here for this expo this year?
SPEAKER 05 :
It’s good. I do really well at the show. I can take a lot of people from Colorado, and they’re great people. And I just like advertising and getting new clients from this area.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, absolutely. And it seems like from what I’ve heard from Tracy as well, I mean, You may have a whole bunch of guys. You may have husbands and wives. You may have families. I mean, you get the whole gamut, don’t you?
SPEAKER 05 :
Oh, yeah, yeah, we do. We mainly concentrate. We like to take families, young kids. We just get a kick out of taking them, watching them grow. I’ve had buddies come up with their kids that are four years old, and now they’re starting to have kids of their own bringing them. So it’s great to have just everybody.
SPEAKER 03 :
Right, okay.
SPEAKER 14 :
Yeah, I think one of the things to talk about, you know, some of the advantages of fishing with you, first of all, getting to your place and how you make that so simple to get to Sitka.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah, Sitka’s a neat place. It gets serviced by Alaskan Airlines, so you fly right in on the big 737s. So you don’t have any of those commuter flights, rental cars, hotels, you know, any of that stuff that just, in Alaska, it just adds up. Right. You just fly in, we pick you up, we get you settled in, and you’re out fishing the very next day. Exactly.
SPEAKER 14 :
And then you’re in Sitka proper, so to speak. So small port town, you still have some services there. So folks that are worried about maybe I don’t have this or that or I want to do something at night, talk about sort of around the lodge what’s going on too.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah, we’re about three and a half, four miles out of downtown Sitka. Super easy to get to, but the town has everything. It’s got restaurants and grocery stores. It’s got everything you’d ever need. There’s a movie theater. There’s all sorts of stuff. And as far as sightseeing, we’ve got Castle Hill, Fortress of the Bears, the Raptor Center. There’s the Bishop’s House, the Cathedral. There’s all sorts of stuff to check out throughout the evenings when you’re done fishing. Okay, we’ve gotten there. We’ve got the side stuff. Let’s talk about the fishing. Yeah, let’s talk about the fishing.
SPEAKER 03 :
You have several packages.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yep. So let’s run through those. We do day trips. If you’re in town and you’re visiting family or visiting somebody that you know there, you can jump on a boat. We do cruise ships. Cruise ships come into town. Sometimes it’s four or five of those a day in town. So if you’re in town for half a day or three-quarters of a day, we can get you out fishing. But we mainly do the package deals where we have our own lodge. and we do everything the packages include the meals the lodging the licenses all the necessary stamps for salmon and halibut all the rain gear the bait the boots unlimited fish processing it’s absolutely everything you step off the plane we take care of 100 until you’re ready to depart we put you back on the plane with boxes and boxes of vacuum sealed blast frozen labeled fish just ready to fear freezer wow that is so good
SPEAKER 03 :
Absolutely. Brian Jardine is with us. He is the owner of A to Z Fishing Charters. The number 907-738-2796. You can check out the website. It’s A and then a hyphen, A-Z, sportfishingcharters.com. Now, we’re going to get into a lot of things here, but in your brochure, I notice here, we carry GAF permits on board. Explain that for those that may not know.
SPEAKER 05 :
So a GAAP permit is a federal program they came up with that allows licensed charter operators to lease commercial IFQs off the commercial quota. So every last year, for instance, and it changes every year, last year it was every 60 pounds of IFQs I leased off a commercial fisherman converted into a single tag. That tag allowed me to harvest an additional halibut of any size. So when guys fish on a normal boat, there’s length restrictions and daily restrictions. These gap tags are just a bonus fish that you can put on any size you want, whether it be big or small. And we target the big fish. So if you want to keep and harvest that big 100, 200 pounder, Gap tags, they’re necessary. And they’re awesome.
SPEAKER 03 :
If people have ever hooked on to a 75-pounder, they have no idea what that feels like.
SPEAKER 05 :
It’s a completely different animal than a 30-pounder. Oh, yeah. And then, like I said, myself and my captains, this is what we do. We target the big fish probably more than anybody else. I’m a huge gap tag supporter. I own my own IFQs. I convert them. It’s a game changer. We target big fish every day.
SPEAKER 14 :
So is the gaff tag a certain price, or is it based upon the weight of the fish?
SPEAKER 05 :
No, it’s a certain price, and every year it changes. It depends on how many pounds I have to lose to get a tag, and then I have to negotiate with the commercial fishermen. So essentially, I pay them not to go fish. And I’ve got guys that realize that it’s… This is the market price, and some guys give me a break because I buy so many. So, you know, come April is when I start negotiating with all the fishermen. But I want to make sure that I have enough gap tags for every single angler. I do not run out. So it’s a big out-of-pocket expense for me, but also my captains have to be good enough to put my clients on big enough fish that they want these. Then it makes sense. So if you take last year or the year before, what will kind of be a range be? Last year, those tags were about $400. Okay, okay. And the good thing about it is I pay for these permits. I have them on the boat. It’s the out-of-pocket expense for me. When you catch that fish, you bring it up to the boat. We’ll tell you about how big that fish is. You get to decide if you want the tag. If it’s not worth it, we let it go. If you want bigger, we look for bigger. So you’re out absolutely nothing until you’re happy with that fish and you’re willing to buy that tag. Right. And I also run specials at a lot of these sports shows where if you book at a show, I’ll comp you a gap tag just as a bonus. wow that’s so and you know what kevin it’s not like that with the several ones we’ve yeah you know yeah you you catch a halibut and it may be 12 pounds they go well there’s your halibut yeah i mean they don’t even give you a choice you know oh no no we’re we we catch 15 20 halibut day before we find the right size we want yeah like i said we target them we we have all the little tricks and the little secrets and how to produce these big fish and And we harvest a lot of big fish.
SPEAKER 14 :
And it takes time. I mean, it’s not something that you can pull up to a spot generally and run into a big fish because it takes… Yes and no.
SPEAKER 05 :
We know, we’ve studied, we’ve fished, and we’ve studied structure that we pretty much have a good idea where these big fish are. Right. So, I mean, we go to these spots that we shouldn’t, if we don’t, if we haven’t put a big fish in the boat in an hour and a half, we’re going to move. Yeah. Because we know where they live and we go right to them. We use the right bait. which is another little trade secret. Yeah, run certain rigs, certain bait, certain right and it gives us the upper hand and how to catch these.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, man, that is so cool. Yeah, alright, here’s what the packaging now he’s got three days, four night packages, four day, five night, five day, six night packages. You heard him talk about the day trips. If you’re just in the area, you’re taking a cruise ship. Hey, you want to go do some fishing? He has really got it all covered. Your one-stop shop there for Sitka, Alaska, some great fishing. So with the packages, the all-inclusive fishing packages, it’s transportation to and from the airport and daily fishing trips, your lodging, breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, water, soda, 10 hours of fully guided fishing a day. It sounds like our kind of deal. Yes. All fishing equipment, tackle, and like you said, all the rain gear. And that is something. I’m saying this to me, not to Kevin. Kevin will pull up in like a backpack for the week, and I’ve got like two big bags and stuff. Just listen to what they say to pack. You’ve got all the rain gear. You don’t need 30 changes of clothes and stuff.
SPEAKER 05 :
No, we tell everybody to bring a carry-on with a bunch of clothes that you can carry on. We have laundry facilities at the lodge. We take care of all that stuff. That’s more boxes of fish you get to take home at a cheaper rate.
SPEAKER 14 :
Right, absolutely. The other thing we haven’t talked about, too, are the boats that you guys run. That’s important, I think, especially because you’re out in the open ocean. Tell us about the boats that you’re running and what guests should expect relating to the cabins. Is there a head? That sort of thing.
SPEAKER 05 :
We’re running 30, 32-foot boats. They’re all walk-arounds, outboards, so you don’t have that diesel smell. They all have heated cabins, satellite radio, enclosed bathrooms, the heads. They’re all really comfortable.
SPEAKER 03 :
Wow.
SPEAKER 05 :
You know, so you’re not out in the elements all day long. You’re in a nice, warm cabin when you’re traveling. And we get out to the fishing. Everybody’s fishing, going, running around the deck, netting fish, gaffing fish. And then when you want to take a break, you’re back in a nice, warm cabin to take a break.
SPEAKER 03 :
Sure. And I’ll tell you, everything from talking with you, talking with Tracy through the years, Man, your return guest number is through the roof.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah, we do really well on that. That’s one thing I could, I’m real happy that my clients have all been very happy and they want to come back. They refer a lot of clients and now I’m doing it long enough that I’m getting into a a whole separate generation of family members that are fishing with me.
SPEAKER 03 :
That makes you feel good. Yeah, it is nice. For sure. All right, hey, it is A to Z Fishing, and check them out when you call. Hey, let them know you heard them here on Sportsman of Colorado, and we would appreciate that as well. But it is A-Z, sportfishingcharters.com. Talk to Brian there. His number is 907-738-2796. He will be back with us in March, March 20th through the 22nd. at the third annual Mile High Hunt and Fish Expo at our new location there at the Western Events Center. And that’s going to be a great show as well. Meals. I see a few pictures here. You feed people good, too, I’ve heard.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah, we do. Every year our chef makes up a new menu, but typically there’s going to be a night where you’re going to get prime rib or ribeye, brisket, ribs, halibut, salmon, crab.
