In this engaging episode of Rush to Reason, host John Rush dives into a range of topics from essential financial advice as we near the end of the year, to emotional health tips during the holiday season. Financial expert Al Smith joins to offer his strategies on managing required minimum distributions and navigating the busy holiday financial deadlines. With only a few weeks left of 2023, this episode offers crucial guidance on ensuring your financial health is in top shape.
SPEAKER 15 :
This is Rush to Reason.
SPEAKER 14 :
You are going to shut your damn yapper and listen for a change because I got you pegged, sweetheart. You want to take the easy way out because you’re scared. And you’re scared because if you try and fail, there’s only you to blame. Let me break this down for you. Life is scary. Get used to it. There are no magical fixes.
SPEAKER 16 :
With your host, John Rush.
SPEAKER 10 :
My advice to you is to do what your parents did. Get a job, sir. You haven’t made everybody equal. You’ve made them the same, and there’s a big difference.
SPEAKER 04 :
Let me tell you why you’re here. You’re here because you know something. What you know you can’t explain, but you feel it. You’ve felt it your entire life, that there’s something wrong with the world. You don’t know what it is, but it’s there. It is this feeling that has brought you to me.
SPEAKER 03 :
Are you crazy? Am I? Or am I so sane that you just blew your mind?
SPEAKER 12 :
It’s Rush to Reason with your host, John Rush. Presented by Cub Creek Heating and Air Conditioning.
SPEAKER 02 :
I am Hans. And I am Franz. And we just want to pop you on.
SPEAKER 16 :
Welcome to Health and Wellness Wednesdays on Rush to Reason. Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life, sir.
SPEAKER 15 :
I have what doctors call a little bit of a weight problem. I used to grab bear claws as a kid, two at a time, and I’d get them lodged right in this region here.
SPEAKER 10 :
Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don’t shoot their husbands.
SPEAKER 01 :
Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place, and I don’t care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. But it ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.
SPEAKER 06 :
I’m sorry that I’m fat.
SPEAKER 13 :
All right, it is that time. Health and Wellness Wednesday, Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560. Thanks for joining us today. We appreciate it. Al Smith joining us here as we finish out the year. Al, we’ve got just a couple of weeks left. Things are rolling down, and I appreciate you joining me.
SPEAKER 03 :
Well, they are, and they’re rolling down things before December 31st to include required minimum distributions and Roth conversions. In the last few weeks, I’ve helped people get their required minimum distributions, and those have been taken care of. But I wouldn’t wait any longer. If we need to reach out to any financial companies, they get incredibly busy over the next 10 days.
SPEAKER 13 :
Absolutely. Yeah. So reminder for those of you looking to do any of those things as we really wind down this week, my suggestion is, yeah, I know there’s a couple of days next week before Christmas Eve. But boy, I would tell you, if you’re trying to get anything done, get it done this week. Got a couple of days left is all. And then we’re on into the holidays at that point. And a lot of places will be either unstaffed or minimally staffed over those two weeks over Christmas, New Year. So, Al, to your point, yes, if somebody needs to do something, do it sooner than later.
SPEAKER 03 :
Absolutely.
SPEAKER 13 :
All right. You brought a sheet of some things as we get into the year end here. And people maybe are thinking, you know, listen, I’m always trying to find something for that hard to buy person, or I’m just looking to make somebody else’s life better this time of the year. You know, that giving season, I guess you could say, Al, is upon us. Give us some things folks can look at doing this time of year.
SPEAKER 03 :
Well, there’s some things you can do that they don’t have to be an alternative to a present. But maybe if you know a couple that has small children and maybe they both work and this is an incredibly frantic time for them because it’s difficult to shop for little children. You can’t bring little children with you. Watch their kids one evening. They can go out and have a meal and maybe buy a few presents for their children. And that’s a real way to help out kids. If you know a caregiver, caregivers spend enormous amounts of time taking care of maybe grandma or their brother or someone.
SPEAKER 13 :
Spouse sometimes.
SPEAKER 03 :
Yeah, could be a spouse. And whoever is providing that care, their own health kind of has a tendency to deteriorate.
SPEAKER 13 :
Sure does, Al. Absolutely it does.
SPEAKER 03 :
So sit in for them so they can get a night off, go to a movie, get a break from providing this care for another person.
SPEAKER 13 :
Absolutely. And we talked a little bit about this. Bob and I did on the podcast this morning, National Crawford Roundtable. It’s funny Al brought this because he didn’t know what we talked about. You know, this is one of those times of the year where, you know, look for things where you can help somebody else out. And sometimes, you know, depending upon the individual, and frankly, these are the people I enjoy helping, Al, are the ones that are never seeking help. They don’t ask for help. They try to manage things on their own. You know, they’re not out there with their hand out, you know, waiting for help. somebody to come along and help them out. They’re self sufficient, yet, they do need a handout or a hand up if you would, because they’re, they’re, you know, they’re, they’re not going to ask or just not those types of individuals. And, of course, these are the individuals that are extremely thankful when you do help them. The key there is what I’m saying, Alice, you have to look for those people, you’re not going to find them naturally.
SPEAKER 03 :
Well, that’s absolutely correct. And some things you can do for people like some people don’t spend much money on clothing. They have what they need and you’re not sure exactly what to do for that person. See if you can wash their car, detail their car or something like that. Or if they have a dog, tell them, hey, I’ll shampoo and groom your dog. That way they don’t have to take it to the groomer and drop it off and everything like that. You can do that for them. So there’s all kinds of things you can do for folks you love or maybe people you don’t even know.
SPEAKER 13 :
Absolutely.
SPEAKER 03 :
Volunteer at a soup kitchen.
SPEAKER 13 :
Yeah, and by the way, we’ve got everything from the Denver Rescue Mission downtown. Lots of churches have soup kitchens and or pantries, things along those lines. Some of you might even have those in your own church. And, yeah, my suggestion is if you want to try to do something for somebody special and you just don’t know how to find them, trust me, they’re out there, and you can find individuals that need help. Everybody out or every— Every neighborhood, I don’t care, rich, poor, it doesn’t matter. Every neighborhood has somebody in it that needs some help from time to time. And back to your caregiver end of things, boy, I can’t stress that one enough. If you know somebody, even a family member, and they’re the caregiver of somebody else in your family or somebody that they’re just caring for on a regular basis, that is a huge job that they get very little credit in doing. And if you can reach out and help them by any means, I’ll absolutely do so.
SPEAKER 03 :
Well, very true. If you know someone who’s living in assisted living and maybe their situation seems pretty good, but you haven’t been there for a few years, offer to take that person out to breakfast, out to lunch or something, because they’re probably not driving and that sort of thing. So they would genuinely appreciate that. And one idea that’s controversial that I may do this year is re-gifting.
SPEAKER 17 :
Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER 03 :
I have gotten some gifts that are still in the box, and I know some other people would definitely use those and just be sure not to re-gift it to the same person who gave it to you.
SPEAKER 13 :
um great advice by the way and i know exactly what i’ll mean sometimes there’s things that we get from individuals that you know here’s the deal they may not know us super well we might even have a similar item that they went ahead and they bought a different item so now you’ve got this item sitting there and by the way it’s an item you might use but you don’t need two of them And so at the end of the day, sure, I have no issues with people even re-gifting something to myself. If they’re not using it and, you know, rather than trying to, you know, throw it away or take it down to Goodwill or something, if you know somebody that can use it, we’ll absolutely give it to them. Have no problem with that whatsoever.
SPEAKER 03 :
No, no, absolutely. Lots of imaginative alternatives at Christmastime besides just jumping on the Internet or driving to the mall.
SPEAKER 13 :
Absolutely. So again, bottom line here is, first of all, if you’ve got things financially speaking you need to get taken care of, talk to Al on that. He can help you with all of those things. Absolutely, Golden Eagle Financial. You can find him at klzradio.com. But on top of that, if you’re looking to make a difference, that’s really what we’re talking about here, Al. If you’re looking to make a difference in the life of someone else, And sometimes that can be a monetary gift. Sometimes that can be a gift card. Sometimes it can be a physical item. Sometimes it can be an act of service. As you just mentioned, Al, there’s numerous ways you can help others out. And the key there is to really know what do they need and then provide that need for them.
SPEAKER 03 :
Well, you’re absolutely right. If you have concerns about taxation as you’re saving toward or moving into retirement, we’re having an event January 10th at Arapahoe Community College, Effective Tax Strategies for Retirement. Call my office if you’d like to attend, 303-744-1128. Or if you’d just like to have a conversation with me at my office, call that same number.
SPEAKER 13 :

You’re a great partner of ours, and I mean that sincerely of mine individually, and I appreciate it greatly. Thank you for all that you do, not only for me, but for all of our listeners and KLZ, and a Merry, Merry Christmas to you and all of your family, sir.
SPEAKER 03 :

SPEAKER 16 :
Listen online, klzradio.com. Back to Rush to Reason.
SPEAKER 13 :
And we are back, Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560. Owen Marcus joining us now, founder and CEO of MELD, which is Men’s Emotional Leadership Development and author of Grow Up, A Man’s Guide to Emotional Maturity. And as we kind of head down, number one, Owen, welcome. But as we head down this stretch into Christmas, this is a time of year where for a lot of folk, men included, it can be a very depressing time of the year, I guess is the best way for me to say that.
SPEAKER 05 :
You’re right, and all the stress that we’ve often accumulated the whole year ends up coming out around the holidays.
SPEAKER 13 :
Yeah, it does. Okay, so between that, the holidays themselves can create some burnout, emotional overload in some cases, depending upon your life and what may have happened in your past. You could have some emotional issues with folks passing, dying, divorces, things like that. How do we as men, how do we navigate all of that, Owen?
SPEAKER 05 :
We don’t fight our physiology, which is really a stress response, which ultimately is a survival response. So we understand that our physiology is taken over, even though we might not want it, it’s taken over. And then part of that is that we accumulate chronic stress, what the scientists call allostatic load. So what happens throughout life and throughout the year, and particularly through the holidays, is we just pile on more and more stress And one thing we can do is take the edge off of some of that stress. So the more you know you’re going to be under stress, if you have ways to not just cope with it, but sort of alleviate it or give your body, not just your mind, but your body some more opportunities to relax or downregulate, which is to slow down and relax your stress response, the better results. capable or more resilient you’re going to be in these stressful times.
SPEAKER 13 :
Okay. For guys that are out there listening, thinking, yeah, that sounds great, Owen, but I’ve got, you know, bills to pay. Christmas gives us a high burn rate when it comes to, you know, cash and finances. So yeah, you guys, you know, it’s great that you guys are talking about it, but how do I actually do that, Owen?
SPEAKER 05 :
Well, I’m not going to be paying your bills, but I can tell you that we don’t have to do it alone. So one of the things, particularly guys do is, um, We’re trained to be the performer, to provide, and to protect. And so there’s a whole phenomenon called co-regulation. And what the scientists have found, and we’ve found over the years to be true, is when we can authentically connect to people that we feel safe with, that connection, their down-regulation, their relaxin’, their being connected to us, will relax us. So I know that’s harder in the holidays, and sometimes that dysregulation of others can make us more stressed. But having opportunities, say with your partner or maybe your kids, where you can just play, relax, have fun, and that connection will down-regulate or relax both of us. And be strategic about that and plan to do that maybe every day. Even a five minutes to connect with your partner can make a world of difference for him or her But also for us. And you know that you have that thing or that connection to look forward to as the day goes. If it gets stressed, you go, well, I’m going to come home. and just connect and sit down and have a meal with my family.
SPEAKER 13 :
Okay, which I know for a lot of folks, rather than doing that, they go to other things. They abuse substances or alcohol or whatever, and really they’ve got an opportunity with their own family to have a stress reliever, but yet sometimes we as men, so many different answers on this, Owen, as to why, but a lot of times we won’t do that. We go to other things instead.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah. And John, we are sort of trained to do that by the culture, by our coping mechanisms. And you’re right. We often reach for a substance to take the edge off. It might take the edge off, but those substances never get rid of the stress. And inevitably, when the edge is gone, you know, the stress comes right back. So understanding, you know, that the body wants to relax. It’s just that when it is in a stress state, it’s in a survival state. So we can’t really talk to our body like we might talk to ourselves or someone else. We have to talk to it via the body. So one simple thing that we can do is we can work with our breath. So our breath, as we all know, is an automatic, autonomic phenomenon. It just runs on its own like a heartbeat. But the breath, we can change. It’s pretty hard to change our heartbeat. So when we slow down our breath, particularly our exhale of our breath, we start to slow down our physiology through the vagus nerve, and we start slowing down, and we’re telling our body that we feel safe, and as we feel safer and safer, we slow down more.
SPEAKER 13 :
Okay, so, and that’s going to be one of my questions is, you know, physically speaking, and this is health and wellness, we do this every hour on Wednesdays, first hour of every Wednesday we do this. I’ve been doing this for… gosh, I went probably eight, nine years now, and I do know that our food, our intake, what we’re drinking, again, talking about even the substance sides of things, you’re talking about the breathing sides of things, exercise, I mean, basically staying more healthy and I know because I’ve talked about this with plenty of experts, I’m not one, by the way, but I’ve interviewed enough experts to know that the healthier we stay, the healthier our brains are, and we regulate our emotions much better when we’re doing that correctly, or am I wrong in saying that?
SPEAKER 05 :
You’re 100% right, and that’s something that we don’t realize, and as you would say, often we don’t eat or maybe drink the best we could or should during the holidays, and we don’t realize that all the carbs, all the sugar, all the alcohol, late nights, all that, we pay our price for, particularly as we get older.
SPEAKER 13 :
Very true. I know for myself, when I turned 55, you could see metabolism starting to change, and I had to watch more closely a lot of the things that even you and I are talking about right now, especially food intake, because I love food, and I’m a stress eater, so I’m one of those, Owen, where I’m different. A lot of men will go to substances or… alcohol or things along those lines. Me, I eat. I mean, I’m a stress eater. So I’ve had to learn to, you know, curb that because otherwise I’ll just sit and eat and I’m one of those where, you know, just give me anything. I’ll eat anything random, doesn’t matter, doesn’t make any difference. And at the end of the day, though, you don’t feel any better when it’s all said and done because you’ve done things to your body that frankly are harmful to it, meaning you now feel worse than when you started out doing it in the first place.
SPEAKER 05 :
Right, and then we beat ourselves up for, oh, fuck, I should have known better. You know, I teach this stuff, and I do that. And so we know that we should eat better and take better care of ourselves, and when we don’t, we beat ourselves up and we have more shame, and that only makes us more stressed. Where, you know, one of the things I work with the guys on is I tell them, You can still do that. You can still go out and have that cigarette that you don’t want to have or, you know, that bowl of ice cream or whatever that might be.
SPEAKER 13 :
Right, right.
SPEAKER 05 :
But some people say 15 seconds. I think even five seconds of just being with yourself, feeling the urge in your body, in your emotions, in your mind, you know, what are you telling yourself? Just stop for at least five seconds. Fifteen’s even better. Take a deep breath or a couple deep breaths. Yeah. And Then do that thing, and I’ve seen guys quit smoking just from doing that, without forcing themselves, just catching themselves not reaching for that thing that is a distraction.
SPEAKER 13 :
Well, and that goes kind of along the lines of the diet end of things. They talk about this on the diet end of things, where rather than eating something, and by the way, I would even add into what you’re just saying, when it comes to having a craving for whatever, food, cigarette, alcohol, whatever, slow down, take a deep breath, give yourself 15, 30 seconds, and then on top of that, guys, everybody listening, especially you, man, Go drink a glass of water. Most of us, Owen, are severely dehydrated. We don’t realize we are. The dehydration can affect our brains, of course. And so along with that deep breath and taking a moment to yourself, while you’re doing that, have a nice glass of water, 8, 10-ounce glass of water at the same time, and you might find yourself having a different craving when you’re done.
SPEAKER 1 :
100%.
SPEAKER 05 :
And you probably know that caffeine or coffee or beer – you know, doesn’t hydrate us nearly as well.
SPEAKER 13 :
Not at all. That’s exactly right. No, not at all. And, again, we’re talking, because, Owen, everything you’re talking about, really, it’s emotionally based. And the healthier we keep ourselves, the better our emotions are because there is a direct correlation between how healthy we are, what our brain health is like. Again, I’ve interviewed enough folks over the years to know that brain health is a big deal. We tend to forget that, Owen. We do all sorts of things. You know, frankly, because so much of our bodies run on automation, I guess you could say. Oh, and breathing, for example, your heartbeat and so on. I mean, those things just happen automatically. Our brain is making that happen. But we tend to forget that there’s a lot of other things our brain does that the healthier we keep it, the better off we are. And yet most of us don’t function that way.
SPEAKER 05 :
We don’t, and we don’t realize that the brain uses a tremendous amount of energy, and it’s gonna keep running as if it’s some computer that all you gotta do is just plug it into the wall and it takes care of itself. And so often what happens is as we get stressed, because it’s a survival response, We crave carbohydrates. We crave sugar. And as you’re saying, John, that’s like the last thing we should be eating.
SPEAKER 13 :
That’s right. That’s exactly right. So, again, guys, all of you listening, men especially, stressful time of the year. And by the way, it’s stressful for men and women alike. I don’t want to make it sound like, you know, it’s just men. Although, you know, you’re the men’s emotional leadership development author of Grow Up, A Man’s Guide to Emotional Maturity. So we are speaking to a lot of men, a lot of you guys that are out there. And I will just tell you straight up, I mean, I have raised – A boatload of kids over the years, Owen, have been self-employed since I was 22 years of age. Trust me, I understand stress. I understand the things that you’re talking about and where you’re trying to get these guys on the right track. So believe me, guys, everybody listening, I understand the things that a lot of folks go through, a lot of men go through, Owen. And there are times where as a man, you just think, man alive, am I capable of doing this? And how am I going to do this? And yet at the end of the day, Owen, we figure it out. We do.
SPEAKER 05 :
We do, and the thing I would end with, we don’t have to do it alone.
SPEAKER 13 :
Absolutely.
SPEAKER 05 :
That’s what we tend to do with guys.
SPEAKER 13 :
Yeah, we kind of get this attitude of, oh, I can do it on my own. I don’t need any help and this, that, and the other. And the reality is you can, but it’s a lot more stressful and in a lot of cases makes it a lot worse. We’re just having, whether it’s a spouse, whether it’s a good friend, whether it’s some of you guys are like my age and you’ve got adult kids like I have, Owen, and sometimes it could be any of those that you can sit and have a conversation with that at the end of the day takes that stress off.
SPEAKER 05 :
It does. I mean, I got into all this 30 years ago, starting free men’s groups really all over the country. And so the guys could have an emotionally safe place just to do that because a lot of guys don’t have that.
SPEAKER 13 :
No, they do not. So, guys, I would encourage you, please, if you’re feeling the stress of the holidays, of everything that’s going on, you kind of wonder, hey, how am I going to make all of this happen? You know, number one, reach out to somebody, myself included. You know, we have our text line and email. You’re always welcome to reach out, and I will do the best I can to help you guys that are listening. Oh, and the last thing I want is somebody going down a path of destruction that at the end of the day not only harms themselves but their family as well.
SPEAKER 05 :
Yeah, and I appreciate that, and offering that connection to men who really need it is a valuable and courageous service.
SPEAKER 13 :
Well, thank you, and Owen, I appreciate it. How do folks find you, sir?
SPEAKER 05 :
Through our website, and that’s meld, M-E-L-D, dot community. It’s community spelled out.
SPEAKER 13 :

This isn’t rage radio. This is real, relatable radio. Back to Rush to Reason.
SPEAKER 13 :
All right, we are back. Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560. Dr. Julie Gatz is joining us now. Dr. Julie, welcome. How are you? Merry Christmas.
SPEAKER 09 :
Merry Christmas. I’m well. Thank you.
SPEAKER 13 :
Thank you for joining us today. I appreciate it greatly. Jingle Belly. That is the season that is upon us. I know we talk a lot about this, but it really is that time of the year where, gosh, you’re going to shove so much stuff in your mouth, you’re going to wonder, why did I just do that?
SPEAKER 09 :
It’s true. I mean, a couple of advice points I have is if you’re going to a party that’s not a sit-down dinner party, Eat three meals before you go. Have your breakfast, have your lunch, have your dinner. Don’t go so hungry that the first thing you’re going to do is run for the best-looking sweet and carb and all the stuff that comes on trade. Otherwise, you’re just filling up on something that’s just probably not going to be very good. And then within a few hours, you’re going to be full, bloated, uncomfortable, wish you didn’t do that, and it’s not worth the payout. So if you want to taste them, taste them, but don’t go and fill up on it.
SPEAKER 13 :
And I think that’s true, folks that are listening, Dr. Julie, whether you’re talking about going to a party or you’ve got a lot of goodies at the office or, in other words, it’s not just a party. This stuff can happen any time.
SPEAKER 09 :
It’s true. I mean, you know, the worst thing that you can do if you’re trying to be good to your digestive tract is don’t skip breakfast. Eat protein, not a cup of coffee and a croissant and call yourself done. I’m talking if you eat protein in the morning, you do not crave sweets so badly at night. And I ask almost everyone. It’s 85% of the people that have snack problems at night are skipping breakfast.
SPEAKER 13 :
Okay, so note to all of you listening, if that’s you and you are one of those individuals that struggles at night, there you go. Now, going back to the whole party thing, because I know you and I have talked about this many times in the past, and a lot of folks will be doing the party rotation, I guess you could say. In fact, some of that’s already started for some, I think, Dr. Julie, maybe some of these have already taken place, but there’ll be a lot more. You’ve got, you know, from now through… Super Bowl, which I know we’ll probably talk about even before then, but you’ve got Christmas coming up next week, New Year’s the week after, ball games that’ll happen that whole weekend long where people invite folks over and so on. New Year’s Eve, of course, is mixed into that. And then the Super Bowl is, you know, but about another four to five weeks away. So the reality is it’s just this continuation of stuff, parties, events, things you have to go to where, you know, it’s American way to have food there.
SPEAKER 09 :
I know. And, you know, this really is a stressful time to our systems. You know, as a general rule, we don’t make enough digestive enzymes to break down when we’re eating well the food and get the nutrition from it. And, you know, secondary or first to even taste is we’re eating for nutrition. So if you have any gas, bloating, indigestion, heartburn, constipation, diarrhea, acid reflux, that is only a sign that the body is saying, hey, something’s not right. you’re not getting nutrition, and this is the very beginning of any disease that you can name, digestion is generally the first thing that goes wrong.
SPEAKER 13 :
Okay, so in all of these things, which we try to keep, at least we talk about this on Wednesdays on a routine basis, trying to keep things as healthy as possible. The healthier you are, the better you feel, the better your brain function is. I mean, all these different things that go hand in hand. And Dr. Julian, I know you’re big on this. A lot of this starts from your gut, the stomach, if you would, and not only what we’re putting into it, but maybe what we’re not putting into it.
SPEAKER 09 :
That’s true. So, you know, we already have a kind of a decent idea of what the heck we shouldn’t be eating. I mean, I would say in general, if you’re eating a lot of carbohydrates, you’re doing yourself a disservice. They’re weird in this country. They’ve been used roundup all over them. They’re not the same as when we grew up in the 70s. And so it’s not helping you. And because of our poor food quality, our ways of growing, our not remineralizing our soils, We are not getting the nutrients we need generally just from eating. And so what’s happening is we’re not making enough enzymes to break down our food. So it’s a bit of a catch-22. We don’t get the nutrition. Then we can’t even break down the things that we should be breaking down. And so my secret weapon for years and years has been to give high-quality digestive enzymes to my patients. because it gives them the ability to get nutrition from the food that we’re eating.
SPEAKER 13 :
Okay. And I take that same vitamin, I guess you could call it, Dr. Julie, the Absorbate, for those of you that are listening. Some of you take it as well because I hear from you that you do. Those of you that do not, I’ll just tell you straight up, and I’ll add for them. I don’t get paid for this, by the way. I don’t even get any free product. I just buy the stuff because I believe in it enough, and it works. And, Dr. Julie, I’ll take anywhere from – I mean, at least one every single night, and depending upon, you know, what I’ve done or shouldn’t have done during the day might take more than that, but I always take one every single night. For me, it helps me sleep. I think it does help my digestive system at night. It’s just sort of a quote-unquote reset, I think, for me, Dr. Julie, as much as anything. And at the end of the day, yeah, I am a firm believer in them.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah, it’s amazing. I mean, even to the point of, you know, my daughter last night said, oh, my gosh, I have such a sort of acid stomach. And I gave her two Absorbate, and within an hour, she was like, wow, those really do work. I’m like, yeah, really?
SPEAKER 13 :
I want to stop you for just one second because I think I get this from people from time to time, and I’m not a doctor. I interview a lot of them on the radio, folks, but I am not a doctor. But occasionally I’ll get notes or text messages along these lines as to, okay, can I take these on a full stomach? Can I take them on the empty stomach? How many do I need to take? Can I take too many? Answer all those questions, Dr. Julie.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yes, so you can take them on a full stomach, which will aid you in breaking down the meal you just ate. If it’s a bigger meal, take more than two. You can have it on an empty stomach because the enzymes and the quality of the enzymes will break down inflammation in the body. So if you have achy joints, you’re inflamed somewhere, you don’t feel good, you’re moving slowly, you take it at night on an empty stomach. It also helps to break down bacteria, toxins, viruses, as well as the inflammation. And can you take too many? Of course, if you take too much of anything. But they are a vegan formula.
SPEAKER 13 :
I think you’d end up with more of an upset stomach than anything if you took too many, Dr. Julie. That would be my thought process.
SPEAKER 09 :
I mean, since it’s all from plants and vegetables. and fruits and things like this, so fine, you know, anything’s going to give you a problem. People give it to their dogs, they give it to their elderly, they give it to the kids. It simply is an aid in something that we need so desperately because if we really can get a handle on our digestion and have none of those symptoms I just mentioned, then you’re actually living a healthier life. But it’s just not taught, it’s not on TV, it’s on your radio. But this is an ignorant area, and I don’t mean dumb. No, no, you’re right. It’s one that people aren’t being taught because there’s way too much money selling the other stuff. That’s exactly right.
SPEAKER 13 :
That’s exactly right. I’ve never asked you this, and I apologize. I should have asked you this probably years ago. Who came up with Absorbate in the first place? I mean, I’ve known about it as long as you and I have been doing interviews, which is several years now. But how long has the product been around, and where did it originate from?
SPEAKER 09 :
So that’s a good question. I grew up in the Chicago area, and because of the type of doctor I am, I’ve treated a lot of chronic problems. So I’ve been able to go through a lot of supplement companies, and what we really found out after a lot of testing was there’s a handful of supplement companies that do it really well. And these guys are a suburb of Chicago. They had found out about what I do, and they asked if I would be a spokesperson, and I didn’t trust their product. So I used it for a while and I was like, wow. So I do muscle testing. So I was testing for this. And when we got to talking, we all knew the similar manufacturers of good quality vitamins. There are a couple of older men. They’re so genuine. And, you know, they give free samples on the website. They give free samples on the radio. They get 24-7. But they’re just genuine. They actually mean it. They don’t do crazy marketing. And, you know, they’re just old school. And I’m just I’m so proud of them because they make such a great product that out of all the enzymes I’ve used, I’ve used a lot. This is the go-to constantly.
SPEAKER 13 :
And again, folks, it does work. And I know I sound like an infomercial at times on it, but I can’t. And the reason why I sound that way for everybody listening is it’s like a lot of other products that I use that I still talk about in a lot of the other programs that I have. If I find something that I like and I believe in, you’ll hear me talk about it a lot because Dr. Julie, it works. Really quick, I’ll give everybody an example. So I do another show on the weekends where I do an around the house show on Saturday mornings, 9 to 10, and then I do a drive radio, which I talk people call in about their car car problems things like that and for years dr julie and i found this a long long time ago because in colorado we have you know wet weather snow things like that i found this product that goes underneath the car it’s called a garage mat you drive on top of it and all of the junk that would normally collect on the car and the snowstorm drops on the mat instead of running all over the garage and i can’t tell you dr julie over all of the years of talking about those, how many of those I have sold for some of these companies just because of the same thing. It’s a product I believe in. They don’t pay me to talk about it, but it’s a product that I use that works, and Absorbate is the same way.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah, that’s cool. Well, Chicago area, I’m in Florida right now, but I can see the visual on that. Oh, they work great.
SPEAKER 13 :
They work great. But again, my point is when I find a product that I like and believe in, nobody has to pay me to talk about it because it speaks for itself.
SPEAKER 09 :
I mean, I’m the same. You know, I sometimes feel a little like the Walmart of, you know, products, but the fact is I do use the things that work. Nothing else is on the shelves in my clinic unless it actually has tested and tried and true. And same thing goes for at my house. You know, I, I use the absorbate. It’s sitting right in front of me on a, in a bowl because it will keep me to remember that every time I eat, I need to take some. Great point.
SPEAKER 13 :
All right. Talk to us. Number one, where you can actually, I’ve got a things to ask you, but where do folks get absorbate? What’s the easiest way to do that?
SPEAKER 09 :
They can go to the website, which is naturesources.com. Check out the website. Check out the Absorb Aid. Read what we have to say about it. And you can get some free samples or 20% off your first order. And I always say it’s great to be smart and educated, but nothing’s going to change unless you do something. And these guys give you a chance to actually, with one click of a button, get free samples and check it out for yourself.
SPEAKER 13 :
Great point.
SPEAKER 09 :
You can also call the 1-800 number, which is 1-800- 827-7656. Use the code radio and the same principle applies.
SPEAKER 13 :
Okay, perfect. And I appreciate that greatly. Okay, one thing in my notes, and this is something that I think most of us, I’ve done this. I doubt if too many people haven’t done this. And if you haven’t done it, congratulations. You’re my hero. But that is eating so much that you expand your stomach. How do we stop from doing that?
SPEAKER 09 :
Oh, you know what? You have to, first of all, start with eating food with nutrition, because if you start piling in the carbs and the, you know, sugary things and the pizzas and the pastas and the pop tarts and the cheese and the crackers, you aren’t getting enough nutrients, but you’re bloating and you’re always hungry. You’re actually starving and malnourished, which is why you need more and more and more and more. So you have to somehow just cut the craziness and Start eating eggs in the morning, fish and chicken at lunch. I don’t care if you have steak, that’s fine with me. And then every meal you can, I want you to have some steamed green vegetables. When you start putting in good nutrients, the body calms down. The inflammation and the bloating on the internal aspect of your intestine calms down and you start to get nutrients and you stop the craziness. But you have to do this for three to four to five days of only good food.
SPEAKER 13 :
Okay. What about the hydration end of things? And I had a last guest on a moment ago where I was even talking to him about that from my viewpoint, but I know how hydration works, and yet most people still are dehydrated.
SPEAKER 09 :
It’s true. So, I mean, the fact is if you wake up in the morning, have two glasses of water before you have any coffee or anything else, your body has been hydrated. Sleeping all night, it needs to be hydrated. You wake up cells. You wake up the body. You might even find you don’t need the coffee or the tea or whatever you’re drinking in the morning because you’re now starting to hydrate the body. If you can get in eight to ten glasses of water, one glasses of water, that would be great. It’s simply, if you look at how much water we have in our body, we have to replenish it. Otherwise, we start to really… cause problems. By the time you’re thirsty, you are already dehydrated. And as far as the parties go this month and next month, if you’re going to be drinking, what I have found personally, I like to drink myself, but what I try to do is pick the alcohol that I do the best with. And when I have one, then switch to a water. But I don’t just drink a plain water. I try to get a water. I’ll put some cherry juice in it, maybe a lemon and a lime and fill it with ice. And if I’m at a party, it’s just the aspect of having it in my hand. It’s not that I need more alcohol. It’s the social aspect of holding something while you’re chatting. So switch from the alcohol to a water, from the alcohol to a water, and you’ll find that you drink less, you feel better, you’re hydrating. And it’s just a little trick, and then nobody’s asking, oh, why aren’t you drinking? And you’re pulling a lemon in the water.
SPEAKER 13 :
Great point. Great point. Yeah, most people don’t know the difference, especially some that have had one too many. They definitely aren’t going to know the difference, and you’ll be the one that doesn’t have too many that can actually navigate through everything in a very intelligent way because others can’t. So great idea. And I also know this, that aid in drinking water, especially, hey, you’re heading in. You know you’re going to have a big meal. If you’re fully hydrated, you automatically, because I know, Dr. Julie, because this is me, the more hydrated I am, the less I eat.
SPEAKER 09 :
It is so true, and people forget about it. You know, a lot of times people will, you know, look in the refrigerator, and they’re hungry for something, but really what they are is they’re thirsty. So go get the water. Then you don’t need to fill yourself up with something, even like grapes or apples. You don’t need that. You just needed water.
SPEAKER 13 :
Right, right. All right. I also know, personally speaking, that there are just certain foods that – and I’ll get personal with everybody, and I love the stuff. I could eat it probably every meal, but I can’t eat it because it’s just so hard on me, and I don’t know why. I’ve never really done any kind of studying to know why, but – Alfredo sauce and me, Dr. Julie, do not get along at all. It is not a good combination for me. I mean, I can have maybe one bite and I’m okay. But if I do anything more than that, I am out. It is not something that I can eat. And I know all of us probably have similar things along those lines. So what I’ve learned to do is don’t eat it.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah, it’s true. And, you know, I’ve done a lot of testing for food sensitivities in my career and The most common that I do see is wheat and dairy, and your Alfredo sauce is the best combination of wheat, dairy, the butter, the high-fat content, and it’s pretty much your body’s going, yeah, no thanks.
SPEAKER 13 :
Yeah, literally. In my case, it’s literally trying to reject it the minute I eat it. I don’t have any other way to say it. It’s just like, I can’t do this. Get rid of this.
SPEAKER 09 :
Yeah, it’s amazing.
SPEAKER 13 :
It really is. And so here’s my point. All of you know what those things are. And in a lot of cases, they are things that you love because the taste is delicious and you just want to have it. And I guess, Dr. Julie, my advice to that for folks is just say no, don’t do it.
SPEAKER 09 :
I know. And the other thing is you do crave the thing like that because it’s a bit like, let’s just go all the way and say it’s like cocaine. Once you get a stimulant and you get your metabolism stimulated that way with those foods, it does give you a burst of energy, but it’s at the expense of all your other systems. So if there is something that you do a lot of that’s just a lot of, it’s probably something that your body’s going, yeah, so clean up the diet. Then eat it and tell me how you feel because you’ll notice it more once you clean up your diet. Get it out of your body for about a week or two. Then eat it and you’ll see what it’s been doing.
SPEAKER 13 :
All right, a four-course meal. We’ll close with this where, you know, folks have like a soup, a salad, an entree, and then, of course, the dessert. And I’m a weird person and everybody listening knows this. I love salad, but I’m a guy that if it’s all in front of me at one time, if a restaurant does salad first, of course, I eat the salad. I don’t leave it to the side and so on. But if there’s the ability for me to have – you know, a plate of salad and the proteins and whatever else. I’m that weird guy that’ll eat all of that stuff in the salad last. I don’t know why, Dr. Julie, it’s just me. I’d rather have the meat and the protein and the salad secondarily. But how are we supposed to do that?
SPEAKER 09 :
Well, it does go back and forth between salad and protein, but I always think that you should eat the protein first. It’s the most complicated of the foods. It’s the thing that the cells need the most. It’s Really just the very basics of health. So get the protein in first. Then you can have your salad. Any of the vegetables, order them. Order a side of vegetables if you’re out to dinner. And if you have to have the carbohydrates, later have a piece of bread. Later have the macaroni and cheese. Later have the baked potato. Because those are just the carbs. You don’t want to start with those. They’re empty calories. It’s not something that’s so highly nutritious that your body’s going, yay, we’re so glad you did that. And then if you’re going to do dessert, I don’t know, you try to pick a fruit dessert, skip it, take it home. Don’t layer it right on top of a heavy meal. If you possibly can. And if you’re at a party, go put a napkin over it, put it in a plastic bag, take it home tomorrow and, you know, give yourself a break.
SPEAKER 13 :
Great point.
SPEAKER 09 :
You just don’t have to consume it 10 minutes after you ate your meal.
SPEAKER 13 :
Great point. Great point. Florida Wellness Institute, talk about that and how folks can get a hold of you.
SPEAKER 09 :

Cub Creek Heating and Air Conditioning, where, hey, if you’ve had any issues at all with your furnace, not because of power outages, by the way, but just issues with your furnace, give Cub Creek a call today. Find out what they can do for you. And don’t forget, with the changes coming at the first of the year, if you’re in need of a furnace, do it now versus later. Talk to Hunter today. Find him at klzradio.com.
SPEAKER 02 :
New regulations are about to make heating your home a lot more expensive. But Cub Creek Heating and AC can help you get ahead of the changes. Colorado’s new ultra-low NOx rules change the way furnaces and water heaters burn fuel. And once the current inventory is gone, the price to heat, repair, or replace a furnace could jump dramatically. Some estimates say by as much as 60%. These so-called high efficiency units are also more finicky. They require precise installation, they’re more likely to break down if anything is installed incorrectly, and they could add $60 to $100 a month to your heating bill. So if your furnace is getting older, now might be the smartest and most affordable time to replace it and save thousands later. Rheem Certified Pro Partners at Cub Creek don’t upsell. They’re HVAC experts, they’re not salesmen. Let them take a look and give you an honest assessment of whether it makes sense to replace your system proactively. It’s worth a quick call. Reach out to Cub Creek Heating and AC today by visiting the advertisers page on klzradio.com.
SPEAKER 16 :
Suck it up, buttercup. Back to Rush to Reason.
SPEAKER 13 :
All right, we are back. Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560. Okay, kind of recapping the last two guests that we had. The first one, of course, was talking about mental health among men especially. And it’s something that, you know, guys, for you listening especially, and I have a lot of male listeners because of, you know, who I am, by the way, and a lot of you are car guys and so on. And reality is, yes, this time of the year things can hit all of us in different ways that we maybe aren’t even expecting. And just the load of life. sometimes can just show up. And sometimes it shows up when you least expect it. It could be right during the middle of the holiday itself. You could be at somebody else’s house. You could be at your own house. You could be in a quiet moment. You could be who knows what. There could be something that you notice on the television or somebody says something and all of a sudden it triggers something that you think, oh, wow, am I really doing everything that I should? Or am I enough? Am I taking care of things the way that I should be with my own family? And am I able to take care of all of the financial problems stresses that are there and so on and I know it can affect a lot of you ladies as well but that particular guest was really talking about men men’s emotional leadership development is where he’s from meld it’s meld.community is the website and again for all of you guys that are listening you can’t do it alone you do need help that’s where it’s great to have other you know friends and or sometimes it can be your own kids it can be your spouse it could be you name it you know we all need somebody that can help us through those tough times that come along And they come along in different seasons of our lives. And for some of you that are old, you know what I mean. Some that are young maybe haven’t experienced that yet. But trust me, as a man, you will go through those times in life where you’re wondering, am I enough? Am I doing enough to make things really work across the board when it’s all said and done? And guys, I don’t envy you guys at all in that. Being a dad, being a father, being a husband, you know, all of that, it can be very taxing at times. So if you need anything ever, reach out and I’m always here to help. And then, of course, Dr. Julie, all of what we just talked about a moment ago as we go through this season of, in most cases, overeating. All of us are guilty of that at times. And at the end of the day, it’s like anything else. Does it really help you and benefit you? And do you feel well when you’re done? The reality is, no, you feel like crap. So here’s the bottom line. Just don’t. Eat the things that you know that you like. Dr. Julie always talks about how, you know, if you like a lot of things, then eat a little bit of a lot of things, but not a lot of a lot of things, and you’ll get through the season a lot better, and you’ll come out on the other end, and you won’t have gained weight, and you won’t feel bad, and you’ll be proud of yourself. And it kind of goes back to the whole mental wellness thing as well, and that’s true for all of us, no matter whether we’re male, female, mom, you know, moms, dads, siblings, doesn’t make any difference. That’s it for this hour of health and wellness. Wednesday, two more hours coming your way. Don’t go anywhere. Rush to Reason, Denver’s Afternoon Rush, KLZ 560.
SPEAKER 1 :
by the rich guy.
